I'm telling you now, if I had read this as a teenager, it would have become my whole personality. I adore anything with a paranormal element, ghosts and mystery and this book had it in spades. There was great mental health representation with Lila being diagnosed with BPD and how she coped being shown through her inner thoughts. Stars and Smoke #1 @marieluthewriter YA Romance Thriller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Marie Lu is a favorite YA writer of mine so when I saw @fiercereads offering book two, I quickly grabbed book one to catch up. Winter and Sydney are great main characters. Winter is the latest, greatest young singer that made it big quickly. When the daughter of a very famous mob boss requests him at her birthday party, a covert ops group places young Sydney as his bodyguard. She is their youngest but most advanced spy. She is bold and tough with skills to match. When untrained Winter is recruited for this mission, Sydney has many feelings against him being involved. Winter is great for the humble musician just looking for real connections that don’t revolve around his music. Sydney is a spit-fire that let’s nothing get in her way of accomplishing missions. Both are seeking what they don’t realize is in each other. The romance starts slow and innocent and blooms into heartfelt caring that was fun to watch. With life-threatening situations for both characters, the adventure is high with many intense moments. Marie Lu is an author my kids and I started reading years ago. She is great at implementing diverse characters that most anyone can relate to. She tends to have great adventurous stories with low content which make them perfect for younger teens and more. This is another favorite I will add to my list and I can’t wait for book two! QOTD: It’s my hubs bday today! Thanks @netgalley & @delacortepress for the ARC & to my wonderful buddy reader friends & sleuths @mamas.high.on.books & @itsallaboutbooksandmacarons! I loved our theories & ponderings. Bel, 18, has been overshadowed by her mother Rachel Price’s disappearance her whole life. But when her family has to film a true crime documentary about it, which Bel is keen to get over with, Rachel is back miraculously, literally out of thin air. Bel is suddenly obsessed & can’t think about anything except where her mother was all these years, whether she’s lying or even dangerous. Can she trust the one person who is meant to be her ultimate protector when all she’s known & loved is her father? Having loved #AGoodGirlsGuideToMurder I went into this with high expectations & ended up with somewhat of an underwhelming/mixed feelings. Will try to list what worked & didn’t for me – 👍 ➡️The premise – so unique & instantly grabs our attention ➡️Bel’s characterization & realistic portrayal of her- ˃ struggles growing up the way she did ˃ utter shock when her mother is back in her life ˃ dilemmas & internal battle about trusting her ˃ guileless innocence & blind faith in her father ➡️Bel’s determination & smart thinking were admirable. I could really feel her burning need for answers & truth. ➡️Bel & Carter’s friendship – so crucial for the plot ➡️The conceptualization of the documentary 🎬 – the kindle that sets everything in motion ➡️Plenty of gasp worthy twists ➡️Clever misdirection ➡️Complex multi-layered plotting ➡️Wonderful side characters – especially the filming crew 👎 ➡️Inadequate justification behind the hook of the plot ➡️Execution & conclusion of the documentary – I expected so much more & a better ending ➡️The ending went too far with dramatics & included super human elements for the characters ➡️Too neatly tied up – I understood the need for it, but was there a better way? With that said, although this is not my favorite from Jackson, I’d still look forward to reading her next books! ⁉️How often do you misplace things & find them later when you aren’t looking for them 😉🤭?

The story begins with the mysterious death of Ainsley Behre, mother of five and founder of Behre Academy. This painful loss creates a leadership vacuum in a family already living in crisis mode. At the time of Ainsley’s death, her youngest child Dom is under investigation for his girlfriend’s murder. He says he’s innocent, but even his own siblings doubt him. Dom has been ostracized by his family for so long, no one really knows him. Events after the Behre family matriarch’s death, are told from Sunny’s point of view. A senior at Behr Academy, Sunny is left a sticky note by her mother saying only “Take care of Dom.” Soon after Sunny and Dom return to school, a student is found on a hallway floor, brutally murdered. And Dom is standing over the body, covered in blood. Interspersed with the present day events are excerpts from a diary kept by a teenage Ainsley. Atmospherically dark, these eerie and foreboding entries provide a glimpse into the childhood of both parents, who grew up together on a cattle ranch. Sambury is skilled in weaving dual timelines, so when past and present events collide, the two big reveals amplify each other. The author is also adept at managing a large cast of characters, passing suspicion around and keeping the reader guessing. The favoritism, bickering, and jealousy between siblings is common to any family drama, and serve to ground the paranormal elements. While Tender Beasts did not match my love of Delicious Monsters, I did enjoy the ride and recommend the book to YA readers who enjoy creepy mysteries. ❓Did you attend a private or public school? Putting aside the fact that the rating might be inflated on my part, there was a lot about the story that gave the energy of early NCIS episodes. Suspense bled into an unnatural calm, which then ultimately revealed itself in a climax that was satisfying, albeit typical. Obviously, this is a book aimed at teenagers, so don’t go into it expecting knock-your-socks-off terror. My 💭 s: Very campy horror that is a fast read but was not too memorable. Olivia and Reagan, two girls trying to find out why their lives are connected to murders at Camp Lost Lake. Olivia because of DNA mysteries and Reagan because she's been on the run with her mom who has been thought to have committed the crimes. Present day the camp is being opened under a new name but the terror is still being brought down upon that who are there to open it. I figured out a lot of things before they were revealed but it was interesting to find out why the missed were occurring. This is a psychological thriller with a bunch of twists and turns that will make you want to keep reading. While it's a relatively short book, the plot is intriguing and the characters realistic. You could certainly, as I did, finish this book in one sitting. I did really enjoy this book, but I can't say it was the best of its genre, or even in the topmost picks - it had a delightfully creepy atmosphere, but in places felt a little underdeveloped and rushed. In saying that, I would say that this book would probably sit well with the teen thrillers of the 90's Fear Street era. A few less jump-scares and a slightly older audience, perhaps, but it's still a very story-based book that focuses on plot as opposed to character development. You might call thriller ‘Swimfan’ (2002) a teenage Fatal Attraction, except that its target audiences are teenagers who will never even have heard of `Fatal Attraction,' let alone seen it. The plot: Ben Cronin (Jesse Bradford) has it made. He's a high school swimming champion about to get picked up by Stanford University, his cute girlfriend Amy (Shiri Appleby) adores him, and he's the most popular kid in his class. Everything's great... until he meets his number one fan, new girl Madison (Erika Christensen), who seduces him into having some PG-13 nookie in the swimming pool. She tells him it's just a one-night stand, but he's barely zipped up before she's following him everywhere, filling his inbox with emails, and threatening to tell his girlfriend about their little secret. The challenge in plotting thrillers is that, to create thrills, you often need to cut corners, eg have people turn up and not have to explain how they got there. The trick is always to do so without the audience thinking, ‘What the...?’ or ‘Oh come on, really?’. Here Madison seems to appear from out of nowhere in the most unlikely places, and at just the right time. Book Review The Cellar By: Natasha Preston ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 This book has a lot of mixed reviews and oh, how I can relate and agree with most all of them the good and the bad. I really enjoyed this book. I'm not a perfectionist, so the things that weren't "perfect" in this book didn't bother me and that's probably why I liked it. I don't sit there and pick through everything I see wrong. I don't do that in any book I read. I try to get in and picture what I'm reading. This book I could definitely do that with! I did get annoyed with the frequent stabbing scenes as there were quite a few. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich den 2. Teil am besten fand, und ich das Hörbuch des ersten Teils zu schnell gehört habe. Ich habe die drei Teile von April bis Januar gehört, daher verschwimmt jetzt einiges Pip ist alles andere als normal, typisch, aber trotzdem überwiegend nachvollziehbar.🫶 Ich hatte Schwierigkeiten die einzelnen Charakter auseinanderzuhalten, da sie alle gleich klangen. Dennoch mochte ich auch die Nebencharaktere.🧡 Der ganze Crimeaspekt, der sich durch alle Teile durchzieht, das ganze interessant gestaltet.📚 Emotional war ich nicht nah am Geschehen, aber das ist nicht notwendig. To say this movie had an influence on me as a youth is an understatement. It appealed to me in so many ways; the sisterhood of the coven, the power of the spells, and the pride that comes with esoteric knowledge. The Craft came out in 1996 and featured some of the hottest young actors of the time, who portray Catholic high school students. At the time, it seemed such a dichotomy, but now I know there is a thin line between liturgy and craft. Robin Tunney plays light Sarah, the "natural witch," born with powers and steeped in grief. We see this theme show up in Disney Queen Elsa. Terrifying in her powers but learning to yield them for good. On the flip side is dark Nancy, who would see everyone and everything destroyed for her god, Manon. Filmmakers used real curses and incantations in the movie but saw fit to make up a fictional god as the subject. Reports came out of strange weather and technical issues, causing crew injuries and filming delays. God will not be mocked. I can confidently say that this movie was the catalyst to me seeking out withcraft as a spiritual expression and that I am not alone in saying so. I'm grateful that God plucked me off that path many years ago and protected me while I willfully engaged in it. It's seeing a surge in popularity again. Everything old is new again. She and Travis Bell, another 18 year old whose father died in a showdown with a different killer, become the new unit. Emma interviews The Artist, who has information about an active killer that the fbi wants caught. Soon, Emma is snared in a web of murderers and special agents… Ok, this was fabulous. I don’t do crime stuff usually but this was a book club pick so I said sure, I’ll give it a shot. The writing was taut, the cultural stuff from the 80s was interesting texture, and the killers (especially The Artist) were rightfully scary. I didn’t sleep UNWELL after reading this, but I did have some weird dreams. I am curious how there’s a sequel (one that I don’t know much about)… what could happen next? THAT ENDING. When I tell you I was not expecting to be crying with a knot in my throat at 3pm while making my protein pancakes! This book was a rollercoaster. I actually think it should be used in curriculums to discuss the complexity of “justice”⚖️ I could go on and on about this book, my oh my🤩 Ravi is now THE standard of book boyfriends, thank you. Pip was such a complex character, and while I didn’t always agree with how she handled things, I think her character is an amazing gateway to discussing PTSD and how difficult it can be to live and let yourself be loved while dealing with such a thing. The reason this is not 5 stars like the previous book is that I personally don’t agree with how Pip handled herself here. I think there were better ways to deal with the Bad Guy, ways that would have made the conversation about police and justice even more interesting. But oh well, I don’t want to ruin what I think it’s one of the best trilogies of the time with too much lamenting of things we cannot change (or can we? Maybe the TV adaptation will take a different ending road). Book Review: "Five Survive" by Holly Jackson. The book starts with 6 teenagers getting stranded in a remote area in a 31feet RV with no way to get help from outside. I sat back for the usual teen drama with hormones and theatrics but I was proved wrong. The terror that starts with a bang slowly builds up, with secrets and doubts piling up, with unexpected twists and turns until the final crescendo..it was a veritable opera of a thriller.. Granted the writing was slow and as the story takes place within a small space the descriptions are lengthy and repetitive. But when the plot thickens and pressure mounts and the good and bad that is inherent in everyone spewing forth, this book becomes worthy of being called page turner. Oh wow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The first books feels like it was just there as a necessary prelude and introduction for this gem to exist. This was a GREAT story. One of my favourite reads of the year. I actually have been listening to this trilogy as an audiobook but I’m loving them so much that you bet I’ll be buying a nice physical copy of each. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Pip is “morally grey heroine” at its best. She has violent bursts, she breaks into private property, she lies and manipulates… she’s not so much “a good girl”, at least not by the end of this book for sure. The twists in the story keep you on your toes, and her amateur sleuth skills sound so mundane… internet (and a fair share of real life) stalking, interviewing people (even when they don’t want it)… it almost makes you feel like anyone could be solving mysteries, making this an unlikely relatable read. Exciting, mysterious, and emotional. "Day 14: "Totally Killer." I really wanted to like this film; I had seen some favourable reviews. However, I just couldn't get into it. I'm not sure if it was the overall look and feel, but it came across as a very watered-down teen horror flick. At times, it almost felt like I was watching something akin to "Riverdale." This early impression might have tainted my experience, as I found myself almost tuning out. "Totally Killer" felt incredibly average in every aspect. In fact, even as I'm writing this review, I've already forgotten much of what happened in the third act. Personally, I'd recommend giving it a pass, but remember that just because I didn't like it doesn't mean you won't.
