Before I answer the question, first let's cover what 'vegan' is verus vegetarian. Vegan is defined as not eating any animal products at all. This includes all meat and fish products, dairy, eggs and even honey (because its made by bees). Vegetarian traditionally means not eating meat products. However, there are a lot of levels of vegetarianism. There is lacto-ovo vegetarians, which means they will eat dairy and eggs, but no meat, then there is pescatarian, which means they will only eat fish etc. etc. If someone you know identifies as a vegetarian, it is best to ask them what they include and do not include in their eating plan. Now, to answer the question. No, you do not have to be vegan to be healthy. There are lots of ways to be healthy. Consistent research has found that a diet rich in plants, including veggies, fruits, beans, and nuts, significantly lowers your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and several cancers. However, many people don't choose these foods on a regular basis. So, what to do? Include fruits and veggies at every meal and/or snack that you can. Seed oils have been getting a bad rap the last few years. Well, here's the lowdown. Seed oils are oils made from a variety of seeds. These seeds go through a bleaching, refining and heating process to be used in our foods. The seed oils most often referred to as 'bad' are: canola, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, soybean, sunflower, safflower, rice bran and peanut oil. These oils are a type of fat. We consume fat from a variety of sources and there are healthy and unhealthy fats. These oils in particular have a high amount of omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are essential to our diet and they play a critical role in inflammation and our immune response. The problem comes in when we have an imbalance of fats in our diet. Omega-6 fats should be consumed in moderation and eaten along with omega-3 fatty acids in a healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and are essential for overall health because of their role in improving heart health, supporting mental health and fighting inflammation. The current Western diet is really heavy on foods made with omega-6 fats. Hence we have an imbalance of omega-6 and omega-3 consumption and a pro-inflammatory diet. Omega-6 fats, in addition to the oils listed above, is the type of oil that is used in most processed and packaged foods and what restuaruants use to fry in. Rather than focusing on complete elimination of omega-6 fats from the diet, it is better to decrease consumption of processed and packaged foods and the number of meals eaten out, which will greatly decrease omega-6 oil consumption. Replacing any of the omega-6 fatty acid oils mentioned above with avocado or extra virgin olive oil, will further increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids while also promoting a more balanced intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids for optimal health. Happy Tuesday! Great question and one that I get often. I offer virtual and in-person nutrition counseling sessions for women and men who need help with their nutrition for various reasons. My specialties are working with people to make their health and fitness goals easy to achieve and maintain, while also considering their specific dietary concerns and busy lives. I find most people know nutrition. The real challenge comes when they are trying to maintain a healthy eating style while living incredibly busy lives (and trust me, there are LOTS of tips and tricks!). I also have continuing education in nutrition for perimenopause/menopause and nutrition for sports.
