Do You Need Carbs During Your Workout? We hope you know by now that carbs are not the enemy. Research suggests that carbs support muscle growth and performance. But does the timing of your carbs offer any additional benefits? A new study suggests that consuming carbs during your workout does not improve overall performance. Before we get into what the study found, let’s not get it twisted. This is not to say that pre-workout carbs can’t help performance. Or that you can’t have carbs during your workout. Or that removing carbs around a workout might not support fat loss. This was about whether drinking carbs during a workout helps you push harder. So, are sports beverages all BS? Not exactly. Most of the research on carb-based drinks was linked to longer-lasting endurance exercise. This is because your glycogen — a primary energy system for exercise — can last about 90 minutes. So, for longer workouts (think around 2 hours), consuming carbs can help support better exercise output. #trojanpride ✌️ Some fun facts about me👇 🚴 I learned how to ride a bike in 2021 🏊 I learned how to swim shortly after 🏃🏾‍♂️ I ran my first half marathon in 2022 🏃🏾‍♂️I ran 10 10k races in 2023 🏃🏾‍♂️I ran my second half marathon in 2023 (and cut 30 MINUTES off my time 😱) 🫃🏾I transformed my body and lost 70lbs throughout this training period. And that’s a wrap!! 🎁 I am always privileged to have the ability to be around our members in any capacity at @otspersonaltraining. The #sfwchallenge provides an opportunity for this to happen in a competitive light. This year was extra special because the level of inspiration was on another level 📈 A few things were learned this year: 1️⃣ I feel much more secure in life because now I know that in the event there is a dangerous situation and I need it, @jamilajolie can basically lift my body at least five times and get me to safety 🤷🏾 2️⃣ However in the event that my life was on the line and I needed ANY of the participants to wall sit to rescue me…I am as good as dead 😂 3️⃣ I saved the competitors from a rabid reptile and only one person noticed 🤫 4️⃣ @legourmandbakery makes a 🔥 chocolate chip cookie and it took me three attempts to confirm it 🤣 5️⃣ No one knows a DAMN THING about OTS history, and I will be giving out FREE lessons beginning tomorrow in preparation for next year 👨🏾‍🏫 Fantastic experiences are always made better with fantastic people. How much time should you rest between sets? ❗️New research found that your rest periods depend on the number of reps you perform and exercise selection, but — most importantly — it’s influenced by how close you train to failure. 🤔The old adage was that you need shorter rest to build muscle and longer rest to build strength. But that’s a bit misleading. The new study found that both goals benefit from taking longer rests. ✅️Strength and muscle depend on the relationship between fatigue and intensity. So, if you push maximum intensity (nearing failure), you can maximize results. But that comes at the cost of higher fatigue and needing more rest. If you try to push your intensity and don’t give enough time to recover, then you’re leaving results on the table. ▶️Longer rest periods don’t work for everyone because your schedule might limit your total workout time. If that’s the case, you can still see great results with shorter rest, but you must adjust your workout style. With less rest, you need to be mindful not to push towards failure on each set, and you’ll need to perform more sets and reps to offset not pushing each set to the limit. So, when using shorter rest, adding more sets or reps can help offset your limited recovery time. ❗️In general, the research suggests that 3 to 5 minutes is the ideal amount of rest for multi-joint exercises (think squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows), as well as exercises where you’re using heavier weights (more than 80% of your 1RM ). Drinking alcohol 🥂can disrupt your sleep, but when you drink matters. Research shows that even just a few drinks can affect sleep quality and REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep, with the first night of drinking having the most significant impact. Timing is key – the earlier you drink, the less likely it is to disrupt your sleep. ➡️Also ! Keep in mind Alcohol can interfere with muscle building in several ways. It can decrease protein synthesis, impair recovery by disrupting sleep patterns ^, and decrease testosterone levels, which are important for muscle growth. 5 ways to optimize your workouts 1. Use free weights as opposed to fixed weights and machines. 2. Do a superset or a circuit of 2 or more exercises with no to minimal rest between them. 3. Set a timer for your rest period and stick to it (1-3 minutes average) 4. Train intentionally and be fully connected to the movements you are doing. 5. Replacing one egg with half a cup of egg whites will add 7 grams of protein to your meal. Protein enriched milks can offer between 24 and 36 grams of protein per 500 ml. This is on par with most protein shakes these days. Seasoning your greek yogurt with some dill, garlic and salt will make replacing your mayo with it a much more tasty experience. 🔵 STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🔵 For this week’s spotlight we have LORI! 🌟 Lori has been at Pure since the beginning- a true OG! She has been teaching fitness classes, personal training and managing group fitness for many years in downtown Toronto. She moved here from Sudbury -up in the snowy north- to go to U of T to top up her undergrad in nursing with a MSc in nursing and then got her PhD in exercise physiology which is her true love! (As you can tell she loves learning!) ☺️ After these many years of academics and doing research, Lori decided that she wanted to practice what she has learnt and work solely in fitness helping people become strong and healthy using science and scientific principles to guide programming. As many of you know by doing Lori’s classes, she is energetic and motivating and makes you realize “You are stronger than you think you are!” When you are in her presence she makes you realize that you can accomplish way more than you thought you could. Her most popular mantras are “In order to achieve you must first believe!” And “We are stronger together than we are alone!” These types of messages really demonstrate her belief in the power of group fitness and she has definitely found her happy place as the coordinator for our group class schedule here at Pure Fitness! After a couple of crazy accidents and injuries over this past winter, Lori is back to teaching her classes and stirring up the energy in the group studios. 🏋🏼‍♀️ Welcome back Lori! Let’s move it! The COUNTDOWN workout consists of two exercises that you perform back-to-back, resting as little as possible. The goal is to focus on good reps on every set. Use the chart below to adjust the workout to your skill level. How 🤔 Set a timer to see how quickly you can complete this workout. Perform the starting number of reps of pushups (use the chart below to customize your experience level, as beginners will do a different number of reps than advanced). Then, perform the starting number of reps of lunges (again, use the chart below to determine how many reps you should perform). After you complete your lunges, return to pushups and do one fewer rep than your first set. (Example: if you did 10 reps on the first set, you’ll do 9 reps on the second set.) Then, do another round of lunges and do one fewer rep than your first set. (Just like pushups, if you started with 10, then you’ll do 9.) Continue alternating exercising and descending by one rep until you only perform only one rep of each exercise. An example: 15 pushups + 15 lunges on each leg 14 pushups + 14 lunges on each leg 13 pushups + 13 lunges on each leg And continue dropping by 1 rep each round. By the time you complete the final rep of pushups and lunges, you’ll have performed 120 pushups and 120 lunges if you do the advanced version. Ella es mami de 2 niños, entre foto y foto hay mucho esfuerzo e inversión, y esos procesos (tiempo) SON DIFERENTES PARA TODAS. Si, requieres tiempo. Pero como aprovechas ese tiempo es lo que realmente importa . La recomposición corporal, es mucho mas que solo bajar de peso, estar flaca, o subir músculo y grasa, es que tu cuerpo se vea en una armonía y simetría, aun EN EL PROCESO DE AUMENTO DE MASA CORPORAL.
