There are few things in life you can trust. But you can trust that any new release by @ndpublishing is worthy of your attention. The unabridged and completed translation of Donoso’s The Obscene Bird of Night is a worthy addition to the catalog. From the intro by Alejandro Zambra: Donoso confronted the problem with depth and decorum and a feel for mythmaking. “I didn’t write this novel, the novel wrote me,” he said in 1970, with the book recently published, and it's true that, taken out of context, the statement sounds solemn and even melodramatic and sensationalist (in addition to repetitive, as other authors have used the same formula), but ultimately it seems relevant. “In this novel, I think I go off the leash completely, and what interests me is chasing down the ghosts, or not chasing ghosts, but finding out what is ghost and what is me,” he explains, and brings it home: “How can I put it.,. I wrote this novel a little to find out who I am.” Donoso tended to talk about this book as though he were a convalescent recovering from it, or else a straight-up survivor of it, though at times he also seemed simply like a man in love remembering the golden years of a difficult but spectacular courtship. From the book itself: It's so lovely, taking care of baby... bundling it up in shawls so it won't feel cold... feeding..., washing... diapering it carefully... dressing it up. And as he grows up the most important thing of all is for us not to teach him how to do anything for himself, not even talk, or walk, then he'll always need us to do every single thing. God grant he can't see or hear! We'll be his devoted mothers and we'll be the only ones who'll understand all the signs he makes, and he'll have to depend on us for everything, It's the only way to bring up a baby to be a saint, you have to bring him up so that he ll never, not even when he grows up to be a man, leave his room, and nobody will even know he exists, with us looking after him always and being his very hands and feet. First up on my indie bookstore day I went to Magus Books ❤️ this is the biggest receiver of my measly paycheck 😭 but the worthiest because of the joy I receive in return. I can’t say enough good things about this bookstore. I’ve been coming here for more than a decade and it’s a “perfect place” to me. I found two books by Horacio Castellanos Moya which I can’t wait to read. Hello lovely people! All has been quiet from our side for the past 2 months, but we thought it was time to share our news. It is with utter heartbreak that we tell you that our much beloved home, Caversham, has been sold and with that comes the end of an incredible era of The Caversham Press, our parent company. This is also the end of my childhood home and almost 40 years of our lives for my parents, my brother and myself, not to mention the special place it holds in anyone’s heart who has visited Caversham. Trying to wrap up 40 years of home, 30 years of Fine Art Printing and 10 years of Textile Printing is by no means easy, gut wrenching would be more appropriate. So please bear with us as we navigate this sea. Whilst The Press will be closing and Caversham will no longer be part of our family, we are looking at new directions for Caversham Textiles, however, this is going to take us a bit of time as we wrap everything else up. We will not be holding onto our vast stock of hand printed fabrics, that have all been lovingly and painstaking printed on our 12mt table in the studio and will need to move it all on in the next month or two. If possible we would prefer to sell this in batches to wholesale companies, however, should you wish to purchase a design you had always had your eye on get in contact with us. Unfortunately there will be no cut lengths and all fabrics will be sold by the roll. The rolls vary in length from just over a meter to 10meters. These are now very special rolls of fabric as they will never be printed by hand again. What we see is an illusion but normally our brain works the opposite way This is a zen-like statement but I think it can be taken seriously. Think of it this way, a baby looks at your hand. It doesn't know that it is a hand but does observe that it consists of colors, lines, shapes, textures, movement and positions - that iis the reality. The baby doesn't know what the meaning of all of this is. Later it will have an entirely different impression based on the idea and understanding that this is a hand. Its her survival story with an arse of a husband Story reflects the societal trends where role of mother is belittled - MAN, so engrossed in his BIG work days forgets that a woman is trying to survive her small unimportant days Sailor craves for little empathy by her husband, which she rather finds in the company of a friend, who is a more present father for his children The most stirring part of the novel was when in moments of daze Soldier carries her sick child to beach in dead of night. The scene is enough to shake you up, showcasing how post partum stress is never taken care of In 'My Work' Dazed & confused new mother Anna , further falls deeper into depression after move to a new city, ultimately finding solace in journaling. Her haphazard diary entries juxtapose well against the theme of pregnancy which itself doesn't have indexed plan Epistolary format of My Work works brilliantly in creating a unique narrative style. Translation is smooth These books felt like personal journey. Tear smudged pages would always remind me how we all have sailed in similar boats These books are ode to motherhood. While we mothers have experienced so much of this personally, I think it's time Men pick up more of these books to understand WOMEN Read it coz they will teach you empathy like nothing else
