Would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the Great Gatsby. Carrie was a very relatable character and her adventures through America had me captivated. This story of rags to riches was also a moralistic one, but that is to be expected from a book written in 1899 😅 “When a girl leaves home at eighteen, she does one of two things. Either she falls into saving hands and becomes better, or she rapidly assumes the cosmopolitan standard of virtue and becomes worse.” #bookreviewsbyabooklover #bookreview #bookrecommendation #booktok #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #30for30 #physicaltbr #wrappedtbr #wrappedtbrchallenge #wrappedbooks #sistercarrie #sistercarriebook #theodoredreiser #theodoredreisersistercarrie #bookquotes

Sweet Read boxes are on their way! It's a good thing I enjoy wrapping books. Or should I say it's a good thing it's books I have to wrap? 🤣 Also very thankful for audio books that keep me company while I pack all the parcels and boxes each month! This is my short breathing space before I have to think about next month's offerings. But I'm still taking subscriptions! And queries. Also April newsletter will be coming out soon so if you haven't already, go to the website and sign up! You can get a discount code for your first subscription. 😉

Almost DNFed this one 🎓👯‍♀️✂️ I found this book had too many tropes in it and the plot twists were really obvious. What was the real killer for me was the awkward love triangle between Jess, Coop and Mint. I didn’t get why that was shoehorned in there. The writing style was quite beautiful and elegant though. I really liked how well put together everything was and how nicely paced the whole book was. The cliffhangers were added in at just the right moments within the jumping timelines. #bookreviewsbyabooklover #bookreview #booktok #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks📚 #instagrammademebuyit #instagrammademereadit #30for30 #physicaltbr #wrappedbooks #wrappedbooksunwrapped #darkacademia #darkacademiabooks #inmydreamsiholdaknife #ashelywinstead #readersgonnaread

I finished the Shadow and Bone series over Spring Break! By the end, I was in love. The first book was good, the second book was alright, and the third book was fantastic! This youth series has action, love, war, politics, redemption, and plot twists. I tore through books 2 and 3 in three days (mainly because I go back to work tomorrow and won’t have time to just lay around and read until after the STAAR test 🤷🏻‍♀️) Book 1: Shadow and Bone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 2: siege and Storm ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 3: Ruin and Rising ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #mediocrereader #mediocrereaderblog #wrappedbooks #wrappedbookseries #read #readmore #readmorebooks #booksbooksbooks #booksfordays #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #instabook #igreads #bibliophile #bookworm #booklover #booknerd #bookcommunity #readersunite #bookishcontent #bookvibes #shadowandbone #leighbardugo

Book 7 of my TBR Wrapped Books series was Shadow and Bone #1. It’s a YA series, so it’s easy to read, but it has surprising world building and use of Russian language and culture. I enjoyed it! I’m pausing the rest of my TBR to finish out the series. Book 6 of my TBR Wrapped Books series was Mad Honey, coauthored by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan. It was weird to read this right after reading Gone Girl because it had a similar plot line and writing style…. at first. The chapters flip flop between two character’s perspectives, with one set of chapters moving forward in time and the other moving backwards. Someone has been murdered, and someone is on trial. PLOT TWIST: The plot twist in the middle sheds light on important topics and current day issues that still need solving. It was incredibly thought provoking while keeping me on the edge of my seat with wondering what the outcome would be. #mediocrereader #mediocrereaderblog #wrappedbooks #wrappedbookseries #read #readmore #readmorebooks #booksbooksbooks #booksfordays #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #instabook #igreads #bibliophile #bookworm #booklover #booknerd #bookcommunity #readersunite #bookishcontent #bookvibes #madhoney #jodipicoult #jenniferfinneyboylan #mystery #fiction

I don't usually post anything about vacations but I stopped at this bookstore today for two reasons. One it just looked like a cool, small business bookstore and two I saw a TikTok about this very store and that they had wrapped books with just a few words describing the book and I thought that would be pretty cool. Knowing of course I most likely wouldn't be familiar with the book or even like the book I purchased. But the good thing about books is you can leave them in free libraries or donate them to libraries so a book never goes to waste. I read the covers of each book. I put back sitting with romance on it. I found two that I thought might be interesting so I went for it. ☀️ Thoughtful Thursday ☀️ This was one of my (very few) 5 star reads of 2023 - I LOVED this book. It tells the story of 15-year old Ana, who lives in the Dominican Republic countryside but immigrates as a young bride to New York City. It's a coming-of-age story, and it was beautiful to watch how this quiet young woman grows to find her voice in the world. But it was also tough read - her husband, Juan, is a 'tight-fisted brute' and the novel doesn't shy away from painting a grim picture of 1960's Washington Heights for a female immigrant. One critic described it as a "thrilling portrait of what it means to be an immigrant" and I'd wholeheartedly agree. I can remember exactly where I was when I read Dominicana (on holiday in Croatia) - is there a novel you've read that has stuck in your mind, because you can remember where you were when you read it?

⭐️ Audiobooks ⭐️ Okay, so I have a confession about audiobooks… I’m just not sure I really “get” them?! I’ve tried a few audiobooks but haven’t managed to actually finish one - I either can’t get into the story or find the narrator annoying. I think I also get intimidated when the app tells me how long I have left in the book - I’m often thinking “omg 12 hours of listening to get through this tedious book with a terrible narrator AAARRGGGGHH” I would really love to actually listen to a whole audiobook though so please do share your recommendations! What’s your favourite audiobook to listen to? Do you have any top tips for listening to an audiobook?

💃 Two For Tuesday 💃 A book I've read and enjoyed, and another in my #tbr pile that I'm looking forward to reading - this time by the same author, Taylor Jenkins Reid! 📚 Daisy Jones & The Six - I read this book around the same time as the TV show came out and so there was a LOT of Daisy Jone hype when I was reading it - my expectations were high! Overall I did really enjoy the book. It was something we read at book club and some people found the format, with the story being told as a series of interviews, a bit jarring and thought the story lacked depth as a result. I quite liked it though; for me, the format kept things moving and I sped through it quite quickly. I LOVED the TV series, and "Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)" was one of my most played songs of 2023 😍 📚 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - This has been repeatedly recommended to me and I can't wait to read it. It's an upcoming read for my bookclub so I'm looking forward to getting stuck in! Have you read either of these? What's your favourite TJR novel (I've also got Malibu Rising in my tbr pile!)

📚 Spell The Month In Books 📚 Thanks @allysahreads for tagging me in this challenge to spell out the word 'February' in book titles! It was great fun although it turns out I have a distinct lack of books that begin with the letter 'y'...! Books featured: 📕 Freedom by Jonathan Franzen 📕 Empress Orchid by Anchee Min 📕 Bournville by Jonathan Coe 📕 Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier 📕 Us by David Nicholls 📕 An American Marriage by Tayari Jones 📕 Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld 📕 (a) Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell I (shockingly!) haven't read any of these books yet apart from 1 (must stop adding to my humungous #tbr pile) - have you read any? What did you think? Have you got many books that begin with the letter 'y' or would you also struggle like me?! Tagging a few bookstafriends to give this challenge a go too!

I’m doing that TikTok trend where you wrap your TBR, number them randomly, and then read whatever book corresponds with the number you draw from a jar. 🤣🥰📚 I’m so excited to do this trend because 1, It’s like gifting myself my own books and being surprised by what I open and 2, I obviously have an addiction to buying books, and unfortunately, I tend to read whatever newest books I buy. Meaning I have books that have been on my TBR for YEARS! Lol. This randomized method ensures that some of my older babies will finally be read sooner than later. Have you ever thought of doing this trend?? 🌟Next Book On My List 🌟 I'm hoping to finish my current read tonight (The History of Bees by Maja Lunde) so it's time to choose my next book! I absolutely love spending time thinking about what to read next - my #tbr pile is **ahem** a bit on the long side but the benefit of this is that I have lots of novels to choose from! I've narrowed it down to the following books: 📚 Big Swiss by Jen Beagin 📚 Issac and the Egg by Bobby Palmer 📚 This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub 📚 Tin Man by Sarah Winman Help me choose! Which should I read next?

🌟 Thoughtful Thursday 🌟 This book came onto my radar after it won the 2023 Women's Prize for Fiction and I read it for my work book club. It's a reimagining of David Copperfield, a coming-of-age saga set in modern-day rural America. I was completely drawn in by Demon's story - the losses he experiences especially from such a young age, the abuse, neglect, and poverty, but also his ability to survive. What really struck me was how the novel shone an unflinching light on America's opioid crises, and in particular the role that big-pharma has played in its development. It left me questioning the extent to which we can hold someone accountable for the bad choices they may have made, and how we need to take into account the impact of negative external influences and multiple failed systems. Have you read Demon Copperhead? I'd love to know what you thought!

🔵 Two For Tuesday 🔵 Sharing a book I've read and loved, and another in my #tbr pile that I'm looking forward to reading - on a random blue theme (I'm not a huge Valentine's Day fan, so I think I've subconsciously chosen a colour that is quite the opposite to pink and red...) 📚 Still Life by Sarah Winman - another historical novel, set in gorgeous Florence and (slightly less gorgeous, but still wonderful) East London. This book is quite an epic read - spanning four decades and nearly 450 pages - but the characters have such depth, and their relationships are so beautifully intertwined, that it's definitely worth reading. The book felt very cinematic and I could imagine it as an excellent TV series! 📚 Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes - given to me as a Christmas present, it's not normally a novel I would have picked up. I haven't really read any books focussed on Greek mythology but I've seen some great reviews on bookstagram. I'm looking forward to reading it! Have you read either of these books? If so, what did you think?

🌟 Thoughtful Thursday 🌟 (Trying out a new title - what do you think?!) I thought it was probably time to share a thought-provoking read that isn't a dystopian apocalyptic novel (!!), so this week I'm sharing American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. It tells the story of a Mexican bookseller who suddenly has to flee to the United States when her journalist husband exposes a drug cartel. I'll be honest, I found this a difficult novel to start with - the beginning is very intense, but there are sections later in the novel that I found much slower and meandering. This varying pace was tricky to navigate, but by the end I found myself completely consumed by the story and Lydia and Luca's extraordinary journey. I know there were mixed reviews and some controversy surrounding the book, but overall I felt the novel shone an important light on some of the issues surrounding migration. Through the story of Lydia and Luca's ordeal, the author humanised the migrant crises and it's prompted me to better educate myself on the experience of those who seek to rebuild their life in another country. Have you read American Dirt? What did you think?

✨ Meet The Bookstagrammer ✨ I've now been on Bookstagram for just over a month, so I thought it was about time that I share a bit more about myself beyond the books I like to read! (oooohhhh it is SCARY to share stuff about myself rather than my books 😱- here we go, please be kind!) 📚 I'm Hayley and I live in the UK, in a small town close to London. 📚 I have two amazing daughters who inspire and motivate me every day. 📚 I studied politics at University and spent a decade working as a lawyer. I now work for a small access to justice charity which I absolutely love. 📚 I'm an extroverted introvert - I enjoy socialising but I need quiet time to recharge my energy levels! 📚 My choice of drink on a night out would be a glass of good wine/fizz or an Aperol Spritz 🍹 📚 I'm a mood reader and like to read a variety of different types of novels. I'm not a huge fan of romance/fantasy though (but always willing to try!) Anyway that's enough about me, tell me about you! Where are you from, and what do you like to read? 👇

Happy Tuesday bookish friends! This is Book Club Week! I facilitate two neighborhood book clubs and this month they happen to fall during the same week. Last night we discussed The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer and on Thursday morning we will discuss Homecoming by Kate Morton. In January, I started a new thing known as “Blind Date With A Book”. As a bookstagrammer and a book lover, I have way too many books. I also get ARC’s from time to time and they start to pile up. My IRL friend, fellow book club member AND bookstagrammer @megsbookclub also has tons of books so we decided to collaborate in a fun way and share these books! I wrapped them up and created a tag on the front with some basic info but not the title. So at book club each month everyone gets to pick a book based on the description and it’s so fun to see what’s inside! It’s a super fun way to end the book club meeting! Anyone who wants to, can bring the book back after they read it and I’ll wrap it back up for someone else to choose. So much bookish fun! Here’s what I include on the description: 📚Genre 📚Publication date 📚Setting 📚Short synopsis 📚Female or male author 📚I also add “Wendy reviewed” if it’s one that I posted about on Instagram. Isn’t this a fun idea for book club? I just thought I would share. Are you in a book club? Let me know if you’d like more info on how I run our club. We’ve been meeting for many years and we’re still going strong. I find the best way to keep everyone interested is to be flexible and casual. We don’t have a lot of rules, we just read fantastic books and get together once a month to chat about them. #bookclub #blinddatewithabook #bookishpost #bookphoto #books #bookstack #wrappedbooks #igreads #bookstagram #bibliophile #homelibrary #booksofinstagram #somanybooks #thrillerfiction #fiction #nonfiction #secretbook #library #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #readmorebooks #bookcommunity #booklover

☀️ Two For Tuesday ☀️ Brrrr it is cold and blustery today, so I'll be spending much of the day thinking about summer holidays, sunshine and warm summer evenings. With this in mind, I'm sharing my #twofortuesday along a summer theme! One book I've read and loved, and another in my #tbr pile that I'm looking forward to reading: 📚 Theatre for Dreamers by Polly Samson - oh man I LOVED this book. It's a coming-of-age story set on the Greek island of Hydra in the 1960s and it is absolutely delicious. It's pure 'armchair escapism' as one critic put it, and made me want to instantly book flights to Greece. An excellent summer read. 📚 Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell. I have to confess that I've haven't read anything by Maggie O'Farrell before (😱) but I do have two of her novels in my ever-growing #tbr pile. Set in 1970s London during a heatwave, I'm looking forward to reading it when it warms up a bit! Have you read either of these? If so, what did you think?

🌟 Thought-Provoking Thursday 🌟 (Still not sure about the title, but rolling with it until I come up with something better!) Continuing with my love of dystopian apocalyptic novels, The Stranding was a book that I really loved. Most end-of-the-world novels I've read have been about the end-of-the-world event and its immediate aftermath. This novel runs along two strikingly contrasting timelines - Ruth's ordinary city life before the world ends, and her journey to create a life for herself post-apocalypse. I found post-apocalyptic Ruth truly fascinating - her ability to survive, her strength and resilience, and how she goes about building a new life. I really liked the fact the the novel didn't just focus on the immediate aftermath, but instead gave the reader an insight into Ruth's life decades into the future. Running the timelines side-by-side, and juxtaposing Ruth's ordinary pre-apocalyptic life with her quite extraordinary post-apocalyptic one, forces the reader to really think about what's important. Certainly a thought-provoking read. I'm really interested to hear whether you've read this book? Do you also enjoy dystopian novels?

✨ Next Book On My List ✨ I whizzed through So Late In The Day by Claire Keegan last night (another amazing book, I just love her) so it's time to choose a new book from my #tbr pile! I need something that's a bit lighter than some of the books I've read in January (👀 looking at you, Babel 👀) so I picked out a couple of slim novels and added two more to match the red-ish theme: 📚 Wandering Souls by Cecile Pin 📚 The Inseparables by Simone de Beauvoir 📚 Waiting for Sunrise by William Boyd 📚 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer Would love to know which you think I should pick...!?

⭐️ Thought-Provoking Thursday ⭐️ (Trying something out here.. a post each Thursday about a thought-provoking book… let’s go with it for now and see how long it lasts 😬) So I need to know - HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK?! It’s a novel that was a really hard read for me. I love modern sci-fi thrillers, and this firmly sits in that box, but I found parts of it deeply uncomfortable and really struggled with some of the ideas (mainly the theme park concept (IYKYK..) but also the talking pig…) But someone recently told me they loved this book, and I have to admit it’s one that I do think about every so often. It’s also one that I talk about with bookish friends - not necessarily as a recommendation, but in a “well if you think that’s odd, I read this book about a talking pig” kinda way… I’d love to know if you’ve read this book and, if so, what did you think?

“Too many books? I think what you mean is not enough bookshelves” So I saw a tik tok of a girl wrapping her physical tbr books, numbering them and then having a surprise for the next read when you pull the number out a pot. I just had to jump on the bandwagon. It’s took my approximately 3 days to finish wrapping and numbering and getting everything ready but I think it’s so worth it🤩 #book #bookqueensmay18 #bookstagramgalentinesday #booklover #bookclubfavoritesinsiders #bookbonanza18 #bookstareviewweek #bookstagramtogethermay #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #readers #readersofinstagram #readstagram #instareaders #istareader #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #booksbooksbooks📚 #booksbooks #wrappedbooks #bookswrappingsession #bookshelf #bookshelves #bookspines #bookslover #booksofinstagram #ilovebooks #ilovereading

2023 was a hectic year, in life and in books! Looking back on some of my stats for the year is always fun and interesting! Over the years I’ve tracked more and more information on the books I read and here are some of them 🤩 132 books read 52,187 pages (according to goodreads) 3.92 average rating 44 five stars 23% physical books 22% new authors to me 29 re reads (I’m a huge fan of rereading!) 37% books with rep of some kind or things that should be talked about (lgbtqia+, mental health, body positivity, abuse etc) Pretty happy with that! The main ones I want to improve next year is a higher percentage of physical books since I have so many yet to read! And getting my TBR down by reading or culling it. How'd your 2023 in books go?

𝙈𝙮 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 Hola amistades! 🏷️ #wrappedbooks #bookreel #bookrecommendations #bookreview #newyear #2023rewind #bookstagramlatam #libroseninstagram #librosderomance #librosdefantasia #libros #libroslibroslibros #librosrecomendados #topbooks

Tampoco pido tanto, ¿no? Por un 2024 lleno de lecturas maravillosas y que podamos comentarlas juntos. #bookstagram #books2023 #lecturas2023 #librostagram #livrestagram #librosrecomendados #booksIread #booksIloved #wrappedbooks #librosqueleo

The Quarantinis Book Club started as an act of self-preservation during the pandemic—as a virtual way to connect with friends via @messenger, to escape reality together. While we do not meet as often as before, we still read our monthly pick currently…and in December—as befits the most wonderful time of the year—I get to see all my friends in person in one place. 😍 This year, I decided to gift my beautiful friends with a #blinddatewithabook —lovingly wrapping the books and adding fun clues about its contents. I also added tea and face masks to make the package all the cozier. #selfcare #hygge #bookclub #christmasgifts #girlfriends #bffls #bookstagram #bookish #booklover #reader #wrappedbooks #wrapped #bibliophile #giftwrapping #bookswap #ilovebooks #booknerd #bookworm #christmasbooks #booksbooksbooks #ilovereading #mysterydatewithabook #bookishgifts #bookgifts #jolabokaflod #bookaesthetic #bookaholic #booklife #christmaspresents

‘ Apologies for the lack of posts and interaction - life has been busy since October! I’m finally feeling more human after being so nauseous in my first trimester, we moved house and have been catching up on life ever since 😅 I have finally read a few more books after months of not reading a single page and it feels so good to be back! I eventually got around to unwrapping the final How Novel books from the subscription I was gifted last Christmas so I thought I’d let you have a nosey on what books I got. I’ve already read Don’t You Cry as my final book of 2023 to finish off my #buzzwordathon2023 reading challenge and really enjoyed the fast pace of it - a good ending to the year that will hopefully lead to a good start for my 2024 reads📚.
