📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Title: The Push by Ashley Audrain Rating: 2.75 I was so excited for this novel as it has been on my TBR forever however it didn't live up to the hype. I liked the idea of generational trauma presenting itself in the mother-child relationship as well as a potentially unhinged and creepy child, however there was no thrill at all. We all knew what Violet was going to do from the moment she had a sibling - there was no element of surprise there(!). Normally, I like plots that flit between the past and present however in this novel the story lines remained disconnected and the trope of generational trauma was just not well executed. Also, the chapters were not named as to which character or what year it was: the present being Blythe, then the past being Cecelia (Blythe's mother), and Etta (Blythe's grandmother) and I feel that would've made the novel clearer for me. What irritated me even further especially as an English teacher was the fact that when in Blythe's perspective almost all the sentences started with "I...": it just felt so repetitive and killed the pace. It also took me a third of the audiobook (chapter 29/30) to get fully into it, and I would've DNF'ed however considering it is such a hyped book I thought it'd get good at some point and there would be a huge turn but it remained predictable throughout. 🎧AUDIOBOOKS🎧 Whilst being an avid reader, the way I read most - particularly during term time - is through audiobooks. I've loved audiobooks since discovering them as they allow me to enjoy books during 'dead time' such as driving, doing the laundry, cooking etc and I find it just as immersive as reading. Obviously, I'd love to have the time to sit and read all the books however it just isn't feasible particularly after a busy day of teaching I just don't have the head space to absorb further information through the written form. We have an Olympic-level runner in a race that is 26 miles long, and the entire time she’s running, she is on her phone texting and talking with multiple people, taking screenshots and looking at pictures being sent to her. Who can do that when trying to beat their personal record and become one of the best known athletes in the world? I would say the ending was also a little weak, but I didn’t see it coming. Since then, I’ve read Local Woman Missing and loved 😍 but for this one, I honestly think I liked it more because I listened to it rather than reading it. Listening to it made it feel very suspenseful and I was just waiting for the bomb to drop lol I enjoyed the multiple POV’s and how we jumped right into what was going on. So this book was good but it wasn’t like an OMG I just died kind of book. One character annoyed me and I felt like some things were very repetitive. I just felt like it could have been more. Like I said though, the suspense was great imo and I wasn’t expecting the twist at all! It was intriguing and has a strong build up, but it was too predictable. Even the ending felt so anticlimactic. One of the things that put me off whenever I read thriller or mystery is when it has lot of loose ends or major plotholes, and this book has a lot of those, which I found hard to ignore. They say this is a modern retelling of Jane Eyre and I haven't read it yet, but I do have a feeling that I would've enjoyed it more. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Five-Star Friday✨ Notes On An Execution by Danya Kukafka ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Format: 🎧 Duration: 10h ❔ Have you read this one❔ I've never heard of this book or paid any attention to the couple reviews I've scrolled over but since it was the July pick for #ThrillaBookstaClub and open for me to borrow on @libby, I decided to give it a shot and I'm so freaking happy I did! Such an amazing novel! This author has a beautiful writing style, making you think deeper into this story and gives you the chance to form your own opinion on the topic at hand: the death penalty. Ansel is a serial killer awaiting his execution. He comes from a shitty background and has had nobody his whole life. So while he is waiting to die, we get his POV up until it's time and I loved that the author put him in this book! At first I was a little upset that his character wasn't more disturbing, but the more I sit here the more I understand the author was humanizing this character and making us see him as a person to form our own opinions and feel what that character was feeling in the moment. (I obviously have my own opinions in regards to this topic but I'll keep that to myself lol) Along with his pov, we also had POVs of women in his life who were affected by his actions. I loved them all tbh! We also go through the different timelines leading up to the present and even though you can expect what's coming, I still felt like I was on the edge of my seat! Overall, I 100% recommend this one! The writing was great, the characters were great. From biker gangs , corruption, a daughter craving the escape from her parents vice grip on her life to a misunderstood outcast who the whole town hates…except the daughter who longs to escape. Their escape and the events that shape it are twisting and winding, through the swamp, the drug houses , the church and the convertible taking them to freedom. Not gonna lie, I disliked Cora’s voice/personality to the point of almost giving this a 4.5 lol but she came in clutch towards the end and became a strong independent woman 😂 so I feel better. Idk about y’all, but I love a good domestic thriller. This one came at you with multiple POV’s of women in the neighborhood. This weekend I finished the second book in the Housemaid’s series. It was another book filled with tons of shocking twists. My recommendation is to actually let a little bit of time go by between books. You don’t need to remember many details about the first book to understand this book. My reason for this is because both books had such similar formats that it almost made it feel like I was reading the same book twice. Since it felt similar it didn’t make me want to read it as fast and it kind of took away from the shock factor. It’s still a quick read and is an exciting thriller. When those 10 days are up you become very fluent in said language. You cannot talk to The Centre with anyone and you are only allowed to recommend one person in your lifetime for the program. What could possibly go wrong? ✨I really, really wanted to love The Centre because of how unique and fascinating the plot is but it ultimately fell flat for me. ✨Ayesha does a great job of setting up the clinical feel of The Centre and allows us as the readers to feel suspicious of it as we read on. ✨But for me the plot felt very discombobulated with there being a lot threads of subplots that were sown into the book but were never fully explored and talked about again. I found a lot of the twists to be very predictable. Looking for a creepy domestic thriller that takes place in an isolated, abandoned chapel? Look no further!👀 Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5) Synopsis⬇️ ✨Every wedding anniversary, Mr and Mrs Wright exchange the traditional gifts, but Adam’s wife also writes him a letter she never lets him read. Until now. Adam and Amelia Wright win a weekend away to Scotland, staying in a recently renovated lodge. Amelia believes this weekend away is exactly what could make or break their marriage. But they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after✨ This one was a doozy! I really loved the “oh shit” moment when the plot all came together. The twist was truly one I didn’t see coming🫣 The characters were hard to root for, which I think played a large part in the creepy undertones of it all. I wasn’t sure who to trust throughout the entire story, even the ending! I love the disability rep, the creepy chapel, and the snowy setting. All these components blended together to give a truly intense domestic thriller. What I didn’t love about the book was the ending. Feeney left some very large questions unanswered that I feel like were detrimental to the plot. It just didn’t make sense that the ending was tied up in a pretty bow when literally (and legally), that wouldn’t be possible. 📚Read this if you loved The Wife Between Us and/or The Overnight Guest📚 ✨Things to look for✨ 1. The Only One Left 4.25 ⭐️ I’ve read a lot of Riley Sager’s recent books, and I have to say this one felt a little different! Normally his books feel squarely in the Thriller genre, but this one almost felt like an old Agatha Christie murder mystery. The Only One Left really centers around an old house on a cliff where some murders occurred many years ago. Kit is a health aid who is tasked with helping a stroke victim, but as she learns more about her, the story reveals slowly. I really enjoyed this mystery. If you love Riley Sager’s usual thrillers but not mysteries, this one might not be your favorite. But if you like old mysteries like I do, check it out!

It captures the true back n forth most women go through during everyday encounters with men. Something so normal can go so wrong so we are in a constant state of ‘well was that was creepy or am I overthinking it because he is a man.’ 🔪Speaking of men, I love that we had the killer’s POV wedge in between Lucy and Denise/Angela’s. It’s not your typical POV where he is actually committing the crimes, it was more of a ‘tell all’, which was unique and why I enjoyed it. 🌪️The twist on this one really went over my head and I did not see it coming. There were some parts that set off little thoughts or red flags but nothing that truly led me to the end. ⭐️I wouldn’t say this was an ‘omg, I’m obsessed’ page turner but I just kept reading and binged it in one day. It loses a star because the ending is very open ended and it honestly made me mad. YIKES BIKES!!! Its Freida McFadden!!!! If McFadden wrote a phonebook, I would read it. The depths of my love for this author are immeasurable and this book right here is everything my little heart could have desired and so much more. In true McFadden fashion, you'll never figure out this twisted tale and when it smacks you right up in the face, you'll never know what hit you. If you know anything about McFadden books you know not to spoil it for the next reader. So, I will leave you with this. 📚𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨: Don't Look For Me by @wendywalkerauthor ᴛʜᴇ sᴛᴏʀʏ: A grieving mother who's life has fallen apart, suddenly disappears without a trace in the middle of a storm. ᴍʏ ᴛᴡᴏ ᴄᴇɴᴛs: I cannot believe it took me so long to read this book! I originally received this ARC in July 2020 via @netgalley, but life got crazy (as it did for many of us during the pandemic) and I forgot about it until #thrillabookstaclub picked it as our monthly read earlier this year. This was the perfect excuse to finally read this, and my initial reaction is: WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG!? I absolutely loved it. It was the perfect balance of twists and intrigue, where the signs are all there and I felt like I was figuring out what happened, but still didn’t actually have a clue. I was floored by the ending (which scores major points in my book)! I previously read All Is Not Forgotten, and really enjoyed it. So far, she is 2 for 2 in my book and I've already fallen behind on the latest release of What Remains, but I'm determined to not wait another year before getting to it! You're Not Supposed To Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is a fast paced, nail biter of a Young Adult Thriller. Charity is working her dream job as the “Final Girl” at Camp Mirror Lake where campers come and PAY to be scared in a full contact terror game. During the last weekend of the season a few of her coworkers stop showing up but Charity is determined to finish the season with a bang even with her skeleton crew. However, Charity keeps seeing things late at night when all is supposed to be quiet and then someone ends up dead. Now, what was supposed to be a game turns into a real life horror movie. This was such a fun and exciting read. I was literally at the edge of my seat trying to put the pieces together. I loved that this book kept me in suspense and was not all the way predictable like some thrillers can be. There were times where I was questioning each characters motives and even screaming at them not to do certain things. Like, girl, do not go into that forest! How far is too far when spying on your neighbors?   I loved this book. This was amazing. I loved the messy people, the secret lives, the lies, the deceit, all of it. Everyone in this neighborhood is bonkers and it was such a trip. I love domestic thrillers that have multiple POV’s, because I live for the internal dialogue and how each person is thinking at the same time things are occurring. This did not disappoint at all. This addictive read had some of the best character development and growth that I have read in a thriller that had me thinking ‘wow I’m so proud of her!’ I highly recommend this one!
