I heard the Ku Klux Klan nearly burned down the colored neighborhood in Gracetown and I’m afraid they’ll come for my family next.” . 1950s, Florida: Robert and his sister are walking to school when a man approaches Gloria. Things are said and unsaid, and Robert kicks the man in the knee. Just a schoolyard kick. Except that man is the son of a wealthy business owner who may or may not be tied to the Klan. Enter the Reformatory - a place Robert is sent to for the kick. The place is billed as a school, but what it really is is a place of beatings disguised as discipline, and a fierce kinship between the boys housed there. And the ghosts. The Reformatory is rumored to be haunted as all get out - but no ghosts to be seen, as long as the boys Robert runs into are all alive. Surely they are, right? . My first words when I finished this book were, “holy shit, this book.” I thought it many times while reading it too - all in Gracetown’s town, the courthouse with the white judge who thinks he’s doing a young black boy a favor, the “school” where children are beaten to death for things like being late or looking in the wrong direction, the way the NAACP could seem like it’s a sign of hope until it too is railroaded by an endlessly hateful society. I was not surprised, but crestfallen, to learn that while The Reformatory itself was not real, it was based off of the very real Dozier School for Boys, and dozens of others that should have never existed. Ever. Tananarive Due is an incredible storyteller. Every character was as detailed as they needed to be, and every bit of the length of the book was needed. This book is incredibly important, and should be read by just about everyone. Amy found the book in front of Cinderella’s Castle in Magic Kingdom. 🏰. It turns out Amy found a book already close to her heart! She writes, “I used to read this book ALL the time when I was younger. Can’t wait to pass it onto a new home.” I love that Amy’s experience with the book was the same as Baylee’s, and that the book holds so much meaning for them. Phew. What a week. We drove from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Wednesday, got in Thursday, took a detour to Niagara Falls for the day on Friday. The girls competed in the CRN National Irish Dance Championships Saturday and Sunday. In the middle of the night we drove through a 4 hour long snow storm. Talk about tense. Even as a Winnipegger those roads were not fun. Chicago traffic was insane as well. We had so many issues with the hotel with so many hidden costs. It was sickening. We also had to buy a microwave because microwaves are not included in the room we rented and I wasn’t about to spend a fortune on restaurants. My oldest daughter did fairly well and moved out of one of her dances. It was not my youngest daughter’s weekend however. She did not place well, but still came home with two medals. Last night during practice, my daughter ended up tripping over someone’s luggage when they decide to squeeze past her when she was in the middle of practising her dance with her team for today’s championship. She already had overuse injuries in both her ankles, and this was enough to completely take her out of the rest of the competition. So we are slowly getting ready to head the long way back home. On the plus side I got lots of reading done. I still have not cracked open Cannibal. 📚 Saturday is for Sleeves 📚 Another full Saturday of teen events! Right now we are waiting to enter our Senior daughter’s final state regionals with band! She plays the flute and I’m not the only person who believes she is phenomenal. I mean she auditioned and made state regionals!
