- Overhead position for Handstands -⁣ ⁣ When working towards the Straight HS we need to look at what our shoulders, and upper/mid-back are doing. We need to know what our overhead position is like. ⁣ ⁣ We want our shoulders to be open. Lifting our arms up overhead is called “shoulder flexion”. ⁣ ⁣ But that is not enough to get a straight HS line. ⁣ ⁣ We also need our upper/mid-back (thoracic spine) to bend backwards/close without flaring our ribs at the front of the ribcage This we call “thoracic extension”. ⁣ ⁣ Overhead position for Handstands = Shoulder flexion + Thoracic extension.⁣ ⁣ To be clear, by “Thoracic extension” I mean that the front and back of our ribcage will move in different directions. ⁣The back side of our ribcage (the spine) will move backwards.⁣ The front side (breastbone/sternum) will stay somewhat the same (neutral) at this happens. This might be done with the intention of pulling the ribs down at the front.⁣ ⁣ Does that make sense?⁣ ⁣ In the slide above, I am showing 3 different positions for my arms and ribcage. They all demonstrate my maximum shoulder flexion, in other words: how far up and back I can move my arms until the shoulder joint says STOP. ⁣ ⁣ The reason why these positions look different is because I have placed my ribcage in different positions: ⁣ ⁣ Fanny 1. Ribcage is tilted backwards.⁣ Fanny 2. Ribcage is tilted forwards.⁣ Fanny 3. Ribcage is closed at the back "in extension" while the front is kept somewhat in neutral. This is where we want to be. This is what thoracic extension looks like. ⁣ ⁣ Do you know what your overhead position looks like?⁣ ⁣ You can check what your thoracic extension ability is like by moving between the above 3 positions in a video taken from the side. ⁣ ⁣ If you cannot move your arms overhead so they cover the ears or preferably; are behind them without flaring the ribs, then you know additional mobility drills will be useful for you. ⁣ ⁣ This could be in the warm-up or more integrated into a program depending on what you need. ⁣ ⁣ If you’re unsure of where to begin 👉 simply shoot me a PM and we can chat further. ⁣ ⁣ What you don’t know, you don’t know, so make sure you know. ⁣ F.

- Shoulder aligment for Handstand - ⁣ ⁣ When a student starts training with me for Handstands we work on positioning the body in as straight line as possible. We work on finding it and we work on holding it for longer durations. ⁣ ⁣ The straighter line will be greatly beneficial to learn because it creates a strong foundational position for holding balance for longer, doing different shapes etc. ⁣ ⁣ @nattyrobertson has moved through the three postures we can see happening in some HS drills such as the HS feet on box, in the photos. Although, I want to make it clear that Nat is pretty darn flexible so the third posture is not as common as the first (based on what I personally see in people coming to me for coaching).. ⁣ ⁣ It is closer to the middle posture that we would like to be. Now to get there we need:⁣ 1. Adequate body awareness to find it and knowing when we are there and when we are not. ⁣ 2. Flexibility to get into this shoulder opening & thoracic extension position ⁣ 3. Strength to maintain this position over longer durations ⁣ ⁣ A good way to figure this out if you train without a coach is to film yourself and experiment moving through what you think is the three distinct positions. -- HS alignment ||--⁣ ⁣ It can take quite some time to change the way you get into your Handstand and hold it. ⁣ ⁣ You may have all the components you need: Mobility, Strength, Skill, Knowledge etc. yet it may take longer than you think for the body to fully adopt it. Or perhaps- understand it.⁣ ⁣ At times, I still feel myself slip into a kick up version that I am not going to be able to find balance in. It often happens when I feel tired or impatient/frustrated not *getting* a particular drill. ⁣ ⁣ I enjoy watching my student @kiplodocus as she is moving through many things that I recognise having struggled with in my own Handstand journey. The Kick up and finding the alignment to balance has been one such thing. ⁣ ⁣ But check out how different her precision in finding her freestanding HS can look now compared to when she started! ⁣ ⁣ 👉 Video 1 is end of phase 2 vs. Video 2 is before phase 1 of Handstand coaching. I say "can" because as the rest of us humans, all Kay's HS don't look like that, yet!... ⁣ ⁣ A couple of things we are focusing on in the 3rd phase which she has just started, is to increase consistency sticking the different shape kick ups (straight, tuck, straddle) and to get even more efficient in holding the HS, less of the "wet noodle"-syndrome!⁣ ⁣ If you swipe to the last image you can see the difference in HS alignment that Kay got into at the top of the kick up before she started phase 1 and at the end of phase 2. ⁣ ⁣ Can you see how much of her body is on the underbalance side, hence why she couldn't stick those kick ups?⁣ ⁣ They are a little hard to compare due to camera angle, but as you can see in the videos (which is where I snapped the screenshots from) there's a clear difference. ⁣ ⁣ Are you having trouble sticking the balance in the freestanding HS kick up? ⁣ Let me know in the comments. ⁣ ⁣ F.

Positioning and stretches to improve your handstand! Here’s a few things you can work to get better handstands: 1. Hollow hold for core strength 2. Wrist stretches to increase flexibility and mobility 3. Lat stretch to increase shoulder flexion 4. Floor positioning to work handstand shape on the ground. Da piccola mi ci arrampicavo nel vero senso nella parola. - - Un piede da un lato, un piede dall'altro.. e via di scalata! - L'unica nota negativa che ho preso alle scuole elementari è stata causata per essermi arrampicata alle due pareti del bagno per passare al bagno di fianco (ovviamente vuoto).. - Mentre nella casa delle vacanze mi appendevo al telaio superiore rimanendo aggrappata solo con le falangette. CREATE BODY AWARENESS WHILE INVERTED TO AVOID FALLING⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Walking on your hands or holding a handstand requires body awareness.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬⁣⁣⁣ While holding a handstand in neutral position is ideal, the reality is we fall into an arch or hollow position and have to fight back to neutral to avoid falling. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⁣⁣⁣ With a slight hip extension (arch) to gain momentum forward, there needs to be tension in the arch position in order to avoid falling out of handstand. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Both of these drills can be used for both warm up and practice reps. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 1️⃣: 𝘒𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘶𝘱 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭⁣⁣⁣ ⚡️ Start close to wall in extended position. Squeeze glutes, press into ground to bring heels off to find a neutral position. ⁣⁣⁣ ⚡️ Pause when you reach neutral position and then return to the wall⁣⁣⁣ ⚡️ Bring hands further away from wall and repeat⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 2️⃣: 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬 (𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳)⁣ ⚡️ Kick up to handstand with partner holding your feet/shins ⚡️ Have partner lower you to the ground while maintaining a neutral (slight hollow) handstand position⁣⁣⁣ ⚡️ Keep lowering to the ground until your core/upper body breaks ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Try these out!
