London 2024 was my third marathon, this time I followed a structured plan using @runna_coach They say numbers do not lie and the stats emphasise why training is so important, here are several takeaways 👉 Increasing the distance over the 16-week training block will help you get your PB and increase your fitness. I covered 41.2% more than I did for 2022. 👉 Be consistent with your plan, you can see in 2022 I covered 0 KM in week 5 and very little in week 14. 👉 Run with purpose, I ran more for London 2024 but what is key is the increased number of 10K and 15k runs, this helped my endurance. Additionally, I ran fewer runs under 5k for 2024. 👉 Overall heart rate lower than in 2022 and 2023, this could indicate increased fitness, it reminds me of the interval and tempo runs perhaps this helped improve my HR. 👉At Berlin I had a much higher HR and was not ready for the sub 4 time I had hoped. I followed the pacer which led to increased anxiety as I wanted to keep up. At around 26K I decided to slow down and this reflects on the graph. 👉 Both 2022 and 2023 show a dramatic slowdown of pace with the increased time per KM. This is where I cramped at both events, I was in pain and switching between walking and slow jogging. At both events, I never recovered with the pace being well above 6 min per KM. 👉By contrast London 2024 shows a consistent linear flow with a very strong finish indicated by the big increase in pace towards the end, dropping to a mid 4 min per KM. 👉 The numbers do not show my nutrition intake but I increased my gel intake from every 7k/40min to every 30min. Instead of 6, I carried 8 gels, 8 salt tablets and a few CLIFF blocks. I took the salt tablets with each gel and chewed on 2 blocks during the last hour. I believe this played a factor in not cramping. 👉 I did not skip water stations and sipped on water even when I felt I did not need it. I knew this would be needed further down the line. 5x50 day 29. That was a toughie. Legs a little heavy from the half yesterday but not so much that I didn’t want to head out. It’s more that it was the @ogmorephoenixrunners AGM tonight and I had to prepare this morning before work and head off straight after work to set up. A positive evening, but as discussions took place - the rain came down and continued beyond the end of the meeting - and into that time I needed to run. At 9pm. Miserable, drizzly rain. The kind that soaks you through within a few seconds. And it did. One of those nights where before the challenge I’d have stayed in. But I got it done and actually found it really refreshing. Bodmin Beacon Beast Marathon Morning of the event, not feeling 100% and not sure why, but I wanted to get out there and stretch my legs again! so I headed to the event and got to race HQ with time to spare. Everything was pretty simple race number pick up, chip strapped to my wrist and shortly after listen to the event briefing. It was almost time to go down to the start. The mayor did a little chat and sent us on our way. we started two minutes early as everyone was ready to go. about 300m down the road I followed the payment around to the right and didn’t see any arrows so checking behind me. I then noticed others going left realising I’ve gone the wrong way. ** full write-up on Facebook Adam Tango Holland ** I saw 26 miles come up on my watch and knew that we weren’t near the finish yet and it was downhill which I was excited about as I was then catching Steve back up. For the last half mile, we ran together racing it out heading down to the finish which I had no idea where it was. I had the last marshall say it’s up the steps, as soon as I saw the steps I went for it and managed to get up before Steve and 1st across the line in 3:11:34 and Steve 3:11:36 (chip time exactly 3:11:35). it made for a very exciting finish not just for me but for the spectators too. Absolutely love the course and I do feel I should’ve been quicker because of all the stopping in the first half, but it’s still not a bad time for a very hilly trail marathon (3000ft of elevation) 3rd place and 1st lady was Jodie-May 3:50:37. it was lovely to see many people I knew taking part and a few of them using this event as training for the Dartmoor Discovery. Alive and kicking - I’m backkk 🙌🏽💪🏾 🤒 I was having a pretty successful week up until Thursday, were I started to feel a bit ill. It quickly escalated to three days bed bound and feeling pretty crapp 🚲 Unfortunately, I had to make the decision to miss my TT race, which, as you can imagine, ate me alive!!! I had been really looking forward to it, but I know it was the right decision. Three days off training aren’t quite significant in the grand scheme of things, when I’ve been working so hard for months. 💡Lesons learnt/reitereted on this period of sickness was a pretty basics one, yet so important: listen to your body !!! Medal Monday highlights for me the importance of giving back. A quote resonates “Help others without any reason and give without the expectation of receiving anything in return” . Yesterday was an opportunity to do just that, give back to the running community, not money, but my time, legs, voice and words of encouragement. We should always seek out opportunities to do so, they are not hard to find if you really want to. . It’s the least we can do because remember someone did it for you at some stage. So why not help that person who is starting out in their running journey, give a kind word of encouragement not criticise, show empathy as journeys are different, uplift and not put down etc. But most importantly do it joy and a smile. . That’s the reward in itself, that warm fuzzy feeling you get from helping others. I know I was filled with laughs and smiles for all 6.2 miles yesterday. That’s good enough for me. . GFA Training plan starts today! + 2 huge updates. 🔥 Today marks the official start to my GFA qualification training for London Marathon 2025. Around 20 weeks of training, building to a peak week of around 70 miles and a few 10K races dotted around. Reaching that 6th ⭐️ Firstly, thank you for all the lovely comments and messages since I ran the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, I’m very grateful. Secondly, some of you have asked about my six star journey so here’s how I got there: I ran my first two marathons, London 2017 and New York 2019, for charity and secured a charity place for Berlin 2020. Knowing that I wanted to complete all six I thoroughly researched all options and also booked a place for the 2020 Chicago Marathon with Sports Tours International who were highly recommended. 2020 was a no-go for all mass participation events and even though Berlin did go ahead in September 2021, UK charity places were postponed so I secured a late place with Sports Tours. Berlin still became my 3rd ⭐️ and Chicago my 4th ⭐️ in October 2022 (delayed due to US travel restrictions). So just Tokyo and Boston to go. I had registered my interest to complete all six majors with Sports Tours at the outset and waited my turn to receive the offer of a place. As with all tour operators, there’s understandably a priority list and I ran in Tokyo in March 2023 and finally Boston for my 6th ⭐️. What I have learned is that there’s no easy way to obtain entries into all six events using just one route, unless of course you’re an elite athlete. Success in ballots is slim and there’s no ballot for Boston. Qualification times are getting tougher to achieve and whilst the BQ is a global process the London GFA process is only open to UK residents. New York has also recently changed their process and Tokyo’s semi-elite programme has very tough qualification times. Via a tour operator, UK residents are not eligible for a London package and similarly US residents are not eligible for US packages. Charity places for Boston can require fundraising of over US$10,000. I think most six star finishers needed to explore different routes for their places…ballot, charity, time qualification, tour operator, sponsor/corporate place. I was determined to achieve this and I know that I have been fortunate. I am incredibly grateful to the team at Sports Tours International for helping to make it happen.

5x50 day 28. Four weeks completed with @run4wales Newport Half Marathon today. It’s been a while since my last official half where I’ve tested myself. A couple of weeks ago I felt the pinch a handful of miles in. Today would be a test. Gels in the pocket because I’ve been poor at fuelling lately. New @asicsrunninng #metaspeedskyparis on my feet. Vest, not tee as the sun was poking out. Not carrying fluid - taking it on at the water stations. Be prepared - and I was ready. Virtual pacer set on the watch for 8:15 per mile for plan A. Plan B was sub 2. Plan C to finish quicker than two weeks ago. First two miles too quick trying to hang on the coat tails of the 1:45 pacer. Slowed to a comfortable pace. Comfortable for the legs as they seemed to be the limiting factor after 27 days of running 5k or more. Heart rate comfortable. Faded a little through 9 and 10 and then picked up for a strong final two miles or so. 1:52:15 official time. I’m happy with that. 17 minutes slower than my PB - which I set 8 years ago. 60% age grade vs 66% age grade for my PB. Working my way back. Loved it and gave my all in the final straight - not even making a fuss for the cameras. Fab race. Great job by @shar_louise3 and @mattwardmc on the mic too!! Stuck around, said hello to many friends and cheered others in. Cranbrook Country Park parkrun Exciting stuff back to the original course which includes the grass section. it was fantastic to see so many turning out for this parkrun. One of the things I miss are the stats for my own personal reasons it always gave me a target to go after whether it was the course record or the age category record it was just fun to have something to look at and see if I could get close, which I don’t have any more! still, I get the opportunity to meet up with lots of people and have a fantastic 5K run. it was hard work out on the course with the headwind both times heading out to the far end. I finished in 17.03 and then headed back to work. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers. Newport 10km 45 min pacer, Sunday good deed done ✅. Remember good deeds are not just for Sunday. . For starters forgot my bib number so won’t be on the official results, strava indicates 44:56, I put my chip time to be around 44:50 but that’s not really important. My job was simple, give people a chance to hit 45 or just under, a job I enjoyed to the fullest today. Pacer breakdown ✳️ Pacing was good and honest, we started off slightly quicker than 7:11, chilled in the middle and brought it home nicely. ✳️ So nice to see so many familiar faces on the course, y’all made me feel like a local celebrity. Thanks for the love and shoutouts. ✳️ The last 4km I channeled my inner @rushbynature & @runwithrachel , screaming with love and passion for people to hold on and not let it slip. ✳️ If you are reading this Mari, I am sorry if I shouted too hard in that last 3km but it was needed, I was not going to let you give up after working so hard in the first 7km. Proud of you coming in at 44:46. ✳️ Well done to everyone who hung around the pace, you all did amazing and are legends. ✳️ Thanks for the opportunity @run4wales to pace & give back to the running community, it was so rewarding. ✳️ Lastly, thinking of volunteering, don’t think. . A lovely morning out with @werunnotts 🏃🏻‍♀️ at 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗿𝘂𝗻 Since Victoria and Dennis joined the team earlier this year, we got chatting and decided to meet up. I fancied a trip down to one of their local parkruns and so we decided on Wollaton, and I'm so glad we did. Set in the beautiful grounds and deer park, the parkrun route takes you around a golf course, under Wayne Manor, around a lovely courtyard and towards a lake before heading back to the start. Especially in the sunshine, the route was lovely as was the cafe for breakfast afterwards. Vic and I had a nice steady and chatty run/walk in 42 minutes, whilst Dennis ran his own parkrun in a speedy 24 minutes. Thank you both for a lovely morning and breakfast. Day 27 in the 5x50 house and all is well. Ok. Legs are still a bit heavy from racing Thursday and so I’m mindful not to push when I don’t need to. Tomorrow is @run4wales Newport Half and so I’m being cautious ahead of that. Blustery and cold on the seafront this morning for Porthcawl parkrun. But a very warm welcome from dear friends. Chatted up to the start whistle and stood near the back with the intention of taking it easy. And I did. 31:21 official time and it was fab. Chatting all the way. Just what the legs needed - not too much. Ticking over. Thank for the @asicsrunning accelerate waterproof jacket (which also is fabulous for wind blocking) and the long sleeve seamless top underneath which protected me from the elements. #gelkayano 30 on my feet, the cushioning of which protected me from too much impact. Tough but amazing run around Lady Bird Lake yesterday evening. Weather was muggy but suddenly the sun decided to come out and hit 31 degrees and no hiding from that. Needed a quick dip in the pool afterwards to cool down. Really enjoyed my running this week and will squeeze one more very short run in before flying home later. Looking forward to hugs from the kids (and them asking what I got them) and no doubt Martha is looking forward to me coming home so she can hide away and have 5 minutes to herself. 5x50 day 26. Minimum 5k every day for 50 days. Over halfway now. Heavy legged after racing last night. Heavy after eating lunch. Have I got a cold too? Feels like a very light one. Tired? Yep. Excuses, excuses. And all the ones I would use normally to perhaps have a rest day. But after 26 days there’s no option. Stayed local. Very local. Loops of 0.6 miles around the estate. Tip 4. Strength work, if you don’t do it, I can assure you will topple like the blocks in jenga. . This is not a victory post, this was my downfall in the marathon. I use to blame cramp on lack of salt but the reality is, my quads are just not strong enough and I am 💩 at strength work as @rushbynature eloquently pointed out. . I had a strain when i introduced proper strength work at the start of the block, after i got through it I thought I will lay off it out of fear of hurting myself again and took a calculated risk. I knew it would come back to bite me in those last miles and boy did it. . You can’t skip on it, it makes a huge difference in that last 10k especially when you are running at pace, you may have endurance but it’s nothing without the strength to see it through. You got to do it, it’s the difference between running a good or better a great marathon. Learn from my mistake people, do your strength work. Race Day Kit 👍🏻 No blisters, no chafing, no black toenails at all…in fact, other than some sunburn on my neck I came away from running a marathon on a very hot day in Boston in one piece…and I’ve not suffered since. I’m sure that we all give our race day kit a lot of thought beforehand…first and foremost will it be comfortable, will it work in whatever the weather throws at us on race day, is there room for everything you need to carry plus, of course, will it look good in the photos? I made a great choice although will admit that I nearly made the rookie error of ‘nothing new on race day’ when I bought an ASICS Special Edition Boston 2024 running vest in their store on Newbury Street!! So what was my race day kit that served me so well? 🎽 ASICS Nations Run Tank A super light and comfortable vest which was perfect on a very hot race day. Slightly cropped making it a great length. 🩳 ASICS Distance Supply Sprinter Shorts These really are the perfect shorts for a marathon…a deep pocket on each leg which is great for carrying a phone and all your fuel. There’s also a pocket across the back and straps for holding a jacket. Super light and comfortable with no riding up. 👟 ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ 25 My all-time favourite and most comfortable running shoes that I ran the Tokyo Marathon in last year so I knew they wouldn’t let me down! 🧦 ASICS Colour Camo Run Crew Socks These are slightly longer than I normally wear but what I trained in for my marathon block (I have them in a few funky colours) and are super comfortable…no danger of them slipping into your running shoes either. 🕶️ Goodr OG ‘Proud to be MASS Produced’ Boston Limited Edition Sunglasses These were only available in the US and I managed to pick up a pair in the well known Marathon Sports store on Bolyston Street when I arrived in Boston. 5x50 day 25. One of those days that’s easy. The Bridgend County Running League was formed to nurture friendly competition between our clubs. With a huge focus on participation - every runner counts and scores for the team - wherever they finish. We are extremely proud of @ogmorephoenixrunners and especially considering over 50% of our members represented Team Phoenix tonight around a great route by the sea. A large contingent of our recently graduated Zero 2 Hero runners also joined in the throng which is so wonderful to see!! My run was a tale of two halves. First mile the quickest I’ve run this year dipping under 7 minutes and I felt strong. Then it felt like some slowly pressed on the brakes. I couldn’t get my legs to tick over quick enough and I gradually faded only finding them again in the final sprint. 5.1k ish. 23:40. It’ll do. Gym rat 🐀 An MRI scan tomorrow morning will hopefully reveal the underlying issue with my knee once and for all🤞🏼 In the meantime I’ve been embracing the change in my training regime. It’s healthy and positive to reinvent yourself every now and then. For me it gets really boring doing the same thing over and over. I don’t like allowing myself to stagnate, I need variety and a constant change in order to stay stimulated. I’m a firm believer in seeing what else I can achieve rather than being a one trick pony. If this makes me Jack of all trades & master of none then so be it. For me being unable to run properly right now opens a new chapter and who knows where that might take me 🤷🏼‍♀️ Change is a good thing and not something to be feared, although this time it’s been forced on me rather than being a deliberate choice but hey variety is the spice right?! Tips 2 & 3. You really need to get uncomfortable to see growth and you need to fuel this discomfort properly. This is a bit of a read so please stay with me. . Slow Long runs are important of course but on their own it won’t cut it. I hear people say all the time you have to get your long runs in but never speed work. You need speed. . Some of us don’t like it (am in that camp) but those speed sessions are key, now speed is very individual I get that, we all have our different speed settings based on our abilities , but the more time spend being uncomfortable pace wise, it really does translate into building better endurance especially in those later stages. . For the first time thanks to @rushbynature (why you need a good coach) I did a variety of speed sessions , hated each and everyone at the beginning but it was more of fear of being uncomfortable for long periods but they were good for me. Even when i slowed down at the end , my ending this time was far better my first attempt. . Nutrition. Double breakfast were key on speed days, a lot of bagels were consumed this block as well as honey/peanut butter and thanks to @lorenpeta I am now addicted to overnight oats . And I don’t want to see any more eggs, I was egged out by the end of February. All in all, I had a pretty balanced diet to fuel and repair my body, didn’t hold back on my scotch bonnets though and I even ate more green stuff to the delight of @justrunchris . . Biggest lesson learnt was studying about carbohydrates and fueling during sessions, i was consuming too little. I need more to get better outputs. So enter 40g gels alongside @voomnutrition energy bars with 60g and carb drinks for proper fuelling pre sessions, worked a treat during training and the marathon. Again fuelling is individual, practise and work on it to see what works for you . The last mile… The iconic CITGO sign in Kenmore Square lets runners know that they are one mile from the finish of the Boston Marathon. This is shortly followed by the Boston Strong Bridge and then it’s not far until you can say those well known words ‘Right on Hereford, Left on Boylston’ as you hit the final straight and the deafening sounds of the cheering crowds. These last few milestones were emotional and I wanted to take it all in, so much so that at the top of Hereford Street I just took a moment and said a few quiet words before I made that last left turn onto Boylston Street. It had been a tough day…it was very hot and everything you hear about Boston is true, it’s a very hilly course! 5x50 day 24. Almost half way. I actually couldn’t wait to go out this evening and did so on arriving home. Breathing was easier again and heart rate stayed right down. It felt really good again. A slightly modified route that headed across the dual carriageway and along the boardwalk for an out and back. Mild conditions. The smell of the spring flora fills the air which always fills my heart with joy as it’s the indicator that we’re leaving the cold, darkness of winter behind properly. It’s taken longer than usual but it now feels like we’re here. So. Another fab run on this challenge which has properly got its hooks into me now and I’m delighted I started it again after so many years as it’s inspired me to properly set goals for the year ahead - and beyond. I’ve booked several races in the last few weeks while tackling it. Some bigger than others with some targets of speed and distance having been set. Racing tomorrow on the half way point. Can’t wait again. London Marathon edition 🏃🏻‍♀️🇬🇧 Let's take a look at what I wore: 🕶️ Goodr Lilac it like that ~ Can't beat goodr 😎! 🎒 ASICS Fujitrail Hydration Vest 7L ~ I carry a ton of fuel on long runs, including the marathon, so it was great for just that. Pockets galore so I could carry everything I needed. But it was heavy and warm, and I had to take it off at one point. 👕 ASICS Lite-Show T-shirt #gifted ~ comfortable but was too short for my bag and number to sit over it comfortably. I love the colour though, of course. 🧲 runr race number magnets ~ magnets are a bit of a pig to put on tbh, but they look fab. And they're now looking pretty on my fridge, until the next race! 👖ASICS Sprinter Shorts - 100% my favourite piece of kit for long runs. The only downside is the crappy suntan lines I end up with afterwards. 🧦 2000 mile London 2.0 socks ~ my favourite socks! Not only for the colour, but I had no issues. No blisters or discomfort. 👟 ASICS NovaBlast 4 ~ worked perfectly, super comfy throughout and I put it down to these that my feet actually didn't hurt afterwards. Along with a pair of granny knickers from Asda and a fab sports bra from Shock Absorber, but I don't know the style. 5x50 day 23. Minimum 5k every day for 50 days. @ogmorephoenixrunners training in Parc Slip. The nature reserve just a mile from our house. It’s a bit of a climb to get there but worth it. A fab group showed up as the sun slowly went to sleep but still gracing us with warmth. It’s a lush route and there was lots of chatter as we looped around. Fab catch up with @lea.ve.khan who’s smashing her return to running. We sang happy birthday to one who was celebrating and stretched back in the car park before I made my descent back home through the trees and along the boardwalk. Lesson 1 learnt from @londonmarathon training. A coach is beneficial. . If you can, get you someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you or they have always known you could be. . I always thought I would be a coach’s worst nightmare but I would have been lying to myself I f I said I could have done any of this on my own, knowing me I would have been lazy and winged most things. But @rushbynature took me under her wing, gave me a lot tough love which I needed and structure, but more importantly belief. Half the time when I felt lazy, I would say well she has taken the time to invest her time in me, the least I can do is give my best in the sessions. It was a very symbiotic relationship, she let me control the easy runs but the tough sessions were hers, it was a well balanced journey. Sometimes you just need someone to hold you accountable. I can’t thank you enough @rushbynature, I know she knows more is in there, we might just have to run this thing back again. . What am I trying to say? Apps and printable plans are good to a degree and requires a certain level of discipline on your part but nothing beats that human interaction/connection. If you can, I would highly recommend investing in a coach. . Not an AD, these names am about to drop are not paying me in snacks or goodies but Holly and @pete_stables are great, I have been blessed to know and speak to a few people like @garyhouse_ , @natalie_pt.run.coach , @stu_likes_to_run @sabrunsmiles and they are always open to have a call or conversation. . It might just be what you need to get to that next level to get you smiling like me when you hit that finish line like the photo above. Have a think about it. It all started 7 years ago!! Sunday 23 April 2017 was my first ever marathon and only intended to be a one-off so that I could tick off that bucket list item. If you ran in London on Sunday you may be relieved that it’s all over and have sighed “never again” when you crossed the finish line or you may have got such a buzz or runners’ high that you’re eagerly thinking about what could be next!! Looking back, I can’t say that I got an immediate “when can I do it again?” feeling, but I did keep up with my running, took part in some more events and by the time I’d run the New York Marathon just over two years later I was definitely addicted to that “finish line feeling”. I seriously had no idea though that it would take me on this exciting adventure…it’s been such fun and I’ve certainly learnt a lot about myself, especially my mental strength and resilience, in the process. It’s also confirmed that age really is just a number and doesn’t need to be a barrier to taking on anything new, however scary. London Marathon I had no plans to run London this year, but that all changed when I was talking to my friend Richard Whitehead, Who asked if I would be interested in pacing him at London. Of course, I said yes, I would love to! This has been 13 years in the making since we first met each other at a training camp in Lanzarote. 10 years ago I joined Richard when he was doing 40 marathons in 40 days. 2016 he started the Robin Hood Marathon which I went on to win. Over the years we’ve kept in contact. Which led us to this opportunity. Day of the marathon, I tried not to eat too much for breakfast and joined Richard and the team at the hotel entrance before getting on the bus to the start. We headed into hospitality where some of the celebrities were and watched as many were getting ready for their big run Richard had to go off and do a few bits to get ready for his attempt at a new Guinness World Record. I certainly recognise a few people, but I didn’t want to ask for selfies and disturb them. Before the start, me and Richard went out for a little warmup and managed to see my friend Stephen Cousins and had a quick chat. Time soon came around for the start and they got the elite runners on the start line with everyone else slowly joining the back of them and me and Richard more or less in between them. Richard gave me a bum bag to carry with 10 gels in for him to give out every 5 km. ** full write up on Facebook Adam Tango Holland ** He had to beat 2:42:52, as I came running down the final straight I did my normal big jump over the finish line and Richard was there. I got the fantastic news that he beat his world record finishing in 2.42.01 (my time 2.43.37) I was extremely happy and proud of him!! 5x50 day 22. Minimum 5k every day for 50 days. After work and after grocery shopping it was time to sneak in a run before Jo cut my hair and we made tea. Ordinary things that we work our activities around. Fitting them in when we can. Only three weeks ago I’d probably just have perched on the couch and not run on a Monday. I stepped out of the front door and by chance Rhuanydd was running past and tagged along for the 5k. From an evening where I was expecting a solitary run - it ended up being a chatty loop of the area. Thoroughly enjoyed. Medal Monday. A day not just to be proud but remembering to be grateful. . The most important thing now besides recovery is to say thank you, thank you to @blacktrailrunners for being at the forefront of down breaking barriers and making sure there are opportunities for people who look like me to do amazing and hard things such as @londonmarathon . It gets bigger & better every time and I know we just getting started. Thank you to everyone who supports in one way or the other and every ally involved. . Now there is a common misconception that I have done loads of marathon, but this was only my 2nd ever road marathon. Over the next coming days I will share what I have learnt from this marathon and the training, don’t worry this won’t be a 10 top tips on how to run fast or that sort of waffle, am not some guru, just a regular guy trying to get better, maybe it will help someone. . . In the meantime, priorities are ✳️ Recover well and walk loads with the dogs ✳️ Continue to eat & sleep ✳️ Get ready to pace @run4wales Newport 10km this Sunday. Inspired by watching the London Marathon coverage and tracking friends, I decided to run again today. First double run day in a while. Made it up to 10.5 miles for the day and 32 miles for the week. Still day 21 of the 5x50 challenge. Sea air. Slow paced. Breathing deep to absorb the early evening. Stopped for photos. Especially of the new addition to the seafront - a rather interestingly decorated and huge piece of driftwood. Sat down a while by the water and thought of all the fabulous inspiring stories I’ve heard and witnessed today. Podium Dulwich 5K I had no idea that this would be the outcome of the race after parkrun in the morning, walking lots of miles throughout the day and at 1.30 pm picking up my NEW ASICS metaspeed Sky+ in white (they didn’t have the blue ones I wanted). Jogging to the event 1.5 miles as I didn’t want to be late and needed to collect my number. I managed to chat with a couple of people before there was a 5-minute warning shouted out. This was wave 2 with 15min to 16min runners (I put down 15.59 as it’s my best this year). There was no point in me standing at the front so I waited at the back of the group thinking I would be hopefully getting under 16 min. 3-2-1 go I was 2nd from last as we set off. I found myself at a comfortable pace as started overtaking a couple of people. I certainly wasn’t following the racing line as I didn’t want to get in the way of the others. I remember looking at my watch for the 1st mile and it was under 4.50. Which surprise me!! She’s feeling pretty amazing and I just tried to carry on at a strong pace. It was 3 laps around the course. To my surprise, the 2nd mile was also under 5 minutes, and then it just dawned on me that I was on for a PB and at that point, I wanted to keep the pace up! I could see the finish in sight and the second tick up, I kept it going all the way through the finish and after stopping my watch on 15.30!!!! I was extremely over the moon and surprised to get a PB, but I had to wait for the official results for the exact seconds. I finished 25th out of 66 finishers in my wave and my official PB is 15.27 (Best 15.31 from 2018). Made my way back to the train station to get to the hotel to join Richard and the team for a meal ready for the London Marathon the next day and I may have had a cheeky meat feast pizza. This is your reminder that you can do hard things while growing a human. If you want to. Deciding to fastpack the West Highland Way at 6 & a bit months pregnant was an idea with a number of incentives. Firstly, it’s a route I love; having ran & hiked it previously, I thought it would be a great adventure as a trio to make some extremely special memories. Secondly I have had the fear of losing part of my identity throughout pregnancy; a result of what society feeds to women; you are going to be a mum and nothing else; you have to choose between careers, passions, & starting families. That’s a wonderful & incredibly respectful role in itself, & comes with immense pride, however, for me, I hope to continue my running and exercise not only for my mental & physical health, but for that of my little one when he’s here. Active kids take inspiration from active parents. Lastly, there was an element of empowering women; pregnancy is a magical experience & women should feel strong & confident for as much as possible. For me this comes from doing things I love, & still challenging myself in a safe & healthy way. If you want to take 9 months to relax that’s absolutely ok, but if you want to get out & continue how you were living before pregnancy to some degree, that’s also ok. I had appointments with midwives & consultants to discuss the health of us both before we set off, & at the end 🩵 Pregnancy mental health & empowerment is something I feel extremely passionate about & will do my best to keep shouting about it. Pregnant women- we are incredible. And that’s the @londonmarathon Sunday long run done. 3hrs12 on the clock, a 30 minute PB, not bad for a day’s work. . . A quick run through of today’s run ✳️ What does the coach say about starting too quick, well clearly didn’t pay attention did I 🙄 ✳️ The crowd support in London is top notch, you guys rock ✳️ Amazing spending the first 10 miles with fellow black trail runner @simbarashe ✳️ Again the last 10km felt like a ride with Hades, cramp central, show me a runner that doesn’t strength train enough, this guy 😜. ✳️ Fuelling was good, thanks to @voomnutrition ✳️ I just ran a 30 minute PB, I am damn proud and estactic. Can I put it on my LinkedIn profile? ✳️ My wife @ladygarrick is amazing, her support was immerse today. ✳️ And thank you to @rushbynature , she cracked the whip, got my ass in shape and I was in a much better position that I would have even been doing this on my own. ✳️ Huge support from the @asicsfrontrunner crew, @run.dem.crew and that boost from @blackgirlsdorunuk at the end when I needed it most. . . Initial thoughts, more to come later. In the meantime, I will wipe the salt off my face, replace it with some ice cream and triple cheese burger. I have earned it. . 5x50 day 21. Last year I ran the virtual @londonmarathon as a parkrunathon - 8 parkruns in one day. Raising money for Stormbreak. I shared the plan on social media and a few turned up to join me on the journey. That really warmed my heart. One of those people was Jess. We’d never met but she just turned up on the start line of Cosmeston parkrun to support me on that course and donate to the cause. I happened to see her last week and she told me, inspired by the challenge last year, she and a friend, Andrea, were tackling it this year for @bigmoose.charity, another charity very close to my heart. So I made a plan. To turn up and support them on their journey because I know how much it meant to me when people turned up to support me. So I joined for Llanishen parkrun and Cardiff parkrun, their 2nd and 3rd of the day, to give moral support. A fabulous 6.2 miles spent with amazing people doing an amazing thing to help people struggling with their mental health. Something that is so vitally important. The work they do really does save lives. Wonderfully uplifting morning. Well done Jess and Andrea - keep up the good work for the rest of the day!! 5x50 day 20. Minimum 5k every day for 50 days. The habit is now formed and it’s the easiest day of the week to head out with the @parkrunuk passion having already taken hold. It is very rarely missed. “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside”. Especially when the sun is beating down. Still a chill to the air and a slight breeze but as near to perfect conditions as you could get. Good turnout from @ogmorephoenixrunners and said quick good mornings before grabbing photos. New @asicsrunning singlet arrived in time to be worn and was kindly gifted by @asicsfrontrunner #ad. Brand new #metaspeedskyparis on my feet for the first time - bought myself as they look so fantastic and everything said about them drew me in. They were fab. Started at the front and pushed off quick. 7:02 first mile felt quite comfortable although I could feel it in the legs. Didn’t think I could keep it up over the “hills” and I was right. 7:13 and 7:16 followed. Not too much of a drop but enough to mean a season’s best was just out of reach despite @t_mahoneyy giving me a supportive push at the turnaround. A 5:45 sprint brought me in 8 seconds behind my best and 2 seconds off the shoulder of Tom. 22:16. Age grading 68%. Felt fabulous. Jumped on scanning to help with the busy period and then dashed off to the cafe for refreshments and chat. Another fab morning that warmed the heart. 444 done. 325 in Porthcawl. Wormwood Scrubs parkrun Finding the closest parkrun to where I was staying and this was 3 miles away. Walking to the event and ended up pumping into someone I knew who was going to Fulham Palace, I would’ve joined them but I’ve done that parkrun before. When I got to Wormwood there was a pretty cold wind even with the sun being out. They were using the winter course which was almost 3 lap. The course was all on grass which was nice. I didn’t want to have to run fast so I planned to run with whoever was at the front when we were on our way, there were 3 of us, Myself, Tyler and Malachai. It was a very comfortable pace and we even chatted on our way round. Each mile we got a little bit faster and I knew with the finish being downhill it shouldn’t be too hard to take the lead as I do love a good downhill sprint! I finished in 17:50 - Tyler 17:54 - Malachai 17:59 PB. There were a lot of tourists and several people doing the marathon tomorrow as well so I wish you all the very best and enjoy your experience. It’s @londonmarathon weekend! . One of the best races in the world!. . Good luck to everyone running tomorrow, I think I have you all loaded in the tracker, can’t wait to see how everyone does. . My advice for the race would be: • Don’t get carried away at the start and go off too quick. • Break the race down into the different landmarks and aim to reach them. • Feed off the crowd, they are amazing. Especially on Tower Bridge. • Maintain your target pace and look to overtake the person in front of you in the latter stages. Don’t worry about people passing you in the first half. • Enjoy It! You’ve put all the hard work in during training. This is the victory lap! . Did I mention I was running a marathon? 🤔🤪 This is my third dance 🕺 and the first where I have followed a structured plan using @runna_coach Starting on the 1st of Jan 2024 and culminating tomorrow where I join thousands of runners from across the world. @londonmarathon is one of 6 major events in the running calendar, making it a special event. Representation has become my passion to inspire and encourage our communities to put their running shoes on. Did you know that in 2022 , 89% of participants were from a white background & in 2021, it was 93% 😲 (Sky News) Despite this, the future is bright.. London is buzzing with so many running clubs. During my long runs with @runnersldn I saw diversity at play. Running through Hyde Park and brushing shoulders with all the beautiful faces. (Thank you Nancy for your advice 💪) And of course @thenovway whom I am representing, I'd like to give a massive shout out to Leon, Tara, Roseanna and Sub 3 Mo for bringing us together and guiding us along the way. 5x50 day 19. @ogmorephoenixrunners plod and a pint. Social chatty miles around Brackla from, and back to, the Hunters Lodge. 2.5 miles per loop with the second in the opposite direction. The sun was out and everyone was in good spirits. Have missed running company this week and so it was lush to spend time chatting as the miles melted away. Lovely that Jo came with me for the social element. Love this about these sessions.
