I must make a confession. Though many consider me to be a very relaxed mother, the mental strain of 7 children under 9 can give some anxiety. I am not talking bouts of anxiety as people usually get. What I have is low grade constant anxiety during the day and right up until they are all asleep. Only then does the fire in my stomach die down and my heart beat goes back to normal. This is also part of the reason I do let my children indulge in screentime once all the schooling is done in the afternoon (they are watching Winnie the Pooh) because when they watch they are all together in one room and my brain does not have to keep wondering what they are doing outside or in the other rooms. My goal is and has always been to be screen free but in my situation, holding myself up to such a standard is going to take a toll on my mental health. So for the moment, while I mostly survive during the day, screentime in the afternoon is acceptable to me. If you are a mother (to one or multiples) tell me in the comments what is one thing you let slide in order for motherhood to be more enjoyable and doable. No judgement from me, only encouragement. Watching children grow up is full of teaching moments. We want to protect them from everything, and it doesn't take long to realize that no matter how hard we try, we can't prevent every scraped knee and every heartache. I could write about everything that I've learned thus far in hopes that my kids will listen and avoid hard times, but we all know how that goes. They will need to learn many lessons on their own. I've asked my parents before why they didn't speak up more when I was around peers (or boys) that were not good for me. They said because if they did, I would have only pushed them away, and it would have had the opposite effect. And they were probably right. Sometimes, we have to let children figure out hard lessons on their own and then be there with open arms when the dust settles and the lessons are learned. We can help children navigate through our teaching, but often, it has to be from their experiences. Knowing this is tough because we instinctually want to protect them from anything that could cause a tear. Raising children requires us to ask God for guidance. One day, our kids will be grown, and they will have a few scars and some stories that they'll want to share with their children to try and protect them as well. But, like themselves, and the generations before them, children often have to learn many things on their own. This may be one of the hardest parts of being a parent, but with God's help- they will emerge wiser and will have a few scars to remind them of life lessons to teach their own kids.❤️ Do you think this is one of the hardest parts of parenting, too? Update on the CCR family being called Grandpa & Grandma by 3 siblings. We had another CCR family reach out to us after our CCR online support meeting, and they asked if they could treat us to dinner sometime (to give us a little extra help). On the day they sent us the dinner, we had a very long, tough day as the two older kids had to have a couple of difficult appointments. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end that day. Our oldest three children are 14, 13, and 12 years old for the next two weeks! I can’t help but think about this every year and how crazy it is that their birthday’s fall like this. There are 15 months between Tripp and Lizzy and 20 months between Lizzy and Harper. I love how close they are and how at any given time you can find Tripp and Lizzy hanging out, Lizzy and Harper hanging out, and even Tripp and Harper hanging out too. I love this about them! When I think of the 6 years that my baby has brought light to our world- so many things come to mind: I think of the toughness of this kid- how he grew up kind of quickly as the fourth boy- and the boy to become the closest-in-age-brother to the only girl. I think of how he might perceive his world…his family and the ups and downs he rides- as there is no way out of that- being born a member of a family- a big family- and a member of a world- a big world. Dad calls him “Big Butt Ben” because he’s the more burly of the boys- and because he’s a strapping thing in mind and body. Boy, he loves his Dad so much- they joke and have a whole dialogue thing- they kinda “get each other”. Blair is impressed with Ben’s quick wit- Ben’s never bored of Blair’s shock value- it’s one of those wonderful things- that you know is shaping this kid in a way that will always matter. I think of his sense of loyalty, sense of humor, his real boyishness, his love of friendship. I think of his good looks. I mean, sure I’m his mother- but those blue eyes are swoon worthy and only getting better with age (6 today to be exact). I think of how my sweet son- made me a Mama of ALL boys once- officially the mother of 4 boys- one of my greater achievements. I think of this time of year- 6 years ago- when I had him in the hospital- just your typical 8 pound baby- pretty uneventful birth (can’t even recall if this is the birth where both my doctor and Blair feel asleep while I was pushing)- I think about when we returned to Johnson Ranch- my health club at the time- at 6 weeks postpartum- I would workout in the hallway- next to the nursery- so I could come-arunnin when he cried. I would sit in the nursing chair steeped in postpartum-baby-blues and cry while feeding him- then run back to finish my workout. I think of the sweet lovely ladies who worked in that kid’s room- and would compete with each other to hold him. I think of how I would say- “4 under 40” back then- like I had it all figured out (I didn’t). I think of how much he’s loved- How much he loves. How I’m so grateful to be sitting in my minivan outside his school- writing this right now. Happy 6th to our one of a kind, Bennett.

Today may be a short and sweet post. I'm going to just leave this cute picture here as I follow Beau around having entered a new (and very busy baby) stage. He is at probably the most challenging phase from a mama's perspective right now- that stage right after they learn to walk- where they have newfound independence with their wobbly steps combined with lots of curiosity. The stage where they seem to seek out danger every chance they get! So, I'm playing one to one defense during his waking hours, both enjoying his adorable little games, while trying to protect him from himself and stay one step ahead. I also want to tell other mama's in similar stages that long days are not bad days, and we can acknowledge both things at the same time. Toddlers can be both hard AND wonderful. They can be challenging AND also fill our hearts with love. They can take all our energy AND still make us miss them when they sleep. Stages are just that- and 6 months from now, we will be in a whole other season and look back on this time with a smile. We had such a fun party yesterday for Jenna's birthday. I always say the goal of a birthday party is to make the honoree feel special. Over the years, I've come to realize that the way to do this is not always by lots of presents. They do get a few presents, but I think what makes them feel the most loved is that the whole day is to celebrate them. It starts when they wake up and get their favorite foods all throughout the day. They get to hear their birth story and how much joy they brought to our family. They are serenaded as they blow out the candles on the cake they requested us to make, and the decorations are also the ones they selected. They day is all about them. ❤️ In a big family, many times things are done because it's best for the whole group. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just how it is- like where we eat, places we go, etc. We take the route that is best for everyone :) But, on a birthday, it is all about the birthday child. Whatever they want to eat and do is what happens on their big day. I love watching the happiness on their face, but it's equally as sweet how happy the other kids are to celebrate their sibling's birthdays. This is our last family birthday until July. Augustina Higuera (Texas, USA) has 15 children, all girls, including three sets of twins! Belicia, Nyelli, Liliana, Vanessa, Daniela, Cecilia, Luz Elena, Marielena, Annalilia, Araceli, Hailee, Braelee, Isabelle, Bella and Monica The family was featured in a Daily Mail article titled “Supermum, 29, has 14 daughters but says she won’t give up until she has a son” in 2016. In the article she said “It’s chaos looking after 14 girls but we wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve always wanted to be a mum. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time looking after my younger brother and sister. Although twins run in my family, I never expected I’d have three sets. I know we’re blessed.” Sadly Augustina passed away after a car crash in 2020. My baby girl is 16 years old today. The one who first called me mommy. 🥹 16 years ago, we saw her sweet face for the first time. Sometimes in life, there are moments that are so pivotal that you can refer to them as before that event and after that event - a moment where one chapter ends and another begins. Such is true of the day Jenna was born. There is life before that day and after that day. We were forever changed. We were parents. We were a family. My heart had never been so full. I found a love I never knew existed - both in my baby girl and her daddy. The way Lucas loved her instantly made me love him that much more. In many ways, we grew up alongside one another. We have moved numerous times, changed jobs, finished residency, welcomed many babies to our family, and she was there with us through all of it. That first baby is so special. It's such a big moment that changes someone forever. Jenna is such a blessing in our lives, and I am so thankful for our strong bond. Even as a small child, Jenna had a lasting impression on others. She is beautiful, funny, wise beyond her years, positive, mature, driven, smart, helpful, creative, and to know her is to never forget her. Her love of Jesus is inspiring. She's simply amazing, and I'm so thankful to get a front row seat to her life. I have told Jenna many times how much strength she gave me - even before I saw her face. I shared more about this in stories today. All of our children are special. But, Jenna was the one that started this beautiful chapter, and so today we celebrate her 16th birthday and also the most amazing chapter of our lives since she arrived and everything changed ♥️ Will you join me in wishing Jenna a happy 16th birthday today?
📝Book Review 📝 Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar This one kept catching my eye at the library and I finally decided to give it a go! I remember watching some of their show 19 Kids and Counting when it was on tv and I was interested to read more about her life given from her point of view. Really I found the story to be pretty sad and hard to wrap my head around. First of all 19 kids!! 🤯 The eldest kids were basically surrogate parents to the younger ones which we could debate the pros and cons of. However, Jill relayed that she loved it. Loved taking care of her youngest siblings and loved working on the new house they built, even though there were some in the media that said the family was using the children for child labor. It’s hard to understand the lies and deception from her parents all in the name of religion. The kids were duped into signing a contract they had no knowledge of, pressured into filming without receiving any type of payment, not to mention the abuse the girls suffered that intentionally went unreported. I’m glad Jill found her voice and was able to separate herself from her upbringing and the cultish religious teachings that ruled their lives. #qotd Did you watch this show? It's another baseball weekend! These are the ones that we will look back and remember fondly. These weekends of game after game may leave our laundry rooms full of clothes, our kitchen left with messes to clean up, and our beds unmade. These days leave parents tired and dirt covered kids in need of a bath! But, the quality time spent together while watching a game that we all love is worth all the sacrifices made and work put on hold to be there. This weekend, we will have watched six baseball games from Friday to Sunday. Each one is memorable and something we look forward to and talk about afterwards. The little siblings of the baseball players all play together and occupy their time exploring around the perimeter of the field- some of their friends are familiar faces and others are new- but it doesn't matter because at the ballfield everyone is a friend. Oftentimes, the little kids don't even bother to ask what eachothers names are before playing for hours. The baseball moms all help one another capture videos and pictures if someone can't make it, and they never miss a play, usually watching the game through their camera as they record each play. The dads are always quick with their coaching advice as their son gets up to bat. You can hear how proud they are as they cheer. The good plays are celebrated by all, and the not so good plays are met with encouraging words. Packing for a baseball game is not much different than packing for a day at the beach. Everyone has their favorite chairs, their drinks and snacks, sunscreen and shade, lots of water, blankets, toys for the kids, and sunglasses. Packing and unpacking for a baseball weekend is a whole thing- and the baseball families are here for it. Baseball is just a sport, yes, but it is also an event that brings people together and is something that so many precious family memories are made of. Having a child turn 16 is one of those moments that makes a parent stop and look around like woah, what just happened! One day, they are born, and the next they are walking, then starting school, and then they drive. And that's about as fast as it goes, too! Watching your baby drive off without you for the first time is a pivotal moment in parenting. You want to put them in a bubble that protects them or go along with them always as if you could keep them safe. But, you also know that you were 16 once, and you drove off for that first time and that you were okay. Some of us have different stories, which makes letting our children go out into the world a little more nerve-wracking ;) But nonetheless, one day they will head out on their own and you will go inside and likely follow them on life 360 🙋🏼♀️ and pray and hope that everything you tried to teach them about driving and life is remembered as they make this big step. Being a parent requires so much faith. Letting go is so hard, but also so rewarding when you see that your baby, who was just starting school yesterday, is now so prepared to take on the world. My first vehicle was a little geo storm followed by a speedy Trans Am. My parents had a lot of faith- ha! The daddybear inststed Jenna get a big and safe Ford Excursion for her first vehicle. This, combined with Jenna's maturity, makes this milestone a little bit easier. This upcoming birthday also forces me to remember that God is sovereign, and He loves our children somehow even more than we do and will keep them safe. This will be my prayer every time I see my baby drive away. She is so ready for this step, even if her mama isn't quite there yet. ♥️ What was your first vehicle? Beau just turned one, and Jenna will be 16 in a few days. Having a 15-year age gap is wild. It's like seeing first hand how fast this stage of parenting goes while getting the opportunity to do it all again. It's like seeing the fruit of your labor in watching how she willingly cares for her baby brother. It's knowing that there are only a few years left at home with one and so many years remaining at home with the other. It's watching one become so independent and capable while the other still needs me for everything. It's seeing the bond between them and knowing the oldest will always remember this precious time, while taking lots of pictures because the youngest one may not remember these moments, but he can later see how special this bond was when he was a baby. It's talking to one about college and talking gibberish with the other. And both conversations are heartwarming. It's looking at the Beau and seeing Jenna at the same stage - in what really seemed to be the blink of an eye. It's a gift. Knowing how quickly this time will go by makes me perfectly content to just slow down and make the most of everything. It also makes me very intentional about the remaining two years I have with our oldest before she spreads her wings and flies. These years at home are the foundation for her whole life and is a responsibility not to take lightly. We could not be more proud of her and look forward to watching our little one grow up in a similar childhood as our oldest had- except with parents that have a little more wisdom.. and a few more gray hairs - both from the gift of this wonderful 15 year age gap. 🤍 What is the age gap between your oldest and youngest? The days leading up to our session, I was so exhausted, photos didn’t feel important. I honestly thought of canceling but I’m so glad I didn’t.. I’ll treasure these all my life and I’m sure our kids will too 🥹

Most of my projects are not ones that I think about for too long. I usually get ideas while I'm cleaning and then sort of impulsively put them into action! My kids and husband are never sure what to expect when they come come. Will there be wallpaper somewhere new? Will the furniture be rearranged? Will there be a playground under construction? You just never know- ha! Well, the other day I was cleaning the dog wash/downstairs laundry room and about to take on battling the dirty grout yet again. This room is one that is very used by dirty kids and animals as they come in from playing outside, so you can imagine the struggle to keep up with white grout. On a whim, I decided to paint the grout black. And I love it. The battle of mom vs grout is over! I may try to clean the upstairs laundry room grout one more time, but this is definitely a great plan B. Some people are more perfection over progress, but I tend to be the opposite- neither is right or wrong, but my family is never surprised by my crazy ideas. And this one may be one of my favorite small, but functional changes. Did I mention the project only cost $11? I'm trying something new- comment the word 'grout' to get the link to the paint pens that I used! 🖤 What do you think about this project?
