Review Wild America 1997 DVD Rating: 3.5/5 Wild America is an entertaining adventure story that centres on the family dynamic and exploration of the natural world. This is one of the most Walt Disney films not produced by Walt Disney. Filmmaker William Dear has built his career on family stories that often include outlandish concepts. This is a more grounded story compared to the others and Dear provides an old school sentimentality, similar to a Joe Johnson film. Dear uses the story to focus on the bond of the three brothers as they navigate the obstacles of grown up and their quiet existence. The film wasn’t a hit when it released and it was another film that failed to capture Jonathan Taylor Thomas‘s fame. It’s not a classic by any means but it’s a whimsical story that has the building blocks of a family film. It’s not exactly a whole family story as the no-nonsense father is more concerned about the day to day life and can’t embrace what his children’s interests are. It’s a film I can connect with like many others who grew up with older generation sensibilities and I still enjoy watching this. It’s a harmless and an underrated Dear film, much like If Looks Could Kill. The Grudge - Exklusiv Limited Steelbook - Blu-ray 🇺🇸 While the old Grudge films, through their consistently atmospheric Japano horror, gave me many a nightmare, this film only makes me smile tiredly. The film didn’t really manage to build up tension for me, which is also due to the other narrative style, which with its many retrospectives/parallel stories is more reminiscent of a Trentino film and repeatedly pulls you out of current events. As far as horror style is concerned, this film unfortunately also distances itself from its predecessors and mainly relies on disgusting bloody images instead of horror, which even extends to the design of the curse itself. 🇩🇪 Während mir die alten Grudge Filme, durch ihren durchgängig atmospährischen Japano Horror, so manchen Alptraum bescherten, lässt mich dieser Film nur müde lächeln. Review Hangover Part II 2011 Blu-ray Rating: 3/5 Hangover Part II is a retread of the first film with a wildly uneven tone and harsher humour. My appreciation for this film has grown since my first viewing and while it’s funny, it’s nowhere near the heights of its predecessor. Todd Phillips dials into the setting of Bangkok and there’s certainly growth in his style between this and his previous film Due Date. The film falls into the similar sequel troupes of bigger and increasing support characters roles. The comedy feels more forced this time around and instead of unpredictability of the original, there’s a choice to linger on longer arcs. The film was a bigger hit at the box office and the momentum from the original’s success carried this to a wider audience. The progression of Stu’s character is lacking and it feels like he lost all the edginess from those closing scenes of original. This is still an enjoyable entry into the series and I liked that Phillips attempted a change of pace, even though the screenplay lacked originality. The craziness of the first is still here and the cast still share the same chemistry that works so well. The mean spirited comedy wasn’t as harsh in the original and there’s a leap made by Phillips that doesn’t work. The subplot involving Paul Giamatti‘s character pushes the film towards a similar conclusion of the first and this is another weak aspect of this story. Let me start star wars week early with some history this was my first movie on DVD. We'd just moved from Austin TX to upstate NY 2 days before my 13th birthday so I knew absolutely no one my folks felt bad and wanted to do something to make me feel a bit better about the circumstances so we went to circuit city and got me a 32 inch TV a DVD player and Episode 1 on DVD. I spent days going thru the 2nd disc the documentary (that has still never been put on another release to my knowledge) made me fall in love with making movies and want to do it so without this DVD this page and a large part of my life wouldn't exist. Review Damage 2009 DVD Rating: 2.5/5 Damage can’t overcome its simplicity, but as a starring vehicle for Steve Austin it’s surprisingly heartfelt considering the storyline. The film was a VOD title and I give it additional points for casting one of my favourite character actors Walton Goggins as a slimy underground fight agent. Austin provides a strong presence here and had his career been in the 80s he would’ve immediately been the new tough guy. Filmmaker Jeff F. King has been primarily involved in tv but his previous films are both Steven Seagal VOD releases. King doesn’t have the budgets with these films as the money is consumed by its central star and stunts, but it’s a step in the right direction for his career as a director. The screenplay is the central fault here and it can’t balance the softer story elements to create any true compassion for its characters. Laura Vandervoort and Goggins both assist the film with their supporting performances, and this triangle of characters allow this to be watchable between the fight sequences. It’s a flawed film without a central antagonist to really make this memorable, but as a VOD with limited exposure, it’s a bit of fun. Dragged down by some clunky dialogue and story structure, this film somehow shakes these flaws away for some gritty action beats.
