The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald Once more I’m convinced, that Fitzgerald is one of my absolut favorite authors (probably mostly the parts he stole from his wife, so Zelda might be my favorite author as well? Idk). He has a way of putting the ordinary, the mundane in words that feel so rich, so perfect, so made for the exact mood he is describing... Ughhh. Admittetly, his stories aren’t the most entertaining or action packed, instead he lures you in with beautiful prose, sometimes like a poem, then again a play, way to dramatic to be realistic but conveying so much raw heartache and emotions, it makes you wonder how someone 100 years ago felt the same things as you do now. At its core, this is a story about wealth, morality, two people in love and as their fortune decreases, so does eventually said love. It’s a sad story and it is not. Gloria and Anthony are the reason for their own misery, misery they’ve brought about themselves with pride and ignorance. Waiting for the promised inheritance wears them down until they eventually lose all their friends, their status and their respect for each other and themselves. Well… reading my little summary, this doesn’t sound like an exciting story at all, but I would read a grocery list, had it been written by one of the Fitzgeralds (next up is Save me the Waltz, I desperatly need to read it). It’s unusual for me to like something simply for the writing and themes, but the lack of plot, three dimensional characters and messed up pacing, all falls to nothingness, considering the damned beautiful (pun intended lol) prose. read this if you like the 1920s, flappers and all that, new york, pretty prose, insufferable characters, rich people doing rich people shit, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Gone Girl…

Dear Scott, I've now read all your novels, all your stories (including those recently published), all your published letters and even that whopping biography by Bruccoli. I dearly wish The Beautiful and Damned hadn't been our last encounter, though had it been the first, well, I'd probably have moved on to Hemingway. Anthony is a lazy layabout snob, heir to the Patch fortune. Gloria is spoilt, vain, and looking to be kept in squirrel furs. They're a match made in heaven, until Anthony gets himself disinherited and the pair have to try living in the real world. There's no more to the plot than that, Scott. To be brutally honest, it drags. There's nobody to love here. The monotony is alleviated by flashes of your brilliance. Did they come when you were drunk or sober? I was happier whenever Dick Caramel, Anthony's writer friend, was on the page. You say his novel 'hesitated and then suddenly "went".' The secret of the book's success, you write, was some clever press-agenting which spread rumours that a celebrity was suing 'because one of the principal characters was a burlesque of himself' as well as some 'innuendo that Richard Caramel was in a sanatorium with delirium tremens.' Say no more, Scott. I'll be dropping a line to my agent as soon as I'm done here. But who to insinuate as the litigious celebrity?! I adored the line where Dick complains to Anthony about the new novels on the shelves. 'My God!' he says. 'Everywhere I go some silly girl asks me if I've read This Side of Paradise ...If it's true to life, which I don't believe, the next generation is going to the dogs.' I love it! Such witty sending up of your own success. Bravo! I also loved the wickedly Fitzgeraldian twist at the end when Anthony and Gloria get their comeuppance. You wrote this at the same time as The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, which I much prefer. The Beautiful and Damned, in my humble opinion, would make a very good short story if you'd only cut about 300 pages. Sorry Scott, you know I love you, but I wish I'd let this one go unread. I recently finished The Beautiful and Damned, Fitzgerald’s second published novel, which precedes the publication of his masterpiece The Great Gatsby. . When it was published, The Beautiful and Damned was met with lukewarm and dismissive criticism. The first quarter of it is painfully overwritten, a sophomoric attempt by a brilliant mind obviously straining for a greatness he does not yet have the ability to achieve. I nearly put it down at first; the sincerity with which the characters regard their early twenties as the pinnacle of their lives (and everything after: decay) is so eye-roll inducing (to a reader of 36) that I nearly couldn’t stomach its empty sentiment. If you’re familiar with Family Guy, let me borrow a joke from that comedy: it insists upon itself. . But once Fitzgerald moves past the set-up and Gloria marries Anthony, allowing Fitzgerald to pull more readily from his own, stormy life with Zelda for inspiration, the first glimpses of something real, something with more meaning and weight are visible. Every time I thought I’d put the book down, I picked it back up, finding myself still thinking about it hours later. The self-consciousness with which Fitzgerald explores his divided self-assessment/worth in Anthony and Richard Caramel was worth the read alone. . It’s still only an echo of Gatsby, a whisper of what’s to come, but the bedrock and foundation is all there, right down to specific lines, characterization, and metaphors (I came to a dead halt when he mentioned “the sick and the well”). If I hadn’t read Gatsby over and over again before coming to this book, I would have found myself bored and a little annoyed…but taken in the shadow of Gatsby, the result is the glimpse of a mind honing its genius, refining its gold for something brilliant, something timeless, yet to come.

The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Spoiler alert + don't use pics/caption without giving credit): The old known phrase of love is not enough after marriage is soo true by the way it was described in this novel. From wars to relationship problems to unemployment, this novel actually described everything! And it makes me wonder how beautiful our life is, and how little we notice our daily life. Anthony had a great friend circle; he could have done well, but he relied more on the fortune; he faced financial crisis too, but what makes me wonder is that he acted more like a pessimist. All he chased was his grandfather's fortune, which seems fair too. But I pitied Gloria a lot. I guess she deserved better, but whenever I read her part, I understood how important it is to be educated as a girl. And when she aged, I loved the part where she was crying for the fading beauty. It made me wonder what beauty actually is after we age. The worst part was when Anthony was cheating on Gloria with Dot. Dot moved to a new army camp with Anthony.
