This book nearly conquered me, but I broke through and actually quite love what Teju Cole does here. Thank goodness. TREMOR hands us a loose patchwork of memories and imaginations from a West African art professor’s life, marriage, and world travels. It’s superbly written and packed with “hell yea” missives on race, art, war, and imperialism, but really makes us work for Cole’s through-line. I had my theories. They wobbled, then corrected. I questioned my intelligence, pressed on, and ultimately feel satisfied. It was worth the wobbling. I know this novel’s a bit esoteric, but I approached TREMOR this way: How might a quite cerebral, academic person process his own mortality, particularly when his most beloved faculties are challenged? And how might we as readers interpret his unspoken questions through the memories he’s curated on the page? Tunde (the artist) imagines: “In a hundred years I will not only be dead but I will also be meaningfully gone, surviving only as rumor, only as trace. And that oblivion comes through suffering, a terrible path to a terrible fate.” It can all read as nihilistic, but in context it actually becomes quite liberating. There’s that idea of sonder - that appreciation of the vastness and complexity of every other person’s life - and a unity and warmth in knowing we all share similar fates (on a grand scale) despite our difference. Apropos or not, I loved this scene from Tunde’s wife toward the end: “Bowls are passed around with heaps of white rice on which the gumbo is served and it’s as though people don’t realize how hungry they are until they began to eat. Drinks are expected at parties but real food isn’t. But we love to feed people. What a gift to get to do this in community. How great is what surrounds us, how insubstantial what preoccupies us. I make eye contact with my love, the one who keeps me from losing my head, the one I keep from losing his footing.” We’re in it alone, friends, but we’re in it together.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Alyssa Cole threw us right in didn’t she?? As the story begins we’re welcomed to Ken and she’s sort of waking up from a long slumber of 6 years. That sounds like some good sleep butttt you have no idea what your alters or headmates were doing while you were gone. Ken suffers from DID (dissociative identity disorder) and has quite a few headmates that take over from time to time. Quite a few weird things happen to Ken and her headmates as she embarks on a new job, even….murder! This was quite the read and I can definitely say I learned a lot about DID. All of the characters gave the story a lot of variety, so many perspectives to everything that was taking place. You never knew who you might get as a new chapter began. I wasn’t expecting some parts of the story line at all and it turned me every which way lol. But overall this was different and a new take on DID and I appreciate Alyssa for providing us with such insight. Uses of Anger, essay by Audre Lorde Most of this essay discusses Lorde’s own experience and response to racism in America. However, one my key takeaways from this essay was Lorde’s distinction of types of anger. There is anger that is born out of prolonged subjection to injustice, but there is also anger that is born out of guilt. The latter remains dormant until it faces demands of accountability. Another interesting observation Audre Lorde presents to her readers is that the society’s response to a woman’s anger, is to relate it to hatred. But in truth the root of anger is not hate. Anger for women is a tool of survival. But she notes that in our society, women are not given the tools to face their anger constructively. Lorde’s distinction of types anger probes a self-reflection of her female readers, and it is not devoid of the author’s own retrospection. At the heart of this reflection is solidarity in diversity. Diversity amongst women will be constructive only if the primary demand for this unity is not relatability inspired by similitude, but a shared need for change, and respect for diversity of experiences as well as responses within this unity. Self scrutiny is key to this communal survival. “What woman here is so enamoured of her own oppression that she cannot see her heel upon another woman’s face? What woman’s terms of oppression have become precious and necessary to her as a ticket into the fold of the righteous, away from the cold winds of self scrutiny?”

Mommy-Daughter Date!!! So glad I had to run back to the Playhouse yesterday to pick up something I left behind, bc Miss Kayla Kelly told me about the @bpipdx Black Lit event! Athena got her face painted, I ran into an old friend from the boys’ daycare (which is no longer; RIP Peninsula Children’s Center) and we were introduced to one of the administers at the new Holla Charter School! Athena also got to meet Portland’s famous @nikkibrownclown, played with a bunch of STEM brain teasers at the @omsi display…and trust me, some of those games were seriously tricky…and out of ALL the children’s books available, she selected a Kobe Bryant book; my girl is such a little hooper-at-heart. 🏀💜 We stopped by the @_chillinthepoet Photo Booth, posed for quick pic and chatted with Ms Jackie, and she received a goodie bag on our way out! I was looking for a book with all the drama and all the jweezy storylines I love in books and I think I found it in The Marriage Class by @adesuwaonwokedi 😁 I started reading earlier this month and I can’t put the book down because I’m here talking back to some of the characters every time I pick up the book to continue reading🙃😂. The Marriage Class follows the lives of ten couples in one marriage class with one decision to make - will they or won’t they stay together? If you can keep up with the couples, this is for you. I can see what you guys were saying about this. Tabby and crew really extra EXtra annoyed me in this book. Before I go in, let me acknowledge that Tabby as a mother is beyond beautiful to read, I never knew I needed that. At first, the easy conversational tone of the writing pulled me like an old friend. The growth in her and her mother’s relationship is admirable. Buuuut... The storyline was predictable and superfluous - repeating the same old cycle. After the second book, I was hopeful, but it's the same. old. Tabby. I didn't get why the author kept giving us recaps, I remember the story and don't need a refresher of book one & two. If I did, I'd just reread them. I cannot ever stand Marc! And just when I thought Tabby was past her timidity, she still failed to speak up for herself in critical moments. When she decided she no longer wanted Marc I was proud of her for choosing herself, for finally knowing that she was enough. She had options & it seemed she was beginning to love herself but she's forever tied to this man with a baby. And after weeks of giving herself excuses to not tell her best friend that a man was interested in her because she, herself, wanted him to be a rebound she'd settle for, I realized Tabby still tied her worth to being chosen. Even tho, she JUST had a baby. Maybe mid-book I allowed myself to dream Marc would be better written, but once again, he made me hate him. Once she had the baby, he expected her whole life to stop, to just be tied to the house, no career, no choices, just sacrifices. Marc's presence had a way of casting her whole being and successful career in the shadows. In his delusion, he can have a career while being a father, but she can't while being a mother. It's nothing new, which is why it's infuriating🙄 Marc, his mother & his patriarchal ideals should have been exiled a long time ago! But we're forced to endure them. The forced trip to Florida... I can't even...😌 The ending was predictable but okay, she kinda chooses herself again. As long as she's stuck to this idiot she'll always be in doubt. Úrsula, by Maria Firmina dos Reis was published in 1859 by San Luiz. It was the first Afro-Brazilian novel and also the first Brazilian abolitionist novel. Maria Firmina dos Reis (March 11 1822 - November 11 1917) was born on São Luis Island in the state of Maranhão. Her mother Leonor was a former slave and her father was the wealthy business partner of her mother's slave owner. In 1830, she moved with her family to São José de Guimarães, a village on the mainland. From 1847 to 1881 she worked as an elementary school teacher. Úrsula was published anonymously and was her only major novel. She continued to write, publishing short stories and collections of poems. Her writing served as a powerful instrument of social critique and advocacy for the abolitionist movement in Brazil.
