Do you ever find yourself wishing Sylvia Plath had written more novels or novellas? I certainly do! Her stories always resonate deeply with me. I initially thought The Bell Jar was her only novel work besides her poetry, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover Mary Ventura and The Ninth Kingdom (which almost didn’t see the light of day due to publishers). This short story, around 40 pages, is about various themes such as destiny, life, motivation, capitalism, and even mental illness—so much allegory to unpack here, and it becomes even more impactful and poignant when you know that Plath would attempt suicide just months after writing it. I can’t help but wish she had penned more novels/novellas like this. 😔 Mary Ventura and The Ninth Kingdom Ratings: 5 🌟 [quotes on the next slides] #MaryVenturaandTheNinthKingdom #SylviaPlath #SylviaPlathQuotes #BookRecomendation #Classics #ShortStory

How about a mini photo dump, a couple mini reviews and one handsome boy— I finished ‘The Lying Life of Adults’ by Elena Ferrante at the start of this month and I enjoyed it. It’s a great exploration of coming of age and trying to understand who your parents actually are, while becoming your own person. I found all of the characters maddening most of the time but extremely endearing at others. You know how it goes, Ferrante can just write dynamic, upsetting plots and intimate portraits so well. I also just did a one sitting listen to the short story ‘Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom’ by Sylvia Plath. It’s a whimsical, albeit unsettling, tale of a girl who boards a train and uncovers the truth of her journey. It’s an allegory for life and being part of that machine and a desire to escape it. Sad implications as you might imagine but quite good and well worth a read. I wish I owned a copy of my own! tags| #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #sylviaplath #thelyinglifeofadults #elenaferrante #bookreview #cat

🌹 Traduzione meravigliosa di @silviapareschi1 #sylviaplath #maryventura #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #mondadori #mademoiselle #rosso #nero #azzurro #grafica #racconto #book #bookworm #instagood #readinglist #lettura #ioleggoperché #comeariel #bookstagramitalia #ioleggoperché #ioleggo #comeariel #leggere #leggerechepassione #leggerefabene #leggeresempre

🌟 (Mini) Book Review 🌟 Imagine being so famous as a writer that one day people are desperate to read even your undergraduate short stories because at least it’s new material from you. Such is the legacy of Sylvia Plath. Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom is no Bell Jar, but it is a fascinating little peek into the themes and concerns that Plath would have as a writer that would carry throughout her career: rebellion, female agency, etc. I could almost picture this story as a devastatingly creepy little short film. In fact, someone should work on that! Is this her best story? No. But it was nice to have a taste of Sylvia Plath in my afternoon today.

A few days ago I was looking for a short audiobook to listen to while cooking, saw “Mary Ventura and The Ninth Kingdom” by Sylvia Plath in my audiobook app and decided to give it a try. I had only ever read The Bell Jar by this author before, but I’ve been wanting to read more of Plath for a while. Mary Ventura and The Ninth Kingdom is a short story about a train ride that she apparently wrote for a university class. The whole story is somewhat surreal and metaphorical and mostly deals with the topic of leaving home. It partly felt similar to Murakami’s writing to me, though definitely more American. I did not enjoy the beginning that much, because the writing felt a little stiff, as if she was trying very hard to never use the same verb twice, but as it progresses, the language feels more natural and flows better, and I loved the ending and overall vibe, so I gave it 4/5⭐️

RM 20.00 Mary Ventura And The Ninth Kingdom By Sylvia Plath . . New Paperback * with defect * . . . Faber Stories, a landmark series of individual volumes, presents masters of the short story form at work in a range of genres and styles. Lips the colour of blood, the sun an unprecedented orange, train wheels that sound like ‘guilt, and guilt, and guilt’: these are just some of the things Mary Ventura begins to notice on her journey to the ninth kingdom. ‘But what is the ninth kingdom?’ she asks a kind-seeming lady in her carriage. ‘It is the kingdom of the frozen will,’ comes the reply. ‘There is no going back.’ Sylvia Plath’s strange, dark tale of independence over infanticide, written not long after she herself left home, grapples with mortality in motion. . . #UlatBuku #BookLoverMalaysia #PencintaBuku #Bookstagram #OnlineBookstore #OnlineBookstoreMalaysia #BookstoreKL #Bookstore #BookLover #BookstoreMalaysia #BookLoversMalaysia #MalaysiaBookstore #Buku #JualBuku #BukuMurah #BukuImport #JualanBuku #BukuSecond #BukuPreloved #BukuOnline #SayaJualBuku #BacaBuku #bibliophilemy #malaysiamembaca #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom 100523

40 pages of the simplest writing with so many possible interpretations. A never ending allegory. Every time I read it, I find a new lens. Plath’s work is sometimes difficult for me to read because of how easy it is to get so emotionally invested in her pain, her mistreatment, her misdiagnoses, her art that was ahead of its time. The shit end of the stick I felt she got out of society. This story, a work of fiction, was denied publishing when it was initially written in 1952. She did try to revise it to make it less “sinister” but it ended up going unfinished. It finally got its flowers in 2019 when Harper published it. I read it for a feminist fiction class during my master’s program and instantly viewed it as commentary on societal expectations placed on women, the pressure to conform, and the consequences of resistance. But now, I’m all like, is this just universally existential? Is it about the human experience and the search for meaning? The unknown that we face on the journey? Does the train symbolize life? Society? And why the number 9? I’m not sure, but that’s why I love it, and her, so much. #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #shortstoriesofinstagram #fifthavenue

💫💫💫 . 🏷: #maryventuraochdetniondekungariket #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #maryventura #januaryreads #booksof2024 #winterbooks #winterreads #2024books #bookstagram #bookstagramsverige #goodreads

‘Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams’ (1977), ‘Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom’ (2019) as well as the children’s stories ‘The Bed Book’ (1976), ‘The It-Doesn’t-Matter Suit’ (1996) and ‘Mrs Cherry’s Kitchen’ (2021) and, of course, ‘The Bell Jar’ (1963) are the only fiction pieces by Sylvia Plath published so far. However, there is so much more stored in the archives that the brilliant Peter K. Steinberg (the co-editor of ‘The Letters of Sylvia Plath: Volume 1 & 2’ and the founder of sylviaplathinfo.blogspot.com) has been transcribing and collecting over the past years and the book we all have been waiting for will be finally published on 5 September 2024: ‘The Collected Prose of Sylvia Plath’! 800 pages!! 🥳 And it’s also finally available for preorder on Amazon! I found it on amazon.co.uk/.de/.fr./.es! The ISBN is: 978-0571377640 “The Collected Prose stands alongside the Journals (2000) and the two volume Letters (2017 and 2018) to support a more complete understanding of Sylvia Plath’s ambition and achievement as a writer. Expanding on the selection published as Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams (1977), this volume draws together all of Sylvia Plath’s shorter prose, much of which is previously uncollected and unpublished. The volume embraces her experiments with the short story and pieces of non-fiction from the 1940s through to her more polished compositions of the fifties and early sixties, including fragments of fiction as well as her journalism and book reviews. Themes and associations become apparent as the volume offers new, intertextual ways of reading across Plath’s oeuvre, colouring and shading our understanding and appreciation of her extraordinary talent.” What makes me particularly sad is the thought of the lost drafts of two novels she was working on, ‘Falcon Yard’ which told the story of an American Cambridge student meeting her British lover and ‘Double Exposure’ about the end of her marriage. Damn, I bet those would have been brilliant! We can only hope that one day they will reappear, if they still exist! Till then, let’s look forward to next year! #sylviaplath #thecollectedproseofsylviaplath #thebelljar #peterksteinberg

Before there was The Bell Jar, there was a young Sylvia Plath, college student and avid writer, still trying to make a name for herself. When Plath submitted Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom to Mademoiselle, despite having won the magazine’s writing prize prior, the 50 page story was rejected. It was only in 2019 that it finally saw print in its original form. While some have categorized this story as “juvenalia,” or a piece one writes as they discover themselves as a writer, I was struck by the beautifully vague symbolism. Mary is placed on a train by her parents, despite her trepidations, which speeds along to the Ninth Kingdom, a destination that neither Mary nor readers fully comprehend. Plath’s pages drip with tactile and visual details, painting the train as a lush and red prison. As the passengers approach their destination, a sage (in color and wisdom) rider begins to drop ominous hints that the Kingdom may not be as good as it sounds, but riders often lose the fight to flee as they approach. Mary, in her last chance for freedom has to decide if she will flee the train, or continue on to the predetermined end. What I love about this story is its intentional vagueness. You can place about any meaning on the Ninth Kingdom and on the train that you wish. Is the Kingdom death? Adulthood? A particular career path or life role imposed on one by their parents or society? It can be any of these. This story makes me wish Plath had been with us long enough to come to the height of her artistic power. Even her early works amaze me.

• • • #booksofinstagram #bok #book #bookstagram #böcker #bokrecension #bokrecensioner #modernistaförlag #readeveryday #readersofig #läsa #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #read #reading #booktok #booknerd #booklover #booklove #bookish #booknerd #loveit #lovereading

. . . #leiamais #leiamulheres #leiamaismulheres #defendaolivro #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #maryventuraeononoreino

hello, hello! mary ventura and the ninth kingdom is a short, daunting allegory. I was initially skeptical how plath would pull this off with only forty pages, but was pleasantly surprised by how she dropped subtle hints all throughout and left the rest to the reader’s imagination. it’s one of those stories that gets better the next time around. and I did read it again, taking note of the details I missed the first time. it’s better not to give away much about this book and let you experience firsthand the fate of this peculiar train ride. overall, 4/5 🌟 also, thanks to yurie (@breatheyurie) for tagging me in the #ifiwere challenge. ❦ if I were a book - this feels like a trick question, and I spent a good hour thinking about it—to no avail. so I’m gonna go ahead and say little women ❦ if I were a book quote - “perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything in the world understands it. perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul.” — frances hodgson burnett, a little princess ❦ if I were a book character(s) - I think I’m a bit like sara crewe, lara jean, and beth march ❦ if I were a drink - earl grey tea ❦ if I were a season - autumn (and yes, I did base it on my birth month) ❦ if I were a time of the day - 5:30 am ❦ if I were a color - lavender, maybe? it changes I felt challenged by this tag, alright. who would’ve thought I’d scour the internet for buzzfeed quizzes just to identify with a tea flavor 😭 nonetheless, this was plenty fun and I look forward to reading yours! all the love, m

B O O K   1 3 - MARY VENTURA AND THE NINTH KINGDOM by Sylvia Plath I love these little Faber short stories, and this one by a teenaged Sylvia Plath did not disappoint. After winning a writing competition for Mademoiselle magazine, she later submitted Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom to the publication, but it was refused - probably for being too dark for their readership's tastes. Indeed, this is an unsettling tale of a train journey forced upon young Mary Ventura (named after one of Plath's high school friends) whose parents are determined that she must leave home. They dispassionately pack her onto a train, with a ticket to 'the Ninth Kingdom'. As the train passes the other kingdoms, Mary begins to realise that her destination is not a hopeful one, and her resistance begins. So what is the Ninth Kingdom? Death? The oppression of women in American society? I'm not sure Plath wanted us to know but it's probably both. Having written this immediately after leaving home, Plath is clearly exploring feelings of rejection, restriction and doom. Another fantastic mini Faber to fill a sunny half hour in the garden! #sylviaplath #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #faberandfaber #faberstories #faberbooks #bookstagramuk #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #instareads #iread #readersofinstagram #iread  #feministliterature   #myreadingchallenge #bookish #booklove #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookaddict

Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom by Slyvia Plath "But remember, run, run like the wind..." Mary Ventura is forced to take a train ride by her parents. Reluctantly, she gets on and realizes many things that do not seem to fit or sit right. A woman travelling with her urges her to get off and run as far away as possible for the journey is a dangerous one. Will Mary get off and find her way? This gem of a story by Sylvia Plath is extremely precious and moving. Sylvia pens a deep message on how to trust your instincts and not give in to others. The metaphor behind Mary Ventura's parents pushing Mary towards the train is one such example of the resistance we face in our lives when it comes to searching for what we want, which may not always resonate with other people. This story itself was written not long after Sylvia herself had left home. Sylvia Plath is regarded as a poet and author way ahead of her time. I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. “Lips the colour of blood, the sun an unprecedented orange, train wheels that sound like guilt, and guilt, and guilt: these are just some of the things Mary Ventura begins to notice on her journey to the ninth kingdom. But what is the ninth kingdom?' she asks a kind-seeming lady in her carriage. It is the kingdom of the frozen will; comes the reply. There is no going back. Sylvia Plath's strange, dark tale of independence over infanticide, written not long after she herself left home, grapples with mortality in motion.” 🚂 #melacholic #mydearsylvia #mypersonallibrary #fantasy #biblioteca #bibliothek #bibliotecapessoal #livros #livrosemaislivros #livroseleitura #leituradefevereiro #bookdepository #februaryreads #februarybooks #readingchallenge2023 #65booksinayear #shortstories #maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #sylviaplath #faberstories

#maryventuraandtheninthkingdom #sylviaplath #literature #literatura #livro #livros #book #books #instalivros #instabook #instabooks #booksgram #bookstagram #bookslover #bookslovers #relogiodagua #relogiodaguaeditores

🚂 A Sylvia Plath mi sento molto legata. ❤️
