Wasn’t sure how 20 road miles this Saturday was going to feel. Especially after a tough training session on the Friday. But actually, I didn’t feel much from the day before. And even on the Sunday I didn’t feel too stiff or sore. One thing I have noticed since I have made the changes with my nutrition is how quickly I recover. I don’t get the same soreness or fatigue as I used to. And am managing to train more at the moment than ever before. Which is comforting as I work towards the 100km in June. Will be building on distance over the coming weeks through a mixture of road and trail running. The road will be more due to convenience than anything else and while is definitely less specific will help with fitness. May is a busy month for trips away, weddings and a pending house move so convenience will trump specificity at times. Having said that I will be making sure I get some longer trail runs in too, just less frequent. 7 weeks until the 100km and 3 months until the 100 miler. 3 fun facts about ultra trail running that I didn’t know about until my first challenge: 1️⃣ I didn’t know that I would loose toe nails, that it doesn’t hurt when they fall off and that they look different when they grow back 🙃 2️⃣ I didn’t know that would see so many bare backsides behind trees during an ultra challenge…but if you think about it, it’s actually not so surprising 🌳🚾😉😂🤭🤷‍♀️ 3️⃣ People seriously have business calls whilst running an ultra 😳📱 I guess it’s the ultimate test to see if you’re running in your zone 2 😂 What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen during a running challenge?😅 ❕PS: If you also want to tap into the incredible world of trail running or perhaps even ultra running, let’s chat! Flower therapy 2024 Part 120: Most of us probably think of jungles and forests as wild, disorganised, chaotic places, and man made gardens as places of order - every plant exactly where it should be. Well what if I told you the opposite is actually true? What if I told you that forests and jungles and other wild places are actually incredible places of order with strict systems and processes, everything growing in the right place, everything supporting all other life in the forest. Gardens on the other hand exist only because humans choose which plants to grow, and they don’t always grow well together. While it might sound too incredible to be true, it is. Take one or two plant or animal species away from a forest ecosystem, and the whole system fails, because everything has a job to do. State 34: Kentucky ☑️ In case there was any confusion, this contraption is not a PR bell but rather just a fun prop that I wanted to get my pic with after the race 😎 My body hasn’t been feeling great so enjoying the experience was the only goal for this race. And that I did! The @kyderbyfestival was a fun one and I thoroughly enjoyed my short time in Louisville (definitely need to go back) 👌🏼 Left hip + calf flared up and my right knee has decided it would like to join the party too 🙄 And while the multiple stops I needed to make because of it was frustrating, it didn’t derail me and I’m proud of how I finished strong, how I fueled, and where my fitness is at despite all the ups + downs with my training. What a fabulous morning with these ladies! Finalizando ciclo 1/semana 3 🏃🏽‍♀️ Se supone que en esta semana aumentará volumen (tiempo de carrera en mi caso). Algunos días lo logre y otros no🥵 Como mujeres nuestro rendimiento no es igual al de los hombres, nuestras hormonas fluctúan mucho a lo largo del mes. Y esos días pre y menstruación podemos sentirnos mas cansadas y fatigadas. Early this week we talked about taper week - what can happen and what to expect (spoiler alert, not a good night of sleep). It’s important to sleep the few days before race eve and focus on good hydration so you are ready to go on race morning (especially if conditions are expected to be hot). . Of course you train hard for a great result. If you follow your race plan, 9 times out of 10 you’ll have at least a solid day. Ultimately what you want is a day that is a reflection of your fitness. Some days things click, some days they don’t. . Races will never be perfect. There will always be ups and downs and lessons to glean. No matter what, try to go into your races with a positive attitude and spend as much of the day thinking positively as you can. Sometimes a positive mantra or self-talk can help turn your race around. Sometimes it at least helps you get to the finish line. When all else fails count your steps 😂 No matter what, don’t give up, and keep fighting for every second that you can. 🌟 La @petzltrailplus 2024 50km 🎖🥉 07:52:34 ⛰️🏃‍♀️ El proceso no ha sido fácil pero estamos en camino, años aprendiendo de errores y experiencias, compaginando un trabajo sedentario (8 horas programando 🧠👩‍💻), mi familia, afrontando enfermedades, con horas de mucho volumen de entrenamiento, trabajo de fuerza 🏋‍♀️, estudios 📚 (hace un año empecé a estudiar entrenamiento deportivo, nutrición, trabajo preventivo, etc), prueba error, simulaciones, visualizaciones (psicologia deportiva), un trabajo integral que no solo implica correr pero que ha valido la pena porque me gusta hacer las cosas bien. Sali conservadora porque venia con molestia de una sobrecarga en la pierna izquierda, de la tension mis pantorrillas se pusieron muy duras los dias previos, la mente se ponía de manifiesto con dudas y miedos mostrándome que todavia me falta trabajar en ello, arriesgar un poco más y confiar en mi porque el trabajo ya estaba hecho y me di cuenta a medida que pasaba los kms que me sentía fuerte logrando remontar algunos puestos en los 20km restantes. Best running shoes with a wider toe box. BUT here’s something that might come as a shock: Wide toe box running shoes and running shoes for wide feet are not the same thing. I'll pause for that to sink in. Wide shoes have expanded width across the shoe (from the heel all the way to the toe box), while wide toe box shoes are normally sized throughout with the exception of the toe box, which is larger. “Trust the work…” 🛠️ . . . Things went well today. I had the goal of getting a course PR— and I did just that. I’ll still have more to share, but for now: There was a lot of growth that happened here in this training cycle, and while I was out on the course this morning— and in reality none of it had to do with numbers. I’ve been stuck for years, no progress, some backwards progress lol— again not just talking only about the numbers. When I say that it’s the first training cycle in a looong time where the hard felt good I mean it. It’s the first time in a long time where a race has felt good, and with the month I’ve been having— that’s a lot. As the great @des_linden once said #keepshowingup ❤️‍🔥 I lean on these words a lot. This cycle and this race have shown that there’s still more left, and I can’t wait to find how much more. Because I do love the grind, and the work, and sometimes we are fortunate enough that it shows up on race day. @teamrunrun @poolerunninglab out in full force this morning at the @eugenemarathon ! We had some amazing times, and the culmination of some great training blocks ! Superman PRL Elite @julien.r.andre decided one marathon wasn’t enough for April and went for his 2nd today! He Ran 2:43:50 for the full, finishing 69th OA and 10th in 40-44 age group! Next up was @opochtli running his first half marathon! He was able to complete in 2:13:36, averaging 10:12 mile pace and running negative splits through out! He wasn’t the only first timer today, as his wife @myrnanp714 completed her first half today as well! The goal was to finish the race , and she finished under 3 hours and had a great kick at the end! Official time was 2:57:52, averaging 13:35 per mile!! Super proud of all of these athletes! I’m a big fan of tune-up races especially before a Marathon. Due to scheduling conflicts over the last few years, I wasn’t able to get a Half Marathon on the calendar but this year the stars aligned for the timing of the Niagara Falls USA Half Marathon and its placement with the Buffalo Marathon. Part of why I’m a big on tuneup races along with countless articles and coaches is that it serves as a great opportunity to get a feel for race day; get your adrenaline and focus much more dialed in than a training run, dress rehearsal and you’ll likely generate a better quality workout in the process. I had an absolute blast running this thing. Full disclosure, I didn’t look at the elevation gain and had to chuckle after I realized it was all uphill for the first 3-4 miles but it was and out and back. This made it interesting because I was going at a much harder effort than I normally would between miles 6-9, knowing that I had a tailwind and a downhill to carry me to the finish. The course rewarded patience and running smart and strategic. I’ve also run many races and rarely am I around such a relaxed and calm RD before the start of the race. I’ll be emphasizing this race with my athletes next year. Thanks @paulbeattyjr ! If you’re coming out of a de-load or back from extended time off at the gym - you need to know it’s more important to take it easy and pull back in weight a little than it is to pop right back into what you were doing before you took down time. Quality movement is more important than lifting with your ego. You’re likely going to have DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Your body will need a week or so to adapt to lifting again. Muscle memory will kick in though and you’ll be in a strong position again soon. There’s no need to rush things.

Illness gone 🤒 now time to get stuck into 4 weeks of specificity. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up a bit, get out on the TT bike and get that first proper run off the bike done which is always an enlightening experience after the off season. I’ve been consistent with the swimming 🏊 , made progress on the bike and the run… well it’s not where I would have liked it to be right now but we’re getting there slowly but surely 🏃 Making improvements in 3 sports at the same time ain’t easy and takes a lot of hard work, patience, discipline and dedication. Because of that I’ve got a lot of respect for anyone that does this sport! Any improvement for me at the first race or the season is a success. If things don’t go well, we review, look at how we can do things better and go again. 2 weeks ago - Manchester marathon 2:38:52. I've wanted to get sub 2:40 for ages, and sitting at 2:42 - 2:43 each time recently. So what changed..... First off, perfect weather, always helps✅ Second, my old hip injury has always meant some of the original carbons were too unstable. Tried Adidas adiós pro 3, increased stability meant a carbon I can race in ✅ Third, no alcohol between Xmas and the race✅ Great training block - no illness, no injuries. 12 weeks running 96k per week, cycle to work 3 days a week and 2 x strength sessions✅ I kept my training specific to the marathon discipline. My speed work was all km reps/ mile reps, not exciting, but it meant I was training my cadence and stride length to the marathon. I've always done my long runs at a decent pace, but increased the number of kms I was trying to run at MP. I also did a few long runs on Saturday's, running for 80 mins pre parkrun, doing parkrun, and trying to keep a strong pace after. Outside of my long run and my speed work, a fair bit of my other runs were slower than in the past. Races in the lead in? Helsby half 1:18, Trafford 10k 34:58 and Trimpell 20 mile 2:03 in windy conditions. 3 parkruns. That was it. I wanted to ensure I didn't compromise the rest of my plan with loads of other races. Nutrition? Increased protein intake, especially on harder days, tough as I don't eat much meat. I also reduced my carb intake further on the Monday and Tuesday in race week, allowing the carb load to work well. Beetroot shot each day in race week. Maurten 320 Saturday, 160 Sunday morning.✅ Race day - 2 X beetroot shots at 6am. Fuelled more, 2 normal Maurten, 2 Maurten caffeine, including 1 at 21k, and 2 half gels. ✅ Ran with a couple of runners from 16k onwards. Focused on HR, took any tram bridge carefully. Average heart rate 155. Steady HR + Adidas Pro 3 + extra fuel meant 32k in 2 hrs and felt great. Great mental state so pushed hard, best back 10k ever. ✅ Learns - more MP in long runs, focus on HR, don't skimp on nutrition, only run with a group of you know their goal. My weekend in 10 photos: Saturday – running through the fields: Yet again, I must say that running my favourite route clockwise simply isn't the same thing. Next time back to my beloved counterclockwise route 🥰 Sunday – gym workout: Because of my runclub tomorrow, I ditched leg training and focused on my upper body, ie hips, core, arms, shoulders. After my usual choice of machines (eg rowing, chest press, triceps, shoulder press), I did a round of bodyweight exercises: - front and side planks, - squat variations, - pushups on the knees, - bridges with weights, - kettlebell lunges, - dead lifts, - Russian twist, - several Pilates exercises (criss cross, scissors, knee drops) - balancing on a half bosu ball Rounded the whole thing off with a thorough stretch. A big congratulations to our athlete Tiffany for PRing her half marathon yesterday! Tiffany ran a 1:55 half marathon January 1st, and in four months, took 24s per mile off her average mile pace! During the last four months, Tiffany followed an intermediate @pallas.io running training plan tailored to her half marathon goal. After her half marathon in January, we first increased Tiffany’s running volume through a Z2, easy run block followed by a Z3 block. These were paired with our general prep and strength endurance lifting phases. From there, we added in targeted speed work through threshold-focused workouts as well as our lifting peaking protocol before tapering for her race. Tiffany also worked 1:1 with Coach @meganmarkoff on her nutrition during this time. One of the biggest shifts she experienced was realizing how much her diet needed to change to support her running goals, as well as how important food is to not only fuel her workouts, but to stay healthy and recover from training too. Mukana oli myös @sauconysuomi Itse juoksin 6:30 min/km vauhtia etenevän ryhmän mukana, jonka kanssa tuli taivallettua noin 14 kilometriä. Yhteinen tavoitteemme Helsinki City Running 11.5. on kahden viikon päästä. Jos et ole vielä ilmoittautunut, mutta haluaisit tulla, niin mulla löytyy ilmaiskoodi. Kerro mille matkalle olisit tulossa, ja minkä vuoksi antaisin koodin juuri sulle. Kaksi reippainta vauhtiryhmää juoksivat 90 min lenkin 5:45- ja 6:30- kilometrivauhdein. Rauhallisinta vauhtia etenevä ryhmä juoksi tunnin lenkin noin 7min/km -vauhtia. Itse olin mukana tässä jälkimmäisessä ryhmässä. Juoksimme noin 8,5 km. @gcm_toledo in the books! This was a great course and a fun time, despite some weather that was less than ideal. We had humidity, we had rain, and we had fun! I’ll celebrate a PR, but it’s frustrating to know I can run faster. My 22-24 mile training plans are proof of that! For some reason, I keep getting stomach cramps during races that I can’t replicate during training, despite utilizing the same nutrition/hydration plan. Guess I’ll have to keep trying until I figure it out? I got lots of compliments on the @chicknlegsrunning Choccy Cows singlet and Dino shorts. It seems silly posting this when it is 40 degrees and raining outside currently. But, yesterday it was 75 degrees and humid for my long run and man…did it feel tough. It’s easy to beat yourself up as the season changes and things start heating up. Paces naturally get slower, breathing gets more labored, and your legs start to feel weighed down and sluggish. This is all normal. If you’re like me and spent the last few months running in the frozen tundra, adjusting to warmer temps and bright sunshine will take time. Or, if you live in southern climates and have been used to running in mild temperatures, it can be a total shock to all of a sudden be running in soupy humidity. So, don’t be too hard on yourself if your running doesn’t feel like going well as we head into summer. About yesterday… Over 80 schools, 3500 athletes competed at the Middle School State meet. Man did our athletes show up! They poured their hearts into this meet and left it all on the track. As a coach and runner I was in awe. Several podium, many new PR’s, and core memories. Counting down the days until I’m back on this track (and running with a tan 🫶🏼) This last week: Monday - 40mins easy run Tuesday - Rest day Wednesday - 35mins easy run Thursday - Upper body in the gym Friday - 35mins easy run Saturday - Throwdown at BMA Sunday - 50mins easy run Still very low volume for me!
