I really enjoyed this book so much. If I hadn’t been so tired I’d have probably stayed up and read it in one day aside from the few chapters I read in the evening after finishing up Bride. This was such a nostalgic story for me for some reason, though I’m not sure why since I don’t share many of the same experiences. I think reading the parts of young Macy and Elliot brought be back to my own time as a young teenager/adult and how those feelings of falling in love with that one person for the first time felt. I’ve only read one other Christina Lauren book (The Unhoneymooners), and this has a very different vibe. I think the Christina Lauren writing duo definitely have the potential to become a favorite contemporary romance author. Now to head back into Powerless to finally finish that one, because I am STRUGGLING with it, and I want to take my kindle off airplane mode 😂 So it needs to be finished so it can get returned to the library finally.

Do you remember your favorite book as a child? I have a few, but The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe will always be one of my top faves. This one is a bit of an odd ball in the collection. Captain Carrot and the Final Ark, the superhero team known as the Zoo Crew must band together to stop the villainous Starro the Conqueror from destroying their world, racing against time to prevent the apocalypse. what i like about this is the art style which really reflects the comic book aesthetic of the 1980s when the series was originally published. ❦ ════ •⊰❂ Book Review ❂⊱• ════ ❦ Never Let Me Go ~ I don't really know how to feel about this one (but I still defs give it a 5 star). Which is strange, because normally I know quite well how I feel about a book after reading it. It's not that I didn't like it, or enjoyed reading it. Maybe it's literally just how Kathy described other "normal" people seeing Hailsham students - kind of like seeing a spider. Makes you uncomfortable in the least, and revulsion at most. It's so odd, I think it's sort of repulsive because it feels realistic, like something people would really do in this world. It's a depressive retelling of character's lives we know will end in a specific way. The saddest part for me is, I guess, Kathy herself retelling it. I can't go much into that without getting spoilery if you really have no idea what the story is about, but yeah... As far as I remember, it didn't traumatize me as much as the movie. I'm going to re-watch it and see how it compares. [Update] I have rewatched the movie and I think seeing it all play out is definitely more, I guess, uncomfortable, than reading it from Kathy's perspective. I think that's partly because Kathy recounts it in a (basically) idyllic way, whereas in the movie everything just feels grey and you don't get Kathy's inner thought sort of positive spin on it. Either way I think this book is well worth a read, Ishiguro has a very entrancing way of writing that I really enjoyed.

I've always been a mood reader, and because my eldest daughter is flying off to Sydney this week to compete in her first national pageant (Miss Galaxy Australia) I thought I'd revisit this old childhood favourite by Caroline B Cooney, 'Twenty Pageants Later.' Okay so I read it in about 45 minutes but it was still worth it. Such a sweet, relatable story about a middle-schooler growing up in the shadow of her elder sister, Dane, a beauty queen. Most of the pageant stuff in here isn't as relatable today as it was when it was written, (or at least I hope it's not!) but it's got a lot about finding your own strengths and being kind to others, so I really enjoyed it. During my last trip back home to my parents, I scrolled through my books to decide which to take with me and which to read next. One book I found again and made it on both of those lists is The Little Prince. Not because I had not read it before, but to reread. It’s a Childrens book but there is so much wisdom in between the lines. So it's on my list as a light study book in-between the other 'grown-up' books. Certain books mean a lot to me. Some for their content, others for their previous owners, and some for the memories of those who gifted them to me. The Little Prince has a note on the first page as it was a gift from a friend from many years ago. "[It should accompany you and always remind you that you have friends who laugh with you.] Hab dich lieb, Steffi" With every stage of life, we win and we lose friends. It's unfortunately the way things go. We grow apart, we move away, As life unfolds, we inevitably part with some friends while welcoming new ones. It's the ebb and flow of life. Steffi has always held a special place in my heart, though we drifted apart during our final university years long time ago and now reside in different cities, even countries. Yet, isn't it remarkable to still hold onto these tokens of our past, filled with fond memories? Tennis Shoes is my ticket to the #1937club hosted by @simondavidthomas and @kaggsy59. This is a Noel Streatfeild I missed reading as a child because my library then didn’t have it. As with her other ‘shoes’ books, it features children discovering and nurturing a talent and learning some life lessons along the way. The children here are the Heath family (twins Jim and Susan, their headstrong and annoying younger sister Nicky, and their rather precocious younger brother David) and the talent, obviously, is tennis. Much of Tennis Shoes focuses on everyday life and the more mundane aspects of learning to play tennis - practicing, scraping together enough money to pay for club memberships, court hire, coaching and gear, and the discipline and hard work required to become a top player. I enjoyed Streatfeild’s vivid characters (Annie the cook and Pinny the governess/housekeeper/general dogsbody are particularly delightful) and rich domestic details, and found her depiction of middle class family life and the prevailing attitudes in that era interesting (and somewhat amusing 😉). The parents are largely hands-off (Mrs Heath barely makes an appearance!), measles, mumps and chicken pox do the rounds, money is ‘tight’ but they still have a couple of domestic servants, and Grandfather is so horrified by the prospect of David being educated by Pinny (i.e. a woman) that he immediately arranges for him to go to boarding school! However, while I like watching tennis, reading about it turned out it be a bit dull. I much prefer Streatfeild’s books about the worlds of theatre, ballet and ice-skating and I know ten-year-old me would agree. I also found the pushiness of the adults off-putting - one of the things I always liked about her shoes books was that the children loved what they were doing and all of the ambition and motivation to succeed came from within. Actually I got halfway through the House of Hades and then got distracted by other stories thankfully when I got back to this one though I remembered most of what I’d read from the previous three. •I forgot how much I loved the snark… all the demigods seem to just ooze out the snark. Especially Percy and Leo. Leo might just take Percy’s snark master crown. •The adventure keeps you hooked and it’s hard to put down. Sometimes you just let out a breath and go oh 😮💨 man lay off these poor kids because it seems like every corner they turn bad gets even worse 😂 but at the same time you get to watch the seven grow through every challenge that they face and learn something new about each one. • Usually I’m not a fan of multiple pov’s and flip flopping from perspective to perspective but the way Rick does it is so concise.
