You know what I love? Volunteers. These are all plants that just decided to grow somewhere other than where I planted them. They’ve lasted through the winter with absolutely no help from me (accept knowing not to pluck them out of the ground). 1 - Cilantro/coriander 2 - Marigolds 3 - Fennel 4 - Snapdragons (which are everywhere, I just liked that this one is growing out of a crack in the cement)

My #coldcompost #compost bin volunteered a bunch of tomato plants, and one of them has started producing a bunch of cherry tomatoes! Fortunately, the plants aren't really in my way. I mean, they kind of are, but it's not that hard to work around them. I just pull the wagon up beside the plants, pick up a handful of whatever I'm depositing, and then throw it over the side. There's a small gap where I can stand and not be too far away, and I also dump my bucket of food scraps over the edge from that spot. But, yeah, it's not the ideal spot for them to be growing... I’m finding the coolest things are now popping up without my knowledge or help at all like this little beauty, good old Native American tobacco! I was really surprised to see this. Breadseed Poppy Pink Peony When you let poppies drop seed in your garden on their own they will do it and you will have many volunteers. Here is one. It’s mother seed was originally @floretflower I think this is the 3rd year it has reseeded in my garden. Interestingly enough they are blooming literally right after my pink peonies have finished. Honey-vine climbing milkweed - (Cynanchum laeve) volunteer. Vigorous and covered in blooms! This vine came up through an area I planted with wildflowers. It has come back two years now. I’ve learned a lot about it including that it is a host plant for the monarch butterfly. The monarch butterfly is endangered and this plant is also endangered in Pennsylvania. Nature has a way of coming back. If you let it grow she will grow what the wildlife needs. As monarchs are finding themselves in the spotlight, I worry about organizations like Monarch watch.org that provide recommended plant lists for monarchs that include not only non-native plants, but admittedly invasive plants. This is an unknown (to me) variety of viburnum that volunteered at the edge of the woods surrounding my yard.

Unexpected joy in the garden. I’ll take it. I’ve been trying to grow hollyhock flowers since I was in my 20s with no luck. I have no idea if this is a hollyhock or not, or who in the world planted it… but I’m in absolute love. So thankful I didn’t let the boys weed this when I paid them to help weed the “sun bed” as I like to call it. This is along my garage and greenhouse/hothouse wall. I have a pomegranate and two pineapple guavas on this side and the goal has been to fill this with flowers, eventually. I am a seed starter, though, so I don’t get 💯 success with them often. I have put at least three or four full packets of hollyhock seeds out in here and not one has come up. They are hands down my fave flowers… in theory! 😂 I also adore dahlias, roses, peonies, sunflowers, blue butterfly pea, purple coneflower, delphinium, nasturtium, pansies, violas, … pretty much all of them! Big bonus if they are also herbal, medicinal, and edible! This is my year of volunteers. Absolutely loved by all gardeners. If you want less work in the veggie or flower garden, add more self-seeding plants! My 2021 volunteers includes cilantro, dill, and chives. My flower volunteers are calendula, sunflowers, marigolds, nasturtium, borage( but I’m over it, it’s crazy). . You can also be intentional with volunteers. When plants go to seed and you have to clear the plant, throw those seeds around where you’d like them and they just might pop up next year! So last year I was wanting to save seeds, so I cut the branches with the seed pods and I put the branches over the Clematis planter, I forgot and never saved the seeds, since that I keep getting seedlings since last summer, those are double aquilegias. What's volunteering in your garden? It seemed a strange term to me when l first heard it "a volunteer plant" as volunteering means to freely offer to take part and seeds have no choice! They are carried on the wind, borne in the guts of animals or in their coats or are found in compost. But l am not complaining..l have been the recipient of both flowers such as yarrow and this delicious blackcurrant. This is certainly the advantage of not having a totally manicured garden or landscape.

Rampant volunteerism in the midst of a weeding frenzy. Certain species fail to respond to standard horticultural technique, yet volunteer freely in places where they are happy. Good gardeners know about this, and keep an eye for useful volunteers. After all, the plant itself has saved us much time and futzing--no seed planting, no little pots, no transplant shock--just a plant found in nature and weeded around, fertilized and watered to the benefit of all. Kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate, shiso, andrographis, gotu kola, even rarer species like ashitaba, bulbine, bloodroot and goldenseal, sometimes respond better to self-propagation than they do to peat pots. Sometimes the gardener casts bread upon the waters and it is eaten by little fishes. Other times bread falls like manna from heaven and is eaten by. . . the gardener.

Today I am digging up in my yard some Burdock root, another one of my ‘volunteer plants’ sent to work with me by Saturn, growing at the base of my Saturn’s tree (this tree is ‘dead’ but is nevertheless quite alive for offerings and the use of other creatures and spirits). I’m making an herbal decoction, and man does this plant ally have quite a taproot. According to the late herbalist Michael Moore "harvesting full flowered plants in the fall can be as much work as digging up a small tree." YEP. Burdock is ruled by Venus, so I call upon her and Saturn.
