Chateau Lynch-Moussas one of the 61 Grand Cru Classe 1855 is a historic estate purchased by Lynch family and formerly located on 3 large plateaux; Madras, Moussas and Bages. In the 19th century the Estate was divided into two, Lynch-Bages and Lynch-Moussas. The Casteja family acquired Chateau Lynch-Moussas in the early 20th Century. Emile Casteja inherited the estate as well as its management in the 1970s and immediately set about enhancing its development. His son, Philippe Casteja took over in 2001 (the vintage yr of the bottle we tried) and the year 2001 was also celebrated with the first creation of their second wine, Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas. We started the day at a female owned winery where a husband and wife team (he's the winemaker) make some VERY UNIQUE and delicious wines. Ali and her husband created Smith Story wines together, and they've created some truly amazing wines together. Our second stop was Flowers Vinyard and Winery, where we were treated to an outstanding charcuterie tray of bites that complimented the wines perfectly. (Who would have thought a mushroom cookie could taste so good?) Arriving in style on the @wine_tractor we enjoyed walking through the charming veggie & fruit gardens at @longridgewineestate Options include a restaurant, kids play area & a tasting room with inside seating or outside seating amidst their abundant gardens. The Mann family from the 17th century and the Barthelme family since 1654. The Domaine invested in 1997 a lot to change their approach to the biodynamic philosophy to create harmony within the vineyard and around. That creates sustainability for the vine, presence of Mycorrhizae, is a fungus that assists the roots to get better nutritional elements of the soils. The Alsacian Grand Cru to the second wine has their own fine unique expression since! The 25 hectares of land is divided into hundreds of plots and each of them is meticulously treated like a small garden. Had a bunch of wine lovers over to help me drink through some bottles that needed to be drunk before I begin my second half-century. Sadly the 1974-era bottles weren’t particularly great, yes, not even the Petrus. The ‘06 @louisroederer_ Cristal, which was my prize at the Roederer Wine Writing Awards, made up for that in spades. Some interesting wines in here, with the Fiorano still kicking and the Stony Hill too faded. The first honor of the family was in 1718, when the King Philip V of Spain gave the noble title of Marques de casa Concha upon José de Santiago Concha y Salvatierra for his merits as Governor of Chili. In 1976 Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro many generations later founded a winery on the property and rapidly became Chili's most Iconic line of premium quality of wines, and got the second honoring now from wine experts. Marcelo Papa the winemaker now for more than 21 years also known for the seeker of noble roots, expanded the family business and is producing many different wines with high quality. Bass Phillip Premium and Estate 2004 Checking in in the 04 BP vintage over the last couple of months, a turning point for Phil in the early 2000’s, a vintage that has aged very gracefully, also the days before procork. Premium as expected was more concentrated and complex, typical BP fruits, cherries and cranberries, blood orange and Asian spices. Also a touch vegetal and herbaceous with plenty of length and texture. It’s go time on this vintage. The Estate was amazingly fresh, maybe a little cleaner than the premium, didn’t have the concentration but brighter fruit, rhubarb, raspberry confectionery, smokey oak, earth and mushrooms. Lovely acidity, holding its balance, peak drinking.
