A Spell of Good Things is Ayobami Adebayo's second novel - as much a story of modern Nigeria and human relationships and hurt as her first novel was. It explores the themes of poverty, abuse, corruption, education, bad leadership, political thuggery, family and love. The two main characters are Eniola, a teenage boy from an impoverished family, and Wuraola, a 29 yo doctor, the perfect daughter of a wealthy family, soon to be married to Kunle - the son of an ascendant politician. Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2023, shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize 2024. BOOK REVIEW: Stay With Me by Ayọ̀bĂĄmi AdĂ©bĂĄyọ̀(Fiction) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Stunning. Emotive. Gut wrenching. Stay With Me is a story about Yejide and Akin, a couple in love but struggling to have children. This is the first time I have read a book and saw valid reasons for the wrong doings of both of the main characters (đŸ€ŠđŸŸâ€â™€ïž). The book had me sitting on the fence, I did not know who to side with. I loved the exploration of fertility issues from both sides of the marriage. The burden and mental stress on Yejide’s body and the pressures surrounding Akin were so well written. I had tears in my eyes, reading through Yejide’s mental state whilst she was trying to conceive. This book will stay with me for a very long time. Loved it! Have you read this, what did you think?

Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo I’m Jamaican but I love stories from Nigeria. I’ve been seeing this book a lot lately so I decided to give it a go. I’m listening to the audiobook and I’m completely wrapped up in the story so far. As things are changing in Yejide and Akin’s marriage. This novel, set in contemporary Nigeria, follows the lives of two young people, each from a different segment of society. EniolĂĄ is from an impoverished family and his father has lost his job as a history teacher. After having to leave school because there is no longer any money for his education, he falls in with a wrong crowd of friends. WĂșrĂ olĂĄ is a young doctor from a wealthy family with the right political connections. She tries to find a balance between her career and the pressure her family is putting on her to get married. When WĂșrĂ olá’s boyfriend asks her to marry him, her family finally has reason to celebrate, but she then discovers hidden sides to his character. The story then becomes darker on all levels, against the background of a country that is run by corrupt politicians who don’t care about their people. This results in a gaping divide between the haves and the have-nots; the education system is poor, while there are also regular power cuts, the healthcare services are very bad and the country has a high crime rate. The two storylines ultimately come together in a devastating final chord. If you would like to see how life in Nigeria is today, this gripping story will certainly fascinate you. https://senia.nl/boeken/a-spell-of-good-things/ #ayobamiadebayo #aspellofgoodthings #senia #seniaenglish #englishlit #englishbook #english #newbook #booklist #seniabookclub #bookclub #netherlands #dutchreader #leesclub

Book review 📚 A Spell of Good Things follows the lives of two characters; EniolĂĄ, a young boy from a lower middle class family struggling to make ends meet and WĂșrĂ olĂĄ, a medical doctor in her first year of practice from a wealthy family. The book follows the lives of both characters and we watch them become intertwined as EniolĂĄ becomes entangled with a politician. This book left me conflicted. On one hand, the story telling was good (you can’t deny that AyĂČbĂĄmi AdĂ©bĂĄyĂČ is a stellar storyteller) but on the other hand, I found the first half of the book a bit hard to get into. I feel this is partly because I enjoyed reading Eniolá’s story in the beginning compared to WĂșrĂ olá’s story which (I felt) wasn’t as compelling in the beginning. The story picked up in the second half and I began to thoroughly enjoy WĂșrĂ olá’s journey. The end left me conflicted once again. I understood why it ended that way, but
 it left me feeling some type of way. #aspellofgoodthings #africanbooks #ayobamiadebayo #bookstagramghana #bookstagramuk #booktok #bookreview #bookrecommendations

"QuĂ©date conmigo". AyĂłbĂĄmi AbĂ©dĂ„yĂČ. Editorial Gatopardo. $26.000. #ayobamiadebayo

Mother’s Day is a difficult time for many of us. Like Timi in this story, some of us have complicated relationships with our mothers. Like Yejide, some are struggling with infertility, child loss, and trauma. This story brings comfort in remembering you are not alone in your suffering. Stay with Me is about a young Nigerian couple struggling with societal and family pressures due to infertility, which then leads to polygamy, infidelity, and so many plot twists and drama. This story keeps you engaged to the very end. Stay with Me stayed on my shelf too long! I’m a believer though that books find you in the right season. This one brought me comfort, shock, confusion and anger. The writing is so engrossing that I felt the bitterness of Yejide, and I emphasized with her the most. I appreciated how the book highlights sickle cell disease. Stay with Me was so good that I needed a sequel immediately upon finishing. I wanted to know more about Timi! So good. - #bookstagram #ayobamiadebayo #bookreview #readblackwomen #mothersday #motherhood

A LIRE ABSOLUMENT. #bookstagram #ayobamiadebayo #jailueditions #resteavecmoi

Stay with me by @ayobamidebayo What a captivating piece of literature! Ayobami Adebayo’s storytelling is truly remarkable. This book delves deep into societal expectations, particularly how women are unfairly blamed and targeted when it comes to matters of childbirth, as if they are solely responsible. It also sheds light on the profound insecurities men experience when faced with infertility. Akin’s lack of honesty with Yejide about his fertility struggles undoubtedly contributed to their shared pain and loss. While the ending is poignant, with Yejide having a surviving child, it’s hard to ignore the toll it took on her. Despite its beauty, one can’t help but question whether it truly qualifies as a happy ending, considering the sacrifices made. Overall, a sensitive and thought-provoking read. #africanliterature #ayobamiadebayo #nigerianwriters

« Saanu mi, malo, Omi mi, joo nitori Olorun. Saanu mi. Duro timi. Have mercy on me, don’t go, please. Stay with me. » « You can never cover the truth. Just as nobody can cover the sun’s rays with his hands, you can never cover the truth. » Set in Nigeria during the 1980s and 1990s, it’s the story of a married couple, Yejide and Akin. They desperately want a child, but Yejide can’t get pregnant, despite there being no medical reason to explain it. ( there is a reason you will know if you read the book 🙄) So Akin’s mother is pressuring him to take a second wife and get *her* pregnant, ensuring that the family name continues. It’s a book that deals very strongly with Nigerian culture, with the expectations that are placed on both men and women in society. It deals with the lengths that people will go to in order to become parents. It deals with motherhood and how that can be effected by the loss of a child. It deals with fatherhood and the concept of masculinity as a whole. And it deals with the different ways in which people react to their child having a terminal illness. I felt so sorry for YejidĂ©, even when I questioned her decisions, I could still feel the pain that marked her life from her birth on. « If the burden is too much and stays too long, even love bends, cracks, comes close to breaking and sometimes does break. But even when it’s in a thousand pieces around your feet, that doesn’t mean it’s not longer love. » The writing was beautiful, and I was pretty much hooked from the first page. And most choking it’s her first novel. My one very small gripe is that it’s a split narration, but there’s no indication at the beginning of each chapter as to who’s narrating the story. And it often took me a page or so to work out whether it was Akin or Yejide who was narrating. But that’s a really minor thing overall. This is a must read, I warned you ! #staywithme #ayobamiadebayo #fiction #nigerianbooks #bookstagram #book #livre #livrestagram #bookstagramfrance #bookreview #bookstagrammer #blackbookstagram #blackbookstagrammer #africanwriters

Vale a pena demais. Dear Reader, This week on poverty, politics and tragedy. We meet the haves, Wuraola and the have nots, Eniola. Both separated by the status of their family’s wealth but joined together by political corruption and the effects it has on their families. This is a novel that would leave you surprised, angry and constantly rolling your eyes while also giving you the ability to empathize and grieve with each family. The life Eniola once enjoyed had been stolen from him through the loss of his father’s job. All he wanted was to go to school and have a good education. I couldn’t help but empathize with the struggles he faced even when he made poor decisions that led to tragedy within his family. Whereas Wuraola does not feel like the prettiest in her family and by marrying a man that her family approves of and she receives attention for. She silently accepts his abuse. I love how the author skillfully hinted at her abuse and how it was something familiar within her fiancé’s family. While I rolled my eyes numerously because staying in abuse just because of ‘love’ or ‘sorry’ is never the answer. I felt for Wuraola. I don’t think I’ve ever turned a page so much, engrossed in how the story would turn out. The ending was not at all what I expected, but as Yeye says, “
life was war, a series of battles with the occasional spell of good things.” #bookcontent #bookworm #aspellofgoodthings #booklover #bookjournal #ayobamiadebayo

“Besides, what would be left of love without truth stretched beyond its limits.” Book Review: Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo Genre: Literary Fiction Swipe for book synopsis Pub: August 22, 2017 Rating: 5⭐ Thoughts: Y’all, this book had me hooked from the first page! Akin and Yejide’s love story stirred up so many feelings—frustration, anger, empathy, disbelief. đŸ˜© Set during Nigeria’s military coup, the book seamlessly weaves love and political chaos together. They start off as a young couple facing intense pressure from Akin’s family to have a child. When they can’t, things escalate dramatically—they even bring in a new young wife for Akin! đŸ«  I had to keep reading to see how this all played out! The drama and turmoil of desperate actions when biology doesn’t match societal expectations is just heartbreaking. đŸ„ș Akin and Yejide’s love story is complicated, but it’s so captivating. Adebayo’s captivating writing had me fully immersed in the characters’ lives. The shocking twists kept me guessing until the end, leaving me with a mix of emotions. Having both Yejide and Akin’s perspectives was intense—it added depth and helped me understand their actions better. đŸ˜© Overall, “Stay with Me” beautifully explores themes of love and longing, reminding us of its enduring power even in adversity. I highly recommend it for an unforgettable read. I’m still recovering from the ending! đŸ„ș💖 . . #StayWithMe #AyobamiAdebayo #bestbooks #LiteraryFiction #bookrec #fivestarread #greatreads #bookishgirl #whatimreading #diversereads #whatiread #africanbooks #bookwrapup #NigerianAuthors #BookishThoughts #AfricanLiterature #blackgirlreads #currentread #booksandplants #whattoreadnext #historicalfictionbooks #toberead #wellreadblackgirl #readingwrapup #blackbookstagram #bookreviewblog #kindlereads #WhatToRead #bookishcommunity #blackwomenread

✹BACK IN STOCK✹ 📌STAY WITH ME: Yejide and Akin have been married since they met and fell in love at university. Though many expected Akin to take several wives, he and Yejide have always agreed: polygamy is not for them. But four years into their marriage—after consulting fertility doctors and healers, trying strange teas and unlikely cures—Yejide is still not pregnant. She assumes she still has time—until her family arrives on her doorstep with a young woman they introduce as Akin’s second wife. Furious, shocked, and livid with jealousy, Yejide knows the only way to save her marriage is to get pregnant, which, finally, she does—but at a cost far greater than she could have dared to imagine. An electrifying novel of enormous emotional power, Stay With Me asks how much we can sacrifice for the sake of family.đŸ·ïžGHS140 📌A SPELL OF GOOD THINGS: Eniola is tall for his age, a boy who looks like a man. Because his father has lost his job, Eniola spends his days running errands for the local tailor, collecting newspapers, begging when he must, dreaming of a big future. Wuraola is a golden girl, the perfect child of a wealthy family. Now an exhausted young doctor in her first year of practice, she is beloved by Kunle, the volatile son of an ascendant politician. When a local politician takes an interest in Eniola and sudden violence shatters a family party, Wuraola and Eniola’s lives become intertwined. In her breathtaking second novel, Ayobami Adebayo shines her light on Nigeria, on the gaping divide between the haves and the have-nots, and the shared humanity that lives in between.đŸ·ïžGHS150 ✹DM/Call/WhatsApp or visit our website to shop✹ 🚚Fast & Reliable Nationwide Delivery📩 #staywithmebook #aspellofgoodthings #ouidabooks #africanfiction #bookstagrammers #literature #readersofinstagram #readings #bookaddict #booksonbooks #bookstababesx3 #readershubbookstore #accragh #booklovers #ayobamiadebayo #ınstabooks #shareall #likeallways #igexplorepage #books

✹ Review✹ “Stay With Me” by Ayobami Adebayo. I read this book 7 years ago and just revisited it. It had me so emotionally engaged, beautifully written & I cried. It’s about Yejide & Akin, a married couple heartbreakingly struggling to conceive. The relatives pushing towards polygamy, Yejide will go to great lengths to avoid another wife and her pressure to conceive becomes tortuous. Set in Nigeria during the 1980s, the societal, political, & cultural commentary is palpable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ . . . . . . #bookstagram #staywithme #staywithmeayobamiadebayo #ayobamiadebayo #heartbreakbook #marriagebooks #romancebooks #bookclub #bookclubofinstagram #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readmorebooks #readersgonnaread #readersofinstagram #readeveryday #bookclubpick

BOOK REVIEW📚 Hmmn! I'm almost scared to review this book. I know I have a lot to say but I also don't think I have enough words to convince anyone just how good this book is. Stay With Me follows the marriage of Yejide and Akin, their love, secrets and their painful journey to having children of their own. This book was heartbreaking in so many ways. It's a book I looked forward to reading so I believe I read every review that was ever written before reading for myself, I can say I was prepared for the heaviness that this book came with. It's a carefully thought out story. As someone who isn't big on having children, I really couldn't relate to all the lengths Yejide and Akin went to just to have kids but this book is written in a way that I could sympathise with them, their losses felt real to me, every heartbreaking twist in the story resonated deeply with me. It took me weeks to finish this book because I kept taking breaks in between. I've read a lot of heavy books this month(the likes of Tomorrow I become a woman and Ogadinma), I needed to give my headspace time to heal if that makes sense lol Overall this book is so well written! I really loved reading it. When I found out the story behind the title "Stay with me" and the dress on the cover, I almost cried lol. I really loved this book. I'm so happy I read it @ayobamidebayo is a well known name in the literary world and with this book I understand why. I absolutely recommend this book for everyone. I wasn't too satisfied with the ending but I think it's solely based on sentiments for me lol. This is a beautiful book. 4/5 🌟 PS: Got this copy from @bookpeddlerng #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #nigerianbooks #staywithme #ayobamiadebayo #africanbooks #nanbyenreads

Yejide and Akin have been married since they met and fell in love at university. An electrifying novel of enormous emotional power, Stay With Me asks how much we can sacrifice for the sake of family. Genre: African fiction Price: N5,500 only. Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo “If the burden is too much and stays too long, even love bends, cracks, comes close to breaking and sometimes does break. But even when it’s in a thousand pieces around your feet, that doesn’t mean it’s no longer love.” ⚠ check trigger warnings ⚠ I deeply resonated with Yejide, the FMC in this story. I know what it feels like to want a child so badly you would do anything just short of criminal to have a baby. My husband and I suffered through infertility for 4 years before our first son joined our family. We did 2 rounds of IVF and ended up with nothing. Our boys are donated embryos. I carried both of them but they are not our biological children. The grief and deep depression and the heartbreak of our difficult journey will always be with me. There’s so much more to our story so reach out if you want to know more about us. Stay With Me @ayobamidebayo “What would be left of love without truth stretched beyond its limits, without those better versions of ourselves that we present as the only ones that exist?” A story spanning from 1980-2008 set in Nigeria amongst the backdrop of socio-political unrest. We follow Yejide and Akin on their journey to try and become parents. Yejide faces pressure from everywhere to get pregnant and enter motherhood and is judged so highly for being unable to do this for Akin, resulting in everyone claiming she’s not enough because she’s not a mum. It all changes when Akins mother suggests he take in another wife to get the job done that Yejide can’t. We look at the extents people go to, to uphold familial and societal expectations. A tale of love, loss, longing and hope. Kicking off Good Friday with a book review! ✹ Stay With Me, Ayobami Adebayo Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Stay With Me tells the heartbreaking story of Yejide and Akin, who after 4 years of marriage are struggling to conceive after many interventions. Eventually, Akin is "forced" to take a second wife and this is where the story unfolds. What a beautiful, heartbreaking story. I adored this book and Yejide, who is such a strong, endearing character that was beautifully written. Her experiences are perfectly woven into her character, which felt so realistic. Though at times flawed, I was still rooting for Yejide and this ran true for a few of the characters. I loved getting insight into Nigerian culture and Nigeria's history - which shamefully I knew nothing about before reading this book. The political background contrasted against everyday life was done brilliantly, demonstrating how life does "go on" no matter what's going on. I'm so glad I picked this book up and it will (excuse the pun) stay with me for a while. It was an emotional rollercoaster, dealing with love, loss, grief, marriage and fertility struggles. I highly recommend picking this up!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) #alleswathadkunnenzijn #ayobamiadebayo #hebbanboekvandemaand #hebbanreadingchallenge #bookblogger #bookstagrammer #roman #nigeria #boekperweek #bibliotheek #indrukwekkend #familieverhoudingen #literatuur #uitgeverijsignatuur @ayobamidebayo @debibliotheek @biebzaanstreek

With Easter holidays right around the corner, I popped to my local #library yesterday to have a little mooch and came away with these beauties. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel a bit of pressure to be reading the latest release / a book that everyone is talking about / something that has been recommended. Yesterday I shook that off and went old school. I perused the shelves and picked up the books that sang to me - maybe that’s why most have orange in the spines (my favourite colour) 😂 I’m excited for this collection though. Are there any here you’ve read or that are on your list? I know I was lucky to snag Kairos and that’s one I’ve been keeping my eye out for. My lad breaks up today and I’ve got next week off too, so looking forward to some lovely walks and just chilling out with the family. Happy cusp-of-Easter-holidays to you all 🐣

BOOK REVIEW | Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo I tandem read the audiobook and ebook from my library (thank you Libby!) and I’m so glad I did it this way. The audiobook gave me a chance to know how to properly pronounce the characters names and the places in the books. The narrator was absolutely fantastic. The way they told the story was like you were listening to someone dramatically recount something they saw and it was such a treat to listen to the production. Stay With Me takes place in Nigeria and follows the marriage of Yjide and Akin and their journey through fertility and polygamy. Both Yjide and Akin agreed early on polygamy wasn’t for them, Yjide wanted to be the only wife and Akin only wanted Yjide since the moment they met. But Akin’s family gets pushy when after years of marriage, Yjide is still not pregnant. They force a second wife on Akin and thus starts the wild ride that Stay With Me was. Stay With Me was a very deep and dark story at times, so please check your TWs. But this story kept me guessing. Not once did I predict the twists and turns this book took. There was one thing that I semi-accurately predicted but even then I wasn’t 100% right. Women’s fiction is not usually something I gravitate towards, but this story was really good! It was a book I wasn’t expecting, I went in blind, but after a bit, I couldn’t stop reading. My one criticism is that I did feel the story ended abruptly. I did like the ending, but I was left with a feeling of “oh, it’s over?” QOTD | what’s a book that you couldn’t predict what would happen next? #staywithme #ayobamiadebayo #penguinrandomhouse #paperbackloveaffair #paperbackloveaffairreview #womensfiction #librarybooks #nigeriabooks #bipocbookstagram #readdiversebooks

Following two characters from very different walks of life, "A Spell of Good Things" is a social commentary on modern Nigeria. It's not a book to read if you want to feel the least bit happy, as it concerns unemployment, poverty, a failing educational system, corporal punishment, overwork, a struggling healthcare system, societal pressure to marry, domestic violence, and political corruption. Something it does really well is build each scene so that you fully understand the protagonists' decisions. But it's very much more a novel to appreciate than to enjoy. #ayobamiadebayo #aspellofgoodthings #bookerlonglist2023 #nigeriannovels #bookclub #marchread #dualnarrative #bookish #bibliophile #fiction
