Digestion switches ON 🎚️when we take a chill 💊 This means focusing on our food, and sitting down WITHOUT our phones👀 📲, and maybe taking a few deep breaths.⁣ This has made a massive difference in my digestion personally, I used to feel super full after each meal with a bit of reflux. Not to mention👇🏻 The practice of simply calming down and focusing on their food has also given many of my clients that bloat-free, no heartburn shift they thought was out of reach!⁣ I LOVE TO SEE IT!⁣🤌🏻 If you find yourself constantly wired and anxious before meals. Or feeling like you can barely take 5 minutes to actually sit down and eat. Try this out this week and see how the bloat improves.⁣ Here we go!⁣ 4-7-8 Breathing Practice:⁣ 1- Inhale for 4 counts through the nose⁣ 2- Hold at the top for 7 counts⁣ 3- Exhale through the mouth slowly for 8 counts⁣ Then put that phone away or take time to eat away from your screens! When we are stressed or distracted during our meals, this can lead to things like 🚩stomach cramps 🚩constipation/diarrhea 🚩food sensitivities 🚩period symptoms like cramps, breast tenderness, PMS) 🚩Low energy 🚩acne And more! What a hidden gem just outside of Watford, Herts in Oxhey Village! My lovely friend Kellie @oakesorganising happened to share an interest in a Clothes Swap event being held at @refillabell_watford which caught my eye this morning. Sometimes being a little impulsive and quick to respond to opportunities can lead to delightful outcomes! In this case, the choice to participate in a clothes swap is not completely spontaneous - Kellie and I are members of a Style Icons membership created by Alex @luxeleopardlifestyle who has been teaching us how to become more purposeful and conscious when buying clothes. A big part of this includes making more sustainable purchases and buying preloved clothes. So, I gathered some clothes I would like to trade for things that suit me better (now I know what my actual style is - thanks Alex!) and took a trip to find the store. Knowing nothing about Refillabell, I was so pleasantly surprised at what was hiding just off the busy roads of Bushey and Oxhey Village. As you can see, it’s a beautiful store with so many fantastic products. If you’ve never been to a refill store before, you can take your own containers and stock up on food, teas, toiletries, cleaning products and more. In doing so you help to do your bit to reuse what might otherwise be single-use jars and plastics. The products are reasonably priced and you get complete control over how much you buy, which can save on waste too. The vaginal pH plays a huge role in determining vaginal health and vaginal care is a serious issue for women. 🌸 Normal vaginal pH ranges between 3.8 and 5.0, which is moderately acidic. A lower pH value (more acidic) in the vagina than the blood or interstitial fluids can protect vaginal mucosa from pathogenic organisms. 🙌🏻 The vaginal pH can be affected by: • age • vaginal hydration status • daily diet • safe intercourse 🌸 Maintaining a healthy vaginal pH is characterized by the metabolism of Lactobacillus acidophilus and other flora, estrogen, glycogen, and existing flora and pathogens. Microorganisms stabilize the vaginal ecosystem. 🌸 Lactobacilli ferment glycogen into lactic acid and release hydrogen ions which keeps pH between 4-4.5 and provides protection and prevents imbalance in the vaginal ecosystem. 🌸 An imbalanced ecosystem can cause an unusual vaginal pH and can be used to determine the presence of bacterial pathogens as well as menopausal status. An increase in vaginal pH may also lead to bacterial vaginosis and spontaneous preterm deliveries (PD) in pregnant. 🔬Monitoring pH level, even with self-testing, can be used to effectively manage and prevent infection. Things I'm looking forward to in May 🌤️👇 🔹More sunshine & vitamin D (an obvious one!) If you live in the UK, it certainly feels like we’ve been starved of vitamin D of late! Did you know though that many factors affect how much vitamin D we get from the sun? For example, the skin produces more vitamin D when in the midday sun, when the sun is at its highest point. In addition, the more skin you expose to the sun, the more vitamin D the body will make. Whilst paler colour skin makes vitamin D more quickly than darker coloured skin tones. Current advice is to stay in the sun for half as long as it would take your skin type to burn. This could be as little as 15 minutes for someone with a light skin tone and could be up to a couple of hours for someone with a dark skin tone. 🔹Longer days Bye-bye to long, dark days for a while! The sun rose at 5.31am in London today and will set at 8.24pm. By 31st May, the sun will rise at 4.49am and set at 9.07pm hooray! 🔹Summer salads I love a summer salad, but I try to keep mine hormone friendly and balanced. To do this, I include a source of protein (like tuna, mackerel, chicken or tempeh), some slow-releasing carbs (like sweet potatoes, brown rice or quinoa), plus some pulses like lentils or chickpeas which help make salads more filling. I like to add a source of good fats, such as extra virgin olive oil, olives, nuts or seeds and make sure I add plenty of colour with lots of veggies that are in season. 🔹Eating in season Baby potatoes, white asparagus, leafy carrots, radishes, rocket, watercress and cauliflower are all in season in May. It’s also rhubarb and strawberry season in the UK, two of my favourites. 🔹Rooftop cocktails 🍸 It’s all about balance, after all! What's a good protein bar to go for?⁣ ⁣ 🤔 This is a question I get asked a lot, so here's a quick guide. ⁣ ⁣ 👉 First, protein bars are definitely not essential. They can just can be an easy and convenient choice for when you're busy or out and about, and (for some) a tasty alternative to other snacks. ⁣ ⁣ ✅ They have the added benefit of boosting your protein intake (very important for keeping hold of muscle as we get older 💪) and helping you stay fuller for longer (supporting weight loss goals).⁣ ⁣ Grenade, Fulfil, and PhD smart bars are some of the best / tastiest / most easily available brands in supermarkets, some petrol stations, Holland and Barrett, and online.⁣ ⁣ Fulfil bars come in two different sizes - the 40g one can make a great snack if you're wanting something small and slightly lower in calories, to keep you going until your next meal. ⁣ ⁣ Trek bars are also good. Not quite as high in protein (other options may be better if you're low on protein that day), but made from more natural ingredients, and they're usually a bit cheaper. ⁣ ⁣ 🧐 Around 20g protein and 200 calories are good ballpark figures for a general protein bar. But it's fine to be a bit under/over that if you find one you like, that helps keep you fuelled when you need it.⁣ ⁣ The bottom 3 in the graphic are vegan bars - they tend to have slightly more calories / less protein, but these ones have more protein than many other vegan options.⁣ ⁣ With any of the bars, if they're larger or higher in calories than you're wanting, chopping them in half or into chunks can work well. Over 1 million Australians suffer from eczema, while globally it affects around 1 in 10 adults. I am one of those and while it's not severe, it's bad enough to impact my general wellbeing, especially when I get it on my scalp.⁠ ⁠ Luckily there's some really good research being done when it comes to eczema and nutrition has been found to be a powerful tool to help you manage it.⁠ ⁠ Studies have shown that our gut and skin are connected via the gut-skin axis. This means when our gut microbiome gets unbalanced or when there's a lot of inflammation in our gut, this often means our eczema symptoms worsen or we have a flare-up. ⁠ ⁠ Making sure we look after our gut-microbiome is key in helping us manage our eczema. So how do we do this?⁠ ⁠ We want to add a wide range of different fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds to our meals. The more variety and colours the better! Do you have Diastasis Recti? It’s ok you’re not alone. Chances are if you have carried a baby you probably have some degree of Diastasis. It’s important to get assessed in order to understand the width and depth of your separation. You can also do a self assessment to check. Doing the right core exercises plays a huge role in minimising your abdominal separation. Doing core exercises that are too strenuous can actually make the situation worse. To minimise your Diastasis and improve your core you want to: ✅ Avoid holding your breath and straining during core exercises, this increases intra abdominal pressure which isn’t good for separation. ✅ Learn how to properly activate your Transverse Abdominis. ✅ Avoid exercises that create “doming” through your midline. ✅ Start slow and in the early stages of core training don’t look for the “burn” when doing core exercises. Focus more on training your deep core through slow and controlled movements rather than fast sit ups, twists and advanced movements. Not sure where to start? This ratio is super telling. We can see how much thyroid hormone is actually ENTERING your cells and therefore useable to you. Even if you can get your GP to do a full thyroid panel - many don’t, this just shows how much thyroid hormone is circulating in the blood. Then they will likely prescribe you something to speed up your thyroid if it’s slow. But imagine from the perspective that your thyroid is slowing you down for a reason, to prevent further burnout, OR that your thyroid is lacking critical minerals for it’s function, meds aren’t going to much good are they! When calcium is elevated (greater than 4) relative to potassium this indicates trend towards HYPO thyroid When calcium is low (less than 4) relative to potassium this indicates trend towards HYPER thyroid.

How lovely to receive a handwritten thank you note from one of the charities @njtlisamccallum and I raised £1793 for in March. As team @businesswomenunltd Lisa and I swapped our beds for the concrete floor of the stands of Watford Football Stadium. We slept in very cramped and cold conditions with only a vague hint of what it might really be like for homeless people sleeping on our streets. The Dreams United Stadium Sleep Out was a fantastic collaboration between @wfctrust @newhopehq @densindacorum @hertsyounghomeless and @oneymca and as part of the event we are proud to have helped towards the total raised so far which is £51k! There is a saying in nutrition that lot's of women don't know how good being healthy feels! I was one of these people! I use to think I was healthy, I did what all the magazines said, I went to the gym, ate what I thought were healthy foods. But I was knackered and bloated all the time! And I thought this was normal, I worked long hours in London, I had always been bloated so didn't think that could change. And I always struggled to shift the fat around my waist no matter how much I dieted or exercised. I got fed up being like this so dived into the research into nutrition and our bodies, and I made the diet and lifestyle changes I learnt about. Over the next few months everything changed, the bloating was gone, the fat around my waist disappeared and I was wide awake every evening.
