I recently finished May Day by Jackie Kay, which I picked up last week at a book launch event hosted by @portybooks. I loved listening to Kay bring her poems to life and hearing about what inspired them. The poems are linked by politics, activism and memories of Kay’s parents who were politically active and participated in protests throughout Kay’s life. Quite a few feature political, historical and cultural figures such as Paul Robeson, Fanny Eaton, Peggy Seeger, Nina Simone, Harry Belafonte and more. I enjoyed both recognising references I knew and looking up others. Despite many names and references, the collection is not overwhelmingly intertextual but still personal, wound into Kay's upbringing and identity. As she said at the event, “For me, the political is personal too.” One of my favourite poems was A Life in Protest, which remembers various protests Kay attended throughout her life. I’ve never come across a poem that paints such a vivid aural as well as visual picture, complete with protest chants, specific songs, sounds and a whole verse of starkly contrasting silence. From cries of Venceremos during Hortensia Bussi de Allende’s visit to Glasgow in 1974 (“Hasn’t Madame Allende got beautiful hair, / my mum says”); to singing Glad to be Gay at 1984 pride; to a silent protest for George Floyd; to marching with her son in a pushchair to The Specials’ Free Nelson Mandela. A poem with an evocative built-in soundtrack that transports you to each different protests. Another favourite was A Banquet for the Boys which I did have to Google to fully understand, but loved when I did. It was written after Kay’s son was injured by the police in a Black Lives Matter march. The poem lists dishes Kay sent to her son as he recovered. “For Black Lives Matter some bamieh bel zeit. / Tabbouleh since you re all trans-affirming bros. / Halloumi to hail the halo round your afro. / Zucchini since you're so queer-affirming”. The Lamplighter is a choral play, bringing together the voices and experiences of several black female slaves. These combine with Scottish slave owners in an account that is brutal with its honesty and moving throughout. Kay brings life to history that is both emotional and educational. Trumpet (2024 Book 10) The Guardian described this book as ‘all about love’. I believe it is all about being human. Maybe those statements are one in the same but Trumpet is a tale of the messy lives of rich characters. No one is a saint, no one is completely fallible, no was is the former but everyone isn’t solely the latter. It’s a book about compassion and anger and loss and in the end understanding. It is a triumphant story. We follow the story of famous trumpeter Joss Moody’s widow, Millie, following his death and revelation that he was biologically a woman all along. We hear the voices of mainly three people, Millie (Joss’ Wife), Colman (Joss’ Son) and Sophie (A freelancer writing a book on Joss); with one shots of other lives touched by this event. The descriptions of emotion are such complete full pictures. It gives us an understanding of the fallout of death and the different ways it can shape us. Anger, heartache, regret, frustration and even a level of pleasure. Sophie, the freelancer, is despicable. A narcissist even. She acts as the societal view of those who are different in the way Joss was. She calls him perverse on multiple occasions, even though he just wanted to live as himself. She is self absorbed and doesn’t care about the person or people, only how it can benefit her. She is humanity in all its greedy uncaring glory. But, she is proven wrong by the kindness of others. The son on his journey to acceptance, the wife, the old band mates and friends from childhood. Those who are accepting and understanding, those who can appreciate the life of someone for who they were. It is beautiful and deeply sad in both a frustrating and empty mix. It is a story of struggle and how life can be that mix of golden and rust. Maybe, just maybe, it is a story about love. Devotion to each other. #bookstagram #bookreview #jackiekay #trumpet

The music lifts - up and up and up -my son’s scales, trails his long brown fingers. It is so particular. Doh ray me. He sits like time held still on the red piano stool. Fah soh la. The scales linger on his shoulders, circle his childhood, Te Doh, and saunter down the hall, to float above me in the kitchen cooking his dinner. The music mingles with the smells. Biding time; holding the moment well. In the interval, the strange space between notes, I chop onions. I stir and wait. Taste and pause. I grind some pepper. Sprinkle some sea salt. He plays Friday. And in they come, the children from another time; lifting their skirts, running by the dark river. And the bells of the past, they ring and ring; an old woman remembers how she used to dance, waltzing, waltzing into the night air. And the night waves rise and crash and falter. And the rocks are always bare and glistening. My son plays Arioso in F away into the future. I can hear him grow up, up and off, off and up. I can see us in the space between the bars: mother and son. Here we come and go. My boy will become a man. The light will seek the dark. The music, majestic, sweeps and turns, rising and falling, innocent and knowing. Pushing out its long limbs. The dance of the bones. It yearns and swings, through the heart of our home. January wrap up ! Slow month because frankly it took me three of the four weeks to read Shirley (which is very long & dull & conservative which should have meant I hated it but I really didn’t) but I enjoyed them all! Particularly All Down Darkness Wide! Ways of Living I found very beautiful & it’s all about women in London & I always enjoy reading places I recognise. It made me realise that I used to be much more into short stories & now I read hardly any & it made me want to rectify that! I just always find it difficult to corral my thoughts on them. I spent a happy hour in a sunbeam with Poems of Kindness, it’s nice when literature is nice!

I only gave #theadoptionpapers a read as we study a #jackiekay poem at work. It's lovely. Although the different typefaces can be a bit jarring it's well worth a read. Fine example of prose poetry.

Scottish books has made up around 45% of my read pile this year. As someone who is Scottish and proud this is a huge improvement from the 0% I used to read. 😍 Reading for me is often a journey to other countries, cultures and experiences. With that, I always missed out my own identity and feeling seen, heard and understood. Through Scottish books and @thescottishbookclub I reconnected with my own identity AND am learning about other cultures and experiences within our own country. Scottish books, to me give us a platform to be heard. Whether that be through our history, our people, our humour and indeed our shared and inherited trauma. All these things and more make us who we are. Each of these books are about an aspect of one wee small country and/or the people within it. Somewhere in these pages you’re bound to find someone representing you. 💛🏴 My favourites from the pile?
