They came to Aqualand for safety, and find it’s not what it seems. Determined to keep them safe, Sophia, along with her uncle, scheme to break them out. But will they be succeed before it’s too late? The Aquanaut, by Dan Santat, is a whimsical graphic novel that is full of heart. It touches on grief, pain, loss, greed, and conservation. Because the lovable sea creatures arrive in Sophia’s dad’s suit, she forms an attachment with them as a way to keep ahold of her dad. Her uncle, Paul, is clinging onto Aqualand as a way to keep his brother’s research alive. And the author shows the various stages of grief and how no two people handle loss the same. Dan also touches on how greed can corrupt the once good intentions, but that it doesn’t have to have the last word-as Sophia and Paul are determined to put passion and love above money. Beautifully illustrated, emotional, and relatable, this was a tenderly written book that is perfect for kids and adults alike. Do you read graphic novels? I think there is sometimes a misperception that graphic novels are simplistic and shallow, but the majority I’ve read have tackled tough topics with heart and sincerity. I’ve also learned that P will devour any book that sparks her interest, but that “spark” can sometimes be hard to ignite – especially for lengthy books. She wants to know what is going to happen and whether it will be worth diving in. Flipping through the pages of a graphic novel allows her to see where a story is going before she commits, and that quick glimpse is almost always enough to get her to read. For that reason, I am incredibly grateful to @the.book.drop for sending us a new graphic novel each month through their ambassador program. I really appreciate being exposed to books that aren’t otherwise on our radar, and the graphic novels they choose are always well loved by us both. Most recently, we received: 📖 FRANKIE’S WORLD by Aoife Dooley is about a young autistic girl who has trouble fitting in and decides to search for her biological father to find out why. The Aquanaut ~ Dan Santat ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a really sweet and funny graphic novel about a girl whose father drowns on his research ship (which is shown in the prologue) and she then lives with her uncle. Five years later, four small sea creatures come to shore in an old diving suit to Aqualand, where Sophia lives with her uncle, to find sanctuary. Sophia encounters them and tries to help them, but through them learns the truth about a darker side of Aqualand. Is there a way for Sophia to help her uncle and the animals there? There are definitely some heavier emotional themes in this book, so if you plan on handing it over to a child, make sure they can deal with those, particularly parental death, loneliness, and animals in distress (not graphic or severe, but on the peripheral). That being said, there are also some laugh out loud moments. The sea creatures she befriends are delightful and goofy. Sophie is very brave, smart, and doesn’t give up. The story ends happily, so even though there are a few heavier moments and themes, overall it is a fun and charming book. My library range from (at least this) dnd manuals, dark romance, and several middle grades picks. What can I say, I have a varied reading taste? Honestly though, the middle grades books are to understand my work collection better, dnd is also for work (I’m running games in January for tweens) and the dark romance is a great way to unwind and distract myself. Graphic novel, The Aquanaut, by @dsantat This is a quirky, definitely original, sometimes sad-sometimes funny, story about a girl who makes friends with a tribe of sea creatures inhabiting her dad's old diving suit. That's right, pretty out there concept, right? As with all Dan Santat books, the illustrations are outstandingly divine. He gets wonderful contrast, colour and emotion into each image. The first scene is quite tense and sets the story up to be quite emotional, but the comedy comes through in the bizarre situation of having animals living in a diving suit helmet getting mistaken for a person. 💥 Graphic Novel Review: 🦀 The Aquanaut 🐟 @dsantat Reading age: 8-12 Genre: Fantasy 🐠 Our summary: Sophia had been depressed over losing her father so much that she was starting to fail school. One day at science, her teacher gave an assignment that could give Sophia extra credit. Sophia asked her uncle, who works at Aqualand (a marine theme park), for help, but he was too busy. Aqualand is failing to succeed, and no one has time for Sofia. By a stroke of luck, Sofia found an old diving suit powered by some sea creatures. They helped Sophia with the assignment, but she soon realized their days numbered. Mr. Lula is trying to use the aquanaut for his selfish ends, and the aquanaut must end Aqualand before it’s too late. 🐳 Paige’s thoughts: The book's theme is about loss and family with a background of marine life. The story is not too complicated and easy to read in one sitting! Some parts of the story are emotional, and some are hilarious. You can learn a little bit about marine life. The characters are realistic cartoons, and the palette is dim and earthy. 🦑 Laly’s thoughts: It was a moving story and a quick read. I felt the emotions along with the flow of the book. I would say it teaches a couple of suitable life lessons. The art was good, and I loved it. The colors match precisely like real-life colors instead of picking a color palette. I almost mistook it for pictures. I found it a little sad. The book has a lot of talk about fear and how you should stand up to it. THE AQUANAUT | A graphic novel picturing loss through a bunch of endangered marine creatures who went on land in search of home and encountered a grieving family. Topics on marine life and conservation were touched upon as well! As much as there were many parts in this graphic novel which left more to be desired: that is, 1) The time skips (at least 3!) did not seem to serve much of a functional purpose in either story progression or relationship development; 2) The characters were never fully introduced (The hermit crab wearing a soda can as his home was called Sodapop??? Or the whole crew for a fact until the very last page); 3) The ending and its ultimate resolution (i.e. semantics of the escape) did not feel entirely satisfactory. However, the emotional parts really struck such a deep chord within. The moments of connection between Sodapop and the animals / human in distress made me pop up because it was so beautifully rendered. Ugh the parallel depiction!!!!!! LOVE IT :-( May we all seek the connections we so long for: an understanding, a touch or simply paths converged.

It’s a #latergram for today’s outfit and books recap. First, this @loft dress is one of my favorites whether I wear it with a cardigan or pashmina. Captivating and entertaining, so creative! 📚🍪For lunch today I finished this #AQuickHistoryofMath and learned the most random smartypants math stuff while taking a bite out of the banana chocolate chip bars I made Tuesday night. 📚🎧 And last, I got to finish this audiobook from a list of books about refugees shared with me by my Pilates instructor @pilatesprinciple. Gosh, Clemantine’s journey needs to be read. Her multi country trek after leaving Rwanda with her sister Claire shows how hard she needed to work to survive and that everyone is deserving of compassion, love, and care. No one is better than another. Hello, bookstagram! I hope you all had a safe (Memorial Day) weekend! We stayed home for once and were able to fit in tons of family reading time. One of my recently finished reads was The Aquanaut by Dan Santat. This MG graphic novel features an unique array of sea creatures that decide to journey to Aqualand, a marine theme park, after finding a special aqua suit and explorer’s journal that leads them to believe it’s the safest place to be. The aqua suit gives the creatures human-like ability but they find that the park isn’t quite the same since the owner was lost at sea. This was a fun read with silly sea creature characters and a whimsical plot but was also a bit sad considering that the story revolves around a lost family member. This #graphicnovel included some hard topics, like the death of a parent, but it was portrayed so beautifully. Finding out that #dansantat had lost his own father in the midst of writing made this story all the more poignant. Along with messages of finding family in places where you least expect to and taking care of our oceans and the creatures who live there, The Aquanut will henceforth have a place in our library collection!
