Gut healthy kale salad This recipe is perfect for boosting bile and digestive enzyme production. Alleviates symptoms of reflux and constipation and improves motility. Serves 2 Ingredients - 3 handfuls kale, washed and stripped from stalks - 1 tbsp lemon juice - pinch of pink Himalayan salt or sea salt - ½ carrot, peeled and julienned - ¼ raw beetroot, peeled and sliced (or julienned) - 1 tbsp olive oil - 3 tsp pine nuts Method - Heat a small frying pan. - Add the pine nuts in a single layer. - Toast for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning. - Leave to cool. - In a medium bowl add kale, lemon juice and salt. - Using your hands, massage the lemon juice and salt into the kale for a few minutes to soften the kale. - Transfer to a salad bowl and stir in all the remaining ingredients except the pine nuts. - Top with the pine nuts and serve. A day I’m grateful for is one when I went to my doctor to ask for more help with my chronic pain because nothing she had suggested got rid of it. She said she didn’t really have any other suggestions. It was in this moment that I could have accepted that as my truth for the rest of my life. A 20 something with arthritis flare ups daily. Or I could start looking somewhere new, somewhere I’d never looked before and knew nothing about. I’m forever grateful for that girl, the curious one who wants to know why, and how. I went down the rabbit hole of natural healing and.. I’m still there. There’s just so much to discover about these bodies we occupy. I can’t help myself, I’m forever in awe. The part that gets me the most? That food, and yoga were the core changes I made that got rid of my chronic pain. Like gone, rarely ever comes back again, and never to that intensity that it was before. It’s funny because if “eat more plants and do more yoga” was suggested to me in the past, I’d overlook it and think that couldn’t possibly be the answer to my pain. But it was in the repetition, learning, and commitment to myself that showed me the path. The answer to our problems may be simpler than we think, but the action is what stops people. My top 5 steps to start improving your gut health 1. Understand the importance of your gut and what it’s doing for you 2. Reduce & Eliminate the garbage that you’re consuming (this goes beyond just food and drink) 3. Improve nutrition - go for a carnivore / animal based way of eating (most nutrient dense foods) 4. Add movement daily (exercise) 5. One of my favorite things about the weight loss program is helping clients change their perspective on diet and exercise, and that has certainly been the case with Ron, the king of exercise! He came into the program looking for a food program to complement his workouts. He was in the gym often, but not quite getting the weight loss results that he wanted. Like many of our clients, Ron struggled with the thought of putting the gym on hold for a bit and just focusing on his diet and healing his body. We initially agreed on light walking and stretching until we introduced and tested the first fat into his diet so that his body would have sufficient fuel to support the workout properly. By day 21 Ron was chomping at the bit to get back to his workout routine. Having lost almost 15 pounds, he was ready to get moving. We agreed to incorporate his kickboxing classes into the program, but after a couple of classes his weight loss slowed down, and he agreed to put the workouts on hold to focus on food. Regular exercise is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, but it can be difficult to lose weight while working out. This is because various factors can complicate the weight loss process, so we simplify things by focusing solely on nutrition. Ron found that once he stopped worrying about his workouts and concentrated on his diet, he began losing weight steadily again! During Ron’s 90-day program, he lost 40 pounds, dropped from size 38 pants to 32, and lost seven inches of his stomach! He’s also experiencing deeper sleep. Ron’s entire perspective on exercise has changed—he now has zero interest in tough workouts and is more interested in fueling his body properly and treating exercise as complementary to his diet. It was the gluten, after all. We tried sour dough. We tried homemade and all organic. European flours… Turns out it was Celiac and none of those efforts was stopping the damage. For one of us. Whenever I got stressed I’d crave something sweet, & it’s these cravings that would derail my efforts to eat healthy. I’m pretty sure eating when stressed is something many people do, whether they realise it or not. Sometimes when I felt worried, upset, or stressed, I would turn to food to help me feel better. Which led to frustration, disappointment, shame, regret & embarrassment. Do you want to know how I overcame stress eating? I want to share 3 things… First of all, I noticed that when I ate foods that were high in sugar or fat, I felt really good & happy, but only for a little while. Turns out these foods released chemicals in my brain that made me feel happy. Secondly I also noticed that eating distracted me by taking my mind off what was causing me to be stressed and gave me something else to focus on….what I was eating. Lastly, I noticed that eating when I was stressed became a habit. Whenever I was stressed, I ate. Eating my feelings was becoming a problem & holding me back from my goals around weight loss & eating for better gut health. Which frustrated the hell out of me! Can you relate? Getting ready for my 3 days away in chilly Canberra. I feel the cold easily and to the point where I can't think straight and am very uncomfortable in freezing situations. I don’t know any mum that doesn’t complain of not getting enough sleep. I know myself I’ve done it many times. I knew that because I didn’t get enough sleep I was tired, cranky, irritable, short & frankly not a ball of fun to be around (at least that’s what I was told by my nearest & dearest). Practicing self-compassion has made a significant difference in my journey. I started acknowledging my efforts and celebrating small wins, which boosted my motivation and resilience. I Surrounded Myself with Support I found strength in surrounding myself with people who uplift and support me. Whether it’s your partner, family, friends or mentors, having a strong support system can be invaluable. Their encouragement and guidance have helped me stay on course, especially during challenging times. I Chose To Take Action Taking small, consistent steps towards my goals has helped me overcome my fears and doubts. Each action built my confidence and reinforced the belief that I could achieve my goals. I Learnt to Stay Present I used to spend a lot of time worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. Practicing mindfulness has helped me stay focused on the present moment and approach challenges with a clear mind. In my journey of self-discovery and growth, I’ve learned that the greatest barriers are often the ones we create ourselves. By identifying and challenging these obstacles, we can unlock our potential and move closer to our dreams. Have you ever stopped to think about what might be holding you back from reaching your goals or living the life you truly desire? For the longest time, I never considered the possibility that I might be the one standing in my own way. But through personal reflection and growth, I realized that the biggest obstacles in my life were often of my own creation. Here’s how I confronted and overcame these challenges. 1. I Identified my Limiting Beliefs I took some time to reflect on my thoughts and beliefs about myself. I wrote down the negative beliefs that were weighing me down: “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t do this,” “What if I fail?” Seeing them on paper made it clear how these thoughts were holding me back. I challenged these beliefs by replacing them with positive affirmations like “I am capable” and “I am resilient.” 2. I Set Clear Goals Setting specific and achievable goals helped me focus my efforts and stay on track. Instead of vague ambitions, I broke my larger goals down into smaller, manageable tasks and created a plan of action. This not only helped me stay organized but also gave me a sense of accomplishment as I checked off each task. 3. I Embraced Failure as Learning I used to fear failure and avoid taking risks, which limited my growth. Now, I view failure as a valuable opportunity to learn and improve. Each setback taught me something new and pushed me closer to my goals. Something we’ve all said at one time or another other… I don’t feel like working out! Especially on the days where I’m exhausted from work, household duties, the kids & just life in general. But what keeps me going are the changes I’ve noticed since I started being consistent in my goal to move my body everyday. Here are some of then…. 1. I noticed my confidence start to grow. 2. I started to feel good in my body. 3. My clothes started to fit more comfortably. 4. I noticed I had more energy. 5. I noticed I was happier more of the time. 6. I noticed I was more fun to be around. 7. I wanted to eat healthier foods. 8. I wanted to drink more water. 9. I was setting a good example for my kids. 10. I was doing something for me. 11. I was more motivated to move my body the next day. 12. I slept better. 13. I was setting a good example for my kids. 14. I was one step closer to my health goals. 15. I felt less foggy in thought. 16. I got to learn something new when I tuned into my favourite podcasts. 17. I became stronger, leaner & fitter. If you don’t feel like working out today, I hear you! Do you need to drink more water? Until I started learning about why I needed to drink more water, I had no idea how important it was for my overall health, from my energy levels, to my skin & gut function, adequate water is essential. We all vary in how much water we need, especially when it comes to our activity levels & the climate in which we live. I’ve found aiming for at least 8 glasses of water a day easiest to remember & repeat consistently. And I definitely notice the days I haven’t drunk enough, as I find myself over thirsty & trying to catch up, only to find my sleep constantly disrupted by frequent visits to the toilet. I don’t quite have a timer to remind me to drink water, but I do have a drink bottle I love that I carry everywhere. It’s what makes the difference for me. How about you? I was a perfectionist! When it can to food, if I didn’t do it perfectly, it wasn’t worth doing! If I missed a workout, I’d ruin my streak. If I ate something I didn’t intend to or more than I had planned, I used to think I’d ruined everything & what was the point? I may as well finish off the bag & start fresh tomorrow! I gre tired of the constant merry-go-round & decided I wanted & needed to change. So I started with working on my perfectionism by taking tiny steps of imperfect action. Learning to embrace healthy eating & exercise as healthy enough! Because being perfect made it almost impossible to be consistent. I decided that doing something, even if not perfect, was better than doing nothing at all! What did I do that was ‘enough’? ⬇️ I started walking my dogs everyday rather than having a gym membership I hated & struggled to be consistent with. I started going to bed early half an hour earlier even if I wasn’t tired. I started adding more fruits & veggies onto every plate. Eating a sandwich over a salad because it was more filling. I started learning not to beat myself up when I ate dessert or ate more than I planned It was all about learning to be healthy over perfect! And it’s still something I’m working on, but at least I’ve stopped & gotten off that merry-go-round of perfectionism. How about you? 😳Ugh no you are not alone! So many people struggle with one or more of these and I was definitely one of them! In the last year maybe more I just was in such a fog and felt so bad after eating certain things. I kinda could pin point the culprit but wasn’t totally sure. My healing place is on or near the water 🌊. I go there whenever I feel stressed or need to relax and disconnected. I've reflected lately on why the water does it for me and I have so many memories spending summers at the lake as a child. So now that its open season, I make it a priority every week (almost daily) to go there. 💕🏄‍♀️I've fallen in love with paddle boarding as it's a way to get out on the water, move my body and just be present. It's like the water helps wash away the worries of the day and I get more centered with my thoughts and connected to myself. I could spend all day here. Sitting, swimming, tanning, paddling, dreaming, releasing. And I did. Barely any pics were taken today as the time just drifted away and I've lost enough phones in the water 🤣 What about you? I Love these! I spent most of my life not being able to eat raw apples because of oral allergies. Related to birch tree allergies are pitted fruit and apples and carrots. The year got me through. I can now enjoy apples and most things without any sort of symptom. Which was (& still is) hard for me, because I’m not naturally a big water drinker. Never have been. It’s always been the one habit that always takes that extra effort. So, to drink more water I started by swapping out caffeinated beverages like coffee & Diet Coke, & I started drinking more herbal tea. For extra encouragement I brought myself a cup to use at home that I loved, & for work a drink bottle that was easy to carry, drink from & kept my water cold all day long. Basically anything that would help make drinking more water easy. And you know, I didn’t realise how much my mood, energy levels & hunger were affected until I started drinking more water. When you think about it, especially when you’re hungry or in my case hangry, what if you were actually more thirsty than hungry? What helps me, is that if I wasn’t sure whether I was hungry or thirsty, I’d drink a glass of water, adding fruit, fresh or frozen, like citrus or berries to flavour the water & see how I felt. You might like to do the same? You might after a tall glass of water be surprised you aren’t hungry any more? It definitely makes me feel full, helps prevent me eating too much & makes sure I stay hydrated. And you know, I also helps prevent constipation & keeps things moving. 🌿 Morning Routine for healthy hormones and metabolism 🌿🌿 I know I've posted this before but it really does make such a big difference to our overall health. Having a consistent morning routine is important because what we do in the first 1-2 hours after waking influences our hormones and our metabolism. 🌿 Waking up early and at the same time is important to support the natural circadian rhythm which is key to a healthy metabolic rate and balanced hormones. Makes a even bigger impact if you get out in that early morning sunshine. 🌿 Starting the day with 10 minutes of sunshine in the first hour of waking Supports the pancreas in releasing insulin. This is needed for blood sugar control. Morning sun also helps with sleep quality, mood and reduces inflammation. 🌿 Plaque and bacteria build up in the mouth overnight so it's important to brush your teeth and scrape your tongue before eating and drinking so that bacteria isn't reabsorbed back into the body. 🌿 Eat a high protein breakfast within an hour of waking to improve blood sugar levels.
