Personal favourite from Kippy’s work is “The Happy End of Franz Kafka’s ‘Amerika’” (1994). A roomful of crazy looking chairs and desks arranged on a sports ground acid green floor. Many of the chairs were the artist’s invention; all versions of the same set up: a job interviewer and an interviewed. “It seems they’re trying to teach us a basic tonal vocabulary,” says a shirtsleeved technician in a key scene of Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), as a volley of sound and light blasts from an alien mothership. The epochal encounter of extraterrestrial and human is here imagined as a spacey stop-start rock-concert rehearsal, as if we’ve snuck in early to see Pink Floyd or Tangerine Dream warming up their Moogs. Each era gets its own imagined version of this meeting, based on its particular tech clichés and visions of the sublime. Forty years later, in Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (2016), the visitors’ script is a series of tasteful squid-ink motifs on a smoky glass ground—as if the aliens were pitching a new Sigur Rós album cover. Some care had gone into designing these languages, but they could only ever be fantasies about communication, metaphors for metaphor. On the other hand, Daniel Oberhaus’s “Extraterrestrial Languages” is a mostly sober study of real—scientific, mathematical, artistic, and philosophical—efforts to enact this linguistic rendezvous. He starts with religion, the original program to commune with extraterrestrial beings. Brian Dillon (@briangdillon) reviews. But who cares. No big deal. I want MOOOORE Series Forward "In today's era of instant information gratification, we have ready access to opinions, rationalizations, and superficial descriptions. Much harder to come by is the foundational knowledge that informs a principled understanding of the world. Essential Knowledge books fill that need. Synthesizing specialized subject matter for nonspecialists and engaging critical topics through fundamentals, each of these compact volumes offers readers a point of access to complex ideas" I love my ever growing collection of the MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series and I can't wait to indulge the topics in every volume I own. So far the ones I've delved into are Memes, Extremism, Post Truth, AI Ethics and Algorithms and the accessible language makes the learning of the topics so engaging! #mitpress #essentialknowledgeseries #booklover #bookcollector #library #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookstagram #booknerd

"Internet memes may be entertaining, but in this book Limor Shiftman males a compelling argument for taking them seriously" And he definitely does. I love how he describes memes as cultural units reflective of societal climate by meme creation via mimicry, remixing and simple forwarding. From the first meme Kilroy was Here to the "broadened perception of political participation" this meta deep dive goes into the evolution of memes and how they shape and forge mindsets and behaviors of meme consumers and producers depending on the meme's subject material. This is such a great book on digital culture and for people who see the influential power in memes #mitpress #essentialknowledgeseries #memes #book #bookrecommendations #booklover #bookstagram #booknerd #bookstagram #bookcollector #bookphotography #booklove #bookreview

“To amass an archive is a leap of faith, not in preservation but in the belief that there will be someone to use it, that the accumulation of these histories will continue to live, that they will have listeners.” – Jayce Salloum, p. 186. My recent dive into the art theory swimming pool. THE ARCHIVE is a compilation of chapters by artists, critics, and historians about how “archives,” both personal and institutional, are used in art practice. I liked the book overall, but I found some chapters difficult to comprehend. The writing was more “academic” than what I usually read. 😵‍💫 The most interesting chapters are the ones from the artists themselves. 😎 Merewether, Charles, ed. THE ARCHIVE.

The audience interacting with the piece gets a glimpse into this digital self-diary and is at the same time invited to participate in a ritual of deletion of this archive of one person’s intimate data. Once a searched term is deleted on screen, the white square containing it eventually turns black, and the term gets printed out on roll paper along with the date of search and deletion. The roll paper amassed serves as an indication of the materiality of our data and the infrastructures hosting them. The roll paper gets cut and the pieces of personal data are framed and shown as part of the installation. A piece of the digital self framed. Deletion Process_Only you can see my history is an interactive art installation based on my five-year personal search history in the Google search engine. While the personal search history maintains a sense of privacy, according to the company’s own declaration, its public sharing during the creative process triggers deeper discussions on the construction of a digital self. These traces online may resurrect one's presence in a non-linear fashion, akin to a digital self-diary. The audience interacting with the piece get a glimpse into this digital self-diary. After all, your personal search history on Google doesn’t necessarily belong to you. Rather, it is part of a larger data profile that is used by advertisers to target you. Deletion Process offers a window into that archive of one person’s intimate data – and invites the audience to experience the agency to erase it. https://amzn.to/4al7LJ3 (Kindle) https://amzn.to/4as5qeI (Paperback) A powerful examination of the unsettling history of photography and its fraught relationship to global antiblackness. Since photography’s invention, black life has been presented as fraught, short, agonizingly filled with violence, and indifferent to intervention: living death—mortevivum—in a series of still frames that refuse a complex humanity. In Mortevivum, Kimberly Juanita Brown shows us how the visual logic of documentary photography and the cultural legacy of empire have come together to produce the understanding that blackness and suffering—and death—are inextricable. Brown traces this idea from the earliest images of the enslaved to the latest newspaper photographs of black bodies, from the United States and South Africa to Haiti and Rwanda, documenting the enduring, pernicious connection between photography and a global history of antiblackness. Photography’s history, inextricably linked to colonialism and white supremacy, is a catalog of othering, surveillance, and the violence of objectification. In the genocide in Rwanda, for instance, photographs after the fact tell viewers that blackness comes with a corresponding violence that no human intervention can abate. In Haiti, the first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, photographic “evidence” of its sovereign failure suggests that the formerly enslaved cannot overthrow their masters and survive to tell the tale. And in South Africa and the United States, a loop of racial violence reminds black subjects of their lower-class status mandated via the state. Illustrating the global nature of antiblackness that pervades photographic archives of the present and the past, Mortevivum reveals how we live in a repetition of imagery signaling who lives and who dies on a gelatin silver print—on a page in a book, on the cover of newspaper, and in the memory of millions. MOVING THROUGH GRAVITY & DESIRE: SUBVERTING THE PRACTICE OF WALKING In a new book from the Whitechapel Gallery and MIT Press, the topic of walking in contemporary art is considered through a variety of texts edited by Tom Jeffreys. Jordan Whitewood-Neal attended the launch event & read the book, with the subjects discussed leading to thoughts on the politics & implications of walking, moving & rolling through territories. ¡Novedad!

In a world that prioritizes activity and circulation, idleness has become untenable, even criminal. The significance of “idleness” has over time oscillated between a neutral state of “not doing work” to the negatively charged notion of “laziness.” Evoking waste, Victorian moral values and Lockean concepts of property come to mind. Yet if positioned as leisure, the privilege of being idle can take on many architectural forms from the pavilion to the shopping mall. Interpreted as rest, it can situate resistance against the subordination of the laboring–and often racialized–body. Declaring a stasis, it reminds us of the deeper material history one may find in geological time. If idleness is simultaneously intolerable and desirable, what can this tension mean in art and architectural practices? Thresholds 53: Idle invites scholarly writing, artistic interventions, and criticism from the realms of architecture, art, and related fields to delve into the complexities of idleness. We aim to unravel how art and architecture have historically engaged, harnessed, or resisted the concept of idleness across different geographies and in different historical periods. #thresholds #idle #journal #mitpress #mitarchitecture #mit #thresholdsjournal #architecture #art #arthistory

3/27/2024, 1:08:32 PM

What can be inferred from the uses and representations of idleness? The Ming-Dynasty artist Wen Zhengming (1470–1569) celebrated idleness during his time away from politics in Garden of the Inept Administrator (1535) while the English painter William Hogarth (1697–1764) famously criticized the immorality of idleness in his engraving, Industry and Idleness (1747). The workers at General Motors’ Flint factory deployed idleness as an organizing tactic during their 1937 sit-down strike, while the British welfare state warned against “idleness” in the 1942 Beveridge Report. Today, the concept of idleness is being redefined by changes in remote-working technology, work patterns, and societal norms; sometimes, being idle means strolling in a Bloomingdale’s mall. In what ways have cities reflected society’s attitudes towards idleness and recreation, and how have these spaces—playgrounds, gymnasiums, shopping malls and parks—evolved over time? From the early modern state reinforcing its power through the management of nature to Cuba’s encouragement of the “organopónicos” or urban agriculture on idle land, in what ways has idleness been addressed as an ideological issue? #thresholds #idle #journal #mitpress #mitarchitecture #mit #thresholdsjournal #architecture #art #arthistory

3/27/2024, 1:07:43 PM

From challenging idleness’ implied passivity to exploring its resiliency and emancipatory potential, Thresholds 53: Idle seeks to uncover the visible and invisible ways in which idleness shapes our disciplines. We encourage contributors to critically examine idleness as both a discourse and a tactic, acknowledging its potential for societal critique while exploring how embracing moments of stillness and inertia can foster connections across scales of being, praxis, and types of representation. #thresholds #idle #journal #mitpress #mitarchitecture #mit #thresholdsjournal #architecture #art #arthistory

Good morning everyone, Our friend extraordinary artist and writer Catherine Lord joins beloved artist-theorist, historian, and Rail contributing writer Jill H. Casid (@jillhcasid) today Wednesday (3/20) for a conversation on the occasion of Lord’s book, The Effect of Tropical Light on White Men (@noplacepress, 2023). Catherine will discuss her investigation of memory, both personal and national, that broadens the dialogue on colonialism, complicity, and cultural property. In March 2001, she returned to the Commonwealth of Dominica, one of the more insignificant of the fifty-nine colonies of the British Empire, and the place where she was born. On the last day of her stay, Catherine was loaned three leather-bound ledgers of Dr. Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls, a botanist, physician, and plantation owner on the island from the 1870s until his death in 1926. In The Effect of Tropical Light on White Men, a title appropriated from an obscure eugenics tract, Lord takes Nicholls’s headings as the framework for a bellicose, mordant, and often wry critique of power relations between colonizer and colonized, public and private, image and word. You can register for this conversation through our Events page linked in our bio. And you can get your copy of The Effect of Tropical Light on White Men through our Bookshop or at your local independent bookstore. 🙌🩵⚡️🌈🪷🧘‍♀️🏄‍♀️🌈✨🧘‍♀️🏓📡👌 📚 #CatherineLord #noplacepress #MITpress #artbook #TheEffectofTropicalLightonWhiteMen #Dominica @terraamericanart @yhaduong @ge.schwartz.9 @ljvalenza @amandamilletsorsa @bettinaprentice @moniquetruongwriter @ethanrymanstudio @cordyrymanstudio @kuannyc @annakunzchicago @gluibizziak @cornelia.butler @markdionstudio @ge.schwartz.9 @antonio.claudio.carvalho @glasserienyc @monirafoundation @stephaniebuhmann123 @belowgrandnyc

During Women’s History Month, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge some remarkable women who have played a significant role in shaping the design industry and inspiring us in our careers. One of those women is Muriel Cooper, a visionary designer, researcher, and educator whose groundbreaking work has influenced countless people in the fields of graphic design, digital communication, and education. Cooper was the first design director at MIT Press and also the co-founder of the Visible Language Workshop at MIT and the MIT Media Lab. Throughout her career, Cooper dedicated herself to exploring the intersection of technology and communication and her influence continues to this day. From the iconic MIT Press colophon she designed to the generations of designers she inspired through her teaching and mentorship, Muriel Cooper is a true design pioneer. #MurielCooper #DesignPioneer #MITPress #VisibleLanguageWorkshop #MITMediaLab #MurielCooper #DesignPioneer #MITPress #VisibleLanguageWorkshop #MITMediaLab Photo credit: Medium, AIGA Eye On Design, MIT News

Just got this massive 840 page book about the notorious Department of Media Arts Study at SUNY Buffalo. This was published in tandem with “Mindframes: Media Study at Buffalo 1973-1990” exhibition (2006-07) in Germany. I grew up in Buffalo oblivious to all of this as I was young at the time. I have one friend that took one of Tony Conrad’s classes in the late 80’s and one of my old band mates from my LA period, who was also from Buffalo, did a thing with Paul Sharits in the late 80’s where he played a minimal guitar riff for like 8 hours while a bunch of projections ran. I think this was at Hallwalls gallery. Anyway, I’ve been obsessed with flicker films since those days and have gotten back into studying this scene. You can view a bunch of things on YouTube now but I can imagine the full effect of experiencing this art form in full screen or at installations. Digging into my roots here. #departmentofmediastudies #buffalony #sunybuffalo #tonyconrad #paulsharits #peterweibel #geraldogrady #videoart #flickerfilm #experimentalvideo #art #mediaarts #digitalart #photography #book #literature #artbooks #mitpress
