On this day , last year, needed to repeat: A part of experiencing the postpartum realities means connecting with your imagination in a meaningful and intentional way. The imagination is extremely powerful during the fourth trimester, it can be shocking what shows up . The thoughts generated during this time have the ability to shape the next hour, day, month, week, years. Tuning into this idea - that everything you can imagine is real - will give you a better understanding of how everything you are thinking IS true, BUT it’s about deciphering these thoughts and choosing which ones you desire to entertain. The Tunnel Ultra 200 (144) in my case DNF No new medal to show you this Monday 😔 and add to my collection. Sadly, the Tunnel got the better of me after 38 hours 23 minutes. I really should have booked the following day off work and I might have pushed myself that little bit longer and further. What is the Tunnel Ultra, well, it’s a 200 mile race using a mile long tunnel for the course. So 100 out and backs to complete in a strict 55 hour time limit. I managed to do 72 but called it a day because I just couldn’t march out 56 more miles on painful ankles and feet, I just couldn’t keep the pace going for another 28 laps. A real experience though and a few lessons learned. I’m proud at how far I got and loved who I spent my time underground with. It’s unfinished business, so I’ve already competed the online application to hopefully return in 2025 to try again. The 2024 edition saw 36 of us ‘crazies’ toe the start line with only 7 making it till the end. I will never forget this race, I met some wonderful people and was reunited with some great people, proper heroes in the ultra running community and built on friendships. If running inside a tunnel wasn’t tough enough, there were a few other things to deal with. 1. The portaloo for runners was strategically placed I reckon next to a puddle so we had to tip toe or balance on a stepping stone to get into it. Not easy when your legs have gone and your balance has gone to 💩 as well. 2. The Temperature, really cold so I was dressed like a ninja for most of the two nights I was out there. 3. The walls were really freaky, it’s true about the stories you hear of faces in the wall. I just had to look at the ground and not at the walls. There was one section that completely freaked me out by random objects and bits of furniture. Yes, I want to go back and give it another shot. This morning was somewhat a surprise! ☃️ I woke up at 2am and couldn't sleep, then looked out of the window at around 4 am to see snow! What?! It never snows in England! 🌨 😂 I ran to the tunnel just before 5 am, so I got first dibs on the fresh powder. Turned out the fresh powder was super wet, which made me eventually soaked and freezing 🥶 Top work! 🙌 Ellen decided to stop this morning, we walked with all the bags to the closest road (the tunnel is not very accessible...) and then stood there waiting for an Uber for about an hour (combination of snow, hilly roads, and lack of mobile signal), getting more soaked and frozen. I told you something special was coming 🤩 This weekend, Ellen is running the Tunnel! As the name suggests, the race takes place in a tunnel - the Combe Down Tunnel, to be precise. The tunnel is located in Bath, Somerset, and it is the longest foot tunnel in the UK. Now, the tunnel itself is not 200 miles long. It is just over a mile long. But please pay attention to the "just over" bit because that bit adds up, and over the whole distance comes to 14 miles! 😱 So, in total, the race is actually 214 miles, and you run 100 'out-n-backs'. You have 55 hours to complete this race, and if you think that's plenty of time, I will just laugh 😁 hysterically 😆 There are low lights in the tunnel throughout the day but they go off at 23.00 and come on at 07.00 and when it's dark in the tunnel it is pitch black, you can't see your hand in front of your own face 😵💫 There are also speakers in the tunnel that play creepy violin music, but for some reason, not this year. You are not allowed outside aid of any description, and that includes music. And... the walls of the tunnel have faces 😵 The Tunnel is a race that is supposed to test your senses and your limits and is possibly the greatest mileage ultramarathon ever run 99% underground. Farm Life. The good, the bad and the tender hearts. Luna is our oldest chicken. A breed bred to lay everyday until they die with rather short lifespans (usually about 2 years) but she decided about six months in that she was not going to participate in that daily laying nonsense and has long outlived her sisters by years. But we know her time is almost at an end. She is old and it’s getting harder for her to do stuff. We brought her in the house again lastnight thinking it was almost time but she perked up a bit so we let her be back with her flock friends again this morning. But we know the inevitable is close. It will be hardest on this guy. The tender hearted chicken lover. Already losing sleep worrying she’ll be gone in the morning when he wakes. Say a prayer for this big kid if you can. He already buried five of her sisters and this last one will be the hardest. He loves all of our chickens. When I got into this business, I had many doubts of my ability to help people lose weight, gain strength and feel better about themselves. In training school, it was simple; go to class, learn different training techniques and human anatomy, take exams and get certified. Working with actual people who are trusting you to assist them with changing their lifestyles for the better can be a huge task to undertake and something I take very seriously. From being a spinning instructor, Zumba instructor, a dance instructor and now a veteran personal trainer of 16 or so years, I’ve found out that it’s a hell of a lot more than teaching people to eat right, pick up heavy shit and hold themselves accountable. At the end of the day, it’s about connection and vulnerability. You can’t start any sort of process such as this without wading around in your own vulnerability and understanding that a lot of times you need to connect with someone else to be able to help you through it. I have to admit that I kind of hate it when people thank me, I mean, I understand the sentiment but I just guide my clients, they do the hard stuff. At the end of the day, I don’t have to do this. #RIPBrotherWayne Wayne Kramer's Rocket Reducer was a whiff of crazy White Panther mayhem and Trans Love Energies while the Motor City was Burnin' during the heady days back when his band was "managed" by fellow felon John Sinclair and Wayne got himself in plenty trouble losing the war on drugs. Wayne finally walked away from a life of anger and addiction, and I first got chance to meet and see #BrotherWayne about 30 or so years ago when I got notified he was coming to town to play the Bottom of the Hill. I was recruited by his label to help do some local promotion for long lost radical rocker #WayneKramer who was being rescued out of #JailGuitarDoors junkie parolee obscurity. He'd been spotted on the rebound by #MrBrett at #EpitaphRecords ,who decided to invest in the influential rocker and give him a new lease on rock n roll life in the wake of Rancid and Offspring hitting platinum punk numbers. Wayne was an elder statesman of anarchy and peace, keeping hope and resistance alive by delivering three new albums in a row #TheHardStuff #DangerousMadness and #CitizenWayne . As time wore on, Wayne didn't wear out, and found sobriety in his 50's, and future touring collaborators including a who's who of bad ass alt rock and roll, ranging from members of the Street Walking Cheetahs, Bellrays , Fugazi , Zen Guerilla, Faith No More, and Soundgarden. I try not to miss Wayne when he came through town, including his recent rebranding as the MC50 etc... My heart goes out to all his family, young son, and current band members who were all looking forward to releasing new MC5 music this year produced by Bob Ezrin , with my pal Brad Brooks on lead vocals. RIP Wayne Kramer (@waynekramerofficial). Sad news about the passing of the former MC5 guitarist and committed political activist. I spoke to him in 2014 as he was promoting his Jail Guitar Doors USA foundation, which served to provide inmates with musical instruments and tuition, and was motivated by Wayne’s own experiences in jail, having been jailed in the ‘70s for dealing drugs. Talking about his recent life and work, it seemed that Wayne was a man of principle, as exemplified in his answer to my final question, which was what advice he would pass on to any aspiring musicians. “Be the person you say you are, show up on time, and do the best that you can do,” he said. “Those are the things that matter: to give it 100%. A life in the arts is not a walk in the park – this is a very tough way to survive, and if you are an asshole people don’t call you back. It’s important to be genuine and to really do the best you can do. Learn as much as you can learn, and give it full measures.” RIP Wayne. Thank you for the music. I don’t usually talk in public about things that aren’t going well, but maybe it’s the impending cold front or the awful night I had last night, but I just want to say that our farm business looks really neat and pretty and fun online, but sometimes it really sucks in real life. Case in point we’ve had four goat kids, born in the last two weeks, and we’ve lost all four of them; one died on its own, and I had to put the other three down myself. Funny, the world tells you it’s good to get things out in the open, I actually feel worse, saying the stuff out loud. The hard stuff, however, is one of the things that makes the good stuff even gooder. I’m out in the pasture today doing the work required for rotational grazing. Clipping plastic fence stays on the fiberglass post in a cold northwest wind, and yes, it hurts when those clips break on your fingertips. But you know when you see the quality improvement in the meat you’re raising and selling, the improvement in your animals and your land, that has a way of making all the hard stuff worth it. 364 miles in 12 days! Recently, my entire world came crashing down. Watching someone you love die, rips you apart. I've lost my want to run, I no longer understand my reason why, and in self-sabotaging mode I am stuggling to even feel worthy of running, guilty of feeling any shred of happiness. And then in the ashes, I saw Mark Cockbain was hosting the virtual 12 Days of Cockbain. An event, in my current situation and prehaps in any situation, would be a very big battle to achieve. So I decided to not overthink, and jump right in! Today is just 1 mile, tomorrow 3, day twelve is 78, with many more miles inbetween. This week was a hard one. I went back to work in an office for the first time since COVID and my youngest baby started daycare. Mama cried. My sweet girl leaving you with other people was the hardest thing I have done so far. Maybe because I've spent every moment of the last 2 years with you. Maybe because your my last baby. Whatever the case, I am so incredibly proud of you. This week you rose to the challenge of this new thing. You and your brother and your dad were such troopers while mama worked. Not gonna lie, it’s been a rough week for me, with way more real life and hard adulting stuff than I was prepared for all at once. Open windows, kitty snuggles, clean kitchen counters, the sound of the wind in the trees, pretty lipstick, a room lit with only candlelight, white roses in a vase, a good book, pumpkin spice candles burning. This week hits a bit different this year. I can finally say that I've had the opportunity to be a client of amazing midwifery care. Yes, there are some midwives that take their license more seriously than their clients. They are called medwives in the momma community. It's been a year since I started interviewing homebirth and birth center midwives in the area....only to be turned down by 99% of them for being "high risk".... thank the Lord I found @jax_community_midwives and Jenn who actually listened to me as a patient and encouraged me to follow my intuition the entire pregnancy. By the Grace of God, the baby decided to come while she was on call. September is NICU Awareness Month and I've now been through 2 years of being a NICU momma. Never in my dreams did I think I would get placed in this club. My pregnancy was going fine- low risk, no GD (though I had to fight them on it). There was a cascade of issues that led to a very wrong due date. It started with me not being fully aware of my cycle (typical mid-20s woman) and not fighting harder on implantation bleeding vs spotting with the hospital based midwife team. I didn't even test for over a month and a half, as I had no symptoms and the bleeding was confusing. I went into labor at what I believed was 33+2 and he was my first. I got scared of having a preemie so I went to the hospital (though the plan was freebirth since I couldn't find a competent homebirth midwife in my area of Georgia). I was in Florida visiting family without my husband for the Easter weekend. Baby was born 13 hours after active labor started. Not without severe birth trauma for me. He was whisked off to the NICU and I didn't see him for almost 6 hours because of the PPH the OB caused. Come to figure out he was actually 37+3, but the doctors refused to belive me, despite baby not needing any medical support after the first few days. My son was kept medically hostage for 22 days. I was threatened with CPS involvement if I took my healthy baby home. Every day in the NICU was a fight- with nurses and doctors. I learned so much about the hospital system that month. So here's to NICU Awareness Month. Check on your momma friends who have NICU babies. It's a lonely journey. We get forgotten about quickly. It's traumatic. It sucks. But we are strong. Our babies are strong. #thursdaythoughts… I saw the perfect post from @laurabenanti this morning. 3 pictures of her darling daughters with a 5 word caption that to me contains the whole #paradoxofparenting and honestly, #lifeingeneral… “Not pictured: the hard stuff.” Oh man. There is hard stuff, and plenty of it. In this season of my life, in no particular order, the challenges include: #selfdoubt, the vicissitudes of #teenlife, the big feelings of #littlekidlife, the realities of #adulting, choices in #ageing (my own, and my loved ones), #showbiz, fill in the blank on any given day. And yet. Almost every day there is a moment … of grace, of gratitude, of wonder, awe, and appreciation at the sheer mystery of the whole wild ride. A moment like the one I felt looking at my girls and snapping this pic. And when I notice these moments and lean into them and allow everything to be just as it is and continue to unfold, I breathe a lot easier. My intention in sharing #thegoodstuff is never to diminish the realities of #thehardstuff. But rather to use the power of my focus to feel joy as often as possible and #createmore of it. 🙏 💞
