5 WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS THAT *AREN’T* EATING! We all have stress. We juggle our jobs, home life, friendships, partners, chores, hobbies, health, kids, appointments, finances, travel plans, hardships, and celebrations. It’s a LOT. Add in being hypothyroid? I hear you saying “but we are moms or entrepreneurs or women or whatever! We don’t have time to relax. I know. I know! Same, girl, same. But I have two ways (and a bonus way!) to help you. When was the last time your actually relaxed? And no, I don’t mean scrolling social media after bedtime while you recover from the trauma of putting your toddler back in bed for the millionth time. I mean actually relaxed. Like not thinking about work, not having your to-do like scrolling through your head on repeat. Not doing anything in particular. We. Need. Time. To. Relax. I know, I know. As a mom, time to “relax” is often spent researching the local kids soccer program or which snacks don’t use dye or a million other things. What about as an entrepreneur? Yes you’re “off” work for the day, but you’re replying to instagram messages, or thinking about your next offering or some employee drama or a million other things. But we have got to start making this a priority. What’s that old saying- “make time for health now or you’ll have to make time for sickness later?” Yeah….. @trishbrewerbreathwork is an amazing breath worker and she wrote an incredible chapter, complete with a quick relaxation tool for my upcoming book, Hot Mess to Hot Mom: Transformational Tools for Thriving After Childbirth and Beyond. I had a client who had a history of poor sleep. It started when she had some traumatic events. We went through some emotional clearing to rewire her neural network. Then we talked about progressive relaxation and deep breathing. She has been sleeping much better ever since. She’s been receiving acupuncture as well. Mantra Meditation is the repetition of a sound or phrase to focus the attention of the mind and the vibrations of the energy toward a more relaxed and focused state.  The focus on one sound, word, or phrase, activates the parts of the brain and nervous system that begin the cascading effects of relaxation.  It is also beneficial when the sound, word, or phrase has spiritual or religious significance to you such that it creates an even deeper connection to the aspects of spirituality.  You can practice mantra meditation verbally making the sound, or any variation between sound and internally saying the mantra.  It is also still mantra meditation if you listen to guided mantra meditation like this short meditation with the breath using “so Hum”. It is okay if your mind wanders away from the mantra, as with all meditation, gently guide your mind back to the mantra and/or the rhythm of the breath and continue. It may also be helpful to determine the duration of your mantra meditation before you begin and then set a timer for that amount so that you can become fully absorbed in the repetition without checking the time.  Mantra suggestions: * A singular word with intention such as peace, love, strong * “I am” statements that alternate on the inhalation and exhalation. * A personal affirmation * Om, Shanti * So Hum * Bija Mantra - Sounds associated with each chakra * Gayatri Mantra or other Chant * Hail Mary or Prayer of Peace * Om Mani padme hum Want to know more about the different types of meditation? Would you like a little brain reset? 🧠🕊️ Through MRI imagining, modern science has confirmed the traditional rotation of consciousness used in many yoga progressive relaxation practices passed down through various traditions.  Within the motor cortex, the neurons pathways of the brain move in a specific pattern mapped along the precentral gyrus.  When we follow this specific direction, it is like progressively switching off the circuit breakers of the neuro-feedback in the body allowing this part of the brain to relax in a safe location. 5 days to the bearded, jolly old fat man arrives and i don't mean me . Participating in "Relaxation Techniques" for Day 20 of the mindfulness calendar is a deeply calming and rejuvenating experience. I have chosen to engage in progressive muscle relaxation, a technique involving tensing and then relaxing each muscle group. This process heightens awareness of physical tensions, alot of which we may not previously have noticed due to being in our "heads". Guide to Practicing Relaxation Techniques Find a comfortable, quiet place where you won't be disturbed as much as possible. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths to initiate a state of relaxation. Focus on the sensation of air filling your lungs and leaving your body. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense each muscle group for about 5 seconds and then relax for 30 seconds. Start from the toes and gradually move up to the legs, abdomen, arms, hands, neck, and face. Pay attention to the sensation of release in each muscle group. After completing the muscle relaxation, shift your focus back to your breath. Notice the natural rhythm of your breathing. When you feel ready, gently wiggle your fingers and toes, bringing awareness back to your body. Open your eyes slowly. Take a moment to consider how your body and mind feel compared to before the exercise. this is just one way to relax, there are many others. 3 things you can do this week to calm racing thoughts when you want to sleep 👉Focus on your breathing count 4 in, hold for 4, count 4 out - it's pretty hard to being in your anxious thoughts and do this breathing at the same time 👉 Take yourself through a progressive muscle relaxation - start at your toes and clench release, feet clench release, ankles clench release, calves clench release….you get the drill now… all the way through your body to your fingers, clench, release. 👉 Write the thoughts out and just look at them for what they are, they are thoughts, usually the things we fret about are in the future or the past and therefore uncontrollable but we think we can get some control of them by fretting about them. Is there anything practical you can do right now? Usually not, it’s the dead of night. Put it on your list for the morning then. PMR is a technique that involves tensing and then relaxing muscle groups throughout the body to reduce physical tension and promote overall relaxation. As your body relaxes, your mind follows suit, making it easier to drift into a peaceful slumber. Below are a few simple steps on how to practise PMR. 1. Start by finding a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be disturbed. You can either sit in a comfortable chair or lie down on your back, whichever you find more relaxing. 2. Begin with a few deep breaths to help center yourself and focus your attention on the present moment. 3. Begin with your toes and work your way up through your body. Tense each muscle group for about 5-10 seconds and then release, paying close attention to the sensations of relaxation as you do so. When you undergo stress, your body tenses up, heart rate increases, and body temperature decreases. When you continue to live in a stressful life, your body continues to stay in this state and even forgets how to relax. You start sleeping all curled up with your muscles tensed, your shoulders are raised when you walk, and your jaw is clenched resulting in tense muscles and headaches. You try to relax, but you can’t, because your body is so used to be in this “fight or flight” position ready to defend you from another stressor. Progressive relaxation technique teaches your body and your brain how to relax again. It will have an effect on your quality of sleep, on how you perceive stress, and on your overall physical healing. This is one of my most valuable tools that I turn to in times of stress, and teach it to my clients. Progressive relaxation is an excellent way to teach children how to relax. We ask children to relax but we don’t teach them how. Progressive relaxation helps them to understand what it feels like to relax. Lay in savasana and starting with the toes have your child tense the muscles squeezing the toes, then let them go. Squeeze the muscles of the feet and let them go, squeeze the muscles in the lower legs and let them go, continue until you have reached the face and head. Then have them squeeze the whole body and let it go. Ask them what it feels like? Ask them to notice if their body feels heavy or light? To notice their breath, notice that it’s slow and steady. Have them place a hand on their heart, what does it feel like? How fast or slow is it beating. All of these are signs of relaxation.
