Let me start by saying that I couldn’t have picked a better book for my first book review ever! Us Against You is the second book in Backman’s Beartown Series and it is absolutely perfect. This book made me cry, and laugh, and then cry some more. Backman has a way of writing about the human experience that will leave you feeling every type of emotion in the span of a single book. The book picks following the events of Beartown a few months later. While the first 15% of the book does rehash the events of the first book, the rest of it is an absolute masterpiece! If you haven’t read Beartown, I highly recommend reading that first before getting to this book. We see in this book how the people of Beartown are adjusting to their new lives after the events of the first book, how things are falling apart for Beartown’s ice hockey club, and how Peter, Kira, Maya, and Leo are all dealing with the aftermath of what happened to Maya. Kevin is gone, he and his family have left town, broken by his actions- a small measure of justice since the actual justice system failed Maya. And then there is Benji, who is my absolute favorite in this wide cast of characters. This book focuses on Benji the same way the first book focused on Maya, and even though he doesn’t go through anything as horrific as what Maya went through, he does have to face his own challenges, his own form of discrimination, and his own demons. His story will leave you on the verge of tears with only the hope that no child ever has to go through what he has gone through. Full review is available on my Goodreads. 🏒 BEARTOWN SERIES 🏒 by Fredrik Backman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #1 BEARTOWN ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 “Most people don’t do what we tell them to. They do what we let them get away with.” It all starts with a whole bunch of different characters that are hard to keep track of and it is very heavy on hockey. I really enjoy the sport but not sure I enjoy to the point where it’s THAT important, you know? So the story just wasn’t landing for me. It felt tedious and hard to find something to connect to. But once the scene was set, it took off! Not sure if I would be able to pinpoint the exact moment it pulled me into its atmosphere and I was living in this small town with the group of these people. Somehow it all embedded itself into my heart. There are countless life truths nestled in the book without feeling preachy. This book is deep and heavy and covers a lot of ground. #2 US AGAINST YOU ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “It’s so easy to get people to hate one another. That’s what makes love so impossible to understand. Hate is so simple that it always ought to win. It’s an uneven fight.” The second book in series is heavy on town politics and has slightly less heart in it, in my opinion. There wasn’t as much attention to the characters we came to know and adore in the first book as they took a backseat to highlight less likable characters and political themes of the town. With that being said we still get to spend precious time with the boys. Similarly to its predecessor, US AGAINST YOU carries Backman’s prosaic and deeply immersive writing that keeps you tethered to the town. #3 THE WINNERS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “We fool ourselves that we can protect the people we love, because if we accepted the truth we’d never let them out of our sight.” I’m a little sad that the story of Beartown is over and by the end of THE WINNERS I was heartbroken. Honestly, I felt that it was a bit too long. Third of the book is spent introducing a whole bunch of new characters and a whole lot of windstorm. While Backman doesn’t disappoint with deep worldly truths and inner conflict, which is the main reason I ended up loving this trilogy so much, this book at nearly 700 pages is unnecessarily long.

After what happend in Spring, Beartown is on the brink of falling apart, and the people are desperate to find someone to blame. It leads to spiral of violence between two hockey towns, and in the end no one is safe. I don't have words how I'm feeling right now. I started the third part immediately after this because I fear that if I take a break I will be too scared to continue. It's heartbreaking and absolutely beautifully written. Also. beartown series // fredrik backman 🏒❄️🌲 this series is set in a remote Swedish town and revolves mainly around a junior hockey team. although the town’s inhabitants are all hockey obsessed, the story is SO much more than a typical sports fiction. the trilogy follows several different characters, each one so complex and well developed. i was almost overwhelmed at first with the amount of characters to keep track of, but ultimately i’m glad they were all included & felt that they all added an important element to the story. through backman’s writing, i felt i was able to fully understand the intentions and motivations of each character, which made me feel so connected to the overall story. not to mention, the author’s storytelling abilities are top notch!! i was captivated from the very first chapter of the first book, beartown. this is a story that will stay with me forever - absolutely sobbed when i completed the trilogy. There are fewer players and the town is still dealing with the aftermath of the first book. What I liked: this book is about so much more than hockey. Backman writes about humans, sports and emotions better than anyone. This book felt darker than the first in the series to me. However I felt like it was authentic to what would come next for the town and the team. The characters all developed and you learn more about them in this installment. I have been savoring these books and taking a break before starting the winners because I don’t want to say goodbye to these characters. This town will rejoice, but it will also start to burn.” Us Against You by @backmansk I didn’t realize how much these books would affect me but so many of Fredrik’s words pierced my heart and left me speechless. It’s about hockey yes, but it’s more about the town and the people that fill it. It’s about a small town, found family and mistakes we’ve made. I truly believe these characters will stay in my heart and I’ll forever think of them. This book is raw, honest and at times just sad to read but then you get moments where you are smiling with pride and joy. I will always recommend this one and the first, Beartown. Cannot wait to read The Winners. It was impossible to share all my favorite quotes from this book (even more from the first) but I did my best to share a couple in the slides. “The complicated thing about good and bad people alike is that most of us can be both at the same time.” When I decided to read this trilogy one book right after another, I wasn’t sure if I should review each one separately. But Fredrik Backman’s work is just so beautiful I decided each book definitely deserved its own square. Us Against You was much easier to get into than Beartown because all of the character development at the beginning wasn’t needed. We just jumped right back into everyone’s lives right where we left off. (This is another reason I wanted to read these back to back - I didn’t want to forget all the little details and then need that time to refresh my memory before continuing) The plot of this book centres around the rebuilding of the Beartown Hockey Club, and the mounting tension rising between Beartown and Hed - the rival team who took so many of Beartown’s players. Words turn into pranks which quickly turn into violence, and things get out of control. I’ve been living in a little Fredrik Backman Beartown bubble and I feel like I’ve given myself the opportunity to really appreciate his writing. For me, his greatest talent is how when he’s telling the story and moving the plot, he’s interspersing these beautiful vignettes which seem random at first and then tie everything together so perfectly it’s like magic. So many of the little passages bring tears to my eyes and make me stop and read them out loud to anyone who will listen. Backman’s talent is immense. I can’t wait to finish off this series. I hope my heart can handle it!
