À l’occasion de la sortie de Love Unwritten, j’organise un readathon qui se déroulera entre le 13 mai jusqu’au 24 juin. ~A letter to my fav characters from this book~ Dear Himani & Ika, I feel you. I know and completely understand the threshold you both have stood on. It takes courage to accept that you may have married for love, but over the years, it has fizzled out and turned into something quite incomprehensibly demonic. We try to find happiness in bits and pieces for the sake of our kids. But how long will this ruse last? Maybe we will stand up against the mental abuse like Ika did, or maybe we won't, like Himani. The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon I whole heartedly loved The Ex Talk, it’d been on my Kindle for a long time but it was the audiobook that finally made me read it. It is / has: 📻 Workplace romance - set in local radio 🎙️ A rivals to allies to lovers dynamic, with a side of fake dating and professional envy 📻 Exploration of grief and loneliness. I adore Rachel Lynn Solomon’s adult romances, The Ex Talk has solidified my stance that Solomon is a favourite author of mine and her writing and stories are crafted for my heart and soul. Reasons I felt this for The Ex Talk: •This book takes a workplace fake dating scenario and changes it up, fake exes! It made this trope feel new. Plus I was invested in the romance between Shay and Dominic. •Solomon writes about mental health with kindness and confidence. I thought the exploration of loneliness (especially in your 20s) and grief were well handled. •Side plots are robust and developed: Shay’s experience of workplace misogyny, Shay and Dominic’s friendship challenges, and Shay’s mother finding love after loss. •The writing is both full of meaning, emotion and humour. 🎧 The audiobook has excellent narration - I’d recommend. 📖 The print book I have is the Afterlight edition: embossed cover, sprayed edge and signed. Ready or Not by Cara Bastone Ready or Not was my first ARC read in ages, humorous and astute, it is / has: 🏙️ Surprise pregnancy 🚲 Best friends brother 🏙️ Friends to lovers 🚲 Set in New York •The surprise pregnancy trope is a love or hate trope within the romance genre. Some of my reads last year using it made me warm to it (I’m thinking: Out on a Limb, Heartless, Reckless). Ready or Not can be added to this list as it was a book I really enjoyed. •Eve’s pregnancy covers the entire length of the story. However, what creates some difference and tension (from other surprise pregnancy stories) is that the romantic love interest, Shep, is not the biological father. I wouldn’t call the dynamic between Eve, Shep and Ethan a love triangle; but it does create a fascinating and challenging set of relationship dynamics that I wanted to read about. •Shep is delightful; a little geeky, massively swoony - he’s the steadfast guy you’d want on your side. I loved that he was the love interest. •This book also explores further topics, including: friendship, miscarriage, infertility, and toxic relationships. •Even though I enjoyed this book and it covers many topics, I would have liked some of Eve’s story to have greater detail - particularly her work situation - some of the resolutions were just too neat. •I liked this as much as the other books by Cara Bastone I’ve read or listened to. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston I really enjoyed One Last Stop, which I accidentally started listening to at the same time as reading The Seven Year Slip (both are time slip stories). One Last Stop is / has: 🎵 F/F romance 🚇 Right person wrong time (literally) 🎵 Found family The story felt unique, I laughed, I worried for the characters and was invested in the romance between August and Jane (as well as other characters’ romantic relationships, but mainly Wes’). My two favourite things about this book were the amazing group of characters (I liked them all and loved their friendships together) and the writing, some of which was beautifully spot on in places - for example I thought the metaphors and similes were vivid perfection. “Jane likes to be kissed every kind of way: like a secret, like a fistfight, like candy, like a house fire.” The only thing I didn’t love was how everything pulled together, it felt too neatly concluded. 🎧 I think the audiobook made this a more enjoyable experience for me. The narrator did a brilliant job and brought every character to life. Favourite romance authors: Lucy Score The moment I read Things We Never Got Over, I knew Lucy Score would be a favourite author of mine. Unfortunately, for me, it failed to deliver. I struggled to connect with either of the of the main characters and the supporting characters distracted me from the main plot rather than complimenting it. There were some parts of the plot that felt really disjointed. There were too many things going on at once which were never fully explained or tied up. The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston Within the first 25 pages I knew The Seven Year Slip was going to be a new favourite and comfort read of mine. It is / has: 🍋 Time slip (time travel via an apartment with a magical twist) 🍴Right person wrong time 🍋 Second chance 🍴Grief representation 🍋 Same ‘world’ as The Dead Romantics After Reading The Dead Romantics last year, I suspected Poston was going to be a special writer to me; whose words are not just beautifully crafted but emotionally impactful. The Seven Year Slip is all the evidence I need to confirm this is true. Why I love this book… •Poston writes about grief like no other writer in my opinion. At once heartfelt, tender, honest and raw. Her words never fail to bring me a sense of solace. •The love story is heartbreakingly excellent. Using the time slip gave the romantic plot a circular structure that I loved considering as the story progressed. I adored both Clementine Iwan. The time slip allows two types of character development, Clementine’s on page (so we follow her journey in its immediacy) and Iwan’s through a time jump (where the reader re-discovers him Clementine). This kept me riveted! •Iwan 😍 •The talk and love of food and cooking - from the Michelin, to food trucks and home / family cooking. So… Was I weeping at 12.30 at night, in the dark, when reading this book? Yes. It’s a book that gave me so many emotions. Has it become one of my favourite books ever? Easily, yes. This is Impossible. This is going to be one of those reviews where , for you to experience it the way that I have, I really can't say very much at all. What I can say is: Impossible is not a typical romance. It is not fluffy. It is definitely not what I was expecting when I picked it up. Favourite romance authors: Mariana Zapata I’m unsure if I’d have ever picked up a Mariana Zapata book if not for @elepop4 recommending her books to me. Zapata has easily become a favourite with many of her books being ones I can (and do) reread again and again. Known for an achingly slow slow burn, many of Zapata’s books are ones I think about regularly. Sadly, we've all known a Nate too! Running alongside Tia's relationship narrative was her desire to further her career and I enjoyed that storyline just as much. It is so beautifully written with an acute attention to detail of 'the little moments' that are all to easy to overlook in the business of our lives. The book explores different family dynamics, love (in all its forms) grief, mental health and overcoming obstacles that we encounter and indeed the ones we set ourselves. I loved the inclusion of my favourite quote from The Great Gatsby; "I wish I'd done everything on the earth with you". Comparisons with Normal People are inevitable and it also reminded me of One Day. I preferred it over both of these books. Cowboy romance recommendations In celebration of recently reading and loving Rootbound it’s time to share some cowboy romances! These are ones I’ve read and really enjoyed: 📚 Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage Starting off the Rebel Blue Ranch Series (currently incomplete) Done and Dusted is a brother’s best friend romance that is a good quick read. 📚 Heartless and Reckless (from the Chestnut Springs series) by Elsie Silver If you’re on romance bookstagram or booktok I’m sure you’ve seen the Chestnut Springs series. My personal favourites are Heartless and Reckless, both are grumpy / sunshine romances (a trope I adore). The series is complete, so you can read all the stories following the Eaton brothers without waiting! 📚 Hands Down by Mariana Zapata As it was the Super Bowl yesterday you may want an American football crossover. Zac is a cowboy hat wearing Texan quarterback (who I love). It is also an estranged friends-to-lovers romance slow burn, and a standalone. 📚 Rootbound by Tarah Dewitt The book that inspired this post! Read it not just for the funny moments but the deep ones too. This book is a standalone and a book I’ll be rereading in the future. Rootbound by Tarah Dewitt I’m unsure why I waited so long to read a Tarah Dewitt book, because Rootbound was excellent! It is / has: 📸 F/M cowboy romance 📷 Love after divorce / heartbreak 📸 Standalone From the start with a raw prologue that broke my heart a little, I knew I was going to love Rootbound. Both tender and wonderfully funny, this book was a great romantic read. The romance between Tait and Henry had the swoony moments I crave and good romantic progression (that wasn’t quite linear). Their blossoming relationship explores friendship and healing, I was happy everytime they interacted (or thought of one another). I should also mention Henry is 😍 - a Viking looking cowboy with a big heart and strong loyalty. But there is more to Rootbound than a good romance. The book’s overall plot is robust, there are some surprises! It also delves into family estrangement, subsequent reconnection, and learning to trust after heartbreak (not just romantic heartbreak). Plus all the side characters were developed and added to the story, I cared about everyone in this story. ❔Have you read Rootbound? I felt this was a nice story of an unlucky girl who gets stuck in a piece of equipment at a spa (which should of been a really relaxing day for her and her perfect sister). This was such a sweet short story. I love the anonymousity in these books as it represents the Valentines feeling. 💝 Holly is a hospice nurse who has recently moved to care for her palliative Gran, whilst John is a maintenance man who has been struggling with a recent breakup and helping out his brother and his new fixer upper house. When John does a favour for his brother & puts a valentines card on his girlfriends car window, he doesn't realise its the wrong car and from this, note swapping via the car is made. I loved this short story! After an email is sent to the wrong person on Valentines Day, a boy and girl (from the same town) end up swapping anonymous emails every Valentines Day, making it their thing every year. As the years pass by, the emails get a little longer, and without divulging too much information (as they are young teens when first speaking) they find out snippets of the others life and create a special bond. Bride by Ali Hazelwood If you’ve been here for a while you know Ali Hazelwood is an auto-buy author for me. If she releases a book, I will read it, most likely starting it on release day. This is exactly what happened with Bride. Bride is / has: 🩸 F/M paranormal romance between a werewolf and vampyre 💍 Marriage of convenience (to form an alliance between enemy species) 🩸 Caretaking, mates, 🪢 Bride, as you would expect, has the marks of an Ali Hazelwood romance but this time set within the paranormal sub-genre. Misery (the FMC) loves to code, has funny musings and overall was really likeable. I welcomed the relationship that developed between Misery and Ana, their exchanges (Misery’s reluctance) made me laugh. This created a found family element to the story too which was nice. Easily my favourite thing about the book was Lowe - I do love a Hazelwood MMC. An Alpha that falls first, is loyal and sweet - I loved his appearances and his brief POV excerpts that started each chapter. But… I had zero investment in the friendship between Serena and Misery (I had the same issue in Check & Mate). This becomes a slight issue as some of the plot hinges on this friendship. Plus nothing really surprised me in the story. These are only a few little niggles, but meant this wasn’t a five star read for me. However, what I am left wanting is for a book all about Owen! 🖤🎶 The Bittersweet Symphony Duet 🎶🖤 I’m back with some more #romancereadathon2024 recommendations and if there’s one (two) books you simply have to promise me you will read this year, let it be Drive and Reverse by @authorkatestewart 🙏 These books are my roman empire. They live in my head rent-free. I can stilll remember how I felt during and straight after reading them and frankly I still feel it today 😂 Kate Stewart writes in a way that speaks to me and I just want everyone to experience that magic! 🎶 Drive 🖤 You know this must be good because I absolutely hate a love triangle, but Drive does it so, so well. So realistically. This is what a love triangle in real life looks like – someone is getting hurt. I adored the characters in this book and I can completely see why some people are unhappy with the choice Stella makes (not me!) but seeing her journey as a character and what she goes through, 🤌🏼 🖤 Reverse 🎶 This story is about Stella’s son and is honestly one of my favourite ever books. I don’t even know if I can tell you why (I can, it’s Easton Crowne) I just felt every single emotion along the way and couldn’t stop thinking about these characters for weeks (months?) after I put it down. It is simply an epic love story, and a forbidden romance with dual POV. Favourite romance authors: Cat Sebastian In celebrating @book.and.a.brew Romance Readathon throughout February I wanted to share four of my favourite romance authors. First up is Cat Sebastian. Since being recommended Cat Sebastian’s books last year, I’ve been (slowly) working my way through her back catalogue. She writes historical love stories that steal a piece of my heart. 📚 Sweet as Sin Readathon 📚 Hi everyone! May your coffee be strong and the start of your week good! 🫠🫠🫠😂 I definitely needed more caffeine in me this week haha! QOTD: What is your favourite romance trope? I'm gonna be a meanie and say leave out the big ones like enemies to lovers 😂 who doesn't love that one? Ahahah! I've already shared several why choose? books under different tropes: The Never King is one, The Lady of Rooksgrave Manor is another. Actually, so is Monster Pucker! If you're looking for a super bingeable story - I def recommend the Bonds that Tie series. Book 1 is called Broken Bonds and guess what... You don't just get one but TWO shadow daddies in this series 😈. Love books with CW pages that are a mile long? Whelp! Cute but Psycho is for you! This book was wild but I also really loved it 😂. One scene in particular just made me cackle with glee and this had my first basilisk MMC 😍. Want one that is super spicy but involves nothing paranormal? Tempt Her is it! 3 men and one lucky lady - Watch out, it might melt your kindle 🔥🔥😂. Wicked Beauty is one of my favourites of the Dark Olympus series! A retelling with Helen, Achilles and Patroclus? Yes please! Deadly games included 🤩. Last but not least, if you're a paranormal romance lover, Silvan is for you! This one is a lil bit slower burn than the rest of the books I've included here but it involves a witch, a wolf, a vamp and a warlock. What's not to love? As for me, the why choose that has been on my TBR the longest is absolutely Dark Fae by the twisted sisters. But I'm also really looking forward to the sequel of Cute but Psycho, Cute but Creepy! The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer This book was a brilliant surprise, not quite what I was expecting but in a really good way. The Darkness Outside Us is / has: 🪐 YA sci fi 🌌 M/M romantic plot, but it isn’t just a romance 🪐 Mystery, suspense and a little dash of horror I’m endeavouring to write a spoiler free review because this book benefits from reading it this way. But the premise is: two young astronauts find themselves forced together on a rescue mission, but things may not be all what they seem… Vague reasoning on why I loved it below ⬇️ •The Darkness Outside Us engrossed me from the opening pages to its end, I couldn’t put it down. The mystery that adds pace to the plot kept me as interested as the romance. •The romance uses classic tropes such as opposites attract, forced proximity, and rivals-to allies-to-lovers. But it is Ambrose and Kodiak’s journey that made this so special. The story being told through Ambrose’s perspective was also really effective. •It was an emotional read, I cried more than once (I’m sure are one point I was sobbing). •It’s a book that left me thinking, about the future and legacies we may have (on both a singular individual level, but as humanity as a whole). If you read this, message me your thoughts! I had this book on my TBR for about a year and found a hardback copy on Vinted for a bargain! I’m so glad I have it to add to my shelf. Book review 📖 Strictly Not Yours by Carrie Elks This is the 4th instalment of the Salinger Brothers series, which came out on KU on 31st Jan, and it was another good one. This series follows six brothers, all in age order, with dual POV stories between them and their love interests. This is the story of Holden and Blair. Holden has largely been an unknown character in the previous books. You don’t really know much about him other than he’s quiet and keeps himself to himself. It’s previously badged as him being a busy paediatric oncologist, but in this story you get to understand more about Holden’s character and what he’s struggling with. Blair is the perfect FMC for this story, and for Holden. She’s independent, she’s driven and she’s fiercely loyal. It’s no surprise that they hit it off. The chemistry between them is great, and in true Carrie Elks & Salingers Brothers style, the open door romance doesn’t leave you wanting. The third act break up is where this book loses some of the rating for me. It feels weak, if their connection is as strong as it’s implied, however I do think it plays well into their insecurities and you can see how it might happen. 🍸At Her Service: Book review (from @netgalley) This is publishing later this month, definitely one to add to your wishlist!🍸 I loved this book!! Honestly it was the perfect love story, it explored the romantic kind, love of friends and finding your people and finding the ability to love yourself and feel comfortable being who you are 💜 The story follows Max, who is great at her job as an assistant to one of Hollywood's talent agents but she feels stuck and isn't quite sure how to progress her career in the way she wants. As a 20 something she's very conscious of those around her settling down and she wants this so much yet is stuck daydreaming about Sadie, the adorable bar tender at her favourite local. Like a lot of people she isn't happy with how her life's going. She knows what she wants but not how to get it. That is until Max's über famous influencer flatmate offers her help in the form of a new self-actualization app. Max isn't sold but eventually gives in... I loved how relatable it was with just plodding all through life and the fact that it explored how difficult moving to a new city and making friends as an adult is. (anyone in Manchester wanna be pals?!!) The relationship between Max and the other characters was beautifully written too and I swung between hating and loving her roommate Chelsey, which I think was the point?! A fab read to get me in the mood (lol ain't I always?!) for romance season! 🧚♀️Sweet as Sin Readathon🧚 Hi all! 👋 The next prompt for the Sweet as Sin Readathon is retellings and admittedly, I've read less of these (or well, less spicy ones). My favourite out of these are probably the Peter Pan ones: The Never King is a fun, dark read that has several books out that follow the same characters. The books increase in spice but this isn't to say that the first book has none! Hooked is one of the only spicy books so far where I came for the spice and stayed for the plot. I can't wait to continue with the series! I'm using the term retelling very loose here so a story inspired by villains we love is good enough to me! A Ruin of Roses is a beauty and the beast retelling and has several parts that made me chuckle. I love the side characters in this one lol. Katee Robert's series Dark Olympus (book 1 is Neon Gods) is also super fun. My favourites are Electric Idol and Wicked Beauty. She also has the Wicked Villains series which is based on fairytale retellings instead of Greek Mythology but while I enjoyed Desperate Measures, I didn't like the others nearly as much. Between the two, I'd suggest Dark Olympus more. The King of Battle and Blood was also an interesting retelling of Tristan and Isolde but with vampires! This one has more spice than I thought it would and I thought it was fun. I didn't enjoy book 2 as much though. My tbr for this prompt is pretty big 😂. I even feel like I'm getting "morally grey blind" as I call it 😂. Red flags? WHERE??? I don't see them anymore. 😅🤦♀️😂That being said, I wanted to share my most recent faves that I went bonkers over! The Serpent and the Wings of Night needs no introduction - loved this story and both MCs are morally grey. ❣️ YES, I'm still sucked into the Zodiac Academy hole. These authors are called the twisted sisters for a reason and there's all kinds of lines getting crossed in this series but this first book looks at a time point where the MMCs are the FMCs bullies. Do check trigger warnings! Both of these first two books can also 100% fit into the Paranormal prompt for this challenge! Clearly, I'm not done talking about Beneath Black Sails and with my massive love for the morally grey pirate, Lady Vice, how the heck did you expect me to leave her out? She's my queen! A Kiss of Iron is a story about Lady Vice's sister, Kat, who also flirts with the lines of right and wrong. Want something slow burn but also super 🥵? This be it. The Stars Are Dying - One of my fave the villain gets the girl books and um oh yes... He's also a shadow daddy 👀👀. 📖 Sweet as Sin Romance Readathon 📖 Hi friends! 👋 Given we are counting down the days to the start of the Sweet as Sin readathon and I was going through my books to see what I'm going to read, I thought it would be fun if I gave you some recs from my smutty feb reads over the last couple years! If you swipe, you'll also see some books on my TBR for this year! I've got plenty of options for my mood reading gremlin lol. The first thing you'll probably notice is that I don't have any alien recs - I've only read Ice Planet Barbarians! 😂 I need to fix that, hence Choosing Theo being on my TBR (and cause @dayowlreads won't stop screaming about it 😂). Muscles & Monsters and Tentacles & Triathlons - arguably my favourite monster romance series because it is as heartwarming as it is spicy. T&T definitely hit different. I haven't read book 3 yet, Mantras and Minotaurs, so that is definitely on my TBR! I just read Monster Pucker for smutmas and let me tell you - SO FUN! Think hockey player romance but make it MMF and with monsters! Also, heartwarming! I also read Wed to Jack Frost for smutmas and, while it has a slower start, I found it real cute and it made me chuckle! @laylafaeauthor definitely has a whole slew of monster romances that will fit the bill for this prompt! The Dragon's Bride was just double the fun... If you catch my drift... 👀 Surprisingly, not as spicy as I expected given the potential but dragon... so smash! Note that I didn't like book 2 with the Kraken at all! But the gargoyle in book 3 has me 👀👀. The entire Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers series - here I have Slaying the Shifter Prince by my beloved @claresager . These definitely are more on the romantasy side but so fun! The next one I want to dig into is Slaying the Vampire Conqueror but seeing my TBR, I might need to slip that one into paranormal 😂. Morning Glory Milking Farm - Look... This book is real weird at the beginning but trust me and push through. 100% worth it and also in the heartwarming category! Lady of Rooksgrave Manor - this author has a wild imagination and definitely said: Why choose only one monster? I still need to read book 2, so TBR it is!

Teaching is so all encompassing that I find it challenging to switch off. Nearly one month in and I'm leaving work before 5pm three times a week and I'm no longer replying to emails in the evenings or weekends. So far so good!
