Bad Things is sort of a queer contemporary version of The Shining. It takes place during a snowstorm in an abandoned hotel where 3 friends (and 1 adjacent lover) converge for a weekend getaway. Ruthie Nodd (Gayle Rankin) is the central character and main point of interest, a woman who makes lots of unwise decisions and is about to sell the hotel to investors after being gifted it by her estranged mother. It's a slow start with this one but then the 4 temporary tenants begin to see strange things related to the past. Sound familiar? I had such hope for this one but there is just not enough there to hold it together. Director Stewart Thorndike's first movie Lyle was much better. I did, however, love love love the ending of Bad Things. And it was great to see Molly Ringwald as a grown-ass woman. Miss her. Day 29 of VHSeptember: I did Something Bad, Please Don't Hotel on Me If anybody is guilty of doing something bad regarding a hotel, it's the marketing department at Avalanche Home Entertainment. This right here, showing ghostly apparitions on the cover, warning you about room 207, saying on the back of the box that the room is haunted, this spooky looking thing right here... is NOT a horror movie. I've been bamboozled! Those fiends! It is, however, a kinda neat drama about strangers with dark pasts and uncouth motives stuck together in a small hotel. The performances are good and it's got some nice atmosphere, but overall it's just a slog that thinks it's more poignant and clever than it is. I'm definitely leaving a scathing review on hotels.com after I check out and I'm never staying here again. Also, I can't figure out for the life of me why it's called Appetite. 7/10 See No Evil Film by Gregory Dark Years after surviving a horrific attack from a large religious obsessed mysterious killer who carves out his victim's eyes, Officer Williams is now a guard at a juvenile detention centre. While chaperoning a group of teenaged detainees to a volunteer job at an abandoned hotel, Williams and his wards begin being attacked and brutally killed by a large chained hook wielding maniac. They've got to escape to survive but the hotel is a deathtrap and the vicious killer is relentless in pursuit of punishment for the sinners. The WWE Kane vehicle horror of 2006! Not highly praised but has its qualities. SPOILER WARNINGS ahead, can't help myself with this one. Gory. Very gory. Gory fun and this was the gemstone for me. That and pretty creative deaths while being gory. The dread factor was alive too, killing off fairly innocent characters who hadn't done anything in ironic ways, while allowing jerk jackass characters to walk out by the end. I disagree with their character killing selection, could tell they killed off a main just to seem edgy and unpredictable but it didn't have a Game of Thrones feel. Just felt cheap and disorienting. Speaking of, I don't mind the Saw-esk quick flash and dash transitions but they were so so overused in this. Just dizzying and unnecessary. It was clearly a style choice but ended up being distracting and not cool. Kane was pretty good as Jacob, but they could have made him scarier, he looked very human and his interactions kind of odd. Too much heavy breathing. But still he did great in the role. Not so great performances, or just character introductions quickly swept to the side in irrelevance once the killing starts. Was better when the killer was shrouded in mystery, lost all mystique once he stepped out into the light. Great horror location and set dressing, big ups. Kind of wish washy plot. Decent twist. Watched Reincarnation (2005), the third entry in J-Horror Theatre…I’ll definitely say this is by far the best entry I’ve seen in J-Horror Theatre as of yet. Wonderful pacing and creepy atmosphere are definitely the highlights of this film. Not to mention it’s directed by Takashi Shimizu so I automatically went into the film with a strong feeling and to be fair he did a lot with this movie, the atmosphere is not exactly what I expected but overall nothing too really over the top or grotesque, more so relies on context very much like how Takashi Shimizu’s other works are also very context driven. However this movie does have a creepy doll… 😅 and that’s the only thing I thought was just unnerving in the entire film. These spooky books & movies feature hotels, motels, apartments, and the like. Or simply “Hotels” for short because I couldn’t fit all of that on there lol I read Woom, better than expected but not as shocking as some readers make it out to be. I also read Dead Body Disposal which was so dumb it was funny.. the main character’s stupidity made me mad but it kept me on the edge of my seat 😂 Psycho and The Shining of course had to be here. I’ve seen most of the movies on my list, the original Toolbox Murders and Followed being the exceptions.
