💭Nabokov's Nostalgia💭 Nabokov was born in 1899 in the Russian Empire. His was one of the richest noble families in the empire. In 1918, after the October Revolution his family had to flee and he never returned to Russia. His family lost their material wealth and the next time Nabokov acquired enough wealth to be able to dedicate all his time to writing (i.e. to stop working) was after the success of Lolita in the late 1950s. In the meantime, the Nabokovs uprooted themselves and relocated several times. “The nostalgia I have been cherishing all these years is a hypertrophied sense of lost childhood, not sorrow for lost banknotes.” he writes in Speak, Memory. Indeed, Nabokov often expresses a longing for Russia, cherishes his first home country’s language and culture, and writes about childhood like nobody else. He clearly mourns and misses Russia. But I don’t recall ever reading anything from him in which he complained about losing material wealth and social status, which is very impressive since his family lost a great deal of both. Considering his private life, it seems like money, status, and the country he happened to live in had little to do with who he was and how he created his art. At least a lack of money and status and being an immigrant – all of which could have been obstacles impossible to overcome – did not seem to hinder him much. Nostalgia seems to me a key to his resilience. I’m always interested in the workings of human memory, but I’ve been reading about the roles of nostalgia also partly because it’s an emotion that’s very important to me. It’s a bottomless source of calmness and peace for me. I plan to write about it in connection with Ada (my current read) as well. But I’m also curious: Do you tend to indulge in nostalgia? If so, in what sense? Your own personal memories? Retro style? A historical (say Victorian) era from the past? What is the use of nostalgia for you?

ꜰɪɴᴀʟᴇ ʙʏ sᴛᴇᴘʜᴀɴɪᴇ ɢᴀʀʙᴇʀ 3/3 ★★★★★ “Fear was a poison that people mistook as protection.” I should’ve finished this book 3 days ago but I put off reading it for those 3 days because I didn’t want the world of caraval to end. I think this book is my favourite of the trilogy and the ending was perfect. I have loved every second of this book, I was very happy that it was split POVs with Scarlett and Tella, I feel we had a good balance between the sisters and their stories each revolving a lot around romance which I love! Scarlett who was determined to meet her former fiancé to see if there was anything that could’ve been or to confirm that Julian is the one. (Who could be better than Julian though?) Tella who daily has her heartbroken by legend who can’t love her the same way she loves him, and him genuinely being a bit of a jerk but who still can’t leave Tella alone. Invading her dreams so he can see her and ask her the most important question. However the just as charming Jacks is still about claiming Tella as his and leaving her confused with her feelings and who to trust. Of course there was still a whole storyline along the way with more betrayals, plot twists about a certain father and fates still roaming free and taking over which we can’t have can we? But this isn’t truly the end for the fantastic 4 is it? I’m so excited for Spectacular later this year and tomorrow I’m starting Once Upon a Broken Heart to get my Jacks fix! Definitely one of my favourite reads this year so far! 💐Book Review💐 This book was such a delight! I loved the magic system, the world building and the incorporation of music and poetry, which were significant elements within the story. The romance subplot was also beautifully done and was so refreshingly wholesome and healthy! I really craved to explore more of the romance, but this book’s focus was more on the fantasy elements, which I still really enjoyed. My favourite parts about this book were the beautiful writing and the relationship between the FMC and MMC. The Duke of Dreams lived up to his name because he is honestly the duke of MY dreams; he was such a respectful, charming and wholesome MC and I loved that about him because he truly just exemplified what it is to be a man in love and wanting to protect his girl. His character is also just really fascinating, and I do wish we had more moments with him and Xue. On the other hand, Xue was such a wonderful protagonist and I loved her from the very beginning. She’s headstrong, smart and has so much grace and depth. Her relationship with her uncle and the side characters she later meets were so touching to read about and I really sympathised with her struggles. Sadly it did lose a star due to missing words and extra words that were placed incorrectly. J’ai été surprise et transportée dans la faille temporelle créée par King ! En revanche, j’avoue avoir eu du mal à m’attacher aux personnages que j’ai trouvé assez incipides et niais par moment... l’histoire d’amour était si looooongue... 😮💨 Dans l’ensemble, c’est une bonne lecture avec ce qu’il faut d’historique et de descriptions cinématrographiques pour s’y croire ! I HAD THE BEST TIME EVER AT @yallwest!!!! This was my second year attending, and oh my gosh it was just as amazing as the first! I got to meet so many absolutely incredible people, get books signed, chat with some publishers, get some free books (a post of my haul coming soon!), and just be in an event full of THOUSANDS of people who love books! Truly there is no better place. I took almost no pictures bc I was so busy running from booth to booth and signing to signing. But I did get a good amount of footage for reels that I still need to edit and post! I’m still in California through Wednesday (I have a lot of family here that it has been SO nice to see), so I think things will probably go up in the latter half of the week, but aaaa it was amazing and I’m still riding the high. ✨Currently-still… ✨ I have learned that buddy reading dedicated chapters at a time just isn’t for me. I fly through the chapters before the discussion date for said dedicated chapters and then patiently wait for the day to come to discuss. But honestly, by time the discussion date rolls around I’ve either forgotten what has happened, OR so much time has passed since I picked up that book that I’ve started another and then I lose interest in the previous book. Does that make sense?😅 Either way- from now on I will just read through the entire book but take notes along the way so that way I can still participate in the discussions on the specific dates. The Guest - Emma Cline Initially uncertain due to its mixed reviews, I decided to dive into this book. And I am so glad that I did! I could not put it down. No matter what I was doing during the day, I wanted to continue reading to see how it would unfold. It held my attention, compelling me to return to it. The narrative’s transition from optimism to chaos is masterfully executed by Cline. From Alex’s questionable choices to her falsely optimistic views, the story delves into classism and the dynamics of wealth and ‘attractiveness’. Although the main character Alex was not exactly the most likable character, I somehow found myself rooting for her (aside from her questionable decisions). Alex is a drifter and a fighter but the compulsive deception, desperation and the means of trying to keep up a facade is what is ultimately her downfall. She is a hub of chaos. Her internal struggle between her desires and morality is not tangible, making her a captivating yet flawed character with a knack for self-sabotage. Her main focus is survival and she will do anything to anyone to do so. A car crash waiting to happen. Furthermore, the ending was insane. I found myself rushing to devour as much of the novel as possible to reach its conclusion... No spoilers though! At times I did wish it would move a little quicker, and perhaps some scenes could be cut without impacting the story, but it was an enjoyable read for me! 🙋♀️ I hear this one is fab on audio. This series - The Shepherd King- took me by surprise (I know, I know, but I don’t have booktok). A dark fantasy duology, these books are about… well, magic. But it’s more than that. The duology includes a little mystery, nature, romance… and maybe a touch of horror. I’ll be honest, I had to skim some of the more graphic parts. But it didn’t linger in those descriptions. It’s a fairytale. But the author did such a great job describing the side characters, that even when the second book focused on them, I was deeply engaged and cared about the outcome. It spans 500 years, utilizing multiple narrators, in various times and places. But I never was confused- rather, the variety just helped the pace. There is a lot of real world symbolism and the good/evil duality of various characters really shows how our choices matter. The world building is great- I read both books in less than a week.
