The most common thing I have heard is Calisthenics is Bodyweight Training. No, it's not we include skills , bodyweight exercise and progressively add on External weights so there is a notion that it only includes Bodyweight exercises but it's not. We add weights to learn skills as well. If you need to upgrade yourself you need to add external resistance so that you can increase internal force production. . . . . . . . #calisthenincs #defination #workout #training #motivation #truth #awareness #calisthenicsworkout #calisthenicsmovement #health #fitness #nutrition #weights #weightedtraining #thoughts

A good idea in theory.โฃ โฃ But without a doubt this is FUCKED up all the time! โฃ People set the most unrealistic time frames to learn a skill. โฃ This could be due to many reasons. โฃ โฃ I have personally found that the two reasons below are the biggest culprits.โฃ โฃ Influences promising bullshit (learn a handstand in 30 days etc) and people buying into it.โฃ โฃ Or โฃ โฃ The other reason is people want things quickly and working hard for something is too much effort. This is why people buy into the above mentioned reason.โฃ โฃ So they give themselves a short time frame hoping that they can learn fast. โฃ โฃ This almost always fails.โฃ โฃ People donโ€™t like to hear โ€œit takes timeโ€. The reality is though, it takes time. โฃ โฃ So, no you will not learn a handstand in hour or a week. โฃ Itโ€™s going to take at the best take, 3 to 6 months. โฃ But more likely 6 months to a year.โฃ That is assuming you are consistent and have the correct drills. โฃ โฃ Lastly I always say this but when did anyone pick up a skill or loose weight or get shredded or get strong in an hour or week? โฃ โฃ Yeah...never. โฃ โฃ So when you set yourself a time frame to get your handstand, if it is in 3 months, reconsider your time frame. Give yourself a year.โฃ โฃ Best case scenario you learn it way faster and get it 3 months and hey that would be awesome! โฃ โฃ Worst case you take a year but because you where realistically with your time frame. It wasnโ€™t as frustrating.โฃ โฃ So you win both ways.โฃ โฃ

Changing up the tuck. This is for individuals who have got comfortable on holding a two handed handstand. The tuck is building block for most strength work for a handstand. I am not going to go into detail of why the tuck is great that is for another day. Just know it is important and if you aren't working it, start doing them. But just holding a tuck can get a tad boring and so these are two drills that I use to switch it up a bit. Yes, it is still going to a tuck. The first being the fast down and then real slow back up. This is great for seeing if you can catch the tuck quickly, the slow back to full is a great endurance and focus test. The second being real slow down and fast back up (Yes, I should have gone down much slower). This is great for dynamic and explosive handstand drills such as hops. it will also force your hands to correct really fast when you are popping out of the tuck. This concept isnโ€™t new and @handstandfactory chat about it on their podcast. If you arenโ€™t listen to them do you even handstand? Give them a bash! Tag me if you do.

Balance point drill. This is one of my favourite drills to give to people once balance has started happen. It removes the frustration of momentum generated by the kick up and gives you the chance just to focus on the balance aspect of the handstand. Do NOT attempt this drill if you are scared of falling as especially in the beginning as this drill can be scary. How to do this drill: 1) Walk up the wall till you are roughly a foot away. (Like everything the distance away from the wall, will vary from person to person being a foot away is the general approach but you might/should play around to find what works for you) 2) Push tall through the shoulders and bring the weight in your hands to the first line of knuckles. You would do this by taking your shoulders forward slightly i.e. towards your fingers. 3) bring your hips over your shoulders and then take one leg out. If this is done correctly your weight should just float off the wall. 4) Fight with your hands to keep the balance. 5) fall, rest and repeat. This is a drill that I use in my classes and in person training so if you find trying to replicate these instructions challenging or are scared about falling, join my handstand class on a Thursday to learn!

Classic gymnastic core drills. Great for building great core strength. Not so great for building strength in your handstand. Then why do gymnasts do them? Good question. Because they don't just kick to handstand and hold for time. They are passing through a handstand when they tumble, swing through a giant on rings or high bar/ uneven bars and parallel bars. Their bodies when doing these apparatus are consistently going from a hollow body to an arch to create momentum. They are also landing hard from their dismounts and tumbling passes. All of that needs a strong core in order for them to perform and not injury themselves. When you just want to stand on your hands for a length of time, you need to just strengthen the main muscle groups that are being worked. In a handstand case this is your shoulders, traps and arms. Making these strong will improve your handstand. Obviously the best way to strengthen them for a handstand is to do handstand related strength drills. If you are looking to improve or strengthen up your handstand game. Currently take on 3 online clients. DM me "handstand" to get started.

Arched Handstand & Why it Happens. Volume 2 This is a typical banana handstand. It comes from two main things. Yes, once again it is not core related! The first being, tight shoulders. If you have tight shoulders you will not be able to stack your hips above your shoulders and your shoulders above your hands. In order to balance your shoulders will move forward slightly over your hands causing your lower back to arch to bring your legs more over your hands. The second reason, is that you don't have enough elevation strength in your upper back and shoulders. In order to balance your body will be forced to recruit other muscle groups. The chest and front deltoids, in order for this to happen the shoulders will come forward, over the hands and once again, cause the body to arch.

It is all in the hands! (I mean they are called HANDstands for a reason so the hint is in the title) The biggest reason you can't hold a handstand comes down to you not using your hands effectively. I see loads of other explanations given why people can't hold a handstand, core, line etc but generally (there are always exceptions) it comes down to not using the hands properly or even worse, not knowing how to. Honestly, I don't understand why this is a thing. Why are coaches not telling people how to use their hands?! (Obviously I know some do, this rant isn't for you) I have coached many people, not thousands for sure, but one of the things that always surprises me is when I start talking about how to use the hands and I get baffled looks. Even worse is when people have come from training with another "master hand balancer coach" (no names will be mentioned) and they have never been told to use their hands! If you want to learn to handstand and you go to a coach who doesn't teach you how to use your hands. Leave! They are wasting your time and taking your money.

Arched handstand & why it happens volume 1. Arched handstands or banana handstands get the whole "you must engage your core" treatment for you not to be in an arched handstand. Above is one example of an arched handstand. In this post I will be looking at the reason why it has happened. Spoiler alert *it is not core strength* The weight in my hands has traveled far over my hands. I.e it is sitting mainly in my fingers. I am squeezing my fingers hard in order not to fall over. This causes my body to arch in my attempt to save my balance. Trying to squeeze my core would not save this handstand. I would need to bring my weight back over to the middle/back of my hand. I would do this by squeezing hard with my fingers. If they couldn't squeeze hard enough I would fall. To summarise this arch is caused by my hands not being able to react fast enough to the weight above them. It moves to the danger zone of being mainly in the fingers, squeezing with the fingers causes the body to arch.

Falling. Falling and handstands go hand in hand (terrible pun I know). For some people, falling out of a handstand is just a nuisance and a cause of some great frustration and self verbal abuse. For others though, it is absolutely terrifying. Learning to fall though is a must if you want to learn to handstand. It is also quite easily learnt fortunately. Above is an example of falling safely, that I teach to beginners. This can be learnt online or in person. I have a class on Thursday at 6:30pm close to Clapham Junction station where you can learn how to fall and of course more importantly how to balance. DM "handstand Class" to book in. If you are not in London currently taking on some online clients DM to get details.

YOU CAN ALWAYS PUSH MORE! When I started learning to handstand (after the initial kick up frenzy) I started with YouTubing tips and tricks for handstands. Most of it was complete garbage (though as a beginner I did unfortunately listen to some of the BS.) One of the better tips was to push as much as you can through the shoulders. For beginners starting out this is a good que as most of the time you wonโ€™t be pushing enough. As you will simply lack the strength. After some time, the traps will develop enough strength to keep the shoulders elevated. Now for more experienced handstand practitioners keeping the shoulders by the ears the whole time is not necessary. As long as you have an adequate amount of push to keep yourself feeling light in your hands so that you can control your balance, that is all you need. Another thing to note (for intermediate practitioners) is how much push you have will also be person specific. Pushing so hard that it is consistently tiring is probably not a good idea but being to sunken in your shoulders isn't ideal ether. There will be a happy equilibrium for your body. You will just have to find it. If you are beginner and need some help on learning to handstand DM โ€œhandstandโ€ to get started.

Headstand vs Handstand what's the difference. Something I often hear. "I can do a headstand but I can't do a handstand" Ok so there are some similarities between the two and these are them. 1. Both require you to go upside down. 2. They both have "stand" in their names. Thats where the similarities end. Headstands are much easier to balance due to your base of support being your head and your hands/forearms in a form of a triangle on the floor. This makes it much easier to balance. In a handstand your base of support is your arms and hands that are parallel to each other on the floor. Your hands have to consistently catch and adjust your weight above them in order for you to stay up. This makes it much harder to balance. Obviously there is nothing wrong with doing headstands and if you have never been upside down before it can be a good starting point. However they in no way shape or form will make you be able to do a handstand. Handstands are a completely different skill. Handstands are much harder to learn but not impossible, if you wish to move from a headstand to a handstand I have some spots open for coaching DM "handstand" to get started.

Where should your weight be in your hands? First off, your weight is going to constantly move in your hands as this is part of balancing a handstand. For beginners, I generally suggest that you want your weight in the front of your hand by the first line of knuckles (the dark grey line) . This will make it easier to use your fingers and in the beginning (for most people) this is what you will struggle with. As time goes on and you start to understand how the weight moves in your hand you will find that you start to balance more to the back of your hand (the black line). The under balance game (using your palm like you would use your heel to rock on the floor) is where for most people will stay for the rest of the handstand journey. You never want to much weight in your fingers (the light grey line) as you are just using them to push yourself back onto your palm. If your weight goes over to the red dotted line. You are falling already. Save yourself! Learning to use your hands correctly and effectively is not an easy process. Having a coach speeds this up and avoids mistakes. Currently taking on new clients DM me "handstand" to start.

The Handstand pyramid. This is purely my opinion. Happy to discuss other peoples/coaches views on learning to handstand. This is how I coach and view handstands. A foundation of how to balance must be built. I do not worry at this point about how the handstand looks etc as long as balance is being learnt. Once a consistent balance has been built. We add on to it, shapes first then transitions. If line work is needed or wanted then that too. From there, the world of handstands is pretty much your oyster (assuming you are still prepared to work hard, though for most people if you have got to this point you will have been working hard.) You can focus on whatever you want. Press, Mexican etc. Once again this is my view would love to know if your approach is different you can DM or let me know in the comments.

The hopeless kick up Feel like you are just kicking up and nothing is happening? The big thing when doing kick ups is that most people have, is the โ€œkick up, hope and prayโ€ practice. (The first three attempts here) This is not only frustrating but also doesnโ€™t really teach you (the practioner) anything. A better way to look at a kick up is make sure you have a good push in the hands and when you are doing the kick up and feel the weight in your hands the whole time. This will tell you where your body is in the air. Which will then give you more understanding of why you are going over or not getting up. (you can also totally and should do this if you are still kicking up to the wall) As you can see at the end of the video I have a firm push into the floor and I can feel the weight in my hands the whole time as I kick up. As my weight gets above my hands I can then start to use them to balance. There are more aspects to the kick up than just the push and it is by far the most frustrating part of learning to hold a handstand. If you like to know more of how to get you kick up solid. DM me "Handstand" to get started.

How long does it take to get to thirty seconds? The most asked question. Honestly this depends (I know, not an answer most people want to hear). These are the main variables in my opinion that cause the time frame to shift down. 1) Dancer or gymnastic background. The body awareness gained from doing this dramatically speeds up the learning curve. 2) High work ethic. This one is so obvious but often just not done. Handstands can and at times will be a grind. The people who just put their head down and do the work instead of worrying about when they will get the handstand always get it faster than the people worrying about when they will get it. 3) Understanding the fight. Some people are naturally better at fighting for their balance than others. I had a client who as soon as I explained what he had to do with his hands, he started to get short holds within a week after doing some drills. It didnโ€™t take him long to break the thirty seconds. He had no previous dance or gymnastic background and it purely came down to his ability to understand what he had to do with his hands faster than most people. Obviously, there are other reasons that can shorten the learning curve, these have just been my experience. One of the best ways speed up the progress is get a coach, currently I have some online spaces available if you want to get a handstand and hold it DM โ€œhandstandโ€ to get started.

Frustration Friday (and a possible way to deal with it). Handstands are frustrating. That is fact, and no matter what level you get to they still remain frustrating as you can see by this video. Most people when they start are not aware of how frustrating they can be (partly due to social media as people do not post their fails.) Once down the path, reality sets in. There are days you walk in do the drills and they feel great everything just works and you feel like soon you will be smashing the holds you want. Then there are days that are just terrible. Nothing works. The rage sets in and you left cursing the floor and questioning your life choices. I have done this many times. But it never helps your training and often it just makes it worse. Personally what helped me and it wonโ€™t help everyone is when having a bad day just to be like โ€œhey, ok this day will be bad, get through the sets you need to do and just go homeโ€ or sometimes "ok your done, just go home". Accepting that it is ok to have bad days makes them much more bearable. (that doesn't mean I don't have days where I rage, I do, but the tantrum is short lived and I move on with my life, most of the time.) There are of course many reasons handstands can be frustrating but one of the most frustrating things about it is if you donโ€™t know exactly what to practice. If you want to take the guessing game out and have a structured program that will get you results. DM me โ€œhandstandโ€ to get started.

Handstand Jams! Handstand jams for me this is one of the best parts of coaching handstands. Getting a group of people together outside and just being upside. Just for shits and giggles. Handstand training can be a very lonely practice it is just you and the floor. But with the jams we all get together have laugh, share our frustrations with the practice and of course do more handstands. If you find training handstands a lonely practice, it doesnโ€™t have to be DM me โ€œhandstand Clanโ€ to join the upside-down world.
