BOOK REVIEW-Adult Fantasy Standalone (No Iron Flame content?! Crazy right 🤪) There was LOTS to enjoy about this book! It’s been a long time since I’ve felt a connection to the characters in the way QoD made me feel. The character dynamics were written so well. Their motivators, their fears, their bond—it was palpable. I thought the story was also so interesting! Time magic amongst Demi gods and one “falling from grace” because she developed a conscious. The pacing of the story was perfect. So action-packed, high-stakes, and who doesn’t love a heist?! Unfortunately the world-building fell really flat for me. We start out in a dirty cell that was giving me medieval vibes but by the end of the book someone is saying “dude” and “hold up.” They have guns but they use letters for communication. I very much think there was some missed editing for consistency. I also REALLY REALLY did not like how the multiple POV changed from third person to first person halfway through the book. I don’t see the need for that? I also felt the author went wayside with descriptions of things that weren’t integral to the story. We learn a lot about buildings and passageways but VERY LITTLE about what the characters look like other than their ages, about 1/3 into the story. Also, we learn very little about Balthazar’s family, other than his great love for them, and then all of a sudden, conveniently his dad was also a hobbyist map maker, just when they needed it?? I feel like that’s a lazy way to try and close a plot hole that could have been closed earlier in the storyline. QoD starts out very strong and ends strong. I just wish there would have been some shifts in the prioritization of world-building and plot-hole management. I ended at 3 stars because I was invested. I cared and wanted to know what would happen with each character in this band of thieves crew. The story was also propulsive and intriguing. I found myself looking forward to picking it up each night. While there were let downs for me, I know others will enjoy it as much if not more than I did! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you are looking for romance, you won’t find that here, we have a little but mostly what we have is familial and friendship based love and character development. There is some violence and some gore but it is not majorly descriptive , just enough to have an idea but not so much to where I felt it was sickening. What I truly liked ,without spoiling too much ,is that our protagonists are not your typical “I must save the world “ types, they are to some extent realistic and cowards. One of the most common questions I get is about where I get my inspiration from. Honestly, it’s a question I dread, because it has no clear answer. The muse doesn’t arrive on a dependable Tuesday morning armed with a ream of ideas and enough caffeine to lure me out of bed. More often than not, ideas arrive in the quiet space between the sounds of my children’s laughter. It sneaks in unseen as I sit in the sun and with a whisper and a kiss and a feeling of deja vu it slithers away again. And I’m left behind, sorting through memories of lives I haven’t lived. … at least, not in *this* universe
