"Look at me! Everywhere I've turned somebody has wanted to sacrifice me for my good--only they were the ones who benefited. And now we start on the old sacrificial merry-go-round. At what point do we stop? Is this the new true definition, is Brotherhood a matter of sacrificing the weak? If so, at what point do we stop?" Wow, I'm going to be thinking about this one for a long time. Deserves to be up there with the likes of Melville and Joyce with its odyssey like exploration of self both within and outside of community. Shines a spotlight on racial, social, and economic politics in this country as relevant today as it was during Jim Crow. Ralph Ellison (March 1, 1913 – April 16, 1994) was an African-American writer, literary critic, and scholar best known for his novel Invisible Man, which won the National Book Award in 1953. He moved to New York City in 1936 to pursue a career in writing and quickly became involved in the cultural and political life of the city. While in New York, Ellison joined the Federal Writers' Project, a government program that employed writers to document the lives of Americans during the Great Depression. He encountered several artists who would significantly influence his life, including artist Romare Bearden and author Richard Wright. After Ellison wrote a book review for Wright, Wright urged him to take up fiction writing as a career. Ellison's first published story was "Hymie's Bull," a tale inspired by his 1933 experience of hoboing on a train with his uncle to reach Tuskegee. Ellison's best-known work, "Invisible Man," was published in 1952. The novel was awarded the 1953 US National Book Award for Fiction. He received two President's Medals, and a State Medal from France. Ellison received 12 honorary doctorate degrees from Tuskegee Institute, Rutgers University, the University of Michigan, and Harvard University. On February 18, 2014, the USPS unveiled a 91¢ stamp in tribute to Ralph Ellison. Riverside Park on 150th Street and Riverside Drive in Harlem (near 730 Riverside Drive, Ellison's principal residence from the early 1950s until his passing) was dedicated to Ellison on May 1, 2003. In the park stands a 15 by 8-foot bronze slab with a "cut-out man figure" inspired by his book Invisible Man. The monument was created by artist Elizabeth Catlett, a former resident of 409 Edgecombe Avenue, Harlem NY.

Ralph Ellison - Invisible Man Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison collaborated in the late 1940s and early 1950s, aiming to challenge stereotypes of African American life prevalent in mainstream media. Their first collaboration was the 1948 essay "Harlem Is Nowhere," focusing on the Lafargue Mental Hygiene Clinic. They later worked on "A Man Becomes Invisible," a story for Life magazine introducing Ellison's novel, "Invisible Man." Both projects aimed to raise awareness of the black experience in postwar America, particularly in Harlem. "Invisible Man" was Ellison's seminal novel, following an unnamed black protagonist from the South to Harlem, highlighting America's racial divisions and the protagonist's realization of his invisibility in both white and black cultures. Parks captured key Harlem scenes for "A Man Becomes Invisible," using various photographic styles that mirrored Ellison's prose, blurring the lines between realism and fantasy. Despite only four photos being published, Parks' archive suggests a larger, unrealized project. In summary, Parks and Ellison's collaborations sought to challenge stereotypes and bring attention to the African American experience in postwar America, particularly in Harlem, through photography and literature. Their work aimed to provoke meaningful change and shed light on racial injustices. #ralphellison #invisibleman #photography

Upon reading this book written in 1952 about racial identity and being black in America - it should come as no surprise that the plot and themes of this novel feel and relevant today. People with many more degrees have opined on this book in ways far better than I can, so if you're looking for a deep review - I recommend going elsewhere. But the main concept of the novel is the narrator's journey of discovering that he is invisible. Not in the sense of science fiction, but in the sense that he is black, and therefore, all he can ever be is a black man in a racist world. His thoughts, his attitudes, his achievements, his identity all take the backseat. Think of how often you've seen or heard: "He's smart... for a black man", "She's beautiful... for a black woman". And of course, there's the other narrative that confronts tragedy where: "He should have done what the cops told him to do", "She wouldn't have been killed if she wasn't dating a suspected drug dealer", I can go on and on because this country doesn't see people, it sees "black people". People's whose color of skin forces them into a box where they must conform or pay the severest consequences. And that's the whole point of the book - the narrator is searching for identity and aligning with groups that promise identity but end up using him like a cog in a wheel. The narration is jarring and unsettling because the narrator's experience is. Sure, you can say we're all invisible and as a white woman, I can only speak from my own experience. But, I can say that I haven't heard of unarmed white men and women being shot or choked in the middle of the street and the incident brushed away. #bookstagram #booklover #bookrecommendations #book #booktok #invisibleman #ralphellison

Today in Labor History April 16, 1994: Ralph Ellison died on this day. Ellison was a member of the Harlem Renaissance, best known for his book, The Invisible Man. He was friends with Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. He became active in the Communist Party, as did many of his peers. But he became disillusioned with them during World War II when he felt they became reformist. He wrote The Invisible Man during this era (published in 1952), in part, as a response their betrayal. But the book also looks at the relationship between black identity and Marxism, the reformism of Booker T. Washington, and issues of individuality and personal identity. #workingclass #LaborHistory #ralphellison #harlem #marxism #racism #communism #fiction #literature #books #author #writer #blackinstagram #bookstagram

#ralphellison #invisibleman #roman #literatur #lesen #buch #jeffwall #lektüre #lesetipp

Tell me a book you’ve been meaning to pick up but just never got around to. ‘I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.’ Defeated and embittered by a country which treats him as a non-being, the ‘invisible man’ retreats into an underground cell, where he smokes, drinks, listens to jazz and recounts his search for identity in white society: as an optimistic student in the Deep South, in the north with the black activist group the Brotherhood, and in the Harlem race riots. And explains how he came to be living underground . . . #books #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookish #bookcommunity #bookphotography #bookclub #bookcover #booknerd #bookcollector #bookworm #ralphellison #invisibleman #goodreads #literature #penguinmodernclassics #truckingatnight #fiction

I’m more than ambivalent regarding the concept of a “Great American Novel”, particularly since there are so many books from South and Central America and the Caribbean that I regard as great American novels, Canada even sneaks in a contender or two, but the recent responses to an article from the Atlantic had me thinking. My friend @bookish_texan made a list of 25 he would submit, and I pulled these off the shelves as a response. As I was selecting books, I realized that many fit within certain themes that I find important to US culture, past or present. Writers (and readers) have examined the concept of redemption either from a religious or humanist perspective, so I have volumes from Hawthorne, Hurston, Steinbeck, and Morrison. There is a deep strain of individualism in the US: the idea that anyone can become great, often mythical and drifting towards an arrogant sensibility but also morphing into the belief in conspiracy theories, so I selected volumes from Melville, Pynchon, DeLillo, and Johnson. The peculiar nature of legacy in the US with generational wealth but no titles of nobility is reflected in works by Alcott, Faulkner, Roth, and Matthiessen. (I grabbed my daughter’s copy of Little Women because she read it a few months ago and really enjoyed it. She’ll read my unabridged copy in a few years.) The previous two themes are put into stark relief by the terrifying sense of outright greed that hovers over so many generations of US society, so I selected books from Norris, Wharton, Hammett, and Gaddis. The horrifying twin legacies of slavery and violent oppression of Native Americans sent me to books by Toomer, Ellison, Butler, and Erdrich. Finally, I grabbed five books that subvert some aspect of the American Dream, so Hughes, Yates, Doctorow, LeGuin, and Vollmann are here. Swipe to see the books Brian selected. I did not want any duplicates, so his choices from Morrison, Faulkner, McCarthy, and Fitzgerald would likely have made my own list. What books would you pick? I’m thinking about the 25 I would select from outside the US, so that list may be coming soon.

I did my masters thesis on Ellison’s “Invisible Man” and remain indebted to and influenced by his writing and thinking to this day. I recommend this book. With thanks to journal editor Paul Devlin. #RalphEllison #photography #AfricanAmerican #photobook #race #culture

I may have screamed when I found ‘The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison’ in my mail this week. I have waited for this recently published paperback edition for three or four years. Patiently and not so patiently, depending on my mood. I read the introduction yesterday and wanted to dive straight into the letters, but I will finish the Beckett bio first. Soon, very soon, I will be starting my mornings with coffee and Mr. Ellison. The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison Edited by John F. Callahan & Marc C. Que livro!!! - simplesmente porque as pessoas se recusam a me ver.
