The original Jack-O-Lantern story comes from Ireland which is a far cry from the cute, friendly, grinning pumpkins that we know today. They were initially carved from turnips and beets, intended to ward off unwanted visitors. As the tale goes, a man called Stingy Jack invited the Devil for a drink and convinced him to shape-shift into a coin to pay with. When the Devil obliged, Jack decided to put the coin in his pocket alongside a silver cross to prevent it from turning back into the Devil. Jack eventually freed the Devil under the condition that he wouldn't bother him for a year and wouldn't claim Jack's soul once he died. The next year, Jack tricked the Devil once more by convincing him to climb a tree to pick a fruit. When he was up in the tree, Jack carved a cross into the trunk so the Devil couldn't come down until he swore he wouldn't take Stingy Jack for another 10 years. When Jack eventually died, God wouldn't allow his scheming soul into heaven and the Devil refused him entry into hell. He was instead sentenced to roam the earth with a burning coal inside a carved out turnip to light his way. A recent read by @shrutisinghal.ss : With major Forrest Gump and The Man From Earth feels, this was an unputdownable and most enjoyable read. The odds of a simple Swedish boy going on to be involved in the major events of the 20th century are incredible, but the narrative makes you want to believe that it's very easily possible. I loved the titular character, Allan, and his idea that most conflicts can be resolved if the warring parties just talk their truths over a drink (or a few). Our first read of 2021 was A Man Called Ove. Suggested by @raconteur_27, this endearing novel by Fredrik Backman (@backmansk), set in Sweden, narrates the story of a grumpy 59-year-old curmudgeon whose quiet world turns topsy-turvy when an ebullient family moves next door. While we agree that Ove does initially come across as a bitter old man who dislikes humans and cats alike, refuses to part with his principles, sticks to his strict routines, and has an ill temper, as the story unfolds, he grows on you in a way that is difficult to explain. You realise that beneath the cranky exterior is a heart that is literally too big and encompasses love that brings chalk and cheese characters together. This hilarious and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unlikely friendships, loss, acceptance and a heart-wrenching yet beautiful love story, left us laughing uproariously and bawling our eyes out, all at once.
