She enters the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition with the plan to win so that her dad sees her accomplishment in the paper. The only problem is she’s up against Louisiana Elefante, whose parents were stars in show business, and Beverly Tapinski, whose own motive is to sabotage the competition. On the surface, the 3 girls don’t have much in common, but through baton-twirling lessons and conversation, the girls are bonded in experiences that have taught them about grief and loss at a young age. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 I don’t have many readers in my population of students; however, this is a book that more than one 8th grade student has recommended for me to read over the years, so I finally picked it up! I have of course read Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, so I knew this would be good. She has such a gift for storytelling, which I was able to experience firsthand at the Anderson’s Bookshop Children’s Literature Breakfast when she was a featured keynote speaker. In so few words and pages, Kate DiCamillo created an unlikely friendship between 3 very different girls and established an inseparable bond between them that made sense. It was funny and heartbreaking, and I was sad for how much the girls had gone through in their young lives. They still had so much innocence to them, and I admired the resilience they had and the love that they had to give to each other and the people in their communities. Raymie Nightingale - 4/5 ⭐️ Last weekend I went to a library book sale and I picked this hard cover for only 2 euros. The book is about Raymie, a 10-year-old girl who wanted to win a beauty pageant with the hope that her dad, who ran away with a dental hygenist, would see her photos on the newspaper and come back. In order to win, she took a baton twirling class. Here, she met Beverly and Louisiana, and they embarked on an adventure of doing good deeds and friendship. Reading this book is like experiencing a hug and a happy smile while being sad. It is so sad, because the book discussing loss, death, and family issues experiencing through the eyes of children. But it is also about friendship, and belief, and having a positive attitude in life. It's nothing like I have read before. Had I seen "Raymie Nightingale" in the library, I would have probably not given it a single thought, but it's such a special book. It makes me think about how many great books out there I have missed just because. Then again, I guess in some sense books are like people, you never know until you sit down and get to know them. Three young girls have a plan involving the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition. Two want to win it (for their own individual reasons) and the other wants to sabotage it. On the surface, what brings them together is learning how to baton twirl. What keeps them together is their desire to do a good deed. This certainly isn't my favorite DiCamillo novel. I felt it lacking and a little choppy, but I did like some of the themes and found myself audibly laughing at one of the character's remarks. What book did you start July off with? Did you like it?
“It was the strangest things, how happiness came out of nowhere and inflated your soul.” I’m not sure there is any author of fiction who so inflates my soul like Kate DiCamillo. The characters she creates and shares are us, with all the joys and troubles of real life, and she does so in a way that ignites hope. I have been wanting to reread these “three rancheros” books since the start of the year, but wanted to wait until summer, which is more in line with the setting of two of the three novels. Thus my first three books finished here in early July were these three gems. I always recommend experiencing Raymie via audiobook, as the narration is incredible, yet reading them in print is no less of a pleasure. The stories of the friendship of Raymie and Louisiana and Beverly and how their lives change over the course of these three books is so emotionally satisfying, and having the novels set in the 1970’s makes them extra special to me as I was just a bit younger than these characters when their adventures occur and I can relate so well to the world in that time period. In an author’s note Kate writes: “When we read together, we connect. Together, we see the world. Together, we see one another”, and her books foster that bond of connection and togetherness. Aiyanna struggled reading when she first came to live with us. Mrs.Maini encouraged her to read The Tale of Despereaux. She finished it and was so proud of herself. She then took an AR test and bombed. We trouble-shot and she tried another #KateDiCamillo book and she found characters she liked and people she related to. Today, I thought the highlight of my day would be Judy Blume, but it was this woman who took the time to write a little note to Aiyanna. Thank you Kate DiCamillo for writing characters that we need. I picked up Beverly, Right Here at my schools book fair and then in typical fashion, held onto it for months before devouring it within two days. When I realized it was a trilogy, I quickly ordered the other two. I’ve been reading more YA and Middle grade books to add to my classroom shelves for my high readers and these will be ones I will definitely recommend to them! 📚 I ADORED this trilogy. The #ThreeRancheros trilogy, made up of #RaymieNightingale, #LouisianasWayHome and #BeverlyRightHere, tell stories of three girls who are unlikely friends but desperately need each other in these times of their lives. 🐇 The girls are written so well I just want to give them all hugs and ask if they want something to eat. You just want to take care of them but meanwhile they take care of themselves just fine. 🥪 I can’t wait to recommend these to my students from last year and my new class! And if you read them, my emoji choices make more sense. 😉

Raymie - Nữ hiệp mộng mơ - Kate DiCamillo “Raymie - Nữ hiệp mộng mơ” vẫn mang phong cách các tác phẩm của Kate DiCamillo: nhân vật bất hạnh, nhưng câu chuyện thì lại tràn đầy ánh sáng, tình yêu và hi vọng. Các nhân vật mang trong tim mình những vết thương, nhưng rồi họ tìm được nhau, và trái tim họ dần được chữa lành. Câu chuyện có những đoạn khá kỳ, khiến mình nhớ đến “Những cuộc phiêu lưu sáng chói của Flora & Ulysses”. Nhưng đây không phải một kiểu kỳ tiêu cực, và càng đọc dần về sau thì mình càng cảm thấy tốt hơn, đến đoạn cuối thì mình thấy ấm lòng. Cũng giống “Chuyện Despereaux”, nhiều triết lí đã được đan cài xuyên suốt “Raymie - Nữ hiệp mộng mơ”. Mình thích cái cách Kate DiCamillo cho thấy con người vẫn luôn có thể tìm được niềm vui và hi vọng sau nỗi buồn, và điều này được thể hiện qua những chi tiết về ánh sáng trong câu chuyện. Những cô bé trong tác phẩm này cũng rất đáng yêu, mỗi người một vẻ nhưng đều biết quan tâm và cảm thông với người khác. Tác phẩm đầu tiên mà mình đọc của Kate DiCamillo là “Bởi vì Winn-Dixie”, và đây mãi mãi là một trong những cuốn sách mình thích nhất trên đời. Vậy nên mình cũng đã kì vọng khá nhiều vào “Raymie - Nữ hiệp mộng mơ”, đặc biệt là sau khi đọc những lời khen ngợi được in trên bìa sách. Thú thật thì mình không phát cuồng về cuốn này như với “Bởi vì Winn-Dixie”, nhưng câu chuyện rõ ràng là có mang vẻ đẹp của nó, một vẻ đẹp dịu dàng và tươi sáng đặc trưng trong các tác phẩm của Kate DiCamillo. Tóm lại thì, “Raymie - Nữ hiệp mộng mơ” không phải một cuốn sách xuất sắc như mình kì vọng, nhưng cũng đã “thổi phồng” hồn mình. Es una historia súper tierna y emotiva y acá les cuento de que se trata.👇🏼 Raymie es una niña de 10 años que ha ideado un plan para que su padre (quien se fugó hace un par de días con la asistente del dentista) regrese a su hogar. Ella está convencida que si logra ganar un concurso de talentos y salir en el periódico, hará que su padre regrese y todo sea como antes. Para ganar el concurso se inscribe a unas clases de malabarismo con bastón y allí conocerá a dos niñas muy especiales: Beverly y Louisiana. Con ellas vivirá aventuras que la harán crecer y madurar y sobretodo entender el significado de la palabra amistad. Es un libro que se lee en un suspiro. Yo me lo leí de un día para otro y les aseguro que es una lectura muy sencilla, fresca y que es totalmente ideal para desconectar de alguna lectura mas pesada. Los personajes son adorables, es muy fácil conectar con esas tres niñas que tienen detrás historias tan fuertes. La pérdida es algo que está muy presente y veremos cómo cada una lo vive de una manera diferente… Si bien es un middle grade les aseguro que cualquier adulto puede disfrutarlo incluso más que un niño ya qué hay un trasfondo con mucha carga emocional y se habla de cuestiones familiares y sentimentales que los niños podrían no entender. Sin dudas volvería a leer a Kate DiCamillo ya que quedé enamorada de su pluma y de la manera que te hace conectar con sus personajes. February reads 📚 I honestly picked this used book based solely on the cover art. It wasn't until I opened the first page that I realized #RaymieNightingale is a book for young adults! I did go on to finish it because it was a sweet story which took me back to the summer days of my girlhood - when things were different and worries were few. 𝐑𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐢𝐞, 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲- the Three Rancheros. I originally picked up Raymie Nightingale on @definitelyra recomendation and quickly found myself listening to the entire middlegrade coming-of-age series back-to-back. Each girl is dealing with less-than-stellar or unconventional parents and their friendship offers support and warmth. Their stories made my heart hurt a bit but it also made my heart soar at each character's tenacity and empathy. Set in the mid to late 70's, their adventures and issues felt realistic and relatable. If there was a contest for best character name I would put Louisiana Elefante in the running. AUDIO- Highly recommend. All three narrators were outstanding.

Book 33 of 2022. Wow! Raymie Nightingale blew me away! After I read it on my own, I immediately read the whole thing again, aloud, to my husband (who also loved it). With gorgeous writing, and quirky, resilient characters, it manages to be complex, haunting, uplifting, and laugh out loud funny all at once. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that so brilliantly captures childhood in the 1970’s. It made me wonder what kids today would even make of it. It’s trick-or-READ at our house. This year we gave away 50 (fifty!) books and demolished a bag of 250 mini chocolate bars! 😱 That’s a win for reading (and candy bar manufacturers). 😉 . Backstory: one Halloween a few years back, shortly after setting up our @littlefreelibrary, I decided to give out some books our family had outgrown as a way to encourage neighbors to visit and exchange books. Well, the neighborhood kids LOVED it. So I started collecting children’s books and did it again the next year. . Each year the setup has gotten a little more elaborate. And each year I love hearing children scream, “The book house!” and excitedly showing off their book finds to friends and family. We had a tie for most enthusiastic this year between Link from Legend of Zelda, who was absolutely ecstatic to get a copy of Odder, and the young rider of an inflatable t-rex, who told everyone who would listen about their copy of Raymie Nightingale. . I’ve also made an effort through the years to include books with a diversity of characters and authors (including many great recommendations I’ve found/purchased through @sistahscifi ). . And in the weeks leading up to Halloween, I read and enjoyed many of the books I gave out. (Specifics to come in future Insta posts.) . I LOVE a good children’s book with strong female characters. While this book is a Children’s book, some very deep and traumatic topics are the basis of the story. Every child should be able to see themselves in books, and Kate does that so well in this series of books! Check out Raymie Nightengale, Louisiana’s Way Home, and Beverly Right Here! If you’ve never read any of Kate Dicamillo’s books, I highly suggest you RUN and get one! This loose trilogy of novels by the wonderful Kate DiCamillo is so brilliantly written and well-told that it makes me want to both be a better writer and give up writing altogether. DiCamillo's mastery of storytelling and her ability to compress meaning into such short, simple, graceful sentences is a joy to behold. And to top it off, her books are hilariously funny. Of the three, I liked Louisiana's Way Home best, but all three novels are outstanding. Which one you favor likely comes down to how you respond to the titular character of each book and their unique personalities. DiCamillo has given the world a beautiful and engaging body of work, and it boggles the mind that she continues to produce such amazing novels year after year. I'm going to make it quick; these people are expecting food in 30 minutes. 😜 This is my 3rd lunch break read of the school year. Kate DiCamillo is a goddess among children's authors. Her books leave lasting impressions shaped like rabbits and dogs on a reader's heart. Raymie Nightingale is a very, very sweet tale with a broad message of "I get by with a little help from my friends." Not the best DiCamillo I have read, but it's perfect for young readers. It's easy to read and follow with a little adventure thrown in for good measure.
