šŸDecember Buzzwordathon: Sound-Related WordsšŸ Here I go playing catch up with end-of-year content! Bear with me! šŸ¤Ŗ Decemberā€™s group of buzzwords for the 2023 Buzzword Reading Challenge was the word ā€œsoundā€ and anything related to sound (or the absence of it). I managed to find three books that worked for this prompt! MPLS Sound: A fun graphic novel following a fictional band in Minneapolis, and their interactions with Prince. The Quiet Tenant: A dark thriller about a woman who has been kidnapped and held by a man in a shed for 5 yearsā€¦but things begin to unravel when he has to move her into the main house with his daughter. A Girl Called Echo, Vol. 2: This graphic novel series follows Echo in present day Canada, who can travel to the past and learn more about her MĆ©tis historyā€”firsthand. QOTD: Do you like to do readathons and reading challenges? I love them, but I think Iā€™m going to try to cut back in 2024 because I do too many šŸ˜…ā€¦Iā€™ll always be participating in Buzzwordathon though!

ā€˜ Apologies for the lack of posts and interaction - life has been busy since October! Iā€™m finally feeling more human after being so nauseous in my first trimester, we moved house and have been catching up on life ever since šŸ˜… I have finally read a few more books after months of not reading a single page and it feels so good to be back! I eventually got around to unwrapping the final How Novel books from the subscription I was gifted last Christmas so I thought Iā€™d let you have a nosey on what books I got. Iā€™ve already read Donā€™t You Cry as my final book of 2023 to finish off my #buzzwordathon2023 reading challenge and really enjoyed the fast pace of it - a good ending to the year that will hopefully lead to a good start for my 2024 readsšŸ“š. I canā€™t wait to catch up with you all šŸ¤ ā€˜ šŸ·ļø #booksubscription #bookmail #wrappedbooks #blinddatewithabook #hownovel #booksta #bookcommunity #reader #booklover

I completed my Buzzword-a-thon 2023 challenge. I enjoy doing this every year. Itā€™s fun to choose books from my TBR shelves to fit the keywords. The only book I just couldnā€™t get through on this list was The Secret History by Donna Tartt, which was really disappointing for me, because it is a book Iā€™ve wanted to read for a long time. It just ended up being so dense and wordy and over 100 pages in, it didnā€™t seem to be going anywhere! Has anyone read it, and if so, does it get better? Is it worth it to push through?? I hate to completely love up on it, but itā€™s been set aside for a while now. Iā€™ve already set aside the books I plan to read for this years challenge. :) QOTD: Do you enjoy reading challenges? Which one(s) do participate in? #buzzwordathon2023 #readingchallenge #kcbookstagram

šŸ–¤A page turneršŸ–¤ šŸ–¤A heart stirreršŸ–¤ šŸ–¤A smile makeršŸ–¤ If you liked ā€œThe Red Tent" (Anita Diamant) this book is for you! The story is an imagining of what may have brought a young girl to become the woman known today as Mary Magdalene from Biblical times. Its not preachy at all in the 'Christian sense' which I really appreciated. I found the story of her relationship with her handicapped friend very moving and brought a lot of understanding to something that is foreign to me. The writing is very poignant and moved me to tears a few times. This has been my first five-star read since April šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ˜Œ BOOK: Song of Magdalene by Donna Jo Napoli šŸŒ¬šŸ·šŸ·šŸ· #BuzzwordReadathon2023 #booktography #buzzwordathon2023 #igbooks #booksmeller #bookstagram #bookreader #bookish #bibliophile #books #bookstagrammer #bookcommunity #instabooks #goodreads #booktography #bookworm #booknerd #bĆ¼cherliebe

šŸNovember Buzzwordathon: ā€œGoodā€šŸ Novemberā€™s buzzword for the Buzzwordathon Reading Challenge was books with the word ā€œgoodā€ in the title. These were both books I had been meaning to get to for a long time! One of the Good Ones: A YA contemporary story following the life of the younger sister of a girl who was killed in police custody after attending a protest. A Good Girlā€™s Guide to Murder: A YA mystery/thriller about a girl investigating a presumed-solved crime that occurred in her hometown 5 years earlierā€¦but sheā€™s not convinced the right perpetrator was identified šŸ‘€ QOTD: Both of the books I read for this month happened to be young adult titlesā€¦what are some of your favorite YA novels?

Review: The Good Girl Genre: Thriller Verdict: āļøāļøāļøāļøšŸ’« Iā€™ve been interested in Mary Kubica for a while so I hoped I would enjoy thisā€¦and I enjoyed it even more than expected! Itā€™s rare lately that I have the urge to stay up late reading, but the last 100 or so pages had me in that ā€œjust one more chapterā€ mode. It was so easy to read!! The writing style is to the point and the chapters are short which makes for a faster reading experience. It was satisfying to feel like I was making quick progress. Jumping around in the before/after timelines and the multiple POVs also kept the story fresh and fast paced. Is it a red flag that Iā€™m a sucker for Stockholm syndrome? šŸ’€ But really, I was pleasantly surprised by the unexpectedā€¦can we call itā€¦romance? Okay, itā€™s not romance, but I was still here for how this captor/captive relationship developed. The twists werenā€™t revolutionary but they kept things fresh & thereā€™s comfort in sort of already knowing the ending. As a debut, this was great and makes me excited to try some of her newer titles ā›…ļø

I couldn't have asked for a better reading experience for my 100th book of the year, Still Life by Sarah Winman - 5 stars! āāāāā After so many of my highly anticipated books this year have been disappointing, I picked this book off my tbr shelf on whim in order to fulfil the "life + death" prompt of buzzwordathon. I definitely didn't expect to find a new 5 star read! I first heard about this book from @leenanorms in her best books of 2021 video, I bought it in July 2022, and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. I wish I had started it sooner but also I think I read it at just the right time. All I really knew going in was Leena's description that it had a "beautiful friendship" at the heart of the story. There's so many things about this book that I typically wouldn't enjoy - historical fiction spanning decades, omniscient pov, long chapters, no quotations around dialogue - but somehow Sarah Winman uses all these to tell an enchanting story about heartwarming friendships that shape each other's lives. Initially, I thought this book would focus on the two characters who meet at the beginning but it's so much more than that, there's a small community who love and care for each other during the best and worst times of their lives; there are so many characters in this book but each of them is given depth and enough page time that you really get to know and understand all of them. The setting and atmosphere are so well done, so many descriptions of delicious food and hot, summery weather. I really enjoyed the discussions of art as well. It made me laugh and cry! It made me feel hopeful and full of joy! This book isn't particularly high paced or action packed, but the quiet way we follow these characters' lives is captivating. I didn't want to put it down but also I didn't want it to end! I was hooked from about 12 pages in and knew from so early on that this would be a 5 star read. I'm so glad to have read it! šŸ“šāœØ #fivestarreads #reading #books #stilllife #readingmytbr #buzzwordathon2023 #sarahwinman #fictionbooks #bookstagram #recentreads

šŸOctober Buzzwordathon: ā€œMagicā€šŸ Octoberā€™s buzzword for the #Buzzwordathon Reading Challenge was ā€œmagic,ā€ which was perfect for spooky season! Root Magic: A middle grade story following Jezebel and her twin brother Jay as their uncle decides theyā€™re old enough to start learning their familyā€™s rootwork traditions following the death of their beloved grandmother in 1963. Harrow County, Vol. 6 - Hedge Magic: The 6th volume in the Harrow County comic series, following Emmy, who discovers she has a strange and horrifying connection with the haints and monsters who haunt their little southern town. QOTD: If you had magical powers, what would you be most excited to do with them? šŸ‘€ I would definitely be grabbing a broom to fly almost immediately!

Review: Spells for Forgetting Genre: Magical Realism Verdict: āļøāļøāļøāļø Whimsical, mysterious, and magical ā€“ this genre-bending book really has it all. Which is why itā€™s so perfect for many readers!! You want second chance romance? Got that. You want murder mystery? Got that. You want magical realism? Got that. You want thrilling moments? Got that. You want small town? Got that. You want multi-pov? Got that. And on top of it all, itā€™s also super atmospheric and full of secrets. The island is almost a character in itself. I enjoyed all the elements but if I had one critique it would be wanting more magic! It was sprinkled in but I wouldā€™ve loved to feel it even more, especially reading it at this time of year. Youā€™ll definitely want to pick this up if youā€™re looking for something lightly magical and witchy this season. šŸ–¤šŸ‚šŸ•·ļø

šŸSeptember Buzzwordathon: Game WordsšŸ The group of buzzwords for September for the Buzzwordathon Reading Challenge was ā€œGameā€ or other game-related words (play, win, lose, first, last, etc.) One of my reading goals for this year is to start reading more of my Book of the Month books as I get them, so I was thrilled that two of my recent picks worked for this month! The Wishing Game: A woman finds herself in a Willy Wonka-esque competition to win the only copy of the newest novel from her favorite childrenā€™s authorā€”who hasnā€™t written a book in decades. The Last Word: A thriller about a woman who gives a book a bad review online, and suddenly worries sheā€™s being stalked and the author may be out for revengeā€¦ QOTD: What is your favorite board game? I love a lot of games but Clue always has a special place in my heart! šŸŽ²ā™ŸļøšŸ•µšŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Some people designate a week during the month to do this, some people read their pick any time during the month. Some people pick one book, and others pick multiple books. Octoberā€™s buzzword is MAGIC. šŸŖ„ Since magic can be a hard one to find, it is extended to witch, wizard, curse, spell, charm, ect. On my physical shelves I have HP and the SCORCERERā€™S stone, Wild is the WITCH, The nature of WITCHES, and The titanā€™s CURSE. The titanā€™s curse is the only one I havenā€™t read yet. On my kindle I have picked up A Darker Shade Of MAGIC by VE Schwab on Kindle Unlimited. I decided to start my October Buzzword-a-thon read a few days early since my book club didnā€™t have an assigned book this month. Helps me work on my TBR! Octoberā€™s challenge was a book with a ā€œMagicā€ related word in the title. I went with the actual word ā€œmagicā€ and will read one of my old book box reads ā€œThe Best Kind of Magicā€ by Crystal Cestari. Itā€™s not my normal go to type of book, but it should be a cute, fast read. Itā€™s published by a Disney imprint and is a YA romance of sorts. Review: The Wishing Game Genre: Contemporary Fiction Verdict: āļøāļøāļøšŸ’« I wanted to love this as much as everyone else has but it just left me wanting MORE. I needed more whimsy, more mystery, higher stakes, more riddles and games. more drama, some magic. This story had all of those things but not enoughhhhh. While the writing is still good and a breeze to read and enjoy, I just feel like the plot had more promise than what we ended up with. We couldā€™ve had more adventure or explored the setting more. There couldā€™ve been a speculative nature about it where we questioned if Clock Island really is magic. We couldā€™ve had a clear antagonist or threat to our characters beyond just not winning the game. There couldā€™ve been some twists along the way. I loved the premise of this book so much and the famed childhood book series concept had me nostalgic for the books I read as a kid, but I think because I wanted so much from it, I was left a bit disappointed. Here me out, this book is not bad!! I really think many of you will enjoy it and I actually recommend you read it for the nostalgia and love its exudes. It just didnā€™t fully reach its potential for me and thatā€™s why I canā€™t gush over it like so many have! I chose this as my #buzzwordathon selection for the prompt ā€œgame relatedā€ šŸ’œ

9/24/2023, 10:44:02 PM

Getting to start this book tonight. Iā€™ve been excited to read it since reading the first chapter, which really pulled me in from the start! Iā€™m excited to see where the story will go. Swipe left for the synopsis. Iā€™m reading this for the Buzzword-a-thon reading challenge- which is for September ā€œGame related wordsā€ - I couldā€™ve used my Bookclub read for the challenge, but I already had this one picked out to read. I got this book back when I subscribed to the Goldsboro Books of the month. They have really cool books - based in the UK. This one has pretty red sprayed edges, is signed and is numbered. (One of 250 signed first editions printed). They always wrap the dust jackets in protective plastic too. Maybe Iā€™ll get to visit their storefront in London one day. Have you heard of this one? Here is the book I read quickly for my September #buzzwordathon2023 for the prompt ā€œgame related wordsā€ (lose). This book is a big punch in a tiny page count. The story of two time traveling spies/assassins/manipulators from opposing factions who start exchanging letters, first as taunts before developing into more. I LOVED this little book. Immediate favorite of all time. The details of the plot can be confusing, but thatā€™s okay. The plot is not the point. The point is their beautiful relationship and the beautiful writing. It borders on purple without ever reaching it, which is my favorite kind of prose. If youā€™re in the mood for sentences that tingle in your brain, give this one a go. #bookstagram #thisishowyoulosethetimewar

Reading Challenge Check-in: Buzzwordathon 2023 šŸšŸ Since there's only 4 months left of the year I thought I should probably check in with how the reading challenge I'm doing was going, and it's a lot better than I expected! I've hit 6/12 of the prompts, just from reading books on my tbr and I think I might be able to do the other 6 by the end of the year šŸ¤© I'm not very good at using this challenge to read books I've never heard of/have no interest in, since I'm undoubtedly a mood reader, but it is still fun trying to see if I can meet all of the prompts! Slide 2 has all the books I've read so far, and slide 3 is all the books on my tbr that fit the prompts I've yet to get to! My book for the #buzzwordathon2023 for Augustā€™s prompt ā€œbody parts,ā€ is The Witchā€™s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. This book tells the story of Angrboda, a prophetess who forms a relationship with the Norse god Loki, and gives birth to some very unusual figures. I really enjoyed this book, the characters were well developed and all the relationships were interesting. I find that a lot of mythology retellings struggle to find the balance between a fairy-tale style of writing and a more modern one, but this book walked that line very well. 4 āļø #bookstagram #buzzwordathon #thewitchsheart

Starting my August Buzzwordathon Challenge read, which is a book with a body related word in the title. I chose ā€œStarry Eyesā€ by Jenn Bennett for the word ā€œeyesā€. This is a backlogged book from when I got book boxes and this one was from Uppercase Box, which was YA and always signed. Maybe I can get it in before month end. LOVED the book club book I just finished. It was a breathe of fresh air for me, because it was such a fast read, and Iā€™ve been struggling for several months with distracted reading. Review: Head Over Heels Genre: Contemporary Verdict: āļøāļøāļøšŸ’« I didnā€™t really have high expectations going into this book because the last romance I read left me disappointed. BUT I was pleasantly surprised!! I was needing a better experience and I think why this worked was because itā€™s much more than just romance! I wouldnā€™t even classify it as primarily romance because the relationship in the book isnā€™t as central to the plot. The true focus is Avery finding herself again, recovering from heartbreak, and working with Hallie and Ryan to get Hallie to the Olympics. So much is focused on the sport of gymnastics, the drawbacks and highlights, and what these athletes go through in their careers. I really enjoyed the writing and reading experience. Why itā€™s not a 4 is just because it didnā€™t reach ā€œreally goodā€ status for me. I donā€™t have many complaints but the vibes just didnā€™t hit a full 4 for me. This would be a GREAT choice to read next year when the Olympics are back again!! šŸ¤øšŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ‘šŸ» I picked this for my August #buzzwordathon prompt of ā€œbody partsā€.

šŸJuly Buzzwordathon: Weather WordsšŸ The category of buzzwords for July for the Buzzword Reading Challenge was words related to weather. I just so happened to pick two middle grade books for this one! The Shape of Thunder: The story of two former best friends, Cora and Quinn, who are navigating their grief in different ways and havenā€™t spoken to each other since Quinnā€™s brother perpetrated a school sho*ting and Coraā€™s sister was a victim. The Case of Windy Lake: A middle grade mystery story about four cousins living on the Windy Lake First Nation reservation and trying to find a missing archeologist who had been visiting the reservation. QOTD: Do you read middle grade very often? What are some of your favorite middle grade books? šŸ‘€

This is my first year participating in the buzzwordathon reading challenge and so far Iā€™m loving it. It pushes me to read books that have been in my TBR and that I wasnā€™t really going to read soon and it also helps me discover new books to add to my TBR. It even helped me find one of my favorites books of this year. For the month of august Iā€™ve chosen to read borrow my heart by @kasiewest and Iā€™m so excited to read it. I read places weā€™ve never been recently, which was her 2022 release, and I really liked it. Having read her books from 2013/2014, Iā€™m loving how she is growing as an author and how her stories are only getting better with the years. So if Borrow my heart has similar vibes to places weā€™ve never been, I know Iā€™m in for a great read. #borrowmyheart #kasiewest #augustprompt #augustbuzzwordathon #buzzwordathon #buzzwordathon2023 #books #book #bookstagram

There relationship takes a turn for the worse and she struggles with how to handle it. Mini Review: I appreciated the messaging in this book. The story never felt overbearing or preaching. The frustration with the main character was messy, but thatā€™s what true life is like. The pacing was good, it never felt slow. I did feel that several of the side characters felt inconsistent, and flat. The voice of the main character felt like it shift at times and that did take me out of the story. Overall a solid YA contemporary that addresses themes of domestic abuse and mental illness.
