Happy Independent Bookstore Day 📚🩷 I had such a blast hopping around to Central Iowa Indies today! Thanks to my friend @melmaxstroud getting me up early, after that I was so excited to check out new places! I also bumped into @read_with_jill_and_simba who is the real MVP & is stopping at every store on the list! I’m proud of making it to 4 spots though and I got some amazing books along the way 😍😍 1. @readinginpublicbooks ❤️ this is my favorite & super close to me in Valley Junction! We started our day with a delicious latte from their cafe and I grabbed 3 books, not really pacing myself at first 😅 ✨Everyone is Watching by @heathergudenkauf (Iowa author) ✨ The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston ✨Bride by Ali Hazelwood 2. Good morning friends! I’m up and moving, time for cleaning and drinking lots of coffee. I wrote about 500 words already this morning, and now I’m picking up my apartment. Going to read later, my goal is to finish The Memory of Souls by the end of the month, and I have less than 200 pages left. So easy as pie. 🌲 I finally got the Silmarillion the other day at the bookstore! I’ve not read it, but I need to. I really need to do a reread of LOTR and the Hobbit in general. I may do it this spring, as sort of a fun anti winter adventure. Whatcha think? Is there a time you prefer to read specific books? 🌲 If you haven’t already, you need to check out Sawdust and Embers. They have the most wonderful smelling Muir Woods items, it’s flowery but woodsy at the same time, and not overpowering. 🩻🚗📸 BOOK REVIEW 📸🚗🩻 Thank you so much @kensingtonbooks for having sent me a ARC Copy for Review of Long Time Gone by @charliedonlea This book was absolutely amazing and it is one I could not put down! The story was so freakin good and I just want to say that this book would make an excellent movie! 🎥 ⭐️ Charlie Donlea sure knows how to write a good story. One thing I definitely loved about this book was the short chapters. I feel a book moves a lot more quicker when they are short and doesnt feel like it drags on and that its never going to end. The use of the past and the present in the timelines was great going back and forth between the Sheriff’s point of view in his past in 1995 as well as Sloan in the present 2024. Helps bring the whole story together and made for an excellent read. Also this book pretty much has you guessing the whole time on who did what and how it all played out which I really liked. I loved the thrill, the mystery, and I definitely was shocked by the end and what really happened. Overall Excellent book, I cant wait for everyone to read this one!!! I promise you it won’t disappoint!! I had fun visualizing this mystery by putting myself at the Gravesdown Estate and around Castle Knoll. It was as if I was on the ground trying to discover the truth along with Annie. Kristen Perrin does an excellent job of leading the reader exactly where she wants them to be. My mind was racing the entire time to figure out who the murderer was because I love to be right when it comes to guessing the clues correctly to get to the truth before the end of the book. The connections between the characters and the twists were worth staying awake until 1 AM to finish the story. Readers will love Annie, how her mind works, and all of the people of the village. I would recommend this book over and over. This was an incredible book and I loved every second of it. If you like Age-Gap Romances and forbidden love then this one is the one for you. I loved Halley and Reed’s characters and their connection to each other. ❤️ I was definitely curious though how Halley’s best friend was going to react in this one when knowing about Halley and Reed’s relationship. I knew from the start that this was going to be an emotional ride. 😭 You pretty much know what to expect on the outcome when you find out your best friend is wanting a relationship with her father. How is this going to play out with each one of these characters? Will it work, will it not work? How would you feel if you found out this happened with your best friend? Murder Road was good but not my favorite. 🤷🏼♀️The story was good but kinda slow throughout most of the book. I was really hoping for something super exciting to happen that would leave my jaw dropping but nope, not this one. It was fun to read about the lost girl and all of what happened in the past with people going missing but overall the story was just okay. Morning friends! It’s Friday!!!!! Look. I haven’t had a free Friday by choice without having to take off work in a long time and I AM HERE FOR IT. Yesterday was a good work day, I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it all again, and learning all the things I need to. It’s been very fun so far! 🧜🏼♀️ Have you guys read these books? Sarah Addison Allen is one of my comfort read authors. She’s got magical realism down to a science, writes about food in a gorgeous way and addresses grief and love in a way that resonates. Other Birds was a found family story about a quirky set of people living in an apartment building that really met me where I was at. It was so fun to read with @j.hunter.50 and I know @mollymnreads enjoyed it too! Bookish friends are the best. TORIE | Mini Reviews *Drum roll please* Another round of “Torie’s review backlog,” this time attempting to channel @itsccreads’s dreamy bookish aesthetic! LITTLE EYES (4.5 Stars): It’s a speculative series of interconnected stories in a future where people buy cutesy little robots for their homes, except here’s the catch: other people control the robots, seeing things through the creations’ “little eyes.” Some people treat them like pets. Others abuse them. Reading like a Black Mirror episode, it raises fascinating questions about technology, privacy, privilege, and empathy. It was disjointed at times, often creepy, and disturbing—particularly at the end—but I loved it. Thank you @riverheadbooks for the gifted book. Sorry it took me FAR too long to read it! WANDERING STARS ( 3.5 Stars): Gah. I wanted to love this book, but I disliked the non-chronological storytelling and the heavy reliance on inner monologues. I found this one to be stunning at the sentence level, but strained, slow, and surprisingly disjointed at the chapter level. My frustrations increased as the story progressed, and the ending felt quite rushed. I recommend refreshing yourself on There, There before diving into this one. Although Orange valuably explores addiction in Native communities and identity for people occupying liminal spaces, it was a meh read for me. Thank you @aaknopf and @netgalley for the eARC. PENANCE (4.25) Whew. Okay. It was disorienting to read a book that mimicked true crime while also metafictionally evaluating its alarming qualities. The blend of rea/fictional crimes was particularly powerful in exposing the voyeuristic nature of true crime. The closing interview is especially brilliant—a perfect conclusion. It’s also a very uncomfortable read. Not only does it tackle a laundry list of violences (message me re: CWs), but it humanizes the villains, which invites all sorts of challenges for how we try to neatly categorize crimes (the monster, the madman, the victim, etc.) and turn to their stories—and their suffering—for entertainment. Had a lot of conflicting feelings while reading this. I can see why it's highly anticipated. It was funny at times, but by the time I finished, I realized I really didn't care about the characters or the story. I didn't DNF because I kept thinking it had to get better, but I was underwhelmed. It's funny when a book doesn't quite hit right with me, I know many people in my life who are going to love this one. Which actually makes me happy for them. Tamlin from ACOTAR Series: Tamlin is perhaps a bigger embodiment of Kenergy than Ken himself. 😂 Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982: This one, in all seriousness, is a story about a woman trying to find her place and continue to be taken seriously in her personal and professional life after getting married and having children. TORIE | Iowa City Book Club Another #IowaCityBookClub meeting in the books 😏 Not only did we get to enjoy the ambiance and amazing drinks at @greenhouseic, but we discussed Remarkably Bright Creatures. Nothing like an octopus’s perspective to incite lively debate! If you’re in the Iowa City area and want to join us for our next meeting, let me know and I’ll add you to the group 🥰 As for the book itself, Remarkably Bright Creatures was a solid 3.75-star read for me. I loved Tova’s storyline, but the octopus narrative felt inauthentic and quirky for quirky’s sake, if that makes sense. Plus, his “revelations” ultimately proved unnecessary (aka they would have been revealed anyways), which detracted from the overall narrative and his sense of purpose. Most of all, though, I was frustrated by Cameron’s character, who was whiny and lacked meaningful growth by the story’s end. Despite my frustrations, it still made for an entertaining read. It’s just that, as we discussed at our meeting, I was among those who craved something a bit more literary and a little less neat by the end. And also boo on Cameron 😂🐙 Have you read this one?

TORIE | Meet the Bookstagrammer: Bookstaversary edition The days are long but the years are short, amirite? After 3 years, @ataleoftwolitties remains a top source of inspiration and joy! Here’s a little about me: 👋🏻 I’m Torie! I thought I was 32 until Abigail said she was 31…I’m not. I’m also 31. Is this what happens in your 30s? I’ve been reading since I was three (my mom is very proud of this fact). My biggest achievement was garnering so many AR points from book quizzes in the 5th grade that the school created a special award for me. I was (and remain) that type of nerdy kid. I have two kids, ages 1 and 3, and seeing their love of reading—exploring books, visiting libraries—is a whole new source of joy. 🌎 I grew up in Gainesville, Florida ( #GoGators)—no, I’d never move back to the state, for both the politics and the way people are totally chill with the presence of gators in all bodies of water—before relocating to North Carolina ( #GoBlueDevils) for college. Never planned to be the girl who met her husband at 18 and got married a month and a half after graduating, but it worked out pretty well, so I can’t complain. I spent two years in Nashville working at Vanderbilt Business School before packing up and moving to Iowa City for grad school! 7 years, 2 kids, and 1 pandemic later, I crawled to the end of my English PhD, with a dissertation examining how three #MeToo memoirs written by women of color deeply engage with their audiences by pushing the boundaries of their genre. My husband, Billy, is finishing his periodontics residency in June, and then we’re saying #Byeowa and moving to the Burlington, Vermont area this summer! I’m currently doing freelance editing and keeping my kids alive. 📚 It’s no surprise that I love memoirs, but I also tend toward sad books and lit fic with creative approaches or twists and strong writing. For instance, Shark Heart was my top read of 2023, followed closely by How to Say Babylon, and Babel was my 2022 fave. ☁️ Solo Rec & Review ☁️ Powerless 🗡️ 👑 The Powerless Trilogy Book 1 Lauren Roberts Rating: ⭐️ ⭐ ⭐️ ⭐️ Kendra here! Okay, I did it! I bent to the Booktok and Bookstagram pressure and read Powerless! Following the Plague,many survived and were given gifts, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. The king created a narrative that all Ordinaries were infecting (Elites) those with magical abilities and causing them to lose their gifts. To save his kingdom, the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society. Being ordinary suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity. Following the king’s decree, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done. When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary. When I was getting this book, it was originally promoting readers who were fans of Sarah J Maas to read this trilogy. Although I agree it shares some aspects with the Throne of Broken Glass series, I definitely see ties to the Hunger Games series and the Red Queen series. I enjoyed the book and some of the favorite aspects it brought in from other fantasy series I have read–Love triangle-ish, competitive games involving special abilities, teamwork, secrets, secret societies, betrayal, forbidden love, etc. I will definitely continue the series when book two is released this year.
