Don’t get me wrong, I love me some self care activities. When needing a little R&R, nothing beats a getting a massage, pedicure, or blowout, having coffee with a friend, or reading a book while taking a bath. And I define them as such because it either fills my emotional cup, allows me to temporarily disconnect if feeling overextended, or gives me a bit of a confidence boost. Which is fine. But where it gets messy is when behaviors that are more self sabotage in disguise are labeled as self care and thereby justified. Overeating foods that leave you feeling awful after. Drinking alcohol after a long, hard day. Spending all day lazing on the couch. Buying things you don’t need. Binging TV shows. So how do you distinguish what's what? If you feel regret or a sense of shame afterwards, that’s a strong cue it’s not serving you. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying there isn’t a time for the occasional indulgence. Especially if it’s intentional and aligned with your values. But if it’s starting to become a regular pattern that’s being used to numb or distract from uncomfortable emotions that are too hard to feel and you are experiencing negative consequences after, that’s when you know there’s a deeper issue that needs to be addressed. And if you have health or body composition goals you’re working to achieve, those misaligned behaviors will make it difficult if not impossible to do so. It’s time to reframe what true self care is. Sure it can be the surface level stuff, but more so it's: Instead, it’s fueling your body with nourishing food, staying hydrated, moving your body, prioritizing sleep, getting regular health checks, setting and upholding boundaries, spending time with people who lift you up but also hold you to a high standard, having a spiritual practice, expressing emotions in a healthy way (therapy, journaling), creative outlets, taking intentional downtime through methods that restore you. It's not always easy or enjoyable in the moment but is worth it in the end when you feel a true sense of peace and pride. That's what will allow you to be the best version of yourself and is what you're truly deserving of.

So, let's be blunt here: I'm behind. *Way* behind — as far as this tracker is concerned, anyway. Because I haven't ONLY been writing WinterMonstersWIP! I've been prepping a DnD campaign (not a session; the WHOLE campaign), dipping my toes in fun fanfiction to experiment with genre and form, and writing a lot of side projects ASIDE from those as well. Arms! This is my current heavy load arms routine. One day is heavy and 3 sets of 6-8 then another session is high-volume supersetting pump work. Have only been doing this for a couple weeks and have not done heavy loads for quite some time. Having a mix feels nice because I do like lifting heavier weights but the pump from high volume just feels so good too. Self sabotage is the silent killer of your goals.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I say silent because it can be so sneaky you don’t even realize it’s happening.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s not like you wake up one morning and say, “I’m gonna do whatever I can to F this up!”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Instead, you unconsciously find ways to act that isn't in alignment with your desired outcome. ⁣⁣ And it can happen for many reasons. Your past experiences, rejections, failures, or a negative comment you received even years ago can impact the way you see yourself. ⁣⁣ The beliefs of others, like family members or caretakers, that were imprinted on you from a young age. And because your brain was like a sponge, you soaked it all up and still take it as your truth to this day. ⁣⁣ It doesn’t matter how it happened, but it does mean you’ve created a story for yourself about your potential And what's possible. And now there's a constant narrative running in your mind telling you the reasons you'll never be able to accomplish your goal. ⁣⁣ Another reason for self sabotage happens is because your brain craves certainty and familiarity. It will do whatever it can to keep you safe from failure, rejection, or even success.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Because even if your current way of being is causing you pain, that feels less threatening than what's on the other side of changing. Breaking free always starts with awareness. Take some time to write down everything that comes up for you. Whose voice is still in your head? ⁣⁣ What do you need to let go of? Which stories need to be re-written? ⁣⁣ What are you continuing to do even if you know it's keeping you stuck?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But be compassionate with yourself. Undoing years of conditioning isn't easy and won't happen overnight. When you catch yourself self engaging in those patterns, notice and name it. Tell yourself you're safe, and then take the next right action. The more you can keep the promises you make to yourself, no matter how small at first, the more self trust you'll build. That shows your brain you're capable of change and it will be easier to keep going and create your new identity.

I've been identifying as a psychologist for the past 15 years. Although I’ve “only” been licensed since 2018, in my mind I was “going to be” and “learning to be” a psychologist since I was 20. Until one day I finally was. Understandably, it’s a huge part of my identity. I often think of myself as a psychologist before I think of myself as a woman, a daughter, a wife, a friend. Because it’s who I am day in and day out. It’s what I actively practice doing most. I earned it. But what I’m starting to realize is that although it was a huge accomplishment to adopt this title (which I definitely don’t take lightly), sometimes it makes it too easy to be complacent. I’ve gotten comfortable being a psychologist. It’s familiar. It’s known. It makes me useful. And because it is so familiar, it makes it difficult for me to do things outside of being a psychologist. It’s hard for me to think of myself as anything or anyone else. “Coach” feels weird. As does “teacher,” “writer,” or “speaker.” So in this way, what I’ve considered to be my biggest asset and strength, a skill I’ve cultivated for over a decade… has actually been holding me back. Holding me back from speaking to other aspects of my identity. Holding me back from trying new things. Holding me back from being someone new. Not that I have to take on a new identity, because that would be inauthentic… But actually allowing myself to be the me that I am today rather than the me I thought I’d be 15 years ago. So I welcome a new era for myself. One where I allow myself to be, try, and figure out new ways of showing up in the world. Ways that are uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and unknown. I’m going to do things and say things that feel weird, awkward, and scary. And I’m definitely not going to be 100% skilled at it. I encourage you to do the same. Feel gratitude for your biggest strength. Feel proud of the identity you’ve cultivated. And then go do something you might be bad at. Something fun. Something brave. Something that will feel not-you until you do it enough times and you realize it’s just another part of who you are ❤️

Diet culture is lying to you 👇🏻 You don’t have to eat “perfectly” to be healthy. Your workouts don’t have to go perfectly either. You can still get fit with interrupted workouts, cut short workouts and workouts that don’t feel like you crushed it but went kinda meh like. God created health. The formula to achieve it came from Him. 💪🏻 Reflecting on His grace based character, we can know He wouldn’t allow only perfect people (no such thing) to enjoy health and fitness. Or reserve it only for those who took things to extremes and made food and fitness an idol. 👎🏻 I’m still healthy even without perfection and extremes and so are many others. The girls were allowed to choose a couple of exercises today in PBT- the Butterflies is always requested, such a good exercise to strengthen the girls backs and core, and a little turnout work too. We also did the allegro exercise where you see the girls doing inverted Demi plies before catching the ball ( their favourite part). Don’t confuse training with testing. Not every day is going to be a record setting PR. But everyday is an opportunity. It’s perfectly fine to work with a lighter weight when you didn’t get enough sleep or the stress of the work week is taking it’s toll on your body. Your body doesn’t know how many plates are on the bar. What hard feels like changes day to day. And HARD training is all it needs.

Day 17 of the #20for20artchallengeapril2024 This is done for right now. There’s some corrections I can make if I feel like it, but I’m going to wait it out to see what I think in a few days or so. This was such a sweet memory from our past trip to Florida this year. We were able to go to the #bippityboppityboutique and get treated like a princess. My daughter clearly chose Belle as her costume - and she walked around all day with her head held high. She’s our middle child and she sometimes gets lost in the shuffle with having a toddler and also a special needs older sibling. We try and do whatever we can to have her feel special and loved, because she deserves that and more. Triumphs: I returned and perhaps completed the painting. I was able to push past barriers to keep working on it until it got to a place where I felt good about it. Considerations: Some of the perspective is off around my daughter - I also considered doing no “real” background and just encompassing her in color. Recently I’ve had a lot of moments where I’ve felt like I’ve really let things slip*, been really avoidant with the things I want movement on, and felt like a failure as a result of things not going the way I planned. I’m grateful to have a practice that reminds me of right here and now. In yoga practice and in life we encounter the constant dance of impermanence. We understand change is inevitable, yet often find ourselves clinging to the illusion of total control as if we can dictate every single outcome in our favour. It’s in the human condition to want to hold onto happiness (wouldn’t that be nice?), but understanding and embracing the rise and fall of things is a more truthful angle, knowing that neither state is permanent. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying take a path of nihilism and apathy, I am as optimistic about things as you can get, but life doesn’t always go my way (a real shame!) We can take a moment to stand back and see things as they are; there are many forces at play beyond our own control. A lot of effort can feel like it’s going nowhere — but every step in the right direction, no matter how small, is progress. And while we may not always see the immediate results of our actions, and not always in the exact way we hope, every effort counts. Focus on the things you do have control over in the moment and go from there. That’s yoga in action. Progress is rarely straightforward. In what ways do you respond to and navigate the bumps? The key to being g successful with fat loss is being able to manage your expectations. Understand that you didn't get to this place overnight, so it will take time and require a whole lot of patience. If you want to stick with it for long enough to reach your goal, you'll have to accept there will be many ups and downs along the way. And that’s normal! Here are some of the “downs” you might experience along the way. But if you can learn to normalize, accept, and embrace these parts of your journey and ride both the highs and lows, the process will be more enjoyable and you’ll be able to to finally follow through on your commitment instead of throwing in the towel the minute it looks like it's not working. That’s pretty much a wrap on training for the Manchester Marathon! I’m feeling at the moment like I don’t have excuses for not executing my plan on Sunday - which is a great position to be in! Luckily the building blocks have gone pretty well for this race. I’ve tried to follow some simple rules: • Each week aimed for at least a long run with some marathon pace, a longer tempo session and an interval run. It’s easy to get carried away with the mileage in some plans (and that others do on social media) but everyone and their bodies are different. Knowing mine has been key to getting to the start line fit and healthy. • Been lucky to not have any significant injuries, illness or problems. When I have had niggles I’ve tried to see the bigger picture and drop sessions rather than push on through. • Prioritised sleep and recovery including regular maintenance massages with @rocksportsmassagetherapy I’ve been pretty consistent with bedtimes and averaged over 8.5 hours of sleep per night this year. • Made sure the other activities I do have complemented the running, for example no super hard bikes before key run sessions but lots of easy shakeout spins. • Only one pasty since New Year!!! Seriously though, prioritised fuelling key sessions with good food rather than minimising what I put in. I don’t often share training data as it’s only relevant to me but since we are at the end of 4 months of focus it’s a nice time to look back. Just about 500 running miles this year, an average weekly TSS of 540, 60% of my time has been spent in Zone 1 or 2. I’ve also realised that I have a sweetspot around 40 miles per week, much above that and the frequency of niggles increases!!! I’m not the fittest or fastest I’ve ever been but I’m raring to go in the weekend. Focused on lower body last night, did some abs and glutes! Trying to mix it up with my nutrition, going to focus on getting more protein and trying to lower carbs a bit to see if that helps my progress 💓 Otherwise I’m still working on my 100 miles in April challenge, I hurt my foot last week so I’m behind on my miles, but I’m currently at 20 miles which leaves me 80 miles 🥲 But 4 miles/day is pretty do-able so I’m going to do my best! But like so many leaders, he knew he could be more effective. He’d spend hours pouring over the details. We are by no means finished here but I wanted to explain how you can make some confidence boosting changes in a short space of 9 weeks. When my client came to me, she wasn’t in a great place, she had gone through a divorce 2 years prior, hitting peri-menopause and having thyroid issues. She didn’t have a fantastic relationship with food and had previously made some extreme choices (as most of us have, at some point) in regards to diet and exercise, all in the name of looking good. She was also struggling to lose weight, nothing was working anymore, she had lost sight of who she was and had hit a brick wall. She had no way out, or so she thought… In the last 9 weeks: - 4.4kg down in weight 📉 - Been consistent with her training and nutrition (NOT PERFECT) 👌🏼 - Awareness of habitual eating/drinking cycles 🔁 - Allowing herself to eat things she enjoys and not just things she knows are good for her 🍰 - Tracking all her own food, with daily protein goal 🍲 - Had nights out with the girls drinking alcohol 🍸 - A little Ibiza holiday 💃🏼 If this sounds like you, don’t accept it, you don’t have to! So many of my coaching clients struggle with feeling good about the healthy direction they’re headed in because they haven’t yet arrived at their final destination. It’s hard for them to celebrate their wins along the way because they stay so focused on the fact that they are not yet exactly where they want to be. It’s hard for them the focus on the progress they are making verses wanting everything to be just perfect right now, please and thank you. Can you relate? 🙋🏻‍♀️ It took them quite some time to get stuck in the rut they are in, but they instantly want to be pulled out of it.... because we all want everything instantly, right? That’s what we expect from every single thing in life... But lasting change typically isn’t instant. Sometimes the big picture is so big, we don’t know what steps to take to get us there. The goal can seem overwhelming; we may feel we don’t have the time or the resources or we don’t see what steps we can take to get ourselves there. ✨ We don’t know where to start so we make excuses. ✨ Or the goal isn’t really ours, it’s something we feel like we should do. It’s not our “why”. ✨ Or we don’t start because we think we’ll fail. Oftentimes, this is because we set unrealistic expectations and believe that if we’re not perfect in our pursuit, we’re a failure. But we’re human. We’re imperfect. It’s what makes us each unique... and AMAZING! 🥰 Perfection should never be the goal because the outcome will always be failure. Progress = making gradual steps forward; moving ahead in a process, change, or development. Perfection = the most favorable condition or highest level. It means: without flaws or defects; faultless; complete; pure. To strive for progress, not perfection, means that you should appreciate and be proud of your work.
