El “lobo sin una pata”, #NicolasCage. #DannyAiello, #OlympiaDukakis y #VincentGardenia completaron el magnífico elenco bajo el comando de #NormanJewison. Las actuaciones son uno de los puntos fuertes de esta peli. Pero lo otro que se metió a la gente en el bolsillo fue el guion del dramaturgo #JohnPatrickShanley. Según él, hubo tres motores a la hora de escribir: Primero, el deseo de retratar una familia funcional. Y cuando dice “funcional” lo dice a pesar de sus errores y contradicciones. En segundo lugar, la situación personal de verse rodeado en su círculo social por varias treintañeras con un dilema: Todas tenían un enamorado, pero también tenían otro tipo que les gustaba más (quizás en su imaginación) al que nunca pudieron tener. ¿Debían conformarse con el enamorado fácil y seguro o debían esperar por ese hombre “ferpecto” que las volvía locas y no llegaba? El tercer motor fue su interés por esas personas encargadas de “desencantar” a otras. Esos que dicen: “Sé práctico, realista, pon los pies en la tierra y deja de soñar con pajaritos preñados.” John estaba claro que en la vida hay mil improbables que pueden impedir que realices tus sueños, pero el consejo de una persona diciéndote que aterrices no es uno de ellos. Si la vida se encarga de ponérsela difícil a la mayoría, ¿por qué no dejar que (en la ficción al menos) los personajes consigan lo que quieren? #Moonstruck se convirtió en éxito de taquilla. Ganó tres #Oscars, uno para Cher, otro para Dukakis y otro para el guionista que poco después escribiría también la exitosísima obra, #Doubt. A mi me gusta mucho esta peli. Luc Besson's 1994 crime classic has been on my watchlist for years, due to its iconic status in the world of cinema, as well as its high ratings on the major review sites. I therefore had pretty high expectations for it, although, I had also heard hints of negativity about certain aspects of the film - more on that later. The music choices in the film were a very mixed bag. I thought some of them fitted just about perfectly with the feel and tone of the film, while others, particularly at the start of the film, felt inharmonious and distracting. The story was intriguing and relatively exciting for what it was. It's definitely not the most unique story anymore, although I realise that the film is now thirty years old, and it would have felt a fair bit more original back then. But there in lay the main, glaring issue I had with the film. There was a growing level of discomfort I felt watching the film, in the way the relationship between the two protagonists was presented. It wasn't every scene, but there were a fair few times where it felt very uncomfortable to watch. I did read that the relationship was based on Besson's real life relationship with Maïwenn Le Besco, whom he dated when he was 32 and she was just 15. Learning this completely recontextualises how one views the film and the relationship between the protagonists. It makes it downright disturbing, honestly. The film's lead; Jean Reno, gave a pretty mixed performance, in my view. I found his acting either excellent or substandard, which was kind of symptomatic of the film as a whole. Brilliant moments, spread amongst relative mediocrity. Other actor performances are on the FIR Blog and Letterboxd. Overall, this wasn't a bad film, on the contrary, I enjoyed many parts of it, however, it certainly wasn't what I was hoping for or expecting. Furthermore, the concerning context and thematic undertones of the story left a sour taste in my mouth and solidified the notion that I will never watch this film again. Between Love Lies Bleeding and other noir-ish films I’ve checked out lately, I’m feeling like revisited some of the hyper-violent and hyper-stylized movies from the 90’s that probably aged in a wide variety of ways. I recall thinking 2 Days in the Valley was an interesting post-Tarantino movie whenever I watched it, so that’s at the top of my rewatch list.
