So lately I’ve been reading #savethecatwritesanovel and man… Aside from making me feel like I need to rework and rewrite my entire WIP, it’s been incredibly helpful in outlining the “beats” that are common to almost every good story. I can’t wait to to start editing my novel with this in view And, most importantly, it was so good to be reminded that the work I’ve put in - even the stuff I don’t love that will eventually get scrapped and stripped out of the story - not a sentence of it was wasted. —————— “I didn’t say the writing was going to be any good. There’s a saying that when you read a book, you get 5-10 years experience (sometimes more) in a sitting and that especially rings true for books like these! The save the cat book on screenwriting is really good, I think it’s the best in the series. The save the cat book on novel writing is decent. It goes over story structure, but I wish it would’ve touched on other topics such as editing, getting published, and finding a literary agent. When you feel like you’ve gotten enough of your story out that you could maybe finally fill in your save the cat beat notecards…and then you realize there are so many questions that need to be answered about the protagonist and the plot…so you doodle out a map of the world where the story takes place instead of answering those questions because you’re overwhelmed (but then the back of your brain works out a few of the answers while you’re drawing evergreen trees so maybe not all was lost)

✏️ I know I primarily talk about my reading ventures on this account (that’s the primary purpose of its existence, after all), but I’m also a writer! So last night’s venture was Jessica Brody’s craft book SAVE THE CAT! WRITES A NOVEL. Thoughts: SUCH an easy read. For something attempting to explain the complexity that is storytelling, I was impressed with Brody’s ability to keep each section brief and to the point, neatly summarizing the craft choices she makes with this format and why. Her voice is super friendly throughout, and makes the book feel more like a favorite professor’s lecture than a “writing manual.” I read AND annotated the entire book in a night. As a writer, if you’re thinking of reading this, I would say absolutely go for it, but keep in mind that art is subjective. I don’t think you should use STC as a “rule book” by any means. It’s really helpful as a guide to looking deeper into your story, though, and gets you to think about things in your story you haven’t necessarily fleshed out yet. Writing a Christmas book in March is fun and a bit odd 😄lol Yesterday, I went back to throwing down early drafts for Bella book 4, a bit of book 5, and last-minute tweaks on book 3. Book 3 is due next week with my editor and friend Soulla @soullasays I'm laying down my beats, and happy with what happens at my Theme Stated beat. Bella has another life lesson to learn. But before any of that happens, she and her friends will be taken through more ups and downs, new challenges, and spooky obstacles when she realises that Christmas Wonderland is not the same when she returns. What is she going to do? 😱 So pleased my daughter Annabelle has offered to be one of my beta readers this year. Although she has a long moved onto YA such as Rick Riordan novels, Tamzin Merchant, and Stephen King (brick-sized books), she is more than happy to read my tiny middle grade books. 🖊️ SURPRISES WHEN WRITING 🖊️ As a plantser/pantser most of the time when writing, I'm used to the story or characters throwing their own twists into the story. It's one of my favorite things about writing, and often the parts I love most in a story come from those surprises. But recently, I've been surprised by how easily some scenes are taking shape. They're tricky scenes with a lot of plot and arc significance, and while I've been looking forward to them I have also been anxious. I want to get them right. I want them to have the right cadence and pacing and tension and words. And while some of the scenes do have their challenges, I've been pleasantly surprised by the ease of writing them too. Even if they aren't exactly how I pictured them, the important parts are there. Characters are dealing with big thoughts and emotions. Plot things are happening. The story is moving along at a pretty steady pace, writing-wise. And it's a nice surprise, watching the story unfold and being able to enjoy the process along the way. . . . . . . What kind of writer are you? Plotter, Pantser, or Plantser? . So far in my writing journey, I have been a pantser. I’ve need exploring my fantasy world, meeting my characters, and figuring out *how* to write a novel. It has taken a while to reach this point (3.5+ years, actually), but after starting this book and learning more about writing skills, I think I’m ready to take the leap of planning a bit more detail. . That’s one of the great things that this book teaches. Mapping your beats doesn’t have to come first, or after you finish your first draft, or in the middle of writing. It’s a necessary step that can happen when you, as the writer, need it to happen. I’m nearing the end of my first draft and will be using this as I finish the draft and start revising. . Lots of love for the books I read in February ♥️ Spoiler free reviews: 🗡️ Throne Of Glass ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ There are different routes to take when reading this series, but I chose to start with TOG. I found the story line predictable but still enjoyable, and SJM never fails to write great characters. I struggled to see its ties to Cinderella (as it’s supposedly a retelling) but other than the weird clock that chimes every now and then and possibly the glass castle eluding to the glass slipper, I didnt see the connection. Still an easy and fun read though. 👑 Crown Of Midnight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The second book in the series… it took me a lot longer to get through only because I’m an empath and boy did this make me feel things. Yes I cried, but I also became so angry that I started projecting it in real life and had to take a two day hiatus from reading until I calmed down 😂 Makes me a bit worried for the rest of the series, but I’ll try to stay strong. 🐱Save The Cat! Writes a Novel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not my typical genre, but I saw this book a lot in my feed since I started to take writing more seriously. It really helped me a lot with my outlining and allowed me to get my clustered trash pile of ideas organized in a way that makes sense for a novel. Definitely would recommend for new writers just starting out! Over the weekend, I came to a conclusion.... I need to restructure my novel. It naturally bummed me out a bit, but I couldn't deny it any longer: stuff's just not working. And I want the stuff to work. Thank goodness for one day shipping because this beauty of a book was in my hands within 24 hours, and I feel a little less panicked. But just slightly because the idea of restructuring is super scary! I am, however, looking to the positives that this process will hopefully bring, which is a stronger story that I'm proud of! It's a great day to stay inside with some books and a hot drink 🍄 ☕ 📚 ** -10 F feels like -34 F with the wind 🌬️ This weekend I got to try my first mushroom coffee drink, SuperNatural Coffee Alternative from Omyym! 🍄 Pros: This particular one with ingredients like Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps, and cacao tasted like a light cocoa.
