When it comes to found footage films there is always a knack to standing out, as there are a great many out there, and in this Welsh-shot chiller, we have past and present meet in very interesting ways. In this superbly made folk horror from director Matthew Butler-Hart (The Isle). Which was backed by one Ian McKellen, and shot entirely on iPhones. The film is at its best when delivering these shadowy glimpses and “did you see that?” moments but even in its more full-on moments of supernatural attack, it retains an edge of authenticity, no doubt via its believable dialogue (some of which was improvised) and characters, with an impressive cast who help bring the story to life (so to speak). The commendable handheld filming techniques and great uses of budget also help bring that real feel to the proceedings. Taking the defiantly durable found footage sub-genre to the extremities of contemporary influencer culture, while conjuring the most old school of evils in the process. The Vanishing or Keepers, is a 2018 British psychological thriller drama film directed by Kristoffer Nyholm and written by Celyn Jones and Joe Bone and it based on the 1900 disappearance of the Flannan Isles Lighthouse crew. 🎬 Plot: Three lighthouse keepers on the remote Flannan Isles find a hidden trunk of gold, leading to their mysterious disappearance. 🍿 I don't really know why this movie has 5,9 rating on IMDB. It seems that a lot of people don't recognize a good atmospheric and mysterious movie. Well, it definitely deserves more recognition and that's why I'm here for you. The vibes of the movie sort of reminds me “The Lighthouse” of Robert Eggers, but this one does not belong in fantasy genre, something that intrigued me more about it! 📺 The film creates a tensed and mysterious atmosphere through its great cinematography with wide shots of either the sea or the island. You can almost immediately get the sense of how menacing the weather can be for the lighthouse staff and how hard is this job. Not only, for the bad weather conditions they are dealing with, but also for the loneliness and the isolation they experience in this remote island. ⛈️ However this feeling break, when something unexpected happened that tears apart the three lighthouse keepers. 🤐 The less you know about the movie, the better it gets. I can only say that is thrilling and violent. Gerald Butler is so good and I think he is definitely made for those kinds of roles! Peter Mullan and Connor Swindells were also great and I found myself care for them or totally hate them! I did like the dynamic of the three main characters and how they are developed throughout the story and the hardships they're going through.🎥 Overall, I think it's a great and suspenseful watch and I would like you to suggest me more movies like that guys! I think that sometimes IMDB ratings are inaccurate and this movie frankly proves that! I'll go with a 8/10 and I highly recommend it! 🔥 What do you think about the film? VERY much of a slow burn, I can see why some are frustrated. This is a #gothichorror story set in the past, surrounding a well known mythical beast, but rarely used. 3 men are rowing thru fog, their ship having crashed against the rocks, when they come upon the titular island. While they want to go save other men, they are found by a male resident & he talks them into helping themselves 1st, especially as Oliver #AlexHassell is hurt. He takes them to Douglas’ #ConleithHill house, to be tended to by his wife Lanthe #ToriButlerHart. However, they are warned against wandering around at night. Lanthe is not the only woman on #TheIsle. Korrigan #AlixWiltonRegan is also there. Despite the kindness shown them, all 3 have a sense of unease, especially when they talk about getting off the isle & no 1 seems keen on helping them do that. They split up to find a way to do it on their own, but only 2 make it back, as the 3rd is mysteriously killed, lying on the rocks w/ his chest ripped open. Something is definitely off, making Oliver even more suspicious is seeing Lanthe seem to act unnaturally thru a keyhole. Meanwhile, we get flashbacks to an earlier time, when there were more residents & 2 men start fighting over Lorna #EmmaKing. Drunk at a dance, the 1 that she’s not keen on decides to have his way w/ her. Her yells for help cause him to try muffle her, but he goes too far & ends up choking her, making it look like she slipped on rocks on the way home.
