En er is zelfs een glijbaan aanwezig in de boekenwinkel. Als Callie een bijzonder boek ontdekt besluit ze verder op onderzoek uit te gaan want waarom zijn er extra regels aan het boek toegevoegd? Wie heeft dit gedaan? Callie houdt er van om bijzondere vondsten en hun eigenaren te herenigen. Verleden - Het is het jaar 1938 en Hitler komt steeds meer aan de macht in Duitsland. De Joden mogen steeds minder. Max is verliefd op Luzia, een Joodse vrouw. Als haar vader, een Joodse arts vraagt om spullen te verbergen voor hem en zijn patiënten aarzelt Max geen moment om te helpen. Steeds kleine hoeveelheden verplaats hij naar het zomerverblijf van zijn familie in Hallstatt. Als Annika, de jeugdvriendin van Max, dit te weten komt neemt hij haar in vertrouwen. Als er een geheim uitkomt vlucht hij samen met Luzia naar het zomerverblijf in Hallstatt. Het wordt zelfs zo moeilijk om te schuilen als de Duitsers ze op de hielen zit. Lukt het hun om uit de handen van de Duitsers te blijven? Melanie Dobson heeft weer een prachtige dualtime roman geschreven. Zelfs af en toe op het spannende af waardoor ik het boek in no-time uit had. Het verhaal switcht tussen heden en verleden, ondanks deze wissel wordt je niet in verwarring gebracht. Thema's zoals moed, vertrouwen en liefde vallen precies op zijn plaatst. Alle personages zijn mooi beschreven en je leert ze ook echt kennen. Het was jammer toen het verhaal afgelopen was, ik had echt nog wel meer willen lezen! Kortom een prachtige historische dualtime roman die echt de moeite waard is om te lezen!

Seine letzte Chance ist Quency, eine junge Journalistin mit Empathie und Weitblick, die in ihrer Vergangenheit selbst Verluste ertragen musste. Kann sie das schaffen, wodran so viele vor ihr gescheitert sind? Ein Roman voller Hoffnung, auch wenn (oder gerade weil) die Protagonisten so viel Schweres erlebt haben. Melanie Dobson hat mich vor Jahren schon mit #erinnerungenausglas gefesselt, ihr neuer Roman steckt wieder voller Gefühle und auch so einigen Überraschungen, so dass ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen mochte. Durch die immer wieder sich auch abwechselnden Zeitebenen wurde die Spannung weiter aufgebaut. Der Roman hat Tiefgang und ist Vielschichtig, bietet neben den Themen Flucht und Vertreibung, Verrat und Verlust, Hoffnung und Mut, auch Raum für eine kleine Liebesgeschichte. Melanie Dobson heeft al meerdere romans over de tweede Wereldoorlog op haar naam staan. Haar romans zijn meestal dualtime romans, waarbij het deel over de oorlog een redelijk onbekend stuk geschiedenis is. Haar nieuwste roman ‘de vrouwen van het zwanenkasteel’ is ook een dualtime roman over de tweede wereldoorlog. In het heden gaat het over boekverkoopster Callie, zij vindt in een oudkinderboek een cryptische lijst wat haar op het spoor zet van Annika. In de oorlog volgen we meerdere mensen rondom het zwanenkasteel, die ieder een andere bijdrage hebben aan de oorlog en hier anders mee omgaan. Een prachtige, indringende roman met een mysterie wat pas op het laatst onthuld wordt. Ik geef het boek 4 sterren. Das Bild wirkt sehr vertrauensvoll, friedlich aber auch ein Stück melancholisch. Und nachdem man diese Geschichte gelesen hat, verbirgt die Covergestaltung noch soviel mehr, von Traurigkeit bishin zu Glück & Freude. Meine Meinung: In "Ich verspreche dich zu finden" von Melanie Dobson fand ich eine stark verwobene Geschichte, die zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs spielend vor, die mich anfangs ein klein wenig an meine Grenzen brachte. In der Vergangenheit lernte ich die Kinder Dietmar und Brigitte kennen, wie sie in ihrem Baumhaus in Deutschland in ihrer Fantasiewelt Ritter und Prinzessin spielten. Das friedliche Zusammenspiel wird unterbrochen, als sie miterleben, wie Dietmars Eltern und Brigittes Vater verhaftet werden. Beide fliehen über Belgien nach England und werden dort getrennt - mit dem Versprechen von Dietmar: Ich werde dich finden! Gegenwärtig ist die Journalistin Quenby in ihren Recherchen vertieft, in dem es um Spionage im 2. Weltkrieges geht, als sie einen Anruf des Anwaltes Lukas erhält, der sie bittet für seinen amerikanischen Mandanten Daniel Knight eine Freundin aus vergangener Zeit wiederzufinden. Mitten in den Recherchen zu einem brisanten Spionagefall während des 2.Weltkriegs übernimmt sie diesen Fall, der sich aber schon bald als bislang größte Herausforderung abzeichnet und Verbindungen an die Oberfläche bringt, mit denen keiner gerechnet hat. Ich hab schon viele Romane aus dieser Epoche gelesen, aber dieser hier hat nochmal eine ganz andere Note, die mich auf positive Weise herausgefordert hat. Denn sobald man in diese Geschichte eintaucht, hat man das Gefühl, in einem Netz voller Verwirrungen und Verstrickungen zu hängen, die schwer zu lösen sind. Book 4 of 2024. A breath of fresh air. A moving, fluid, gentle story of love, separation, searching, redemption, God’s love, and peace. A quick read but one that suited my current mood and state of health at the beginning of the year. I’m glad I pulled this off the TBR pile. Not only has that grown to 6 stacks of 15 books deep (possibly. Probably. Most likely. Could be more.) but not spending my precious gift cards from Christmas was so nice for a change. I’ve been waiting at least a year to read this book. It was so good! There were so many unexpected plot twists that kept me guessing till the end. Poppy Pendleton disappeared at the age of 5 in 1907. Years later, a girl who still lives on the island comes across her own missing girl as she reluctantly helps discover what happened to Poppy. This story was told through several different viewpoints, but it was necessary to be able to figure out everything that happened. The chain of events starts with the disappearance of Poppy but as the pieces to the puzzle reveal themselves a detailed and expertly written tale unfolds. A lot of thought went into this book and it shows by the complexity that intertwines these characters and their journey to the truth. I enjoyed following the clues and piecing them together. There’s a faith based foundation of new beginnings and healing told along with mystery and romance. Well written and intriguing the author writes a unique book full of twists and a satisfying conclusion. @melbdobson
BOOK REVIEW - The Wings of Poppy Pendleton - @melbdobson - 5/5 Stars THE STORY & ROMANCE Wow. This story was just wow. I've always been a fan of Melanie Dobson but this story is my new favourite of hers. Every aspect of the story was fantastic. The mystery was so well done I couldn't figure it out, I had to discover the answers along with the characters. I love dual timelines and I learnt so much historical fun facts that I didn't know before.The characters were beautifully broken but fully redeemed and full of hope. I always feel like there can be more tomance in a story but what was in there was slow and sweet with a surprising additional romance I didn't see coming but was heartily onboard for! While the book touched on a lot of sadness and hard topics, it didn't feel depressing, it felt hopeful with bright moments of joy. It all worked so well together, I read it over two sittings! And that, to me, is the hallmark of a good book! THE TRUTHS Theses verses were going through my mind the whole time I was reading this book, so thought I'd share them instead of my thoughts as to me they really encapsulate the spirit of this story. In "Catching the Wind," Quenby is an American Journalist with a tenacity for finding people. Daniel Knight, a wealthy older man, wants to locate Brigitte, his childhood friend. He promised Brigitte that he'd find her when they had to separate for their protection. At the time, Brigetta was just ten, and Daniel was thirteen. Because he knows of Quenby's tenacity in finding people, he hires her to help locate Brigitte. The story is set in both modern-day and during WWII. I've read another book by Melody Carlson, and I really enjoy her writing style. Her books captivate me and usually make me cry (which honestly isn't that hard). I thought the Wings of Poppy Pendleton looked and sounded intriguing and it lived up to my expectations. This is a great dual time story with enough complexity that you can start to get bits of the mystery figured out but not see the whole picture yet so it was a satisfying read from beginning to end. There are historical events from the early 1900's woven in and I appreciate the authors afterward that shares the real-life events that influenced her story’s events. The modern-day story line is set in 1992 but I didn't get a real sense of the culture or time and would have liked a little bit of that -- this part of the story felt more generic compared to the earlier time that is described with some atmospheric detail. This is the second of the author’s novels that I’ve read and I plan to read her backlist and watch for upcoming releases. I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. What I found so brilliant about Melanie Dobson’s writing was how the stories were stitched together to create a gripping tale that spans a century that gave such amazing historical details about Thousand Island in New York, along with fun to read characters, and unexpected twists and turns of events. Whew! Do you tend toward heavier or lighter reads? I am usually on the more serious end of the spectrum in my reading, but I have been enjoying sprinkling light reads in between. #TheWinterRose is definitely on the heavy side. At times the story was just so sad, but the pay-off at the end was far beyond what I hoped for. The Winter Rose has given me new appreciation for stories that show almost an entire arc of a character's life, from childhood trauma to turbulent adolescence to the struggle to make a change and the ultimate redemption. Wow. I also love how the author really took the time to unpack the goodness at the end of the book. It wasn't rushed at all. The pacing felt just right, and oh so satisying. I am still filled up to the brim with awe for two things: 1) For how #MelanieDobson wrote this incredible story, redeeming the toughest parts of a family's history with perfect grace 2) The knowledge that God, the Author of life itself, can do this over and over in each of our lives. We're all at different stages in our lives and we can't see the ending. But there is always hope that God will redeem whatever has been lost in His perfect timing. Gisteravond uitgelezen… prachtig verhaal, spelend in twee tijdlijnen. Over hoe joodse kinderen in Frankrijk geholpen worden te vluchten naar Spanje en over de gevolgen van een oorlog en vluchten daarvoor, op de rest van je leven. Over kracht, moed, pijn, overleven, verdriet, liefde en hoe het voor sommigen bijna onmogelijk is los te laten. Nadeel van het boek is iets wat mij bij de aanschaf totaal ontgaan is. Ik dacht dat ik de meeste boeken van Melanie Dobson al had gelezen, maar kwam erachter dat er twee zijn die ik nog niet kende. Een van die twee ken ik inmiddels wel, ‘het geheim van Chateau d’Epines’ wat een prachtig boek weer! Zoals we gewend zijn van Melanie heeft het boek twee hoofdpersonen, 1 in de Tweede Wereldoorlog en 1 in het heden. Gisele is de hoofdpersoon in de tweede Wereldoorlog, zij woont in het Chateau, waar in de tunnels haar broer en andere verzetsstrijders wonen en de Duitsers bij haar in het Chateau zijn getrokken. In het heden gaat het over Chloe, zij onderzoekt met een documentaire maker wat er is gebeurt in de oorlog. Het plot hiervan (wat er is gebeurt tijdens de oorlog) vond ik erg verrassend. Doordat het boek wisselt tussen de hoofdpersonen en ik van beide wilde weten hoe het verder ging, is het boek moeilijk weg te leggen. Soms werd er wel erg snel gewisseld tussen heden en verleden en kostte het moeite om het goed te volgen. Al met al geef ik het boek 4 sterren. I haven’t been reading much on our family trip out West, but the few moments I have had free, this delightful book has been my book of choice. I started Melanie Dobson’s “The Wings of Poppy Pendleton” when we had our flight fiasco (cancellation) and had to stay in a hotel before we flew out the next day.
