It's no secret there is a shortage of qualified SLPs, but it's even more prevalent in rural areas. Because of this, students don't consistently get the quality speech and language services they need. We are on a mission to bring experienced, qualified SLPs who are passionate about making a difference to these districts. Do you use multimodal communication (combination of pictures, signs, gestures, visuals) to support your students language? Once a student has an iPad or dedicated speech device, we donā€™t have to get rid of pictures or their old system! I encourage ALL modes of communication. Parents wanted a simple choice board for home. This student has an AAC device but they wanted a quick way to present two choices without having to navigate through pages on their students iPad. It took me 15 minutes to make! I airdropped some pictures (taken by the parents), printed/laminated them, & added some Velcro to these thick laminate boards. Simple as that! #slppeeps #visualsupports #visualqueen #speechtherapy #aac #communication #slp2b #slpnow #speechies #slp #speechpathology #home #autism #learning #sped #education #speech #april

Posted @withregram ā€¢ @theexpertally Autistic people often feel that they cannot get done as much as NTs get done. And they judge themselves for it. We need to understand two things: . 1) Autistic people often work harder internally than an NT person would to accomplish something. . When there are no accommodations for the environment or the process to work for an autistic person, their energy is often wasted on coping. . Because accommodations are never perfect even when available, because the neurology is different, and because some situations (such as group conversations or transitions) are very energy-consuming, autistic people work extra hard every day even under the best circumstances. . 2) Because of the above, autistic people need extra time during the day and they need recovery time. . Accommodating for the different neurology should come without any judgement. It is the only way to maintain mental health. There are many different accommodations that help. When you hear about speech therapy in schools, you immediately think of speech production/speech sounds, but speech therapy is sooo much more than that! Speech therapy is a multidimensional professional field. School based speech-language pathologists not only have the same graduate degree as SLPs in all other settings, but we also have expertise in how communication impacts a student's educational performance. Working in schools requires that SLPs continually evaluate the impact communication disorders have on a student's education. That includes not just academics, but the social impact, participation, and performance in the classroom setting. Of course, we address speech sound disorders; but SLPs are also skilled in supporting students with social communication challenges, reading difficulties, auditory processing disorders, fluency difficulties and all things related to language development. Our expertise is as broad as it is deep! Let's give a shout out to all the school based SLPs out there! šŸ“£ #schoolslps #slppeeps #specialed

This support needs to recognize that differences between the environment that is good for neurotypical people and the environment that is good for autistic people. Every person on this planet has strengths and challenges. . For all of us, as we are growing up and living our lives, it is important to learn to see ourselves as imperfect but OK human beings with both strengths and challenges. . Getting there can be harder for autistic, and other neurodivergent people, who tend to hear more negative feedback, who tend to do things differently from the neuromajority, and who tend to struggle in the areas that are easy for others. . This makes it so much more important to teach neurodivergent kids about their strengths. And it is important to recognize strengths in our autistic friends, students, co-workers, and employees. . #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessingdisorderparentsupport #activititiesofdailyliving #occupationaltherapy #neurodiverseparenting #neurodivergent #autismparenting #autismparent #autismmom #sensoryprocessingtips #autism #hygiene #autistic #autismfamily #autismparent #autismparents #disabilityadvocate #neurodivergence #slppeeps #autismlife #neurodivergent #behavior #ashaigers #autisticadults #autismcommunity #autisme #autismpride #autismaarenessmonth #autismcommunity #autismlove #anxiety

These are different ways that people think about autism and ADHD. . Many of these terms are not neutral, and people feel strongly about whether or not they should be used. . I think that everyone has the right to use the vocabulary that speaks to them to describe their own experience. It is important to understand that everyone's experience is different. It can also change over time. There are also specific contexts in which one term is more helpful than the other, but that is a whole other story. . This study showed that when the signs of autism in children are not directly related to the diagnostic criteria for autism, the diagnosis is delayed. . Only children who were eventually diagnosed were included in this study. We just know that many children never received their diagnoses for the reasons mentioned in the study, or perhaps for other reasons as well, and proceeded to grow into undiagnosed adults. . But the conclusions made a lot of sense to me. . For children (and I suspect, also for adults) who do not have a speech delay, who mask well, and who either suppress stimming or do not stim in stereotypical ways, the signs of autism might not be obviously related to the diagnostic criteria. For children who have behavioral problems, such as aggression and meltdowns, which can be directly related to their sensory hyper-sensitivties and other challenges, the behavioral problems cover up their autism signs and can distract clinicians into exploring other diagnoses. . As children grow and the social expectations become more complex, many will start to experience more obvious difficulties described in the DSM-V and will be picked up as autistic. Yet again, children who can hide their more obvious autistic traits, mask well and imitate others, will fly under the radar. For many, their social challenges will be written off as a part of their personalities. . This is an extrapolation, but I am thinking that the same applies to adults. This is why adults who can communicate, make eye contact, have families, and keep jobs have trouble getting a diagnosis. Because if you look at the diagnostic criteria, their observable behaviors do not match the criteria. Those observable behaviors are masking the signs of autism. And those adults might have learned to suppress some of the signs as well. Clinicians who directly try to tie what can be observed to the DSM-V criteria, will fail to diagnose. . Repost from @theexpertally ā€¢ This is a huge issue I see on IEPs and school and home therapy programs. . So often, professionals do not think about the reasons the child is not doing something. They assume it is by choice. . If you see a child making a deliberate choice not to do whatever adults deem to be the ā€œrightā€ or ā€œappropriateā€ thing, then managing that by rewarding the child makes perfect sense. . However, most children do well when they can. If they do not do something that adults want them to do, there is usually a good reason for it. . If you think about how the childā€™s condition/disability creates challenges for the child, and what skills the child needs to manage the challenging situations well, then you will focus on teaching, not just on rewarding. . It is OK if you have to use rewards in the teaching process. It really helps some children. You have to think about the rewards you are using though. Do not use food. Do not use sensory activities or recess time. . As you and others set goals for your child, please make sure that you are not putting impossible demands on them, and you are mindful of their need for teaching, and that your child has a chance to feel success often. . #Autism #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #Asd #AutismMum #AutismParents #AutismLife #Anxiety #AutismMom #AutismDad #AutismFamily #ThisIsAutism #stimming #AutismSupport #ADHD #spd #Sensory #RedInstead #Autistic #Light #Diagnosis #Spectrum #MentalHealth #slppeeps #bcbaaba #slp2be #behavior #ashaigers #BCBA #aba

Use boards like this to foster growth in communication in the classroom: 1. Modeling Language: Demonstrating how to use the communication board to express wants, needs, and feelings, while providing opportunities for students to imitate and practice. 2. Building Language Skills: Engaging in structured activities such as storytelling, role-playing, and describing experiences using the communication board to expand vocabulary and sentence structure. 3. Communicating Wants and Needs: Creating a supportive environment where students can confidently express their desires, preferences, and necessities using the communication board, empowering them to advocate for themselves. Oh and did I mention this is FREE? Autism, ADHD, sensro processing disorder, dyslexia, and many other conditions come with sensory processing and integration differences. It is important to support sensory regulation for children and adults. . It is not something that needs to be decreased. . We should not expect people with sensory sensitivities to just "get used to it". . Sensory differences and needs are normal, both for children and for adults. We all have sensory needs. For people with sensory differences, their responses and needs might look different. They might have responses to sensory inputs that are more or less intense than typical. They might respond to sensory inputs that are not obvious or noticeable for someone with typical sensory processing. . As a result, they might need less of some sensory inputs to prevent overload and more of others to compensate for decreased sensitivity. . A big change in sensory sensitivity can be a signal of stress, overload, or burnout. So we need to pay attention to these changes. . Changes in sensory sensitivities also naturally happen throughout the day, and over longer periods of time as well. They can change significantly over a person's lifetime. . All we need to do with sensory needs is learn about them and honor them by offering acceptance and accommodations/supports. Accommodations and supports include both modifying the environment to remove or decrease sensory triggers, and offering sensory tools and opportunities that promote regulation and comfort. . We don't need to worry about them or pathologize them. . It's that simple. . Tell me about your or your childā€™s favorite sensory items in comments. . Just a few thoughts based on my experience as a professional doing special education advocacy, coaching, and consulting. . I truly appreciate the neurodiversity paradigm and how it helps us support ND individuals and being their authentic and unapologetic selves. . At the same time, within the systems I have to deal with in my work, I integrate that paradigm with the disability paradigm. . I see the term neurodiversity misused. . I also hear from people who feel that their or their children's experience is not well captured by this perspective alone. . Let me know in comments what terminology you relate to. . #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessingdisorderparentsupport #activititiesofdailyliving #occupationaltherapy #neurodiverseparenting #neurodivergent #autismparenting #autismparent #autismmom #sensoryprocessingtips #autism #hygiene #autistic #autismfamily #autismparent #autismparents #disabilityadvocate #neurodivergence #slppeeps #autismlife #neurodivergent #behavior #ashaigers #autisticadults #autismcommunity #autisme #autismpride #autismaarenessmonth #autismcommunity #autismlove #anxiety 5d

Repost from @mrsspeechiep: Doā€™s and Donā€™ts for supporting communication! And donā€™t worry, we allllllll do the donā€™ts sometimes - you should see some videos I have and Iā€™m like šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬ - but it DOES help to be aware and to try not to make it a habit! What would you add?!? ā¤µļø . My thoughts: This is a wonderful list with some many amazing suggestions, and have a few comments: - if your child is working on labeling/learning vocabulary, look for another way to ask for a label (for example, by giving a sentence starter Ā«Ā Look, I see ā€¦Ā Ā»). - I so often see kids being told what to say (Ā«Ā Say HelloĀ Ā» Ā«Ā Say I am sorry.Ā Ā») This doesnā€™t teach a child anything about the reasons to say these words and the situations in which to use them. Itā€™s so much better to scaffold by pointing out important aspects of the situation and asking the child what can be communicated in it . - Itā€™s SO important to give enough time to process what has been said to a child and to give the child time to formulate and communicate their answer. When I do school observations, I often see very quick communication, even when the child has the extra processing time accommodation. I also see the difference that giving the extra time makes. - Iā€™ve already posted about questions and the pressure their create. Some children deal well with questions and some children are working on learning to ask and answer questions, but we need to make sure that we donā€™t overdo it. - and, of course, the best way to encourage communication is to build trust and to enjoy the process. If you are frustrated with the process, the child is likely to perceive that and not feel safe and comfortable to communicate. . #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessingdisorderparentsupport #activititiesofdailyliving #occupationaltherapy #neurodiverseparenting #neurodivergent #autismparenting #autismparent #autismmom #sensoryprocessingtips #autism #hygiene #autistic #autismfamily #autismparent #autismparents #disabilityadvocate #neurodivergence #slppeeps #autismlife #neurodivergent #behavior #ashaigers #autisticadults #autismcommunity #autisme #autismpride #autismaarenessmonth #autismcommunity #autismlove #anxiety
