2024 Series #20 3 Body Problem - ★★★½ (2024) 3 Body Problem, the impressively ambitious adaptation of Chinese author Cixin Liu's famous literary trilogy, is an entertaining adaptation though not without a healthy amount of notable flaws. The original premise is there and is respected, but the problems begin with the cast. And that is because with the exception of Benedict Wong, Liam Cunningham, Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao, the group of scientists around whom most of the events revolve are extremely frivolous characters that lack depth and charisma. Their conflicts appear mundane in comparison to the cosmic scale of the threat they're facing, and their plot development leaves much to be desired. The real highlight of the show lies in the conspiracy plot that drives the main storyline. These scenes are what propel the drama and are what keep the viewer intrigued and engaged with the story. It's unfortunate that the main cast can't sustain the spotlight effectively, because in one way or another that does negatively affect the overall quality of the show. However, it's clear that the show will face even greater challenges in terms of scale and budget if it ventures further into Liu's book series, especially considering the epic scope of the rest of the trilogy. The first season of 3 Body Problem concludes with the same ending as the book it was inspired by but opens a huge door that may leave many unsatisfied, especially if it doesn't get a renewal for a more than latent second season. While I have my reservations about it, I still enjoyed it and found it better than the overly long adaptation made in China. Flowers, Zach Baylin Cinematography - Robert Elswit Music - Kris Bowers Cast - Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lashana Lynch, James Norton The story of how reggae icon Bob Marley overcame adversity, and the journey behind his revolutionary music. A biographical drama musical directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green who has directed great movies like Monsters and Men, and King Richard. This one misses its mark. I didn’t come with high expectations but I really wanted to like this film. “One Love” didn’t really show the struggle and efforts that Bob Marley went through, that made him who he was, the impact he made, his thoughts when it comes to religion and politics, the film didn’t take the risks and played it safe. The story wasn’t really engaging, had its inconsistencies and not enough depth, the dialogue and the structure just fell flat and dull. It’s no surprise because the film started with Bob Marley in his fame era, it didn’t start before it all, didn’t show much of his childhood, his origin story, the family he grew up in. If it was shown, it would only be through brief quick flashbacks which still doesn’t explain much about his upbringing and that leaves plot holes. Kingsley Ben-Adir was committed as Bob Marley and it’s admirable, however, the commitment he’s giving is not fully reciprocated through the bland dialogue and storytelling that he was given. Lashana Lynch gave a strong performance as Rita Marley, our both leads are solid. I wish we could see more of how the love between Bob and Rita develops romantically, considering how they were portrayed as a ride-or-die through-thick-and-thin duo. The storytelling was rushed up to the point of his death, so it failed to keep the audience captivated. Not to mention, the runtime was an hour and 40 minutes, I mean, if you want to do a biopic, it’s best to do it 2 hours, I’ll give you examples of Freddie Mercury and his band Queen in “Bohemian Rhapsody” or of Elton John in “Rocketman”. Unlike Bob Marley, there’s a soul in his message, his music and lyrics. Unfortunately, “One Love” doesn’t have that soul. RATING: 3/10

2024 Movies #73 Bob Marley: One Love - ★★ (2024) Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green 45/100 For those who found Bohemian Rhapsody an exceptional portrait of Freddie Mercury and Queen, this film of a similar vein may be enough for them, even if they only know a few of Marley's songs and are unfamiliar with certain events in his life. But if you dig deeper, Bob Marley: One Love appears to be just a vanity project orchestrated by his estate because the film fails to capture what Bob Marley meant to both the music industry and society in general, neglecting to capture his international and domestic status as an icon. And that leads to the result that I have always criticized in this kind of biopics. You can't squeeze a life into two hours, let alone the life of such a complex figure like Bob Marley. My recommendation would be to immerse oneself in Marley's music for a deeper understanding of his legacy. The movie also shows at how much of a humble figure he was and how he wanted to help bring peace to the world with his music.
