Sebastian has autism and came to us at the start of his search for long term employment. Not knowing anything about resumes or interviewing, he relied on his employU employment specialists Kellie and Pharaoh to teach him. Together, they created a resume for Sebastian and practiced interview skills. From there he was able to find and complete a paid on the job training at Walgreens. After Walgreens, Sebastian was able to find a position at Arby's taking orders and keeping the dining area clean. With the help of Kellie and Pharaoh, he learned how to balance all of his responsibilities. Now that he has found long term employment Sebastian wants to set his sights higher. He wants to look for an even better job with higher pay using the resume and interview skills he now has. Gaining skills to further employment dreams is our goal for all our clients. When people are expecting me to speak and I can't, it's really stressful and frustrating. It's very helpful when they are patient with me and are open to communicating in another way, like writing. Not everyone is, especially when they think that I SHOULD be speaking. Even people who are capable of speech sometimes, or even most of the time, sometimes rely on other forms of communication at other times. If someone is having a verbal shutdown, trust that they are doing their best and accommodate them in a way that is supportive. There is obviously a lot more to autism than just these things. An autistic person might experience them differently or not at all. People who say that "everyone does that" or that "everyone is a little bit autistic" are only seeing things at the surface level and not for the deep, nuanced, and varied experience that autism is. It is a distinct neurotype for a reason, because not everybody experiences the world like autistic people do. Some autistic differences are amazing and some are difficult. An aspect of communication that I struggle with is knowing when a conversation is over. I either keep talking until the other person ends the conversation for me, or I just hang around in awkward silence until I can't take it anymore and then slowly slink away. Sometimes I even do a really fun combination of the two where I say weird things while I awkwardly back away, leaving the other person thoroughly confused as to how I was released into society with the social skills of a potato 🥔 But that's who I am. Sometimes it's really hard to give myself credit for accomplishing something because it doesn't feel worthy of credit. It feels like something I "should" be able to do with ease, and it seems like other people don't struggle with it at all. But part of acknowledging what you struggle with or need help with is also acknowledging the effort you put in to face your struggles and when things go okay. I did something today that past me wouldn't have been able to. My old art I did at school years ago and I got a D for my GCSEs. I'm thinking of doing art again from the beginning. First is me as a vampire. I did this at school for my exams years ago. I used pastels. Not really great and seems flat on some points. Doesn't stand out but one of my favorites I did The second is one of my best drawings from that time. Looking back on it god awful lol. It's always hard for me to tell if I like something new because the fact that it's new and different makes me so unsure, and sometimes flat out dislike something until I get used to it. New glasses, haircuts, new styles or colors of clothes, new experiences and new places, and even new people. So I got new glasses but I don't know if I like them or not yet. They are a different size, a different color, and just feel different. I see better with them than with my old glasses so I'm happy about that. Something seeing different, even if it's seeing better, can also take time to get used to. I have a hard time wearing sunglasses for this reason, even though I'm really sensitive to light. Oliver is nearing the end of his high school journey and has been exploring different career industries with us in hopes of finding the right fit for him. With the help of his employU employment specialist, Sue, Oliver has completed several paid internships with the goal of building skills to get a position at Publix. His first internship was at Habijax Restore where he learned to work efficiently, take initiative, and build relationships with both managers and coworkers. After that, he completed two internships at Basca Bargain Boutique. Here, he worked on his communication and collaboration skills. Autism gives Oliver the ability to pay attention to detail and do the best he can at everything but it does make it difficult for him to communicate with superiors and people he doesn't know well. In order to help, Sue coached, modeled, and encouraged the correct behaviors and because of Oliver's strong work ethic and motivation to push past it he succeeded! Oliver is now completing another internship with Walgreens where he is learning retail merchandising and working on his independence and strengthening those communication skills. He is doing a great job gaining skills in preparation for applying to Publix where he would like to work through college. We admire Oliver's perseverance and determination to gain as much work experience in college to prepare him for the future. To me, this is like asking someone who just got glasses why they need them when they've gone their whole life without them. There is a difference between not needing something and not knowing that it's available. When you find something that improves your quality of life, why wouldn't you take advantage of it? My biggest motivation to stay self harm free is my nephews. They already notice my scars and someday they will want to know how I got them. Right now I can tell them they are just "boo-boos" and they are satisfied with that answer, but someday they will want to know more.
