I honestly can’t even begin to describe what is in that book… but the research was meticulously. Very well done, sir, @stephenspignesi. • I love adding wild covers to my Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde collection, and while looking in the horror section, Renfield: Slave of Dracula by Barbara Hambly caught my eye. I love Dracula (as evidenced by my post yesterday), and the Renfield bits specifically, are amazing. • On the top floor, in the autographed/rare section, I came across this signed limited @cemeterydancepub edition of Kealan Patrick Burke’s Jack & Jill. • Lastly, on the walls so the stairwell to the top floor, there were author signatures all over — of course we found @stephengrahamjones’s. • See anything cool here? Exactly 5 years ago - one of the most ambitious prog rock statement was announced! I think its one of the best CONCEPT albums I’ve ever released (the more I`m listening to it now, while doing the remaster, the more I feel like it is a spectacular symphonic poem with absolutely fantastic poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson). Nel silenzio e nel nascondimento Jim Hawkins prese la sua decisione. Passarono sopra la sua testa bianchissime nuvole e voci di congiura. Ombre si agitarono e sfilarono in una parata notturna gli uomini di mare assieme all’uomo da una gamba sola e dalle loro bocche si accesero i fuochi dell’ardore e della rivolta. Jim nascosto in un barile, acquattato come un piccolo animale fu pieno di compassione per l’uomo. La fiducia per il suo simile (quella calda volontà che sempre smuove l’intimo di un bravo ragazzo e che screzia di rosso il nero del cielo quando è da poco tramontato il sole) - gli fece comprendere “che la vita di tutti gli uomini onesti a bordo dipendeva unicamente” da lui!. Hispaniola! Urlava una voce dentro quel ragazzo, mentre il fruscio delle acque risuonava dalla prua e dai fianchi della nave. Solo, in quel tempo fermo, celato allo sguardo di tutti, Jim Hawkins divenne un adulto. Quante volte sono ritornato all’isola del tesoro e quante volte ancora ci ritornerò, poiché tra le cose che maggiormente amo, come le amò Borges, ci sono “gli orologi a sabbia, le mappe, la stampa del secolo XVIII, il sapore del caffè e la prosa di Stevenson”. In questa edizione di Orecchio Acerbo Editore, illustrata da Maurizio A. C. Quarello e tradotta da Angiolo Silvio Novaro, ho ritrovato il tesoro del tempo. Lungo il ponte della mia biblioteca, dove il mare infuria anche dove non c’è il mare, e dove non ci sono né gli albatri e né i gabbiani, dove le lanterne non rischiarono il buio delle notte e dai masconi non si sente provenire alcun boato, io ero e sono con il mio amico Jim. La schiuma di quella notte, la paura e la determinazione, la salsedine e l’odore del rum, fece di quel ragazzo uno dei miei migliori compagni e ci legammo come fratelli. Ancora oggi quando ritorno nella biblioteca della mia famiglia dove tutto ebbe inizio, sento una voce che mi chiama.
