What does the word ā€œboundariesā€ mean to you? Is it a line on a map that separates fields or towns? Or is it something that you think of in relation to human relationships? There are three types of personal boundaries: šŸš« First is the ability to say ā€œNo.ā€ Some of us are such people-pleasers that we agree to things even when we know that we donā€™t have the time, the energy or the skills needed. And yet saying ā€œNoā€ is vital to good mental and physical health. A weak ā€œNoā€ can result in fatigue and chronic illness or poor mental health. This is something I saw a lot of when I worked as an osteopath treating patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. šŸš« The second type of weak boundaries is difficulty in asking for the things we need. I know I had tremendous trouble with this in the past, but it all changed when I started to understand personal boundaries. We all have a right to get our needs met ā€“ though we canā€™t expect any one person to meet all of our needs. šŸš« The third boundary problem is when we have difficulty regulating or managing our emotions. This is what the couples therapist Terry Real describes as being boundaryless. When we are unable to regulate our emotions we tend either to bottle them up or to let them out without any limits. And this is not a pleasant experience for the person on the receiving end! Where are you with boundaries? If you want to explore this further, hereā€™s a tip to get you started: šŸ“ Sit down with a blank piece of paper and write down everything you need. Include everything you can think of from food and water to love and fun. The list may well be enough to fill the paper. āœļø Now write down everything you have not said ā€œNoā€ to that has got in the way of you getting your needs met. Finally have a think ā€“ how often do you give your partner or a friend the unexpurgated version of what youā€™re feeling? Are you so boundaryless that you canā€™t hold anything in? Maybe this is a good time to examine your boundaries, with it being New Year. What would you like to change in the coming months? To explore your boundaries further download my workbook: https://www.sorrelpindar.co.uk/the-boundaries-workbook #boundaries #sayingNo #Needs

Saying ā€˜YESā€™ all the time and to anything and everything does not necessarily make you a good, easygoing or nice person.Ā  You will only end up overwhelming yourself, especially when you take up more than you can handle just to please others.Ā  Moreso, people would end up seeing you as a pushover and thus take advantage of you every chance they get. This is why it is important to know when and how to say ā€˜NOā€™. And mind you, saying ā€˜NOā€™ when necessary, doesn't make you a bad, rude or arrogant person.Ā Ā  In fact, when you know when and how to say ā€˜NO', people will see you as a confident person and not some pushover who tries too hard to be lovable. ā€˜NO' is a very powerful word. It helps to set boundaries.Ā  Now, some people are good at saying no but some struggle with this word. However,Ā  whether you are good at saying no or you struggle, you need to understand that this is a necessary word you need to know how to use and when to use. WHEN TO SAY NO You should say ā€˜NO' when: 1. You're already overwhelmed or busy. 2. The request doesn't align with your priorities or values. 3. It would compromise your well-being or goals. 4. You simply don't want to do it. (Picture from Liane Davey)Ā  #sayingno #sayingnoisokay #trending

Listennnn, saying "no" used to be a struggle for your girl, like for real! When I did say it, I would give this long-winded explanation as to why I couldn't do it (some things do deserve an explanation, but not all). I used to take on so much that I didn't know which way I was going. It got to the point where I was TIRED - burnt out, EMP-TY! ā€¢ Here's the thing, I thought I could handle it, all of it, but that was a lie! I was no good for anybody - not myself, my family, my friends, or the job(s). I was depleted. Irritated beyond my understanding and just done pouring from an empty cup. It was time to be less selfless and more selfish with taking care of me. ā€¢ I came to realize that I would say, "YES!" (loud and proud, too) to everyone because I didn't want to let people down. I didn't want to feel like a failure by not being able to take on every task, opportunity, or event requested of me. In reality, though, I was weak and too busy people-pleasing, that I failed to put myself FIRST. ā€¢ Oh, but now, nah. I refuse to be that person at this point in my life. I wasted a lot of time saying "yes" to do the things that I did not want to do. Only to end up feeling overwhelmed, irritated, resentful, and fatigued. Sometimes, I have a lot on my plate, and other times, I just don't want to. I need space to do me, whatever that is. ā€¢ Listen, y'all, take care of you first. Setting boundaries will teach people how to respect you and how to handle you with care. Otherwise, they will use you up for their benefit until the last drop. We are not doing that anymore! If anything, we're reclaiming our time. ā€¢ Growing In Grace Conference ā€” November 2024. More details coming soon. I put my tasks into four buckets: šŸ‘‡ Do First: These are non-negotiable or urgent (working out, family time, and important calls and work projects). šŸ‘‡ Schedule: I put important tasks in my calendar and tackle them by the end of day (key communications, upcoming deadline work). šŸ‘‡ Delegate: I hand off less important tasks (low-priority calls and email), or carve out time during low-energy periods of the day. šŸ‘‡ Donā€™t Do: Learn to say ā€˜noā€™ to low-priority tasks. When opportunities present themselves they are so tempting to just say yes. However, I believe you must be careful to accept those opportunities that further your vision. Declining an offer that does not align with your goals and strengths could be the best thing that you do for your career. Why? Saying no to the wrong ones creates space for better opportunities to present themselves - ones you should accept. Prioritize and make strategic decisions when it comes to accepting opportunities that come your way. It takes courage to say no, but in doing so, we make room to say yes to the opportunities that are meant for us. Thoughts and tips on Boundaries! How many times have you said ā€œnoā€ or stated a need or set a boundary of any kind , only to feel bad or somehow allow yourself to get talked right out of set boundary? šŸ™‹šŸ½ anyone? The thing is, the moment you begin to set boundaries, itā€™s a shift, a huge change for those closest to you. People in your professional and personal life will not understand and will definitely not ā€œbelieveā€ you at first. Every time we go back on a boundary, cave... we teach others that we also donā€™t believe our boundary is valid or needed. This is usually simply trained behavior, not malicious. Itā€™s important not to take it personal when our boundary isnā€™t honored at first, after all we have trained others in how we want to be treated. The follow through is the most important part of boundary setting. Setting the boundary is hard no question, especially if itā€™s new for you, but keeping it in place is where the changes occur! Some tips to boundaries: -state what you are available for or will do. - donā€™t take other parties reaction personally, thatā€™s their business. - state needs with kindness. - ask questions regarding possible other options to solve problem. - restate your ā€œnoā€ and /or what you can do if negotiations begin. Boundaries are important for your relationship with yourself and with others. Practice makes it easier, but understand that if you are a ā€œyes personā€, saying ā€œnoā€ is not ever going to feel great, stop expecting that. You feeling guilty or bad over saying ā€œNoā€ is an indication that this likely needs to happen more. If someone in your life is now setting boundaries, no need to take it personal; what an amazing growth step for them. #coachingbykel #boundaries #healthyrelationships #sayingno

When teaching kids about assertiveness, it is important to Discuss how there are boundaries in the world, or lines that should not be crossed. These exist on a physical level, like stop signs or even ā€œpersonal bubblesā€ (the space around our bodies) as well as emotional boundaries (things that hurt our feelings). One way to respect these boundaries is by discussing the power of ā€œno.ā€ Whether itā€™s an unwanted hug from grandma or a bossy friend on the playground, kids need to hear that assertively saying no is not only acceptable--itā€™s their right. Narcissists have a false self. Theyā€™re master illusionists. They behave like a little king or queen ā€” whether bragging or sulking. Their whole personality is a charade crafted to deceive you into believing they are confident, superior, self-sufficient, likable, and caring. Their personality is designed to impress and compensate for their hidden shame, exposed when their grandiosity doesnā€™t match reality. Most of the time, they will alter their perception of reality to protect their false self. An air of self-confidence and superiority inflates narcissistsā€™ opinion of themselves, which shields them against unconscious feelings of inadequacy. It also shifts shame by projecting inferiority onto others. They distort, rationalize, twist facts, and delude themselves to avoid anything that may cause a chink in their armor. #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #anxiety #gaslight #narcissm #narcissist #healing #childhoodtrauma #traumaresponse #loveyourself #appreciateyou #youmatter #trauma #settingboundaries #peoplepleaser #sayingno #overwhelmed SEO: How to implement mental health strategies when suffering from anxiety, depression, and low mood symptoms. How is it that one little word can have so much IMPACT on your life and the way you view it and yourself?? šŸ“£The truth about people pleasing and how to break freeā  ā  Whatā€™s so bad about being kind and making others happy? Donā€™t we all want to be like this?ā  ā  Thatā€™s what I used to think before I burnt out. Then I understood itā€™s not healthy, especially in the long-run. ā  ā  Where does this come from?ā  ā  People pleasing isnā€™t just about making others happy. It comes from old beliefs that were placed on girls and women. Society expected us to be kind and agreeable ā€“ even when we donā€™t really want to. ā  ā  In conversations with my clients, this is something that comes up ALL THE TIME. ā  ā  So how can we break free from people pleasing?ā  ā  āœØļø Explore your thoughts, beliefs and emotions in typical situationsā  ā  āœØļø Identify a pattern or limiting beliefsā  ā  āœØļø How can you rewrite the stories you tell yourself?ā  ā  Once youā€™ve identified where and when you want to stop people pleasing, start small and take the first step. Set clear boundaries (to others and especially to yourself) And check your emotions (itā€™s ok to feel uncomfortable at first, thatā€™s when growth happens)ā  ā  Have you noticed where your people pleaser turn up most? Is it with family or at work? Maybe with taking on tasks you donā€™t want to do? If not, donā€™t hesitate to respectfully decline. Your future self will thank you for it. šŸ˜‰ How do you navigate saying no gracefully? Let the sunshine into your soul. While traveling, we spent 2 winters in the south. It was heaven. After this past winter in the midwest, I learned that I do best with lots of warm, sunny days in my life. I almost never left our cozy, little condo. To be honest, I think I only went outside once during January. I was done traveling all the time. Yes, I loved seeing new places. But how many of us have been exhausted after vacation? It was mostly a 2 year vacation and I was tired and homesick. So, I entered a season of rest. One of the best things the past few years has given me is permission to take time. It is ok to say no to things you are not interested in anymore. It is ok to say no to being busy all the time. It is ok to do you. So for now, I am in a season of quiet. And it is so good. #slowliving #slowingdown #livingquietly #lessbusy #sayingno #beyou #beauthentic

Talking too much is a poor habit that, when developed, consumes nearly all of the time intended for productive activities. Too much-talking results in less listening and more talking. In order to learn more from what others have to offer, successful people tend to speak less and listen more. #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #anxiety #gaslight #narcissm #narcissist #healing #childhoodtrauma #traumaresponse #loveyourself #appreciateyou #youmatter #trauma #settingboundaries #peoplepleaser #sayingno #overwhelmed SEO: How to implement mental health strategies when suffering from anxiety, depression, and low mood symptoms. Ready to say no? In a world filled with endless demands and distractions, learning to say no is a powerful act of self-care and empowerment. Saying no isn't about being selfish or uncooperativeā€”it's about setting boundaries, preserving your time and energy, and prioritising what truly matters to you. Here's why saying no is essential: 1 Protects Your Time: Every time you say yes to something, you're also saying no to something else. By saying no to tasks, commitments, or opportunities that don't align with your goals or values, you free up time for the things that truly matter to you. 2 Preserves Your Energy: Your energy is finite, and spreading yourself too thin can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Saying no allows you to conserve your energy for the activities and relationships that bring you joy and fulfillment. 3 Maintains Boundaries: Saying no is a powerful way to establish and maintain healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life. It communicates your limits and reinforces respect for your time, space, and needs. 4 Fosters Authenticity: When you say yes out of obligation or fear of disappointing others, you compromise your authenticity and integrity. Saying no with honesty and clarity allows you to stay true to yourself and honour your values. 5 Promotes Self-Care: Saying no is an act of self-care that prioritises your well-being and mental health. It's okay to prioritise your needs and say no to things that drain your resources or cause undue stress. Remember, saying no is not a rejectionā€”it's a conscious choice to honour yourself and your priorities. Embrace the power of saying no, and watch how it transforms your life for the better. šŸ™Œ #SayingNo #SelfCare #Boundaries #mhpp #mariohalouvas #productivity #timewhisperer #technologytraining #performance #outlook #microsoft #aitraining
