🕸️book review💀 The Reformatory by Tananarive Due is a historical horror novel set in Jim Crow Florida. The protagonist, Robert Stephens Jr. is sent to the Reformatory as a punishment following a trivial scuffle with a white boy. He soon finds out that this school is very, very haunted - but it’s not the ghosts, or haints, that he really should be worried about, as the living can be much more terrifying than the dead. This was a challenging read, tough to get through at times - and to think that so many people went through very similar experiences but in real life is just infuriating and heart-wrenching. The characters felt so real and well-rounded, and I immediately took a liking to Robert and his sister Gloria. Their relationship nearly brought me to tears several times - Gloria is probably one of the fiercest characters I’ve met, fighting with all her might to get her beloved little brother out of danger. The pacing starts as maybe a little slow in the beginning but boy, does it pick up. The last 100 or so pages made my heart rate speed up and I was simultaneously afraid to keep reading and unable to put the book down. The author really zoomes in on the scenes building up to the climax as we follow each character almost minute by minute, all the while uncertain about their survival. Rarely has a book kept me on edge in this way! This was definitely an unforgettable read, and I’m looking forward to picking up more by Tananarive Due. I would recommend this book not only to horror fans but to anyone looking for a deep and meaningful historical fiction novel that is also a page-turner. I especially recommend listening to the audiobook; the narrator, Joniece Abbott-Pratt does such an amazing job bringing all the characters to life 🫶🏻 Creepiness: 👻👻/5 Gore: 🔪/5 Scare factor: 🕷️🕷️.5/5 My rating: 🦇🦇🦇🦇.75/5 Do you enjoy reading historical fiction? Read Maine Books!! This is the closest book I have ever found to my hometown and I’m DEAD!!! While reading this, I could literally see the places written about because it seems to take place in the town right next to me. I love it. Thank you so much to @celadonbooks for my gifted arc of GRANITE HARBOR by Peter Nichols out now ★★★★.5 Born and raised on Maine’s Midcoast, this book spoke to me in ways no other book set in Maine ever has. I could literally envision the scenes playing out, considering this is my home. For that reason alone, I immensely enjoyed this book. When you add the descriptive writing and the gruesome and eerie plot, it was a total recipe for success. A brutal murder of a teenage boy in a quiet coastal town has everyone on edge. Alex, Granite Harbor’s singular detective has his work cut out for him in regards to this case, especially considering his daughter, Sophie is one of the victim’s closest friends. Sophie and their other bestie, Ethan refuse to simply let the town forget about their friend. When another body is found brutalized in the same way as before, it looks like they have a serial killer on their hands... This is told in one of my favorite ways. We have the two protagonists we are following, Alex and Isabel (Ethan’s mother), and then we get the insights into the unknown killer. The point of view of the killer is always my favorite because you get the completely opposite dynamic between killer and victim than you do with anyone else. I absolutely loved this book. I wanted to really take my time with it, but I couldn’t help flying through it. 📖BOOK REVIEW📖 Title: His & Hers by Alice Feeney Rating: 4 Ahhh, it's so difficult to review this book without spoilers, but I really enjoyed it! The story takes a little while to get going but that's because Feeney spends time really fleshing out the characters we find out some things about them -past and present- which add to certain motives. However, after about a 1/3 the story really gets going and grips you in. We get three unreliable POVs: "his" - Adam, "hers" - Anna, and also the killer. I loved listening to this as an #audiobook because the killer's voice was distorted and it just added to the twisted nature of the story. All the characters in this story have dark secrets either from the past or presently which haunt them and the secrets to some extent are the drivers of the plot. The setting is a small quintessential british town surrounded by a wood which adds to that trapped feeling of are the characters going to survive and the descriptions of the setting at points are quite chilling which I loved. I would recommend this novel and hopefully will read more of Alice Feeney's work in the future. This was such a rip roaring rock n roll delight of a book, much like a gig of your favourite band this will leave you breathless and sweating and/or possibly doing finger guns shouting PEW PEW, my spidey senses tell me that this will definitely be picked up to be made into a movie, this book oomphed, is that a word? I am LOVING this series. I have a feeling that it’s going to get better with each book and I already can’t wait for more! Seeing Susan and her team again was like meeting up with friends. I was happy to be back in their world again, even if they had to deal with some terrible criminals. This time around, she winds up investigating a terrible serial killer who strangled a series of single mothers, and the group of Uber rich who are obsessed with the killer. When the members of this murder club start winding up strangled, it’s a race against time to find the person responsible. Things is Susan’s personal life are amplifying, too. 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Title: Local Woman Missing Rating: 3.25 Considering this book was on my TBR for so long, I feel irked that I don't love it. There's elements that I like but as the story progressed I just kept thinking "How long till the end?" and I feel it's put me into a bit of a reading slump (or atleast brung on the symptoms of one). The opening chapter of "Delilah" I loved and I thought I was going to be in for a hell of a read! However quickly the multiple perspectives became draining; there was no need for so many and I felt it slowed the story. Secondly, there were themes in this book that then didn't amount to anything such as infidelity and a Dr being investigated for misconduct which took up time in the novel unnecessarily and didn't link really. Lastly, the final twist that's meant to be the "happy" ending is unrealistic because surely after what happened you'd be traumatised - not pining after your aggressor! I am keen to read Mary Kubica's new release but I'm hoping it's better than this! 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Title: The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell Rating: 4.5 Another book by @spookypurcell that has been added to my favourites! I absolutely relished reading this book: the setting was so gothic, eerie, and creepy, and when the characters carried out the séances it literally made my skin crawl. What I love about the writing in this book is that it is so rich but not dense at all - you want to keep reading (and as an English teacher I just love the use of vocabulary to create such powerful imagery - absolutely dreamy!). I loved the characters Agnes and Pearl and really felt for them in their poverty and desperation to do right by the people they love. The Victorian setting of the book is also so well researched which is what makes it so believable and gripping. I ended up going down a rabbit hole trying to find out more about the silhouette portraits and phossy jaw, and for me when you go out of your way to find out more about the context of the setting I feel that just demonstrates how well it's written. Also the twists and reveals at the end of this I never would have guessed as the trail of crumbs and hints in the book are so well hidden - but then it all clicks. The only reason this isn't a 5 star is because I've read other novels by Purcell and I loved the ending of them more. DRC Review Thank you @BlackstonePublishing and @NetGalley for granting me early access to HOME IS WHERE THE BODIES ARE by Jeneva Rose out 4/30/24 This was my first Jeneva Rose read and I loved it. I’m eager to go through her backlist because I enjoy the clever writing. Were there things I saw coming? Yes, but it didn’t deter from the excitement of the pacing and the path taken to get there. You get a lot of estranged sibling dynamic, which I REALLY enjoyed. The death of their mother is what brings these three siblings back together, and upon going through her home, her will and her last words, we piece together a long since buried secret finally coming to the surface. Something happened years ago and some in town have never really recovered from it. Now, there is evidence of a link between this event from the past and their parents, leaving them at a loss for what to do. Could this be the reason behind their father leaving them years ago? Answers bring more questions in this twisty family drama/psychological thriller. This book had a lot of themes and tropes I enjoy in thrillers. 🚨DYSTOPIAN TBR🚨 One of my favourite genres is dystopia: I love (not literally of course) immersing into dysfunctional and oppressive worlds where something has been taken to the extreme. What draws me into dystopian fiction is when it's speculative - so set not too far into the future - because it highlights the dangers of our current systems and how they could quickly go wrong. I do get 'dystopia fatigue' though and can't read them back to back as they usually can be quite intense and I need a palate cleanser after. In terms of this tbr of dystopian novels there is no real order however I do want to read The Minders by @johnmarrs.author soon so I can be as ready as possible for The Family Experiment. Two for tuesday! ✌️ Two home invasion books I've read recently and recommend, although they're both in the same category these are extremely different in how they approach the trope, I think I find this sub genre of horror deeply unsettling as it's rooted in the entirely possible, I enjoyed both of these immensely, The Intruders was SO TWISTY a must read for fans of Frieda or Sager, some parts were slightly unbelievable but it was throughly enjoyable I had a hard time putting it down, I also didn't see the ending coming, my jaw was on the floor! A perfect blend of thriller and supernatural! Night Watching..listen..the gasp I gusped! I don’t know what kinds of research this author has done, but Cole was definitely caring of these identities! Ken has this diagnosis. It has derailed her promising career, but when the opportunity to become the caretaker of a historic house, it calls to something in Kenetria’s historical preservationist heart. She and the other identities within her have a second chance. There is something strange going on about how and why she got the position, and when someone from her past comes back into her life to stir things up, Ken and her alters need to protect themselves against accusations of murder. This is an incredibly bare bones summarization of this story. There is so much nuance and depth. There were times when I was confused, but the way this was written was really riveting. Lastly, I absolutely LOVED the other identities and the way the inner mind network is structured. 💚💚💚💚💚 I started this book with low expectations as I had never heard of Sarina Bowen before. I was blown away. This was the perfect thriller with a whodunnit plot like, unreliable characters, and a small romance feature. The ending was a little rushed, so I'd probably down it to a 4.5 star other than I was just simply blown away by how well the rest of the book kept me on the edge of my seat. Unofficial synopsis: after 5 years Ariel receives a text that suddenly changes everything. She begins to question, what really happened to her former lover, what was he uncovering, and who was behind the secretes of their tech company. 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Title: The Bandit Queens by @parinishroff Rating: 4.25 This is a dark and humourous novel that deals with the experiences of south asian women (in this case indian) within the realms of a patriarchal system. It's hard-hitting yet funny, heartbreaking yet heartwarming, depressing yet still hopeful as it highlights how the female experience is still one of resilience and determination in order to be successful even within such oppressive restraints. What I most loved about it was how it portrayed female friendships and bonds and how important they are to true womanhood - individually and collectively. The small group of women (who at times have their own conflicts) come together to try and better their livelihoods because the men they are with aren't able to provide for them as promised. As a south asian woman, I also loved the representation of a world that I can understand and relate too. On the surface it felt relatable because it mentions items such as sarees, mehendi roti and rice etc but also on a deeper level because the author used metaphors and euphemisms that are just unique to the domestic sphere of an asian woman. I also loved at the end what happens to one of the male characters - I felt his punishment was worse than death! I found myself so completely immersed in this story, which as soon as you think you have a handle on what’s actually happening, the rug is ripped from under you… in the best way. There was such a level of eerie-ness in The Intruders. This is so atmospheric, painting a very vivid picture of the pure desperation within these characters. We get a past and present timeline here, but it’s a strange combination of narration between multiple different people… and it WORKED so well. When a couple finds themselves as the house sitters (caretakers) for an abandoned home, in which they are able to stay there rent free in the capacity of caring for the house, Cass can immediately sense something strange about the place. With a sordid past, this house looms like its very own conscious presence. Why do Cass and James feel such a pull to the house? What secrets will this place reveal to them? 📖 Book Review 📖 Title: The Passengers by John Marrs Rating: 5 Form read in: 🎧 This book was absolutely harrowing and disturbing set in the near future where humans are no longer in charge of cars. What I love about @johnmarrs.author books is that he takes what is becoming everyday - and more than ever forced upon us - technology and magnifies the fears we have into a believable near future reality. I've read a few of his other novels and I always love the multiple character point of views, the cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, and the secrets of each character that are slowly revealed to us. In The Passengers I loved the protagonist Libby, as well as the representation of different ethnicities, and also the villains - yes - villains! I don't want to say too much but my favourite pair after Libby's love interest were the married couple and how they played each other off in a moment of crisis. The Minders is next on my list to read from John's backlist as I can't wait for The Family Experiment. 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Title: The Push by Ashley Audrain Rating: 2.75 I was so excited for this novel as it has been on my TBR forever however it didn't live up to the hype. I liked the idea of generational trauma presenting itself in the mother-child relationship as well as a potentially unhinged and creepy child, however there was no thrill at all. We all knew what Violet was going to do from the moment she had a sibling - there was no element of surprise there(!). Normally, I like plots that flit between the past and present however in this novel the story lines remained disconnected and the trope of generational trauma was just not well executed. Also, the chapters were not named as to which character or what year it was: the present being Blythe, then the past being Cecelia (Blythe's mother), and Etta (Blythe's grandmother) and I feel that would've made the novel clearer for me. What irritated me even further especially as an English teacher was the fact that when in Blythe's perspective almost all the sentences started with "I...": it just felt so repetitive and killed the pace. It also took me a third of the audiobook (chapter 29/30) to get fully into it, and I would've DNF'ed however considering it is such a hyped book I thought it'd get good at some point and there would be a huge turn but it remained predictable throughout. 🎧AUDIOBOOKS🎧 Whilst being an avid reader, the way I read most - particularly during term time - is through audiobooks. I've loved audiobooks since discovering them as they allow me to enjoy books during 'dead time' such as driving, doing the laundry, cooking etc and I find it just as immersive as reading. Obviously, I'd love to have the time to sit and read all the books however it just isn't feasible particularly after a busy day of teaching I just don't have the head space to absorb further information through the written form. ⛔No Exit by Taylor Adams⛔: a truly gripping thriller. This book has no points of relief: you are constantly teetering on the edge of imminent danger page after page. 👻 This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and boy, was it a doozy! Thank you @EpicReads and @StorygramTours for my gifted copy of UNDER THIS RED ROCK by Mindy McGinnis published 3/19 Plagued by the mental illness running in her family and the recent suicide of her older brother, Neely finds some respite from the ghosts that haunt her every day in the caverns. She takes a job as a tour guide in these historical caverns where the ghosts and/or hallucinations can’t reach her. There she reconnects with a friend of her brothers and also meets Mila, a girl who lights her world up. One night of trying to fit in with the rest of the staff (partaking in her first experience with drugs), and Neely’s state of mind is worse than ever before. In an even darker turn of events, Mila’s gone missing and Neely was the last person to see her. When she is found dead in the caverns, Mila has to figure out who is responsible… and come to terms with the possibility that SHE is responsible… I thought this was such a dark and twisty read. I've just read the first few chapters after receiving this today and YES this is gonna be so good, I agree with the blurb "The Secret History for millenials", the writing is so addictive I think I'm gonna struggle to put this one down, can't wait to get *into the meat of it* is that a correct saying? Book Review Thank you so much to @CrookedLaneBooks for gifting me a finished copy of THE HUNGRY DARK by Jen Williams out 4/9 Ashley is a scammer posing as a psychic, cheating people out of their money by using her “abilities” to commune with their dead loved ones. A secret she keeps to herself though, is her very real ability to see things that are otherworldly, like the Heedful Ones, who creep on the outskirts, and just plain old freaking her out. She has seen them since she was a child, but hadn’t for some time now in her adult life. Now, a grisly set of child murders have awoken not only her gifts, but the presence of the Heedful Ones. When she helps police find the body of a missing child as a publicity stunt, it catapults her into a terrifying situation. I found this to be really disturbing and interesting simultaneously. Child death is something I’m not too keen to read about, but this book kept me right on the edge, desperate to know what was really going on.
