Went to a really interesting CPD recently. The Neuroscience of Emotions. There’s much more to solution focused hypnotherapy than many people realise. In the twenty first century we now know how & why hypnosis works so well. Our whole way of working is underpinned by current neuroscience study & research. It’s also fascinating. Who would have guessed that schoolgirl cringing about some of the biology lessons - cutting things up 🤦🏼‍♀️ - would have been so interested in neuroscience many years later. ❤️

This comment opens the door to questions. Diagnosing perimenopause? Diagnosing menopause in women between the ages of 40 -45 years. Is the use of antidepressants reasonable? 1. There is no test for perimenopause, the diagnosis is based upon irregular periods and symptoms (but some women experience symptoms before cycles change). Patterns of hormones change erratically at this time. For some women oestrogen rises around 5 years before the last period and steeply declines almost a year before their periods stop, for others there is a slow flat decline. FSH, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, levels vary wildly. Treatment, including HRT, hormone replacement therapy can be started in perimenopause. This time can last for 2-10 years, the time running up to menopause. 2. Diagnosing MENOPAUSE, yes an FSH blood test can be used, she is under the age of 45 and other causes for her symptoms could be excluded. Blood tests are reasonable. 3. She was given antidepressants, was this reasonable? This depends upon the result of her mental health assessment. So if this woman has been diagnosed with severe depression, then it will be reasonable to consider antidepressants, but importantly HRT and CBT, should be discussed if her mood changes are low mood or anxiety that arises as a result of the menopause. She may have a history of mental health problems. The treatment should be tailored to her and some women do need to have the support of antidepressants, with counselling about possible side effects including effect on libido. We cannot tell from her comment what the right treatment is right for her, but certainly HRT should be considered as she says she has lots of symptoms. When you get an overwhelming sense of sadness, feeling like you're running on fumes even though the sun is shining, nature is looking gorgeous and you have people around you... the pressure, negativity and stress of daily living just seems to be getting too much and the composure you've been working so hard to maintain for those around you just seems to be collapsing like a house of cards.. Acknowledge this, allow it to happen. This is human and not something to fight.... allow it to be, experience it.... and then make the decision to give that feeling back to the universe, with love and gratitude. Now shift your focus on to the area of your heart. Take some deep, even breaths in and out pretending you are brrathing in and out through your heart. Think of a person, a place, a beloved pet or situation that makes you feel good, calm or appreciative. Stay in this place and feel how good it does you. Allow this feeling to 'refill your cup'. So after finding out I was perimenopausal it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders and that there were things that I could start to help me. I was put on progesterone tablets, oestrogen patches (50) and also testosterone gel (that stuff is magic).
