I rarely delve into horror, especially books with paranormal themes, as I sometimes struggle to suspend my disbelief. However, Tudor absolutely nailed it with this gripping and atmospheric read! The vampire genre has to be done just right and Tudor needs to be seriously applauded for being such an imaginative and descriptive writer! She crafts her characters with profound depth and intrigue, infusing an astonishingly realistic dimension to her work. Her stories are incredibly well plotted and are abundant in surprising twists, never failing to captivate. ❄️ Thank you to @cjtudorauthor and @randomhouse for my copy of The Gathering. It was a very unique book about a small Alaskan town near a vampyr colony. When a boy is found with his throat ripped out and all his blook drained, they call in a detective who specializes in vampyr killings. Detective Barbara Atkins shows up to determine if this was a colony killing, and see if she needs to authorize a cull. She joins a local sheriff in uncovering the secrets of the town, and works to figure out if she is hunting a monster, a psychopath, or both. Thoughts: This was such a captivating book. The supernatural elements were used perfectly, essentially equating the vampyr colony to an ostracized racial group. The way that elements like racism, bigotry, and hate were discussed in this book was so poignant and purposeful. There are so many storylines in this book, including teens faking a vampyr turning, a pious reverend trying to turn people to god, and illicit blood and meat trade, and town members who don’t seem to age. It’s hard to put into words the twisted and well crafted plot of this story. CJ Tudor is a fantastic writer and she slowly revealed the history between vampyr and human in the story. We didn’t get bogged down with history, and what she did share was interesting and relevant to the plot. There was a slow build of tension and I couldn’t put this book down. First of all, this title just screeeeeams FUN! And fun is what you’ll get with this one! This was a debut of a new cozy mystery series titled The Vacation Mysteries brought to us by a pseudonym for a beloved Canadian author, Catherine McKenzie! It was such an amusing take on the murder mystery genre and I always relish in a books about books concept! Elenor was such a snarky and quirky MC and I enjoyed how her first hand narration broke down the fourth wall and let us into her inner thoughts! Mack does this through footnotes which can come across a bit distracting at first but once I switched to the audiobook version, they flowed seamlessly and I actually found they enhanced the story quite well and really brought it to life! Readers beware: this story is going to leave you itching for a trip to Italy, a good Aperol spritz and all the pasta! The characters are so vivid. You’ll like one (maybe two?) of them. The rest you’ll loathe. The isolated setting, the perpetual danger, & the twisted, unpredictable plot will lock you into a never-ending state of dread that will have you holding your breath & racing through the pages. Every chapter ends with either a new problem or another shocking bombshell. This story is about breaking points. How far would you go to protect your life, your loved ones, your future? What kind of sins are you really capable of if your back was against the wall--and could you bury this secret & live with yourself if you had to? There's no way of really knowing unless (God forbid) you find yourself in a situation that tests your answers to those questions. And we'll see each of these characters tested--the ones we like (the good ones) and the ones we hate (the bad people). It left me thinking that some situations could turn anyone into a bad person. If you’re looking for a thriller that will keep you guessing (& on the edge of your seat), this one's for you. ✨T/W: One of the deaths is kind of gory. 🔎 Thank you to @prhaudio and Maren Stoffels for my copy of this book. It was about Lexi, a girl who gets an invitation to join a brand new kind of escape room with her best friend Tess. They recently suffered from a tragedy and need a distraction, so they decide to do it. When they get there, they meet Beau and Zora, also best friends doing the escape room. But once they arrive, the learn they are actually competing against their friends, and even worse, if one person succeeds, the other will pay the price. Thoughts: This was a fun and straightforward YA book. I think it was marketed as more horror, and it didn’t quite make it there. The premise was interesting and if I had to describe it, it would say a children’s version of the SAW movies. The characters were one dimensional, but I was still interested in their backgrounds and what would happen in this book. It was SUPER short which was actually nice, and it was just a fun and quick read. The sun is shining, all the coffee and I made some plans to look forward to in May ☀️ ✨Review ✨   My thriller besties at @thrillerbookloversthepulse have been raving about My Perfect Husband in the group chat and I can see why - it’s a twisty fun read that pairs perfectly with a bevvy and a lazy afternoon.   This was my first read by Georgina Cross. I didn’t trust a single character and that’s just the way I like it!  I enjoyed her writing style and the way she teased us with breadcrumbs of the truth throughout the story. What a clever and comical crime thriller! I relished in the dark humour and the multiple red herrings and I was never quite sure who to trust and the ‘whodunit’! Molly as the MC, or as I like to refer to her as “Messy Molly” was an intriguing lead whom I found quite charming and entertaining! I split this one with audio and found the narration was fantastic and definitely enhanced the wittiness of Brent’s writing. It’s an easily addictive story and just all around plain fun! This psychological thriller is extremely atmospheric and the locked room/ home invasion trope is incredibly tense and exactly what nightmares are made of! My heart was pounding from start to finish and the entire story is so intriguingly unsettling. I was anxious and felt uneasy but I couldn’t stop! I mainly listened to one as an audiobook and I just relished in the narration and felt completely immersed. 💚💚💚💚💚 I started this book with low expectations as I had never heard of Sarina Bowen before. I was blown away. This was the perfect thriller with a whodunnit plot like, unreliable characters, and a small romance feature. The ending was a little rushed, so I'd probably down it to a 4.5 star other than I was just simply blown away by how well the rest of the book kept me on the edge of my seat. Unofficial synopsis: after 5 years Ariel receives a text that suddenly changes everything. She begins to question, what really happened to her former lover, what was he uncovering, and who was behind the secretes of their tech company. It addresses pertinent and timely issues surrounding race and prejudice and while uncomfortable at times, I enjoyed how raw and uncompromising it was. 💥Review💥 Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman ARC from Quirk Books via @netgalley – thank u! Genre: Horror 2🌟/5 Erin & Silas are in a close-knit group of college friends. But the bond between Erin & Silas is more complex – they used to be a couple & Erin is still unable to break herself out of Silas’ charismatic, but borderline unhinged, influence. When he dies from an overdose (after Erin repeatedly bailing him out from rehab), her world crumbles down. Then, she hears about a drug that allows the users to see the dead. 💀 She grasps at this straw – but the consequences are more than dire. 😱 I loved the cover and really wanted to love the book – but, sadly, I couldn’t. Firstly, I couldn’t relate to the characters: they were all just so IRRITATING 😡. There was nothing likable about any of them, they were all petty, awful & just not fun to be around! And that’s coming from a huge Dark Academia fan, where all the characters are usually at least deeply flawed, if not worse. But my fav Dark Academia works have a way of presenting them through the exaggerated lens of a melancholy enchantment, “picturesque at all cost,” which makes these books enjoyable on many levels. The characters in Ghost Eaters are downright unpleasant in the most mundane ways possible. Their company made me actually miserable, & I didn’t want to be in their world. Secondly, what I seek in horror reads is a mood ☠ & a good supernatural story (as books don’t scare me). Regrettably, the story in this one was a trope that has been prevalent in horror in the last 2 years, & it got tired really quickly. This wasn’t even a fresh take on this trope; another title has done this before & better. All in all – a very frustrating read for me, not least because I feel there’s potential in Chapman’s writing: there’s an unexpectedly epic quality to the ending of the book (the only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1) & some striking passages, like this one: “A name is a vessel. It holds certain syllables, certain cadences. If you say them in a certain order, in a certain rhythm, you’re able to invoke the very breath of God." QOTD: Latest disappointing read?

The neighbors all have secrets and pasts and as they’re revealed and exposed, we get to observe how these amateur sleuths heal together while solving the whodunit mystery of Joseph’s attack and the evictions! I enjoyed the overall balance of this book and how well Sampson layered the mystery and intrigue with hilarity and heart! Thank you to @marysueruccibooks and @meganlmiranda for my copy of this much anticipated book! It was about Hazel, daughter of Mirror Lake’s long time detective Perry Holt, who recently passed away from a heart attack and left her everything. When she inherits her childhood home, she is drawn back into the town and all the secrets hidden there. At the same time, the town is going through a drought, and as the water levels lower, secrets are becoming unearthed. Now Hazel decides she needs to stick around with hopes of solving a decades long mystery of where her mother disappeared to when she was young. Thoughts: This is a classic small town mystery. The claustrophobic familiarity of a town where everyone knows everything was the perfect setting for this domestic thriller. There are so many secrets and mysteries that slowly became clear and drew me into the story. What at first seems like a straight-forward mystery actually has so many layers and characters that come into play. I was suspicious of everyone, even though the twist did end up being fairly obvious to me. I thought this book was paced well and had just enough creepy details to keep me intrigued. It did start off slow, but got better as it went along. Miranda does this thing where she uses characters names in almost every sentence, which is always hard for me to get used to. While I was a twilight fan many years ago, it ended there and I’ve been hesitant on re-entering the paranormal/ fantasy universe since. I saw this one described as a paranormal Romeo and Juliet, and as a fan of Ali Hazelwood in general, I figured this was a great first step, and it certainly delivered and more! This had an enjoyable marriage of convenience trope and Hazelwood continued to bring the spiciness and wittiness that she’s known for with her usual romances! I paired this with an ALC and I found the dual narration to be extremely well done and enhanced the story perfectly! 💊 Thank you SO much to @marykubica and @parkrowbooks for my copy of this one! It’s about Meghan, an ICU nurse dealing with a patient that jumped off a bridge. When a patient named Caitlin arrives in a coma, Meghan is assigned to care for her, but soon a witness comes forward saying that they think Caitlin might have been pushed. At the same time, there are vicious crimes happening all over the city of Chicago, and they are getting closer and closer to where Meghan lives. Meghan is trying to protect her daughter, but soon finds herself drawn into something much more sinister than she imagined. Thoughts: Oh my goodness Mary Kubica. This book was SO twisted in the best way. I loved reading about each character but didn’t really trust them. The plot was layered and I was drawn into the book from the very first page. The pacing was so well done that I couldn’t put it down and read it in a few hours. Having lived in Chicago in the past, the gritty underbelly was so well described and I felt like I was right there with the characters. The big twist in this book was amazing. I didn’t see it coming and I loved the way it fit in perfectly. I think there was a little too much going on in the end, and I wish the story would have just fleshed out the unanswered questions in the very end, instead of throwing in another big moment. 💥Review💥 Where the Dead Wait by Ally Wilkes ARC from @titanbooks – thank u! Genre: Horror 3.5🌟/5 Cold. Cannibalism. Impostor syndrome. Ghosts? LGBT in the 19th century. Colonialism. It’s 1889. William Day, a disgraced Arctic explorer, who survived his failed expedition by eating his companions, gets a chance for redemption. He is tasked with finding his missing 2nd-in-command, Stevens. With a new crew & Stevens’ wife, who is a medium, he sets sail back into the icy hell he left 13 years before. 🥶 This is a very interesting tale, with many unexpected elements that I enjoyed reading about. The MC, placed in the role of a captain for the 2nd time in his life, is suffering from a crippling impostor syndrome. It was fascinating for me to compare it with my own one… & see how this was explored & ingeniously used to enhance the feeling of hopelessness. This novel is definitely a character-driven, VERY slow burn, focusing on Day’s experiences from both voyages, via 2 alternating timelines. It can be seen as a descent-into-madness story, but it also is an exploration of 2 very complex characters, perhaps reminiscent of some themes touched on in Fight Club. It poses the questions of what being human means, who/what is civilised vs savage, subtly weaving the issue of colonialism into the plot (I really appreciated that it wasn’t shoehorned). For me it also quizzes the concepts of free will & control of our own lives: Day becomes captain for the 1st time when he is the highest-in-command left alive, after his captain’s death; the 2nd time he is ordered by the Admiralty to take lead on the rescue expedition. NB: this book is a very bleak, gruesome read, evoking the feelings of dread, entrapment & human fragility in the face of nature. It also delves into the violent inner turmoil of the human soul. Why not 5 stars: - Could be 20% shorter - Narration in the past tense mixed with present tense. The lovely people from @titanbooks sent me this book after I already won it in @thebookbeardreview ‘s giveaway. Ok I should have known better, again, but the cover and title mislead me to think this was going to be more thriller-esk but in true Carola Lovering fashion, it ends up being more of a suspenseful drama. Now that aside, I still really enjoyed it!
